G'day folks,
I've recently purchased a Galaxy S5 900i (Australia) which I've rooted with chainfire, all is running well, blah blah blah.
I'm now prompted that I can't do the OTA upgrade as my ROM has been modified. Instructs me to go through Kies for the upgrade. Fine.
I launch Kies and am prompted to upgrade.
Says I have firmware version PDA:NE1 / CSC:NE1 / PHONE:NE1 (XSA)
and that the latest version is PDA:NK1 / CSC:NJ2 / PHONE:NJ1 (XSA)
Question: Is this an upgrade to the 4.4.2 version I have, or is this Lollipop 5.0?
I appreciate any insight. I've googled and searched the forum without any luck.
Finally, what is the best way to apply? Un-root with ChainFire's SU App with the unroot function, then apply OTA or via Kies?
Much thanks-
J

I have the same problem with my samsung galaxy s5 , it is rooted but I would like to upgrade, I can't do the OTA upgrade so I should proceed with Kies , I would like to know whether I have to unroot my phone or just directly proceed with the upgrade, I don't want to create any damage to the phone;furthermore, my phone was a sumsung galaxy s5 tmobile but I managed to unlock it in order to use it with other carriers, if I install the original firmware and then upgrade to the newest version, can I still use it with other carriers or will return locked? thank you
So I learned a few things perhaps the hard way on this.
I'll tell you exactly what I did, and what happened, and you can decide for yourself.
OTA updates didn't work.
I am rooted and unlocked. (900i) I'm also not concerned with knox counter.
I plugged into Kies and started the upgrade.
It downloaded and flashed the updated ROM.
Phone rebooted, and hung on boot.
Battery pull, power on, same thing.
Hangs on "performing update"
I could however boot into recovery.
I DL'd the latest ROM manually, booted into recovery, flashed my ROM with Odin.
Rebooted. Phone upgraded. back to normal.
Boot, check for OTA updates. None: "you are using the current version, blah blah blah"
Re-rooted with ChainFire, and done. .
Should have I unrooted originally? Probably. May have allowed Kies to do the upgrade. Don't know.
Flashing with Odin worked flawlessly, so I'm not losing any sleep over it.
I think the only critical thing here is that you make sure you're flashing the correct ROM for your phone.

Hey guys
I have a Galaxy note 3 with Rogers here in Canada (SM-N900W8) and I know there has been 2 updates released (MJ1 and MJ4) but I havent been able to update over the air because my phone is rooted and flagged and my knox trigger is flagged as well.
Using Wanam xposed I have my status set to official and I can download the new update but the installation will fail.
Anyway so I connected my phone to KIES and it says I can update, however before I update it says if my phone is rooted its possible I can brick my phone.
So my questions are, 2 install these updates (MJ1 and MJ4), will it brick my phone? If it doesnt will I lose my root? Can I reroot on these latest firmwares and lastly is there reasons why maybe I should stay at my current firmware?
Sorry if this has been asked before. Ive tried searching and I didnt have much luck
Thanks

Short answer is NO.
I updated mine via KIES to MJ7 (I'm on the N9005) - while rooted. KIES says you "may" encounter problems but mine was fine and I re-rooted with ease (already tripped KNOX so no worry there for me) _- as for your firmware on the N900W8 - not sure if you can root with the latest firmware or not personally
So I'm new to Samsung (switched from HTC One to Nexus 5 (2013) to Galaxy S5 today). I used Chainfire's Odin tool to root (was easy enough), but now I'm getting a notification telling me there is an update, which because my phone is "modified" I can't run. I downloaded the Kies3 application and this is the info I'm getting:
Current firmware version : PDA:NC9 / CSC:NC6 / PHONE:NC9 (DBT)
Latest firmware version : PDA:NCE / CSC:NC7 / PHONE:NCE (DBT)
Can I update or do I run the risk of bricking? Or will I just lose root? Will the root tool work after this upgrade? Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
A guy on a T-Mobile S5 subforum says he took the update and then rooted with Chainfire afterwards.
He was not rooted prior to the update though.
did it work?
because i had a problem with it

I finally bit the bullet and just did it, update went fine using Kies and then I re-rooted and installed custom recovery...everything seems fine. The only thing that blows my mind is the bloatware on this monster..."Android optimizing....429 apps" !!!
Hi,
Im from the netherlands and noticed that the update for 5.0.1 is available.
I have the Exynos (N910C) version android 4.4.4 rooted installed now.
I have changed dpi settings true xposed.
What is the best way to update to the new version 5.0.1 ?
Thanks,
Roy
I have used the auto root to root the stock rom.
N910C is Exynos, not Snapdragon, so choose your ROM carefully.
Best way to upgrade is to backup everything first, then install new ROM with Odin (download correct version from sammobile), then root using your method of choice (I personally recommend flashing TWRP recovery and choose root on exit).
After that, you can restore everything you need from the backups.

Your device was rooted and no way to upgrade 5.0.1 via OTA. The only way now is download latest Firmware (for your Area) on Sammobile.com or similar website then using Odin to upgrade. Remember: full wipe on recovery first then flashing FW via Odin on Downloadmod.
Thanks for the awnsers. i meant the Exynos, sorry for that.
I havent tryed to update it true normal update way becouse i thought this wasnt possible as my device is rooted.
So i might try if i can do this?
Roy
OTA will fail because you tripped Knox when you rooted.
Besides, lollipop brings a new bootloader, modem and csc, so even if you choose to flash a custom lollipop ROM, you still need to upgrade those using Odin.

thanks,
I have installed the 5.0.1 version true odin without doing a full wipe. I still have all my apps and files and it seems to work oke.
Did i have to do a full because of the battery draining stuff? or is it oke like this?
Roy
Should be fine as it is, but a full wipe once in a while never hurts...
If you notice something wrong, battery drain, lag or even applications force-close, then why not... perform a full wipe and restore your apps and settings gradually.
Make sure you backup everything, i failed my stock update to android 5..0.1 (OTA), and now i still didnt found anyway to get my data back, it remains dead there
Titanium Backup FTW
Hi guys,
I really need some help here, maybe I'm just lost on how updates work?
I have an AT&T phone which was running KitKat 4.4.2, I had tons of issues upgrading to 4.4.4 but finally managed to do so last night. Months ago AT&T released the upgrade option for the S5 to upgrade to 5.0, I tried and kept getting "Setup Interrupted" errors. My girlfriend who has the same phone and the same carrier had no issues upgrading her phone to lollipop. I gave up on it. Fast-foward to last night, I managed to finally get to 4.4.4 but when I run a Software Update Check I get a message that the firmware is up to date. Same thing in Kies.
I contacted AT&T who told me Android had no "cleared" my IMEI for the update and then they proceeded to send me a copy paste from the web with instructions of flashing using ODIN. Those instructions were clearly for SM-G900F, my model is SM-G900A. Is there anything I can do to get lollipop on my AT&T S5? Thanks in advance.
As far as i know, the odin process is the same for both variants......
The only thing you have to consider is that as your device is AT&T, it comes with a locked bootloader.....meaning that ONLY an AT&T branded firmware will successfully flash.
You should be able to get the correct firmware from either sammobile dot com Or samsung updates dot com (we're not allowed to post links to those sites on XDA)

Hi Guys,
im new to the Samsung World. I bought a S5 (G900F) with Lollipop 5.0. Today i rooted it with CF-Autoroot, installed rootchecker and so far everything is fine.
When i go to the Systemsettings now, to Softwareupdates and check for updates, there is an error now. It says, that the firmware was changed not authorized or something like that.
What does that mean? Am i still able to Update to Marshmallow, once it comes out? How can i do this? A few days ago, i received a Securityupdate via OTA. Is this possible in the future with this root? If not, how can i do it or how can i get back to stock?
Thx
Questions you should have asked before rooting really
But you're OK, the G900F is easy enough to get OTA working again, just flash another stock ROM over the top, and you'll be back to "official" status and able to receive updates OTA
sammobile .com for ROMs and ODIN that you use to flash them
Thx for your answer. I don't need OTA as long as i am able to update to Android 6 somehow. Is it still poossible to update via Kies 3 ? Am i also able to update the Securityupdates via Kies?
If so, im fine with that.
thx
