No, I'm not a troll. Just found out from ex gf her note 4 started smoking and per her before she could knock charger out of socket she stated she saw sparks come out of it and really started smoking. Has anyone heard of this happening? Using per charger. No root. Just stock.

Any pics of the damage?
I'll get some within the hour. Just googled it and have found no reports on this. She flat out refuses to get another one. And she's been Samsung user since note 1.

Stock charger and stock battery?
Yes to stock on both. Just checked it. No physical damage. Everything happened from inside where you plug charger in. Verizon said she can have a refub. Go figure. She's on hold with Samsung right now seeing if they'll replace it with a new one. Obviously just a 1 in a million deal. She's pissed. She tried oem charger on sons Samsung mini and it wouldn't charge. I suggested she not try that again.

crazy. I've heard that crap on the USB cable itself can cause issues.. like if there's a hair or something caught on the little sharp edges that help it click in place, it could ignite something. one in a million chance tho, but still. I always check mine for hairs before I plug it in because it lays on my floor (dumb, i know) and it'll always get them on it and I have to pull it off

Didn't know that about fod possibly causing issues. I personally have never seen someone bring an issue r/t USB . I'm thinking it was nothing more than a fluke. She's saying Samsung sucks now. After owning 6 of their phones. Did state what if it happened while sleeping and phone on bed. Couldn't give her a answer to that one. She's going to Verizon to see about getting new one and letting them deal with shipping off to samsung.

Pics yet?
No pics. Could barely see damage inside charger port. I took back cover off and saw no damage. It seems smoke and sparks came out of that area. Again, I did not see any physical type damage. Still smelled like electrical burn.

This happened to my Asus Laptop but it was only the charger. It was sparking right at the connector going into the laptop. I replaced the charger and all was fine. I am guessing her phone will not power on?
My note 4 DE got hot on the bed charging. I only charge her on the dresser now. No issue. The bed acts as an insulator and keeps the heat.

how hot does your dev ed get? i returned 2 dev eds for heat/lag issues. they got 10 degrees hotter then my note 4 from last year
Phone is shot. Even after being off for hours it was still warm. Wierd. Unfortunately the biggest fiasco has been with Samsung customer support. I've never in my life dealt with such inept people. She had it worse yesterday. Makes me think about moto again. Just because. Not the most rational thought I've had this week but.....

I haven't sent mine back. Sometimes it gets warm/hot and the screen goes pink. I can't be without a phone. They took a rooted note 4 de back no problem or you restore it to stock
I had a laptop spark and smoke once and luckily I got out of the shower in time to catch it

Last week when charging my phone, it slipped off my desk and something happened inside the phones USB port. The little metal contact was moved out of place. I could still charge, but it had to be at a certain angle and if I picked it up it stopped charging.
And this morning, I broke it even more. I dropped it into a bowl of milky cereal. I didn't think it would be too bad. I wiped it down and I've been using it fine all day at college. But I've just got home and went to test if it still charged. On my own little USB cord I had from elsewhere it didn't work, but on the official LG one it worked after a LOT of shuffling around and changing the angle.
I'm gonna leave it as it is to make sure it doesn't stop charging, because I don't have a wireless charger handy.. I would also prefer to get the official orb from Google, because I don't want to spend a lot of money of something that doesn't work very well.
I was wondering if there is a way to fix this myself, or can I get a replacement from Google/LG?

I'm actually quite careful with my phone! It's just very smooth and slippery..
I would call them and tell them it no longer charges.
See what they say. Worst thing they do is say not covered.
I would omit the milk and dropping parts.

So if I just say it's stopped charging, they might be kind a send a replacement without any hassle? Or would I have to return the device?
There is no need to leave a post in the respective thread if you are reporting something. Please stick to the topic guys.
So, has anyone else had any problems with the battery swelling on the N4? I first noticed that parts of the screen was having what appeared to be a massive light bleed, then after a few hours the back came off. I was not charging the phone so I have a hard time believing there is something wrong with my charger. I have attached a picture showing what it looks like now..
Never seen that before I'd get the phone replaced.
That's crazy
The problem is the battery blew up. How hot did you get that thing and for how long.

I had the phone in my pocket and only used it for Spotify when I was outside walking. I never checked the temperature when I saw the phone like that for the first time, so actually I don´t know how hot it got. I haven´t found a way to see the max temperature but if someone give me the instructions I gladly will.
I would suggest turning it off immediately and RMA'ing. That is dangerous. I'm really surprised at how bad that has swollen without exploding

Absolutely, I will call Google in the morning. The thing is that I live in Sweden and the phone is bought in the UK Play Store, so it will be interesting to see how I am able to RMA it since I don´t live in the UK.

Here's some information to RMA Devices

Hello,
Please dont burn me since this topic has a lot of threads already. I live outside the USA and will be visiting US for a few weeks and am planning on getting the nexus 4. After reading through dozens of threads, the general conclusion seems to be that its a hardware problem which can be temporarily fixed by unscrewing the back plate and whatnot.
My question is that is this problem present only in the first few batches of nexus 4 devices? Do you think google must have fixed it by now and cranking out fixed hardware this time?
If so anyone who has recently bought the nexus can confirm? Or is there any link which confirms this?
I only ask because I dont want to be stuck with a dead phone sixteen thousand miles away :/
Thank you!
Life is a gamble. Having said that, chances are a million to one that your brand new n4 will have the battery problem.

Do you think nexus support will comment on this if I call them up in US once I land?
I recently bought a N4 in the USA, not my usual place of residence. It no longer works - the dreaded red light of death. I have no idea how it happened, but that I let the battery run very low and when I plugged it in to charge it froze and then never turned on again.
I've tried various things, but the screen never displays anything, there's no vibration, etc. I've charged it for a long time and to no avail. Strangely, when I plug it into my computer I immediately get a warning about "Unsafe device removal"
I'm either going to pay to get it fixed, or RMA it when I make it to the USA next.
There's a way to fix. You have to remove the back cover and unscrew the two screws that is holding the battery pins. Once you have taken off the screws you have to lift the pins off just a little bit. Don't take the battery off. Then place the pins back and rescrew them in. That should work.

Just so you know, I have one of the first batch Nexii, have had mine since mid-November, and have never had this issue. They don't all have the problem.
I just freaking experienced this. I reading something, while sitting near my charger, and I forgot to plug my phone in. Then the phone died, so I pluged it in, and there it was, the infamous red light :/ I scared the sh*t out of me. But after unpluging and holding all 3 buttons at once for a few sec, it booted.
I am so freaking lucky
I was on the latest PA rom
Ps. I bought my phone in January, so its from the 3rd batch (ordered in december in germany)

Does anyone else have a hard time plugging in their phone? With my gnex I could easily plug in my phone and be done. However, with my g2, I have to sit their for a little bit and wiggle it around just to plug it into the phone. I was gonna stop by Verizon after work and look at their floor model but wanted yalls opinion before I did that and looked at getting a new one.

It is tighter than my GNex but mine is not too tight. I like it tight. :highfive:
Yes, it's definitely more difficult than any other phone I've had.
It might just be good
It may be more stable if it's tighter and will be less prone to accidental disconnection? It might degrade faster though.
It is def tighter and goes "deeper" and kinda clicks and locks in. its also not straight in, kinda have to angle it down a little. Cant compare it to the GNex bc that was a crappy usb connection that would fall out easily. This is MUCH better
I think its the Charger that comes with the phone!
Its tight on my G Pro as well. But when I use say a samsung charger its extreamly loose on this phone.

Could be the one im using then :/
I do know using any other cable even with the stock wall plug it charges slower.
It was very tight when I first plugged it in, I thought I had it upside down but either way was difficult. A few days later it's getting easier, so just give it some time and it will be fine.
Having the same issue here. Brought the phone home Saturday evening and thought I was going to break it. Went back to the store yesterday and they tried one in the back that was the same. As everyone else is saying, hopefully it gets a little easier over time. Hate the feeling that it's going to break jamming it in right now.

Alleged but hopefully they update that article see what happened for sure. Man hopefully Samsung is pumping out the replacement phone like asap. End of the week type a thing. Especially, if he is picking up his daughters. Should have phone in case communication necessary! Would be very sad if folks "creating" situations to take advantage of a problematic battery.

Now thats a really crazy story, yeah pretty normal for people leaving phone charging at the garage, specially when picking kids from school, I mean why would you need a phone at that moment, normally I leave my phone charging at my backyard lol
This story is fishy too. He left the phone plugged in his garage while he went for a drive to pick up his daughter. Who leave there phone at home when they have to go pick up there kids. Seems a bit intentional if you ask me. Also who plugs their phone in to charge out in the garage?

I actually do quite often but I have a Gear S2 that's Numbersynced. If I'm only going to be out for about an hr or two and don't foresee needing my phone to browse the web, my Gear S2 works just fine. I can still answer my calls, make calls, get my email and text messages even if the phone is not with me or even turned off.

Read my last post and look at the pics in the recall thread in the main Note7 forum. Something doesn't make sense. All three phones that fried I found pics of overheated similarly. Yet the plastic home button which is less than an inch away from the battery didn't melt. Plastic melts at 170 degrees. That's 5 degrees hotter than chicken should be cooked to eat safely. The digitizer (plastic) didn't even fry on one of the phones; the right side is completely intact. And I'm guessing the event should it occur is brief. The chemical reaction that causes the battery to fry happens, the battery is killed, and it and the phone start to cool. Even if its plugged in the parts on the phone that receive current will have been killed in the incident. There are two questions: 1) will it happen to my phone?, and 2) what will happen if it does? Based on what I've been able to dredge up I don't think the odds of "1" are as high as it's being made out to be and the damage caused by "2" seems to be pretty contained. Unless of course you want to get out of your car loan or mortgage.
