[Q]How to Root SM-G900T - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, I was an idiot and updated my 4.4.2 thinking that I was gonna get an official Lollipop OS........WRONG!!!!! Idk what I got, but its **** and now I can reroot my phone using towel. Now, I have seen a couple posts on how to downgrade, break knox, and all that good stuff, but nothing for my version phone. So....my question is this....HOW CAN I GET ROOT BACK. And it would be nice if I dont trip knox....but i have a feeling thats not gonna happen. Any help would be appreciated!!

[Q] Should I root and install a custom ROM or wait for 2.2?

I'm tempted to root my phone, and install a ROM, BUT is it really worth it? Should I have more patience and wait for 2.2 ROMS? Im worried if I root it now, then 2.2 comes out Ill have to restore it back to stock. I also heard if you have a rooted phone and a major update (like froyo) comes out your pretty much bricked. Advice needed?

Wrong section.
Root it. You can always unroot your phone and go back to stock. Ive done it plenty of time. Read through the forums....there are plenty of instructions on how to

Agreed on rooting. The stock phone software is really crappy. I'm not sure how you live with it?

You can always flash back to stock if you don't like what you did to it. I end up flashing to stock, then flashing to a rom every other week or so to clean any messes with my phone. You'll learn how to do it right and how to fix. But start by reading the stickies, and asking the guys on irc if you have questions.
I'ld be more concerned that if you get the OTA before you root, that the update will close the exploit and make it impossible to root afterwards. If you root now, you may have to wait a day or two longer for Froyo. But if you plan to root after (or if you unroot for an OTA), you may have to wait a lot longer for a new root method.
Root and ROM. no question about it. We haven't even heard a release date or even a time frame for when the Fascinate will get it. I know everyone bashes me for this but the bottom line is no one has ever came out and said that the fascinate will get it on this date. Maybe the galaxy S is. But not the VERIZON FASCINATE

Root, unlock bootloader, and recovery

Hi all,
I just came from an HTC EVO 4G LTE and I sort of want to root right away. But, I've noticed there isn't an "all-in-one" root/unlock bootloader/flash recovery yet. Should I wait? The reason I ask is because I was reading some of the other threads and some people were saying they regret rooting and want to unroot and someone even mentioned something about accepting an update with the booatloader locked is a bad thing, possibly. Needless to say, I'm a bit confused. I guess I want to root so I can install TiBu and get tether to work.
Thanks...
The bootlocker is not locked on this phone. I'd use qbking's method to root the phone if you're desparate for root right away. Otherwise, I'd just suggest waiting. I'm guessing in weeks to come there will be custom roms and probably a universal method for rooting, possibly even a toolbox. Because the phone isn't even a week old, everything is still getting sorted out.

Just follow qbkings video. The motochopper method is legit. I rooted on day 1. using tibu and adaway and all the rest.

I gave my 4G LTE to my roommate... I loved it like the OG but the HTC EVO 3D (not so much)... Just got tired of HTC's slowness to update and problems with contact lags, etc. So far, I'm loving the S4
I think I'm going to resist rooting for another week. Let's see if I can.. Knowing myself, if i have nothing to do this weekend i will probably root it
Thanks you for all of your inputs...
wow, that was the easiest root I have ever done I think. There is no reason to wait, TWRP is here and that was so painless as well.
It's just as easy to unroot too. just flash the stock firmware and recovery via odin.

Ok.. So i am ready to do root.. Just one question

I have done some reading and finally decided I will be using the Casual method to root my S 4, but I am stock with not wanting to end up with the custom lock pad permanently, and I have seen many people have not been able to get rid of it.
So here is my question... After using Casual, what would be the way to get back to stock? This method installs custom recovery, so I am not sure how to go back if indeed to....
Can some one point me in the right direction?
Appreciated!
Before we move forward here, have you updated? As it stands the update released yesterday effectively blocks root and more then likely also blocks Loki. O and it blocks Odin so you can't downgrade. This is like first and foremost if you even wanna run casual now.
no update on my phone yet...

post #1 is about rooting/flashing. post #2 addresses returning to stock, which literally is about as simple as flashing stock firmware via odin and factory resetting. cheers
Awesome.. I read that post but forgot completely about it.. most appreciated!

as Thermalwolf stated, your firmware version is important. make sure you dont have the latest MF3
No.. MDL still

If you're still on MDL I recommend rooting now before your phone tries to force MF3 on you as it blocks root and possibly loki.

Yea, talk about making it just under the wire, your lucky you decided to root today and that your phone hadn't already updated.
I feel for those poor souls that updated, personally I think loki is patched and I remember sitting around for months and months while people tried and failed to unlock the rezound bootloader, locked bootloaders can be a b***h
Take care of your non MF3 Galaxy S4's everyone, they just became more valueable ...

Right?! This guy could not have picked a better day too root. Also I'm damn sure Loki is patched, we can't Odin back to MDL so that should speak for itself.
OP, Root and block the OTA APKs immediately! If your phone starts downloading just rip the battery out lol

I just rooted last night. I keep postponing the update. I did some searching and found that I should rename wssyncmldm.apk and reboot to block the OTA update. Is this correct? Is there another file that should be renamed?
Thanks!
ok just did it.. had some issues with Windows drivers but it turns out MAC worked just fine.. i am currently doing nandroid back up..
thanks to all for replies..
ok everything works just fine.. now.. what would be my next step

You need to read the existing threads. Go to the 'General" section read the stickies and then read the threads about the new OTA. ALL of your questions are answered in detail in those threads. Good luck.
Hopefully this works for me
I Bought my S4 yesterday and the sales rep at AT&T pressed the update button before handing it to me. I didn't think anything of it because as far as I knew android was designed to be open and easily rooted. Man was I mad when I got home. So today I went back and complained that the "phone was glitchy" and was handed another one. This time I told them not to touch it. Hand over the box and nobody gets hurt (keep in mind I paid full price for it too so i was extra mad). This one is on MDL. Now to root and block update. Hooray!

S3 to S4 am I stupid I can't understand what im doing trying to ROOT!!

I swear I read up on the phone but im confused I didn't check what my phone had before I updated it I bought it form SAMS last week. Its a S4 and its MK right now after update.
So does that mean I can't use the normal root method and have to use SD root method?
Mk2 is what says android ver 4.3 so its jellybean still not kitkat correct?
Its I337 and Mk2 .... android version 4.3
Now I read that if you mess (mod edit) this up you can't go back? is this true? How do I backup the phone right now? Like a full backup so if I brick it I can fix it? Do we still use odin? I rocked my S3 and still have it (I had mobile odin on my S3) if that helps... I dunno...
Can anyone link me a few threads to show me how to root this phone? Im not happy about SD card way of rooting it because its difficult ... how can I go back to the orignal version that came with the phone before I updated it? I heard its easy to root it that way then update? Thats what I want to do? So I assume I need a tar? But I read that there are no backups for this phone so if you brick your dead is that true? Any information be great I read starter threads but didn't seem give me easy information also whats OTA stand for? OTA Mk2? I dunno I been out loop for awhile my S3 broke 3 months ago cracked so stopped flashing it... Guess im rusty thanks for help sorry for repeat questions I know there repeats but I can't find exact information I need.
start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283918
then do some more reading of the threads...in general and in development...
Users are expected to do their own research and as XDA is not, in fact, a support site. I am going to close this thread.
Take the time to learn and understand before you turn your expensive device into a paperweight. If it is too difficult, then perhaps you (and all users) leave well enough alone.

[Q] Root method for 4.4.2 OTA?

Are the old root methods for 4.3 still valid after taking the 4.4.2 OTA? I tried using kingo root but it will not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The way I understand it is they changed something in the code that broke the old roots. Were you rooted before the 4.4.2 OTA? There were many threads here warning against taking the OTA for the risk of loosing root. You may be without it for a while until someone finds a work around for the new code...

No, I was not rooted beforehand. I just recently got the phone and love it. But man I would love to get root access for bloatware, adblock, ect. I guess i'll have to just keep an eye out for a new method when one drops.
Thanks for the quick reply though! :good:
Yeah, in the same boat here. I just got the phone on the day KK dropped, so I assumed the update when i first powered the phone on was an old one. If only I had known! LOL
Same here! Hope someone comes up with a solution soon.
