[Q] Help! reception issues. - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently switched from my old iPhone 4s to the galaxy s5 on the rogers network and I'm experience cing major issues. My iPhone never had an issue anywhere in my house or area with reception, but the s5 is not the same story. First time I brought it home I couldn't make a call and if I somehow managed to it was so spotty and often dropped my calls. I know that the s5 will search for the lte network, where the iPhone ran on 4G, and since there is no lte network in my area I was advised to switch my settings to connect to the 4G network. And.......... no change! I'm not very tech savy and I'm hoping I can learn a great deal with the switch, but It is a phone after all and I need that to work lol.
Help me please.

Reception

I have horrible reception in the house i live in. I was wondering if theres any tricks that i can use to get better reception inside the house. I have to step out just to make phone calls half the time so any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Do you actually have no signal, or are you going by the bars. I don't have great reception at home either, but make calls all the time here with the phone showing no bars. I leave my phone in 2G only mode as 3G at my house is spotty at best. That way the phone isn't trying to switch between 2G and 3G. I find this phone has better reception than my previous Sony TM506 and Nokia E73 at my house.
There are rumors that T-mobile will launch a WiFi calling app for android. Who knows when, but I've heard it mentioned by t-mobile sales reps. (specifically with regards to the vibrant)

That would be a thing of beauty not that my reception is terrible
I should also mention that I'm talking corporate sales reps not retail sales reps.
Tha would be awesome. I have good reception, but in my brother's house I get no service, but I remember when I had the Blackberry, I could use the wifi signal and had perfect reception in his house
Please tmobile give us the hotspot at home app.

In my house i have no service in the house, i have to go outside to make calls. If only they come out with the app to make phone calls over wifi, that would make this phone all the more better.

Question for ATT users

I currently have the the G2 on the T-mobile network. I frequently switch back and forth between 3G and Edge which is driving me nuts. Is this a phone issue or a network issue? Do people with the Desire Z on the ATT network have the same issue?
Its a network issue with your location, It happens on any phone including the iPhone. Its if the carrier has that service available where you are.
I am located in Minneapolis which supposedly has very good T-mobile 3G coverage. A friend of mine who has a G1 on T-mobile here in Minneapolis always sees solid 3G. This makes me wonder whether this is a phone issue. Flashing the 17 radio did improve reception, but not satisfactorily. Could any ATT users share their experience?
I mean, the phone and radio and rom will play a factor somewhat in it but not that much. To be fair, edge and 3G dont have too much a difference in speed or at least not here in Florida, but i run 4G almost everywhere anyways.

For the MOST part, this is a network issue. The phone Radio will have an impact on the quality of cell signal you get but the network carries the most weight. Not all phones are created equal as far as reception goes. My DZ is average. Its not great like my previous BB Bold was but doesn't drop calls like my gf's phone.
I do on occasion drop from 3G to Edge but only when I'm in rural areas. I work in a jail on occasion and of course the concrete walls aren't great for cell signal. I usually switch from 3G to Edge when I'm there because Edge just holds the signal better rather than the phone killing itself trying to find a solid 3G signal.
Also, like the other user mentioned, 3G and Edge aren't night and day per-say. For example, sometimes Edge can be FASTER depending on how much traffic is on the network at that time. I experienced this on a day trip to San Francisco. With 3 gazillion Iphones in the city, I couldn't get my phone to connect to anything with 3G. When I switched to Edge, it was moving steady no problem...
Just my 2 cents.
Is Negri Electronics still the cheapest place to buy the Desire Z NAM or are there other sites with better offers? I checked ebay and all the phones there are more expensive when you calculate in shipping.
Possible Fix
Here is one thing that may fix the problem, as it has for me. Set your phone to WCDMA only by dialing *#*#4636#*#* . A menu will then appear. Select Phone Information. Change Set Preferred Network Type to WCDMA Only.
Hope this helps!

Yes, already tried that as well, but then I lose connection completely intermittently instead of switching between edge and 3G.

I feel very sorry for you then. EDGE makes me want to claw my eyes out versus 3G. Everywhere in New England on AT&T, the difference in speed between EDGE and 3G is like the difference between throwing a bullet and shooting it. Even more so with the "4G" HSPA+ backhaul recently done by AT&T in many areas. But even before that, it was a big difference.
My Desire Z very seldom switches from 3G to EDGE. When it does, its in areas of very weak 3G coverage. As others have mentioned, its likely a network issue. Flashing a new radio is pretty easy (and you can always flash back to stock), so it may be worth a try. But it may or may not have any significant impact.

Signal problems with Verizon LTE

My brother and I both got S4s almost 2 weeks ago. He upgraded from an S3. Me from a Rezound. He also has a work phone that is a Verizon Note 2.
We were out at our parents' house over the weekend. Our dad has a RAZR Maxx and a 4G Verizon MiFi for his house. All 5 of these phones/devices are on Verizon.
Both of Dad's devices and my brother's Note 2 were maintaining a steady 4G LTE connection. The Note 2 only showed about 2 bars, but it held it steady and never dropped back to 3G at any time while we were there.
But, both my and my brother's S4s would not hold 4G. We played around with network settings. Changed them from CDMA/LTE to Global, and then back. They would both occasionally switch to 4G for a minute or so, then always switch back to 3G.
I called Verizon tech support and they walked us through things including turning off the phones, pulling the SIMs and letting him push a new PRL to us. Nothing helped, so he told us to go get new SIMs. I did that yesterday and went back out to my dad's and it's still the same. My dad's phone and his MiFi maintain a steady 4G LTE signal and my S4 mostly just stays on 3G.
I also noticed that I went to the movies yesterday and when I was in the theater lobby, which is right in the middle of town, where there is strong 4G signal, my phone had dropped back to 3G there, too.
I'm still within my 14 day return period and I am seriously thinking of returning the S4 and getting a Note 2.
Does anybody have any better suggestions?
I found a thread on the AC forums where a guy reported the same issue I'm having. He took the SIM out of his Rezound, cut it down, plugged it in, and he said that fixed his 4G reception problem.
I'm going to VZW after work and trying a 3rd SIM. This time, one of the old style, that doesn't support NFC.
I went to Verizon after work yesterday and got a new non-NFC SIM. Then went back to my dad's house. The SIM does not appear to make any difference. My phone still wanted to switch to 3G and stay there.
But, I did figure out one encouraging thing. I used Battery Monitor Widget to get into the Testing screen. There, I was able to change the phone from "CDMA/LTE (Auto PRL)" to "LTE Only".
After doing that, the phone went into 4G mode and stayed there, and actually worked fine. I turned on my hotspot and connected to it with my tablet and surfed for a while, with no issues.
This tells me that the phone's LTE reception is pretty much just as good as the Note 2 and other devices I mentioned before. It's just a software issue that is switching it to 3G mode when it doesn't need to.

[Q] Need help!!! Poor reception on phones!

We could really use some advice; my wife and I just switched from old BB 9700 to the galaxy s5, and my wife noticed she could no longer make calls on the bottom floor of her building without them being dropped repeatedly; with the BB she had no problem making these calls. I have been trying to research the problem, and checking my phone, it tells me my signal strength is hovering around -120 dbm (and 16 asu, whatever that means) at home. I never had a reception problem with my BB at home either. To make this a little more confusing, we switched carriers from Rogers to Eastlink when we did this switch.
We're now about a week into our contracts, and have a week left for the grace period; the question is, is this the phone, or the network? Should we be ditching the gs5 for something with better reception? We love the phone, but reception is really important for us. Is there a better phone to try?
Wanted to add, in Status, I'm getting:
Signal strength 120 DBMS 20 asu
Mobile network type : unknown
Service state: out of service
Roaming: not roaming
Mobile network state: disconnected
Does this explain whether the phone or network are at fault?
Thanks for any help!!
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
120dbm doesn't sound good. In my experience, you need at least 100 or lower.. as far as reception, I think that would largely depend on your carrier. In theory, the S5 should have better hardware for reception so I don't believe that's a problem.... Maybe try an HTC One M8?
I noticed worse signal on my new S5 also.
Every day I travel same trip and on my S3 I never lost signal.
Now with the S5 there are 3 moments I completely lose signal.
Also in my home at some places I lose signal.
I have the genuine Samsung wireless charging cover (not s-cover).

Same here. My BB and S3 have no problems with reception in our house, nor does my wife's S2.
But my S5 has no signal at all. Either the S5's radio software is rubbish or the antenna is puny.

S4 radio reception

Here is my issue and I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this... currently on Canadian Rogers LTE network, but my job site has piss poor reception, usually to the point where I am getting a useless 1 bar on 4g. The thing is... and tech support can offer next to no support... Canadian networks are now sharing their towers should rogers have no reception in the area, others like telus step up
so my question is this... with my stock s4 is there a way to force the phone to go off telus towers. guys I work with have full bars with Telus, meanwhile rogers is terrible. the other option, I only have a couple months left so I could root and modify that way too and not be too worried if I brick
any help is much appreciated
You could force it to scan for networks.
The only thing you can do rooted is to change the modem.
