My unlocked rooted Nexus 4 (Android 5.0.1) charges normally when powered on and normally when powered off from both the OEM A/C adapter and from a Windows 8.1 Pro machine. On the Windows 8.1 Pro x64 machine the Nexus 4, when powered off, is still recognised as an MTP USB Device.
On any one of my Windows 7 Ultimate x64, the Nexus 4, when powered on, is recognised normally as an MTP USB Device with Android Composite ADB Interface and connects and charges normally.
However, on the Windows 7 machines the Nexus 4, when powered off, will not charge and this appears to be because the MTP USB Device drivers dont work. The Nexus 4 is recognised as an MTP USB Device but the driver installation fails (the error is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I guess it doesn't charge because it isn't properly installed.
I have tried every fix I can find on the web with no success. I assume it's a problem in Win7 as there is no problem in Win8.1. There are obviously numerous work arounds; this is just bugging me - has any one seen and solved this particular problem?

I'm trying to use the Nexus Root Toolkit to do some work on my original Nexus 7, but I'm having driver issues.
A few notes:
The device is rooted running CM 10.2 (might be irrelevant)
My PC is running Windows 8.1 and is fully up-to-date
My PC does recognize my Nexus 5 with no issues. (rooted, stock)
I've tried MULTIPLE times to use the Nexus Root Toolkit's Driver Configuration Guide to get my drivers working with absolutely zero luck
My PC is recognizing the Nexus 7 in the "Devices and Printers" menu and I can access it as a mounted drive when USB debugging is disabled
I'll provide more information if I can, but I'm really beginning to get frustrated with this.
My device is showing up in the Device Manager as a "SAMSUNG ANDROID PHONE" device, which makes zero sense.
Please help?
I am trying to upgrade a relative's Nexus 7 (2012) to 5.0. It is rooted so the OTA is not working.
When I try to plug it in to a Windows PC, it simply charges with no recognition from the computer or the tablet. There's no change in the device manager. I have tried several usb cables and Windows 7 and 8.1. I have played around with USB debugging and MTP/PTP.
So, I cannot use adb/fastboot to upgrade the device.
Are there steps I can take to rectify this issue? Is it currently possible to upgrade the device some other way? (losing root or TWRP is fine as long as it updates)
Thanks.
Problem with my Nexus 7 2012 version. I can get into TWRP but I can't get it to recognize my USB stick where I have an image of the latest android OS for the Nexus 7 2012 32G version. My bootloader is locked. I accidentaly erased it. Dont even remember if I had usb debugging on or off? It does power up and charge properly, and yes I am using an OTG USB adapter cable....Also computer says device doesnt recognize device after loading drivers......

Hey guys, my nexus 7 is rooted operating AOSP/AOKP on 4.2.2 just to give some brief information (it's not fresh in my mind and I plan to clean install a new rom and kernal).
So first I'm not getting my nexus to display in my computer (win 7 x64) as MTP with usb debugging enabled nor disabled. PTP camera mod works and displays. I've already googled around so I know a few basic solutions to this issue none of which have worked thus far.
Following Nexus Root Toolkit driver instructions.
After wiping the drivers a windows restart and disabling debug mode, connecting via usb only installs the "Android ADB Interface" driver only (step 2 link above). After switching from MTP to PTP Nexus 7 driver is installed only (step 3). I then re-enable MTP where no new driver is installed untill usb debugging is turned back on and Android Composite ADB Interface driver is installed (step 4 + 5). This is where I'm stuck... At one point while playing about I managed to get MTP in the taskbar driver installer only to fail "No driver found" or something along those lines.
Please can someone assist me I need this tablet wiped and operation ASAP.
Thanks anymore information required just ask.
Bought new N6p 64gb
Updated it to latest version by OTA.
Now, i'm trying to connect it to PC (win7 ultimate) and it's not recognized.
Have also Nexus 5 that working great with MTP but the Nexus 6p won't no matter what I tried.
Enabled debugging, tried to install latest Google drivers... Everything.
Still, can't see it in Windows to unlock and root.
Spend two hours to figure out what is wrong. Windows says the mtp is installing but after few seconds gives me an error that it didn't install.
Help me please.

Did you select usb for mtp from the notification?
It's Android's issue!
Enable Developer Options!
& when plug OTG to phone, go to menu "Select USB Configuration" & 1st select Charging & Again select MTP mode!
You really won't believe it. After being frustrated with the N6p and opening this thread, I plugged the phone to pc with usb cable, shut it down and then booted into bootloader. PC recognized the phone as adb. After that I just powered on the phone normally (into the Android os) and waolla, PC recognized it right. Checked twice and both (N5 and N6p) working as supposed to be.
