Hi,
Just curious is anybody can suggest some avenues for repair. A friend of mine gave me their GT-I9505 which had a broken screen. They apparently were aware of the issues with this phone and upgraded to an iPhone 6, but didn't tell me about this until after I'd bought a screen replacement and had already encountered the issue.
I replaced the screen but now have issues with the device showing "No SIM Card". Sometimes the device also has difficulty charging. The device also seems to get very hot, and the SIM issue appears to occur around high heat.
To try to fix this I have:
Tried different SIMs
Verified correct operation of the top proximity sensor
Verified the device is an authentic Samsung and the IMEI is not listed as stolen
Reflashed firmware with ODIN
Tried Cyanogenmod 11
Used CPU Tuner to underclock the processor to 600mhz and 2 cores
Replaced the MicroSD & SIM Card slots
Tried to reflow the solder contacts on the mainboard with a hair dryer. No idea how effective this really was
Added a piece of plastic to apply pressure to the SD/SIM slot connector (used a cut up bank card)
Examined the battery and found it flawless. Replaced it anyway
Tried copper tape on the rear cover to act as a heatsink
Tried applying arctic silver thermal paste to the chips that come in contact with the body of the phone
Nothing I've tried has really had much of an impact. The device is not under warranty.
Is there anything else I should try? This does appear to be a very common issue but answers seem few and far between.
I've read about people believing its a mainboard issue, only to replace the mainboard and have the same issue occur again?

Hi mate,
Some times the no sim card error may be related to Imei problem or EFS being corrupted ( my case) check your imei dial *#06# see if the imei number match the one behind the battery
I am having a similar problem and the IMEI does not match, what can i do to solve this?

Found that the IMEI reported by *#06# consistently matches the one behind the battery, even when the no sim fault occurs.
I don't have an EFS backup, but with EFS Pro I was able to perform a backup, format the EFS, and restore from the backup. I also did its fix permissions routine, but it didn't change anything. So I don't think its an EFS problem.

EFS Pro. Better if you have an EFS backup.

Mate the problem is you maybe doing a backup of something corrupted .....so you basically are putting back whatever "bad" was there again...

So I've flashed the following two files with ODIN 3.07, no change. First tried one and it seemed to work, but after it faulted I tried the second, and had it fault again.
http://www.4shared.com/zip/ZG0QtCq_ba/I9505_efs.html
http://www.4shared.com/zip/Z1yKu1Upce/I9505_modem_patch_File_for_Unl.html
That should've rewritten the /efs and baseband?

Hi Mate
Every EFS is unique it has your imei information among others , flashing a different efs could had fix it but in the other hand you may have a different imei information...
anyhow as I said error may be related to Imei problem or EFS being corrupted ( my case) in your case it may be a hardware issue....

Hi Can anyone help
I have an xda exec & love it very much but last week I started getting error messages saying invalid sim installed. sometimes a soft reset will cure it, sometimes going into & back out of flight mode & sometimes the only thing to do is remove & re-install the sim.
YES I have tried the sim in another device which worked perfectly & yes I have tried another sim in the device which had the same problems.
I tried for a replacement from O2 but it was out of stock & discontinued so they sent me a trion instead. nice but screen res is a bit low for using remote desktop sensibly.
I have tried flashing the O2 rom as well as some wm6 roms but to no avail.
Finally I swapped the screen onto a spare I had with a crushed screen but that device had a lot of screen flicker & a grainy effect to the screen.
Please help if anyone knows how to cure this problem.
Bad news: from reading your post, I think this might be a hardware problem. Have you dropped your device recently? If yes, that might have damaged the motherboard's connections to the SIM-slot, or the slot itself. If not, then it might be due to aging. However, in this case, a simple soft-resetting should not cure the problem.
You could try a hard-reset as well, your device might have caught a permanent bug.
However, you might want to wait for someone more knowledgeable than me in this topic.
Good luck
Thanks for your reply
The phone has been dropped a few times, but no visible damage to sim module. Think it is down to hardware, & is probably ageing.
It doesn't have to be a visible crack or such in the module, it's enough if the springs and stuff loosened up a little bit, and there, you have lost connection to the SIM, since the whole thing requires the card's contacts to be pressed up against the contacts in the module. even if there's a tiny bit of gap there, the SIM will appear to have disappeared.
The problem is, the warranty will not cover such, because this classifies as physical damage, and as such, it is not subject to warranty.
any one now where i can get one? dropped mine into the drink and after drying it up real good it only works as a tablet now, no more phone function.it cant detect IMEI and has no service( service disabled) sim card works fine on other phones by the way.
the phones a: LG G2 d802
open it up and clean it with battery detached with 90-99-100% alcohol, dry try again. Not fixed check which areas look broken/rusted/busted replace those. Chances are you may replace entire phone.
His EFS partition seems to be missing. Probably some storage damage.
Update: There are other people in https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/ref-galaxy-s4-i9505-modems-bootloaders-t3315987 with the same issue, so it seems to be a SW issue. Still not resolved though.
So i create this thread to gather information as any search on the internet about S4 hardware failures seems to point into software related solutions only.
I encountered a problem after flashing RR-N-v5.8.2-20170414-jfltexx-Official.zip on top of a previous version. I was not able to use mobile network. I couldn't make phone calls and mobile data didn't quite work even though I was able to get an IP address at times. Later I found out that mobile network works well if I force it to 2G only.
I went and flashed multiple modems&bootloaders. I also flashed stock rom with Odin and even re-partitioned my phone with a .pit file. Nothing changed. I can also see my IMEI and the phone asks for my SIM card's PIN code as it should. I also have a signal strength of around -90 to -75 dBm.
At this point I assume it's safe to say that my problem is a hardware problem. I've already opened my phone to reattach the coaxial cable and speaker module as they have antenna contacs but I couldn't find anything suspicious. Except for the ICs.
The Qualcomm MDM9215M in particular has something on top of the Qualcomm logo. I wonder if this is is a clue. The chip is a "GSM / W-CDMA / LTE Baseband Processor w/ Memory" so an issue with it would probably fit my symptoms. But if anyone knows if these images show that it's clearly defective or if there's nothing inordinary, let me know!

I bought my phone second hand and I knew that it had had it's screen changed in a workshop. It might be the reason why I see a missing shiny tape (thermal material/interference protection?) when comparing the next image to this: https://youtu.be/zm4f2XjQLAM?t=12m24s The tape is right on top of the MDM9215M.
Missing shiny tape where the MDM9215M faces:

Any ideas?
Edit: The goop on top of the chip is probably some protective material and the chip doesn't look defective, so the reason for my problems might as well be somewhere else.
Edit2: I also notice travelling lines on the screen while 2G is in use. I suspect the missing tape causes interference to the screen circuity close to the MDM9215M. It was caused by my newly arrived battery door which is probably made of aluminum foil.
did you have that same problem with stock rom?
it could be a RR bug.

Yup. I flashed both KK and LP with Odin and even re-partitioned my phone with a pit file to make sure there can be nothing left from previous installations.
The same thing happened to me, the problem started after updating the baseband for by odin.

I wasn't able to fix it. This seems like a common failure mode on these devices. But tell me if you find a solution
Skipping long story, finally I've decided to replace eMMC which finally went in to boot mode saying emmc read error. I've got flashed chip from aliexpress but when I was searching for it I used keywords "Note 4 emmc", and missed info that chip is for edge version (N915F), where my phone is standard one (N910F). So, what now, fit it and see what happen? fit and flash N910 software immediately? I suspect there will be issue with incorrect product code. Thinking about running phone disassembled with peltier attached to memory to see if I can root it, copy efs then replace the chip and restore proper content.
Is there pinout of eMMC KMR210008M-A805 so could flash it externally?
Repair failed.
Using peltier cooling I was able to root the phone and make full backup. Phone was working perfectly fine this way. Removal of old chip went fine. To fit new memory, first time I used different hot air station, it burned memory and processor. Later on I've checked it's air temperature out of nozzle, it was 150-200ºC more than set.
BTW "new flashed" chips sold on aliexpress in fact are reballed chips removed from scrapped phones.
Hello
On my XC with LOS 16 Android 9 sim card is randomly lost and need to reboot to get back online.
I suspect an OS issue because no specific situation ( shaking, falling, shock...) make this happen. Most of the time, no event is clearly is guilty.
As someone meet this behaviour ? do exist a way to fix it ?
Thanks
Try cleaning it's contacts or replacing it.
A cracked mobo solder joint or trace do it too.
So you think it's a hardware issue than software. I will do.

If it's not a new phone assume phone hardware last otherwise return it.
Try clearing sim card tool kit data.
Clear system cache.
Try replacing the sim card; they can and do fail usually from ESD damage due to poor handling.
Always treat a sim card like a stick of ram. Follow ESD safe handling procedures.
Nobody does and that the #1 reason for failures!
A failure can happen on the spot (a mercy) or days, weeks, months even years after the ESD exposure. Don't let some goofball in leather soled shoes walking on carpet in a dry ACed store even touch it
In over 10 years I only ever saw one tech handle a sim card correctly. Like ram sticks they leave the manufacturer fully functional... until they are mishandled.
I've never had a blown ram stick or sim...
ok, how to clearing cache ?
what is ESD ?
it's an used phone in good condiiton ans the simcard was in other phone before but environements are so differents that is not a reliable comparison point.
thanks
