The fix was for Advanced calling 1.0 which was implemented during the last change. Here is what the Verizon website says about how it is charged:
Advanced Calling 1.0 is available at no additional charge, and HD Voice is included in existing plans.
HD Voice calls are billed as standard voice calls according to your plan. No data charges apply.
Mobile-to-Mobile calls that happen to be HD Voice calls are charged just like traditional Mobile-to-Mobile calls and are billed against your monthly minute allowance according to your plan.
A video call is an HD Voice call combined with real-time video. The voice portion is billed as a standard voice call, according to your plan. The video portion is billed as data, according to your data plan. No data charges apply to video calls transmitted over Wi-Fi.
Note: An average 1-minute video call uses about 6 - 8 MB of data. The actual data consumption of your video call may vary. You can estimate your data usage using our online
Can someone grab the update from their root-cache folder, copy to their internal storage and upload it? Need Droid Maxx version.
You have to be rooted to do this.

No you will not. It's just a added feature that you can do through my Verizon app. We have unlimited data. You will lose your ringback tone if you have one and you'll have to set you voice mail up again cause it uses a different voicemail.

Has anyone with Tmobile installed this update? If so, has it caused the phone to misbehave?
Also, can you change the APN settings for ims now? I would like to plug in the Tmobile settings, but I could not change the sip server in the last version.
I upgraded on my wife's phone and it still worked. I only put her t-mobile SIM in it, tried it to see if it would still work and then put it back in her other phone. Nothing amazing and not a real good test, but ti still worked to call and text. It also had a data connection. That is all I can give you for now.

Also, if you use Google Voice for your voicemail as I do, it will stop working and can't auto configure to set it up again. You have to follow the instructions for manually forwarding voicemail to google voice. After that it works fine.

Thank you for this! I had numerous messages I did not know about because of this.
so.... worth the upgrade?
It's not like I use the advanced calling, is it currently broken?
I really don't feel like unrooting, returning to stock, just to use the OTA, and set it all back up again.
How do I turn off the OTA checks/notifications again, if I decide to ignore this update?

yeah, I'm also unlocked, but with custom recovery, and xposed, and tether mod... usually these OTAs want all that stuff to be original to succeed.
I can conform this works fine on Tmobile. Would love to be able to add tmobiles volte settings though.

Yeah, I was just saying that on the off chance that you, or a reader, might be in the same boat as me. I know OTA's don't always work properly if someones only rooted. Mine kept root after the update.

I'm also unlocked, custom recovery, xposed, etc. Update went fine (TWRP handled it fine) other than it told me it was unsuccessful when it was done, but it did work (I'm on SU6-7 now), and I had to restart xposed (install/update the framework). I was surprised it went so well, I thought I was going to have to flash stock recovery and reroot, etc, too.

That's kind of shocking. I tried it. Twrp started but then just sat there waiting for input from me. I think it then occasionally rebooted into recovery on its own, until I cleared cache. Definitely didn't update, asked again today, if I wanted to. What version of twrp do you have? Did you install the file from the cache folder, or did it do it by itself?

Hey guys
I have a nexus 4 going through rogers wireless, i have a 6gb data plan as well. I am using the wifi hot spot setting and creating the wifi network for my laptop. My laptop connects no problem and shows full signal, however I can't seem to surf the Web or do anything.
The laptop connects fine to my home network, and the nexus 4 is updated to the latest firmware. It is also stock and not rooted, any help?
Just to add, i do not have LTE, this is a regular data plan and tether
I'm not going to much help myself, sorry. My hotspot worked fine out of the box (I'm with Mobilicity), though I recall that I had to set up a password for it to start working correctly. Have you tried USB tethering for the sake of troubleshooting?
Just tried to tether via usb and no connection either!
I am on Rogers, my WiFi tether works fine, I don;t think it maters what data plan you have, I have a 10GB 3 year old plan. But It has to be ion WAP2 security, if you don;t do the password it won't work.
My USB tether only worked through this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet&hl=en
You need to have it on the PC as well http://pdanet.co/
Re: WiFi, I know you saying you don;t have LTE, but just to make sure go to dial pad and type in *#*#4636#*#* and make sure towards the bottom WCDMA Proffered is selected. Then check that your APN is not ltemobile.apn in settings.
Also sometimes it helps to do a trouble shoot on the connection in windows, rarely but sometimes it works from second third time.
Try PDAnet, I think it has WiFi tethering as well.

very strange: so,
What's the set up you have, ROM/KERNEL/RADIO/GAPPS?
For the test of it, if you want, I had this and it worked, you can just back up and flash this set ups:
ROM: Slim or RootBox
Kernel: Harsh
GAPPS: Slim or Banks
Radio: .33 (I have not tested it on .48)
Also if your usb tethering did not work with the PDANet, then probably something wrong in the ROM. USB tether needs drivers so if they are not installed properly will be a probably, but since WifI is not working as well I a pretty sure it's a ROM problem, maybe you just need to to do a clean flash of a similar in features ROM to what you are using now.
If you really like the one you using now, one good idea would be to do a logcat right after it connects and you can;t brows the web, and submit that to the dev thread of the ROM.

Appreciate the assistance
My phone is 100% stock and I don't want to tinker with it, I was hoping it would work as promised out of the box, is it the latest update of jelly bean causing issues?
sometimes the provider blocks tethering until you buy their tether plan. even though some people say it works fine, you could still be one of the few that were blocked. i tethered for four years fine, until one day tmobile blocked it until i bought a tethering plan.
Every time I tether my N4 I have to go the through Windows trouble shooting process, it never connects right the first time.

Rogers said that any plan over 1gb of data is automatically allowed to tether
Try checking your APN settings (do a APN reset). If you have more than one, it may be using the wrong one.

Right Rogers does not block it and its free.
It maybe the new radio, but since you are not rooted, not much you can do.
One thing is try a tethering app in play store it does not need root.
Two, do a factory reset in settings somewhere.
Try changing the APN to ltemobile.apn it may work better.
Last resort is to email Google support maybe they will answer.
But also like previously mentioned do troubleshoot the connection in windows maybe few times.
Also try WAP, and no password at all.

Ok here we go:
So I am sorry I did not remember this sooner, but my friend had this issue and here is the problem and solution.
I can only speak for Rogers, other carrier maybe different. The problem is with data package but not that tethering is not active (it is by default on Rogers) but that the data is wrong. Most likely you had an Iphone or Blackberry before, or one of these devices is still listed on your account as primary(you can;t change that, they just go by what did you buy from them last, then won;t put Nexus on it).
So with Rogers there 3 different data sets, for Iphone, for BB and for Android, you need obviously Android and you don't have it.
There probably some differences but the major once is that on BB one you get free LTE on android (on older once) but it wont tether probably with other devices,(actually my friend prefers LTE over tether so he capt BB plant on Note 2)
What you do is, call Rogers Tech support,(preferably not from your phone, so you can test it at the same time) don't tell them you have nexus 4, tell them it's S3 or Note 2(just a device they actually sell)tell them that you have (depending on your previous phone with them) the Iphone or BB data there, and you need them to change it to Android as your tethering not working. They can say what ever they want, but make sure they change it, even if they say it's BS, still ask them to remove and add it, but they should know what are you talking about. If the guy is a real stubborn, asking to put on a different data plan, like flex or something just to try (make sure any changes they make don;t interfere with your payment or discounts on the account)
Once the guy/girl says it's done, turn off your phone after 30 sec. turn it back on and check if it works.
Worst comes to worst, which is shouldn't because I know for a fact they have three different datas, ask to speak to Customer Relations Department, tell them your friend had the same problem and that's how rogers fixed it.
In fact, no mater if the Tech fixes it or not still speak to Customer Rel. Dept. and just tell them that you are not happy with the data, it gives you problems, and that Telus offered you a same plan for cheaper and $350 credit for cancellation fee if you move, so you would like to see if you can get $15 off your plan.
Hope that helps.
Thank you!
After dealing with 4 customer service reps, all telling me everything was fine, I called, used your advice, and everything is working.
This was also affecting my MMS messaging, not just tethering.

Although I'm from Israel and my phone carrier is Pelephone, it was my problem aswell. I contacted them few times about tethering without success, they said it can't be blocked by them, neither they have special data plan for that. After I read this post I contacted them again and asked them to set my phone as Nexus 4 on their data base. I turned off my nexus, wait a few, turned on, tried again and it finnaly worked!!
Many thanks!! I'm surprised this issue isn't so common on the Internet.

Sprint released an update yesterday for their S5's which enables WiFi calling. That got me thinking and after poking around in settings.db to see if the toggle existed in our notification panel, i found it is - "WifiCalling". Im wondering if anyone is up to digging into the code of the Sprint phone and seeing if it could be modified to work on the VZW.
Forgive the improper use of "Whose" in the title, it should be "Who's"

Correct. WiFi calling isn't something we could simply activate on our phones. Verizon has to support it in order for the calls/texts to be properly routed, and as far as I know they don't (outside of using a network extender).
The Verizon messages app supports texts over wifi so this feature must already be partially enabled

I use Google Voice, paired with a free pbxes.org account and Sipdroid on my phone. Calls work just fine this way using my google voice line. Incoming and outgoing. It's like having a second line that just uses data. Sipdroid allows me to specify usage by placing a + in front of the phone number. This prevents me from needing to switch back and forth between default dialers or wait for it to prompt me, which messes up handsfree calling in the car.
Anyone get this to work on Verizon? As soon as I insert Verizon sim, WiFi calling option goes away in settings, and phone app wants me to enable wifi calling while trying to make a call.
No luck here. Have you called Verizon? I did but my signal is too weak. This is probably going to be a deal breaker for me.
I'm just making do with GV for WiFi calls for now.

You've stated this before, can you explain? From what I've read, wifi calling is not a feature of Google Voice. You can make calls with GV, but it is still using the carrier's signal and not wifi.

Yes, they said "We can't guaranty all services will work or not work on non-Verizon branded phones".
If you remove the sim and restart the phone, the WiFi calling option appears again in settings. Add the sim and it's gone. I guess the software has to let the sim dictate what options the carrier wishes to be enabled on each phone. That is what "verified" means?

You need the Verizon firmware to enable wifi calling and unless Verizon start selling this phone the firmware won't be available.

new sim, and took off hd calling of my account and then re-added it back to my account and rebooted. i also went into the 4363 testing menu and made sure volte was turned on. as well as the enhanced 4glte option was switched on.
maybe because Verizon sell the pixel and iPhone, they provide google and apple with the necessary files.
It sucks, I really wish WiFi calling would work. Maybe eventually it will, I remember when VoLTE was proprietary and now almost all phones support it.

I went to hell and back trying to get OB 8.1 to work with my Verizon sim OB3 and down work without issue.
Anyway I wound up getting a new sim card from Verizon then went back to OB3 did the OTA and when it booted back up I had to do the prl update *228 once I finished the steps I noticed I had wifi calling enabled in all my menus it didn't ask for an e911 address on my phone but it did on my wear24 watch which is synced to my phone and number. the watch can do wifi calling and texting as well. Hell of a deal for under 70 bucks. Not sure if that triggered something on the phone?
I have enabled Wifi Calling on my PH-1 and I know for a fact that my carrier supports it. It works fine too, but it's set to "Mobile Preferred". I chose this setting because my Wifi isn't too reliable. However, whenever I call, it uses Wifi even though I am getting LTE+? Is there any way to fix this?
Does anyone have any idea? I have looked all over the internet but have not found any solution? Could it possibly be my carrier?

I'm not sure. I have seen 3 Sprint system apps though under "Apps and Notifications", but I don't know if that counts. I got it straight from Amazon, if that helps.

I finally got it working by installing the Open Market Oreo firmware, setting up WiFi calling them updating to Pie firmware

Is there any way to do this without rooting or unlocking the bootloader? I want to preserve my warranty for as long as possible.

Not that I know of. I don't think they would look at your WiFi calling settings if sent out for repairs. Once you install Oreo open market firmware just relock the bootloader, setup your phone including TMobile WiFi calling settings. Once you update to Pie they shouldn't be able to tell anything because all different variants use the same firmware and your bootloader will be locked encase you send your phone out for repairs.
The other option is to use Google Voice. WiFi calling works great on it.

But does it use your carrier phone number or are talking about the Google appointed number?

You do have to use your GV number. In my case it's irrelevant because I ported my number over to GV some time ago.

So your carrier number and Google number are the same?

No, your carrier number will change. The port to GV takes approximately 24 hours. So you have to deal with a GV assigned number for a day. After that though you have your regular old number. I barely even know my new Verizon number as I don't give it to anybody. I figure this way, I'll never have to worry about WiFi calling or who my carrier is again.

I like having a different number for when I do mechanic work, don't want to get calls for every little thing at different times of the night, specially when it's unrelated to what I fixed lol
I have the same problem. Set my wifi calling to Mobile preferred but sometimes my calls use wifi calling even when I have cellular reception. Please let me know when you find a solution.
and I think it's funny that nobody addressed your original issue.

I have the same issue. It was working fine on Oreo. I tried flash.all fastboot using the stock firmware without success. Let me know if you have a solution. Ty
Edit: I got it fixed by flashing flashall back to stock Oreo 8.1 open market from Essential website then let it updated OTA to Pie and my WiFi calling still working fine.

My WiFi stopped working again after I turned it off but I can't turn it back on just like before. Any time I tried to turn it on the phone app forced close.
Considering thanks to T-Mobile's wonderful coverage (says I have good signal strength, but it's not) I have Wi-Fi calling enabled all the time and it works well on the 5Ghz ac side of the router...not so well on the 2.4Ghz b/g which is fine. Again something carrier specific. I went to Pie and kept the WiFi calling running.

Surprisingly, my WiFi calling is now working after updated my phone to today's November security update.
Hello,
I know this has been touched on before but I have not seen anything recent about it and I just got this phone today and I have no incoming SMS. I have everything that uses data working fine (email, etc), and outgoing SMS, and incoming and outgoing calls are fine, but I am not getting ANY INCOMING SMS.
Used the SIM from the Google Pixel 2 XL that I had before this phone, went to the Verizon store, they put the OP 8 on my account with the correct IMEI from SIM slot 1 and it was able to pull my number over and everything else was working including 4g, but incoming SMS was/is not working.
Does anybody know why this is still going on, and how to fix it. Do I need to get a new SIM from a VZW corporate store? Do I need to tell them anything special like CDMA-less provisioning, and if so, do I tell the store employee that, or do I have to call tech support?
Also just so you know I also tried another sim from another phone number on my account and it also does not receive incoming SMS, everything else works fine on that sim and number also.
Thanks guys, really don't want to have to take this phone back!
I had the exact same problem with my one+ pro on Verizon as well. I ended up going back to a corporate store and they just gave me a new sim card with a 5g logo on it and all seems to be well again. I can finally receive text messages again.
You need them to put CDMA-LESS on your account. It basically makes all your SMS and not just voice, etc to go across LTE instead of defaulting back to CDMA for incoming txt messages. Once you do that, BOOM, it'll work. I've had more success chatting with support than going to the stores to get it done. If the person you're talking to doesn't understand CDMA less, disconnect and try again.
Hey everybody, just wanted to let you know that I got it figured out by calling support and getting someone who knew what CDMAless was and they provisioned that and it works now. Although what is weird is that it only works with googles messaging app, not the default app.
This should be stickied

I spent at least an hour on the phone with two levels of Verizon support trying to resolve the problem of not receiving texts. Verizon supports has to add the "CDMA-less" tag to your account and device. After this is done, the phone and texts work flawlessly.

it works for the default messaging app as of yesterday
I just went through all of this with Verizon. Because of the pandemic getting through to customer support is quite difficult. The only way I can get through was with Facebook messenger, and the link that they sent so I could verify my account was broken. Finally they called me and it took a whole 10 seconds to fix this. Too bad it took 2 days to get ahold of somebody so I can get it fixed..........

I just tried this, and the person claimed they had added it, but it definitely did NOT work, at least not while I had the 4G SIM installed. However, my OnePlus 8 5G UW had come with a new Verizon 5G SIM in the box, so we had them activate that new 5G SIM, at which point yes, everything started working. So Verizon really wants you to switch to a 5G SIM.

Big red must have changed tactics. I had this problem last September I think it was, it took a couple of phone calls to Verizon but they added CDMA less to my account and then they said they had to send some data to my phone or reactivated or something like that, but anyway I have not had this problem since then.
