Nexus 6 Quality Issues (2 out of 2 phones) - Nexus 6 General

So, I bought a Nexus 6 for my wife and at first it was great. But a few weeks later, she was complaining about the camera. I check it out and there is definitely something wrong. It seems that sometimes when the camera focuses, the optical image stabilizer would jump around. It moves so much, that it seems to hit it's limits and you hear it "click". Makes recording videos useless. Worse than having no stabilizer at all.
We're beyond the 14-day return period for Sprint, so I do an advanced exchange RMA with Motorola. Two days later, the replacement phone arrives. It looks like a brand-new sealed box. But when I take the phone out, I see the back cover is separating from the phone. How does the phone like this even get put into a box? Unless the back cover separated after it was placed inside? I didn't even bother to try to turn it on and contacted Motorola via online chat. We'll see what the next steps are, but so far, I'm not impressed with the quality control. Customer service response is pretty good so far.

I am not going to say its anyone's fault but could be multiple things .... Have you seen how package companies treat packages they are shipping .... But yes more than likely that is a problem from factory

Yeah, but not in this case. The box had a few minor dings, but was in otherwise near-perfect condition. The seal was still in perfect shape.

I had the same,
but not with the back cover problem. I had my original Nexus 6 replaced 2 times.
Within 3-4 days of minimal use my nexus 6 was getting a deep scratch on the screen which was very annoying.
This is the 3rd nexus 6 i am using and i did not take out the protector with which it came with until i bought a screen guard.
So i am still worried, if i take out the screen guard it will get a scratch again.
GG3 does not seem to be implemented in nexus 6 i guess.

After three weeks, my camera got progressively worse, taking blurry shots and double exposures,.. Looked like the optical stabilization failed, I got RMA started on 30 Dec, but finally I should receive My replacement today..... Here's hoping I don't have problems.

I've been using mine for more than two weeks now without any screen protector and the screen is perfect! I even carry it in my bag together with my Lumia 1520 and no problems at all! And Yes, the Nexus 6 IS with Gorilla Glass 3! I've seen people trying very hard to scratch this glass and they have all failed!

It scratches Buddy trust me. My nexus 5 has a few

I replaced my att nexus 6 5 times for various problem. I don't want to get it started here. Anyways, I was expecting a lot better build quaility for this price point comparing to N5. I am really disappointed. GG Motorola.

What camera are you using to take the pictures of the Defects?
The warranty process with Motorola is always good. The advance exchange program is what sets Motorola apart from the rest. I had to replace a Moto G once through this program, and very seamless with 2-day shipping.

On my 5th (One DOA). My current device has the loud, clicky haptic feedback. I've had HTC devices that had clicky haptic, but this is the worst I've experienced. I'm just going to keep it unless it gets worse. After all the screen uniformity issues I've seen, I have no energy left to play the RMA lottery anymore.

I am getting my T-Mobile warranty phone today next day shipping. OIS failed, bad battery (max 4 hr SOT), yellow screen even when RGB'd and red when low brightness, noisy vibration. Hope this one is better or I'll be jumping to a Z3 possibly. My GF had to warranty her Z3 for a dead LCD so I'm not convinced it'd be better...

Just a few observations. The phone would never be able to fit in the box with any bulge. Secondly, for a bulge to be that size it would be there are a lot of torque, yet the sides are popping off. The backcover is flexible but not so flexible as to do that where only that portion pops up like that. Perhaps a thin plastic like the Note 4, but not the hard plastic on the Nexus 6. As bad as the QC is, the factory or the guy would have to be insane to let that out of the factory. The visible glue suggests excessive pulling force. Seems like a botched attempt at removing the back to me

I don't have an obligation to defend myself, but I can assure you that the phone came out of the box like that. The bulge is only on one edge and it is maybe 1/8"? That's not enough to "burst" out of the box. It's definitely close-able, even if the phone is not lying completely flat. But think about this logically -- what reason do I have to make a post like this if I had somehow botched an attempt at removing the back? And what's the reason for removing the back cover anyhow? Is there something I can get to that I'm not aware of? And if I were trying to remove the back, well, it doesn't look botched at all -- Why not just continue to pull the back off? I would be half-way there. It just doesn't make any sense.

Received my RMA and it was not in new packaging but had a factory screen protector. OIS works on this and the vibration is not fudged.

I read about the lifting problem on Phandroid, but the picture they posted wasn't nearly as bad as this one. Your experience is probably an exception amongst exceptions.

I have two (white) Nexus 6's coming from Amazon France (apparently it has a full warranty on them so..), now getting a bit worried that the quality might not be up to par. For the price point, I was expecting better. I've seen more than enough articles/posts on the net from people with problems; for the lack of phones currently releasing in the market, I'd say a good amount have defects. Hopefully the two phones I've just ordered have come from a 'second'/newer batch produced with higher QC, and hopefully your replacement for this 2nd Nexus you have is also the same.

Onnia 7 QC issues?

I've just been told by t-mobile that the Omnia 7 has QC issues and their deliveries yesterday were returned to their suppliers, anyone know what these might be?
I just picked one up today from Orange!.. I wonder if mine is affected
I heard from vodafone store that their delivery of LG Optimus (Win7) came in and had to be recalled immediately without sale due to a bluetooth issue.
The build quality of the Omnia is one of the things that worries me after reports like this and the issues with the Galaxy series.
Evilanglic, since you now have your hands on one, what are your impressions of the device? Does it seem solid?
Much more solid than I was expecting. I thought it would feel like a light plastic shell like the Samsung Galaxy S.
It really is very nice, no creaks, just a solid slab of deep black technology! Good times.
The back is actually wrapped in metal to the edge of the screen on the sides, it is only the top and bottom of the device which are solid plastic sort-of-cap/ends of the device.
You definitely can't call it a unibody (or can you?..) but as I say... sort of mostly 'wrapped' in a sheet of metal.
It was a close call between the (SAMOLED) Omnia and the (very nice crisp LCD) HTC Mozart, the latter fits the hand better of course due to size, but in the end the slick all black face of the Omnia, adorned with its high contrast SAMOLED screen, just made it worth it despite the low actual PPI!
It would have been nice if the rockers and camera buttons where more metallic or... metal, but instead they are old school black plastic. They work well nonetheless.
The home button is also not the most premium of push switches (compared to iPhone of course) but it is nice to have a soild key!
I would urge you to get both of these devices side by side in the store if you can, but be careful because it took me at least 20 minutes to tell the man which one I wanted to take out lol...

I'm jealous. I have about 2 weeks before WP7 comes out in the US. That and you guys got the better selection of phones (minus Micro SD expansion). I am definitely getting the Focus though. Best choice out of the options available in my opinion.

Yeah. I wont touch a single Samsung phone after the trouble the Vibrant gave my stepmom. It's not fun trying to give tech support to someone 1500 miles away, over the phone with the issues, to a lady with no clue about technology.
EDIT: It reminded me of the time I had to help someone with Windows ME. They didn't know where the "desktop" was! As you can imagine, that was a loooooong phone call.

I've owned a few samsungs in the past (years ago lol), and they didn't give me any trouble. I suppose it was before the major smartphone race of the the last few years though haha.
I only went for the Omnia after holding it myself, there was no way I was going to order a Samsung phone without getting into a store and exploring it - but it was more solid than expected.
Hopefully if there are any support problems in the future, I will just take it to the high street store I got it from and play super dumb and demand a replacement or different phone lol... no harm done.
It seems like a negative thing to say but keep in mind that the phone really is good right now, no problems at all, everything works perfectly so far.
Note for those not in the know: the location based issues of Android Samsungs are not present here! On maps it focuses down with GSM triangulation and GPS pinpoint kicks in a couple of seconds later, super speedy!
Well that's a relief. I suppose the biggest factor that makes it feel so much better is that it's got some metal, right?
Mine's just arrived.
First impressions are very good. It feels very sturdy with no creaks and the metal casing is nice. It feels much more solid than my HTC Blackstone, although I am worried about such a large screen getting damaged!
It's going to have to stay off whilst the sim card registers. Annoying wait ahead!

I was reading conflicting reviews on the Mozart's camera and since I mainly use my mobile for web browsing the extra screen acres sold it for me.
The screen quality is awsome by the way. The device also looks way better in the flesh. It seems it may also have Cornings gorilla glass which would be a welcome addition!

For web browsing I might have thought it possibly more comfortable to use the Mozart's SLCD with RGB pixels (higher subpixel count) if you have good eyes that is lol.
I just cant get over how amazing the 4" SAMOLED looks though...
Because of the all black screen surround, and the nature of the WP7 text laid out to the edge of the screen, it sort of looks like your phone is just one massive display, which a lot of it is... lol
The blacks of the SAMOLED just merge with the black surround! So cool.
Where does the screen end?! lol

I am a happy omnia 7 owner. Just like what the other said, solid construction, beautiful screen.
But the build in app is sub-par (vs lg optimus) and I hope I don't regret choosing a device with 8GB of storage.

A user over on MoDaCo forums is reporting that their T-Mobile account manager has told them that the Omnia 7 has been temporarily pulled due to software issues.
I've been waiting on one of these for some time as well, and was told today that their most recent update for handset stocks (issued internally today) did not include a new batch of Omnia 7s. The CSR I spoke to wouldn't be drawn on any specific problems with the handset, except to say that "there have been a few issues" with the ones we've received, and that I would be receiving a call in due course to let me know when mine would be delivered.
Does anyone else know anything about this?
gcaw - apparently they have dispatched Omnia 7's now on T-mobile, so I'd get on the phone ASAP.

As it happens, fifteen hours after I'd made my previous post, I received a call from T-Mobile to let me know that they had stock and confirming delivery later today, but I'm grateful that you informed me of that - and hopefully others will have taken note of that information and successfully placed orders themselves.
I was also pleased to hear from the CSR (the same one I spoke to yesterday) that T-Mobile is extending the same deal to new Omnia 7 owners as it offers to Android buyers, giving 3GB of monthly data usage at no additional cost, rather than the standard 1GB offered under the fair usage policy for other handsets.
Compared with the rather pitiful 500MB offered on O2's contracts, that's a pretty awesome deal.

Well it had to happen sooner or later, in under a week I've dropped the Omnia 7 while lazily trying to hit snooze just moments ago (typing this message with my phone now lol). Dropped from about table height, and while it was dark, sounded like it landed on a corner first... Picked it up in the dark and dropped it again, this time hitting face flat on the ground.. My floors got a wood finish on top of a normal concrete slab so its pretty solid. Shocked and not feeling so lazy anymore, turned lights on, inspected phone, and absolutely no scratches to be seen...i think this is due to the matte looking polycarbonate plastic they use, plus the color looking like its been amalgamated with the actual plastic, I say this because I remember on my htc touch HD the bezel would scratch/chip so easily because all it was was some cheap paint over plastic/metal? As for glass, i read it's gorilla glass, whether or not it is, I'm glad it isn't scratched... My screen protector can't come soon enough,
Either way, I'm glad to know the Omnia7 is a solid beast . Though in truth, after dropping it, my excitement and feelings of it being a new toy has slightly washed off... My feeling now is 'it might be damaged somewhere'

Ahh, yes. Monday... beginning of the week. Oh! And the screen on my Nexus 7 cracked.

Not really sure how it happened. I had the thing in my pocket, as I had done no less than 300 other times. Never sat down or had anything else in my pocket, etc. Just did it as I was getting other things together to go out the door. Went to get in my car, took it out of my pocket and got inside. When I set it on the passenger seat I took notice to what I thought was a hair. Of course, it wasn't a hair. It was a crack. I sat the thing on my passenger seat, and drove to work, which is like... 500 yards away... looked over to pick it up and go inside and I had a second crack branched off of the original. Nice.
I did not have noticeable screen lift or creaking of any sort. Previously I had applied a good amount of pressure by hand to the area to see if I could duplicate what other users were talking about, but I never could. If I had to judge, based on insanely crazy ADD assessments, I would say I had the ever so slightest amount of screen lift on the left side. I'm talking a difference of about a thickness of a sheet of paper, and the ridge on the left still existed, even though I would have to say it may have not been as deep as the right side.
So now I'm kind of wondering what to do. I've never worked on a tablet, but I've taken apart countless laptops and even done LCD swaps on them. Part of me wonders if I should just purchase a new screen for it. I mean, can you do that? I'm looking around online and I'm finding LCD replacements, but I'm not sure what to think of them, as it's the glass that cracked. Is the surface glass/LCD panel itself all one unit?
I'm halfway debating that I un-root this thing (since ASUS seems to be a hater in that department) and send it back to ASUS for repair. Of course, it'll be a 2 week turn around, which is awesome, and I'm not even sure if it'll be covered. I always felt a screen crack was a hard thing to argue. Something involving pressure had to do it, but oddly I have no explanation for it.
I have no idea, overall... what do you guys think? I began to really use the tablet a lot, and I even just got the thing fully rooted to use USB OTG with it and my 500GB external HDD packed of stuff, which I thought would be nice on a trip coming this October.
tl:dr, screen cracked, which solution?
Purchase new LCD replacement, install myself. Pros - could epoxy any weak area on the left side. Cons - it's a repair that costs money that I'm not sure is justified on such a new unit
Un-root, return to ASUS, hope there's no hassle. Pros - could be free warrantied repair. Cons - is it "really" fixed against left-side screen problems? And LOL @ having to un-root.
Sell cheap on Ebay, set cash aside, wait for something else. Pros - maybe something better is soon to come? Cons - I'm down a device for what could be a semi lengthy time, which I had begun to use as a personal laptop replacement (between desktop and tablet, it was a pretty solid combo for me)
First of all, can you please verify that the left side of your screen is actually below the bezel?

Even if the screen lift is subtle enough to ignore, there's going to be an equally subtle amount of flex. That means repetitive stress, and there have been user reports of lifted screens cracking under normal use.

Although the cause of your crack is unverified, I don't think we should assume that it happening on the left side is a coincidence. Your experience is consistent with other reports.
I personally returned three units for minor screen lift and asked for a refund on the third because I decided to treat this as a potentially serious issue. In my opinion, only customers who trust the Play store warranty implicitly should consider tolerating a hair of separation.
I hope you can resolve this with ASUS. It's a longshot but worth trying.
And by 'resolve' I mean convince them to recognize this as a manufacturing flaw before sending it in.

There is demonstrably a manufacturing flaw with the N&'s screen LINK
Any flexing is out with the design parameters of any hard glass touch screen and as such flexing will lead to premature failure.
I understand. I've been retracing my steps all morning and I'm downright baffled at what I did to cause this. I had the tablet on the kitchen counter, along with my keys, phone, and laptop bag... put the phone in one pocket, tablet in another, walked outside, took tablet out of my pocket, and bam - I saw it. So it's a matter of about 9 steps I took to my car. No stairs, no epic falls on my rear end, nothing like that. It's because of that (coupled with the fact it happened on the left side) that I'm wondering if it is some more food for thought in regard to it being a design flaw.

Well, I somewhat tried to do that over the phone just now. I didn't have my serial number handy but I did everything I could aside from giving them the serial number, so I need to call back later when I can get the box and give them the rest of the info. As I talked with the rep, I explained to him I've done a great deal of reading about the Nexus 7, and I stressed that the left-side screen issues don't seem to be exactly uncommon. He said the most common thing he hears about screen cracks is when people have the tablet sitting in extreme hot/cold and reverse the temperature quicker than they realize. Meaning if they leave the tablet in their car overnight and it's cold, bring it inside and use it while sitting against the fireplace, then they may face the issue. I stressed two or three times that I had no idea how this happened and that I applied no pressure to the tablet to cause this. He said if ASUS finds that it's customer caused, you'll have the option to pay for the repair and have it sent back. Otherwise, you'll get it repaired and sent back without question.
I know with him being on the phone and not having seen this issue personally it's hard for me to assure him that this is either a fluke thing or a design flaw, but he didn't really seem too concerned (or aware) of what issues I brought up that I've heard about from the Nexus 7. I mentioned that some users reported that their screw seemed to be too long, causing an unevenness and therefore a perfect storm often resulting in a cracked screen. I also brought up other various screen separation issues, but he seemed to be unaware of them. Granted, he's just the front end phone support rep, so maybe he doesn't know as much as the techs do who actually work on the devices.
That being said, I'm not sure that I can get a guaranteed feeling before sending it in that this will be covered under warranty. All I can really do is wait to hear back from them and if they come back and say it was caused by customer negligence, to be aware of the facts in regard to what screen issues are out there to make for a compelling counter-claim. I'm doubtful it'll matter, though. It's not like it's an internal issue where the CPU seized up, something beyond customer control. Hopefully this won't be a headache...
In other news, I didn't use my tablet since the screen is of course cracked, but I just realized the entire touch interface is not working either.

I had the tablet on the kitchen counter, along with my keys, phone, and laptop bag... put the phone in one pocket, tablet in another, walked outside, took tablet out of my pocket, and bam - I saw it. So it's a matter of about 9 steps I took to my car. No stairs, no epic falls on my rear end, nothing like that. It's because of that (coupled with the fact it happened on the left side) that I'm wondering if it is some more food for thought in regard to it being a design flaw.

Screen lift would explain it. Check your tablet more thoroughly using the following guide, and take a photo if possible.

If your lift is significant enough to be discovered by this visual test then it will not be difficult to prove.

Well, I somewhat tried to do that over the phone just now. I didn't have my serial number handy but I did everything I could aside from giving them the serial number, so I need to call back later when I can get the box and give them the rest of the info. As I talked with the rep, I explained to him I've done a great deal of reading about the Nexus 7, and I stressed that the left-side screen issues don't seem to be exactly uncommon. He said the most common thing he hears about screen cracks is when people have the tablet sitting in extreme hot/cold and reverse the temperature quicker than they realize. Meaning if they leave the tablet in their car overnight and it's cold, bring it inside and use it while sitting against the fireplace, then they may face the issue. I stressed two or three times that I had no idea how this happened and that I applied no pressure to the tablet to cause this. He said if ASUS finds that it's customer caused, you'll have the option to pay for the repair and have it sent back. Otherwise, you'll get it repaired and sent back without question.

If you can provide some evidence that your screen wasn't flush that should improve your chances.
ASUS is not a company that cares. The best you can do is legitimately present your case to a rare CSR who does.
Calling unprepared and baffled isn't going to work. Don't threaten, but you'll need to be assertive and better informed.
I know with him being on the phone and not having seen this issue personally it's hard for me to assure him that this is either a fluke thing or a design flaw, but he didn't really seem too concerned (or aware) of what issues I brought up that I've heard about from the Nexus 7. I mentioned that some users reported that their screw seemed to be too long, causing an unevenness and therefore a perfect storm often resulting in a cracked screen. I also brought up other various screen separation issues, but he seemed to be unaware of them. Granted, he's just the front end phone support rep, so maybe he doesn't know as much as the techs do who actually work on the devices.
That being said, I'm not sure that I can get a guaranteed feeling before sending it in that this will be covered under warranty. All I can really do is wait to hear back from them and if they come back and say it was caused by customer negligence, to be aware of the facts in regard to what screen issues are out there to make for a compelling counter-claim. I'm doubtful it'll matter, though. It's not like it's an internal issue where the CPU seized up, something beyond customer control. Hopefully this won't be a headache...

The screw theory and other warranty friendly experiments have been pretty much discredited.
Here is the current working theory for why the left side is able to lift up, summarized by yours truly because it's easier to find my own posts, but trust me that this has been corroborated by several teardowns.

You need to take a better picture, preferably without the trippy reflection, but the edge of your screen is definitely higher than the bezel.

This photo proves that the left side of your screen is higher than the bezel, and if you explain that your screen was lifting up before it cracked -- which it almost certainly was, even if you failed to notice it before -- then you have as good a chance of ASUS honoring your warranty as anyone.
I suggest that you correspond with ASUS and try to get them to acknowledge that this doesn't appear to be your fault before sending it in. You would need to get their assessment of the photo to do this, probably via email.

If ASUS tries to screw you, try explaining what happened to Google Support. Although you didn't buy your device from the Play store, Google may take an interest in your case if ASUS fails to honor its warranty by accusing you of causing a well known manufacturing flaw.
You did buy this from somewhere other than the Play store, correct?
I'm just making sure you understand that Google handles Play store warranties. You wouldn't need to deal with ASUS at all if you ordered it there.
Thanks for your response. Yes, I bought it from Wal-Mart. Right now I'm almost wishing that I bought it from the Play store as Google sounds like they offer significantly better support than ASUS.
I know I need to take a better picture as well, it's just what I had at the time, so I at least wanted to give you guys some degree of a visual.
I did end up getting through to ASUS a 2nd time (had to call back because I didn't have my SN handy). The call ultimately got disconnected. No idea what happened... I heard him, he didn't hear me. I did explain in the conversation that I am well aware of what issues exist and I want this thing repaired. It's a C60 model, which sounds like the first gen with the questionable issues at hand. He did however say, well the one curve ball is, the techs are going to ask a very valuable question - was the device sent out with a cracked screen?
I pretty much almost went off the deep end there. I said, do me a favor, and take down these notes. There is a design flaw. Period. Google acknowledged it. ASUS should too. My device fell under this category. This issue will be addressed and repaired by ASUS.
At this point he sounded to be more "on the same page" with me, so we went to go through the RMA process, but then the call got wacky. I have to admit, I am exceptionally concerned about the comment he made. How on earth can they base cracked screen repairs on a premise like that.
At any rate, we'll try calling back again. Hopefully there won't be a headache, but I'm not convinced it'll exactly be easy. The tablet otherwise is in absolute perfect shape, so there's definitely no sign of a drop, etc. Who knows, maybe ASUS will surprise me?
EDIT - also, their on hold "did you know?" messages are enraging me. "Did you know that if you have a single bright or dead pixel on your LCD screen, ASUS will replace the entire thing for free?"

Well, I'm sending the gizmo back today. I'm questioning how I should handle it. ASUS really has me on edge since their warranty support seems extremely sub par based on what some users said already about repairs. Also, based on the fact the one rep I spoke to said it's unlikely they'll fix it without charging me sent me through the roof, as he said there's no design flaws - despite the fact Google has even said that... maybe include a picture and a short note in the box:
"Here's a picture depicting the screen lift that had existed prior to the crack forming, which is directly in line with the design flaw that plagued a few of the first generation devices that Google has confirmed. Hope this helps."
I don't want to come off as if I want to pick a fight, but I'm just on edge due to what the rep told me. On the flip side, I could always wait until they call me saying they'll charge me, then go from there. Meh.

My first one had dead pixels and was scuffed already from just being in the box. My second one wouldn't charge and was scuffed in the box. I've got my third one but it's scuffed in the box, though so far nothing else wrong with it. However each one has had a problem where the speaker covers don't sit flush, like... I swear they're glued on because you can push them in, should be screwed in tbh. What I've noticed as well is the metal has been poorly cut, it's not level, it has little marks in it and especially around the 3.5mm jack and USB port, the metal is rather jaggy and part of the plastic is flaking away too.
I'm interested in a second one, just badly made phones, I swear HTC have downgrading their quality inspection to get these phones out like those horrible Nexus 4 phones. I'm just gonna get a refund and buy that ugly boring GS4, it's basically the same phone only Samsung Phones I've had in the past have been properly made.
I wanted to like this phone, I'm bored of the Galaxy design, however... the phone quality just sucks.

my second one isnt 100% perfect, but for me even a 100% perfect galaxy s4 wouldnt be close to tempting me away from a 99% perfect One.

i think this phone build quality is really great if i'm honest, the Samsungs plastic feel/build quality is a lot worse, perhaps you were just unlucky in the handsets you received out of the box
We have more than few threads discussing imperfections and issues on early batch
HTC subtly admitted it when they delayed the entire launch and specifically mentioned camera and casing as the reason, yes they called it short of supplies but it actually meant they discovered low yields
Anyway all you can do is either wait for the April batches and exchange or start now until u get a perfect one
What is for sure however what you have now is not a proper representation for this device final build quality

We had the same drama during the One X, defects cleared within 2 months, or took me 2 exchanges, my final one was manufactured in April

The camera I didn't think would be this bad quality, it's like super grainy to the point where if you zoom in slightly, there is no quality what do ever.
The only thing I like is the speakers on the front, though the headphone quality sucks? It's nowhere near as good as my 920 was. The screen is too small also for a 1080 display... I don't see anything super exciting about it.
Just not impressed and the imperfections disappoint me.
Edit: Also why does the phone only charge when it is off?

Plastic back slowly getting looser

So I've owned the tablet for over a week now. I like it. However the plastic backing around the microSD slot has slowly become loose and now holding the device feels like cheap plastic. I don't access the port at all, save the one time i put the sd card in.
Anyone else noticing this build issue?
I'd exchange it if it really bothers you. Mine is snug.

You're probably right. When I bought it, bestbuy had no covers. Now I guess more are getting released. did you get the official one or another? I do like the feature of the samsung one that will wakup the device when opening.

I got the official one. While it may not be worth $50 I like it well enough and it protects from the "everyday". I've never dropped a tablet so I'm not worried about drops.

Most of my local Best Buys had the Samsung cover (white), and a black Belkin one on release date. You can check on their website what is in stock at your local stores. I'm sure more are on the way, too.

The Samsung cover, does it stay closed on the screen just by weight, or do the magnets actually keep it closed?

I have mine over a week now, and haven't felt it loose. You should trade it mate. I like the bezel of the tab but the plastic is really annoying. There are quite a few cases out there though...

I got mine a few days ago and I must say I quite like it! The only build issue I have is a somewhat remarkable amount of light bleed along the bottom but it doesn't bother me enough to post a pic of it. Best buy only had one case that didn't look very good so I'm still sporting the protective back covering till more cases are in stock. I have high hopes for this!
I am on my 3rd Note trade in. It finally is not loose next to the sdcard. I told them I expect near Perfection if I Pay 400 for an 8 inch tablet!

It really should be of better build quality for $400. Or it should be at least $100 cheaper. I have the 10.1 and it feels OK, not terribly cheap but not of high quality. I will be putting it up on eBay and going to the 8.0 regardless, due to it being a more pragmatic size for my day to day use. I’m just waiting on the black version.
I had this problem as well. I replaced it at best buy and haven't had a problem with the new one.

Sure the build quality could be better but I haven't had a single issue with mine since I bought it on release day. From the reports here it seems like maybe some of them are not as solid as others.

Obviously they are not "all the same" since some owners are reporting here that there are no issues with theirs. I think most people are going to use some type of case with this, so IMO it's not too much of an issue. Of course I would like to see better build quality, but I don't think it's that bad. I agree that the plastic back is too shiny/greasy/slippery/nasty, but then again most people are going to put it in a case.
You can get a good sense of the build quality by checking out the display units at Best Buy (if you live in the U.S.). These things are handled by tons of people and kids each day who treat them with little respect because they don't have any personal investment in them. You can always tell which products on display have subpar build quality.
And Really? It was too thick for you? How much thinner do you want it? There won't be any room for the battery if it's thinner, or for the S-Pen silo/dock. I'd rather have a bit longer battery life and a secure place to store my S-pen rather than a thinner tablet. The weight, thickness, and balance in the hand are the best I have experienced in this general size.

Oooooooo magnets Are bad man. Not so much for regular phones but for phones with stylus and digitizer it will over time cause dead area s on your screen. Don't believe me ?
Head over to the note 2 forums and check out all the problems with cases involving magnet clasps. If got so bad the companies offered to replace your magnet sealing case with one with a simple button in stead. I had one and as soon as I put it on I started having problems with the area around that magnet.
Just stay away from magnetic cases period. Just trust me. Or mess up big time. Once that part of the screen gets borked its borked
That pic is the replacement one with the button they sent me. Also watch out for those magnetic kickstand cases. Big no no too those utilize neodymium!

These things are handled by tons of people and kids each day who treat them with little respect because they don't have any personal investment in them. You can always tell which products on display have subpar build quality.
And Really? It was too thick for you? How much thinner do you want it? There won't be any room for the battery if it's thinner, or for the S-Pen silo/dock. I'd rather have a bit longer battery life and a secure place to store my S-pen rather than a thinner tablet. The weight, thickness, and balance in the hand are the best I have experienced in this general size.

Amen thin ness had gone to far. I don't want any thiner devices. Just keep them how they are and make better thinner batteries cpus whatever. Battery tech needs a big overhaul that's our biggest weakness

WARNING! Read before considering a Moto G

I've had a pretty bad experience with my Moto G, so thought I'd leave a friendly warning for anyone on the fence about this phone, or even for those who already own one. I ordered one of these from Tesco about a month ago for £129. After 2 weeks of taking perfectly good care of it as I do with all my devices, I had the unfortunate situation occur of it falling, less than 2 feet I might add, from my bed onto the wooden floor. My first thoughts were, damn I should be more careful, but was incredibly shocked to find when picking it up that the screen was completely smashed.
Having owned many smart phones over the years, they have all at one time or another taken a fall far greater than this, yet this is the first time I've ever had a screen smash on me. Still in shock at how it could break so easily I did some research online, got some contact information for Motorola, who replied giving me a number for the repair center. I phoned them and was given a quote of £59. Feeling annoyed at the price, I still decided to send it off, thinking that despite how easily it had broken, it had still fallen and Motorola had only my word that it was less than 2 feet.
A few days later I received the quote through the post, for £71, with a £15 charge if I decided I didn't want to go through with it and wanted the phone back, otherwise they destroy it. This almost felt like holding my phone ransom. Still, none of this is what I'm here to warn you about, the biggest problem I had with this situation, and the reason I'll never purchase a Motorola phone again, is the responses I got when contacting Motorola again. Being unhappy about being charged more than I was originally quoted on the phone plus a ransom fee if i wanted the phone back un-repaired, I e-mail Motorola again to complain, firstly about the cost, secondly about the structural weakness of the phone, that something was clearly wrong for it to smash so easily.
They responded with a very frank reply saying the Moto G is not shock or knock proof and was never advertised as being so, they also claimed the repair price is standard and correct, but didn't bother explaining why I was lied to on the phone. I then replied explaining that I knew full well it wasn't advertised as shock/knock/bullet proof, but that there are basic levels of durability that you expect when buying something, they are not advertised because they are common sense and taken for granted, and the Moto G didn't come close to meeting them, whether I had a dodgy unit or it's the whole range. They replied saying the Moto G is a "budget device", and that it's "not capable of withstanding any knocks whatsoever".
I made it very clear in my messages about how easily the screen shattered, and they are saying they are ok with that, it's expected, and basically saying you get what you pay for, so be warned, you might think you're getting a bargain, as I did, but as Motorola were keen to point out, if you pay a budget price for a phone, expect it to fall apart at the slightest knock.
Your mileage may vary I have dropped my lady moto g a few times so has she our only issue with the phone is our network and at times the radios itself.

My problem isn't necessarily that the phone broke, although obviously that is a problem, the issue is with Motorola itself, fully understanding how easily the screen cracked, treating the situation though it's expected to break, and then using the price to justify how incredibly fragile the build quality was.
I have no problem posting their e-mails here if anyone want to see them in full to see how frank they are about the lack of quality of the Moto G because it's "budget" I was a little shocked by them, so told them if this really is their attitude the public deserves to know, and they welcomed me to share "my opinion" with people, so I'm sure they'd welcome we posting their responses here if anyone is interested.

Again mileage may vary depending on what it may be, something their fault covered by warranty something your fault its just that. I get they lied to you that was wrong to do followed by not telling you why they lied it could be you got someone new or someone covering their rear ends

1) Sometimes it is not the height, but the angle of you dropped the phone. I also had a Nexus One shattering its screen from a minor fall, but my other HTC, LG and Motorola phones survive drops that are much taller. Also Moto G has the latest Gorilla Glass 3; I honestly doubt if it had been any other phone it would fare any better. And if you have a shatter iphone screen, it cost a lot more than 70 quid to fix it.
2) Welcome to real life kid. If I drive a car with problems into a repair shop, I will be charged even without any fixes being performed. It is called labour, shipping and handling, and whatever. Motorola is not under any obligation to mail your phone back for free. Motorola employees who opened your package, logged the item, performed a visual inspection are not volunteers.
3) You are absolutely right to be ticked off when you were quoted £59 and then £71. I would be. You absolutely have the right not to buy any future products. It is called poor customer services on their part.
These are separate issues. But for its price, Moto G has no comparison in terms of build quality.
I would be ticked off, but most servicing costs by the half hour. The design has to take into account some misuse, but it's a grey area and hard to dispute whether the industrial designers made a poor design judgement or your actions were outside the specifications it was designed for. You could always take it to a consumer ombudsman.
Would a screen protector have help in this situation (envisages dropping phone)?

I'm thinking that it's a must have...
I saw in youtube drop test for MOTO G and yes it broke, the screen was shattered. This happens to every phone, high end phone's screen can be broken as well when you drop it, we need to be careful and protect our phone.
Moto G feels like a sturdy, well built devce. I haven't dropped mine yet. I guess it is the angle at which you dropped the phone which caused the screen to crack or the phone itself was faulty. I still feel it is better built compared to other plasticky samsung phones.
£59 is the ex-VAT price. 20% VAT takes it up to £71. A standard sneaky trick usually carried out by garages on the unsuspecting and totally illegal. Get in contact with trading standards.
In future, whenever getting a quote online or on the phone, check that VAT is included and always take down the name of the person you have been talking with.

I second that, I've lost count of the amount of times I've been happy with customer service to find they told me wrong advice and I couldn't prove who I had spoken to, first thing I do now, write their name + time of call ect.
Also, with my old iPhone 4S I dropped it over 20 times mostly over 3 or 4 foot and only scuffed slightly in the edges, then I dropped it from roughly 2 foot and it completely shattered to bits.
It really is about the angle you drop it at BUT... I took it into the apple shop and they swapped out no questions asked to my surprise, I may have been a lucky one but I was sold on apples customer service then (pity they make such terrible restrictions on there phones, Android FTW).
So yeah, bad on customer service for Motorola, have you searched weather you could fix it your self for cheaper? Screens are usually cheap online and cheap torx set. Failing that, unfortunately recycle online and buy a new one + case?

I've thrown my phone, drop it, and purposely to see how it will do and not one scratch on screen and little scratches on the side. Guess I just gotten lucky

Think you must have been unlucky and it has fallen at just the wrong angle,havant dropped mine but their are a few youtube vids around where it has survived a reasonable fall.
build quality seems decent for a budget unit.
one of the problems of buying a cheap phone is the cost of repair, its usually not worth doing as its almost the price of just replacing with a new phone.
If your unhappy by the product and the way your issue was dealt with then your quite right to keep away from moto products in the future..

Wow, you must have lots of spare money.
The only problem I've come across so far is that the play store hardly ever works. :/
Falls from greater heights are better because the phone has more time to rotate and land, hopefully, horizontally. Dropping it from a short distance to the ground increases the chance of it falling diagonally.

Ottorbox provides good protection but adds too much bulk to the phone. I have an amzer tpu case on my moto g.

No provider will EVER replace a phone with a cracked screen. As you say you dropped it...get over it.
