I just got one these asus tablets and I'm getting ready to rooting the tablet. I'm reading on how to root it and I want to know a really good Rom to put on it after I get it rooted.
I also wanted to know when I root the tablet will it add CMW or will I have to flash it to.
One last thing can I unlock it to use a different sim card. Thanks for reading this.

Unlock it, flash twrp recovery, CleanRom is excellent stock based rom, black bean is an excellent cm based rom. All of the roms on here are great, the two I mentioned were just my personal preference

You have to unlock and use custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) to flash a custom rom. I suggest twrp over cwm. Many, many complaints against cwm on this device.
I believe sim card unlock code has to come from the cell provider.
I agree. TWRP them clean rom.

+1 for TWRP and CleanROM.
I originally flashed CWM but had issues right from the beginning. Flashed TWRP and it's been smooth sailing ever since. As for ROMs, there are quite a few good 1's in this section. I decided to give CleanROM a try and I'm very glad that I did. The stock based ROM is outstanding! If you are thinking about getting a dock in the future, I recommend it. The keyboard really comes in handy and the extra battery life, USB, and full size sd card slot are a HUGE plus.
I would like to give you a word of caution. Please READ everything VERY carefully before you attempt to flash a recovery and ROM. The TF300 is a great tablet but is very easy to brick if you are not paying attention to what you're doing. Quite a few people in here have very expensive paperweights do to the fact that they didn't pay attention to what they were doing.
Read, ask questions, and then read some more and you'll be just fine. Good luck and welcome to the TF300 section!
I dont see how you guys are running TWRP so smooth, I have issues with TWRP, I enjoy CWM, the only downside is having to use the physical buttons, but that's not too much of a bother.

I couldn't get CWM to work at all on my TF300. I couldn't even get secure root access with it, and I've flashed dozens of ROMS and recoveries on multiple devices a variety of ways. Once I flashed TWRP via fastboot, rooting was easy and the device runs well even on the stock ROM.
If I hadn't already installed all my apps and data, I might try CleanROM. Scrosler always did nice ROMs for the Rezound and other devices. I've also run Cyanogen on my Rezound, but wanted to see how the native Asus ROM worked for a while before moving on.
I'm using Paranoid Android on mine, with TWRP. You do need a custom recovery though, the stock one won't really cut it for this type of thing. My own preference is TWRP, but it's really up to you.

When I did cwm it wouldn't make backups so I tried twrp and it's been great.

I don't have anything against CWM. As a matter of fact, I'm running CWM touch on my phone and love it. It's just that CWM doesn't work well on the TF300. At least it didn't for me. From what I've read, many other users had the same issues I did.
Also, as far as I know TWRP is the only recovery that will work with the newest 4.2 update.
I use CWM for testing and REODEXing. It runs significantly slower than TWRP although the latest version has made some improvements. I will still call it laggy compared to TWRP though.
Paranoid Android is really good so far... I love pie and full screen.
I forgot to add ...also running perf kernel 0.3 and it is awesome !!

Can anyone recommend a basic CM based ROM that has the Google Apps installed already?
Thanks
What do you mean by Simple CM based ROM? Why not just use CM?
Also it'll be tough to find a rom with gapps included as they are not a part of AOSP, and are proprietary apps so you're technically not allowed to include them in a rom. Whats wrong with flashing a seperate gapps package?

Ah OK. I guess things have moved on since I was last flashing on my HTC Sensation... all the ROMs I used back then had GApps baked in.

no gapps in any nexus roms except stock based. yes, any kind of nexus. in other devices there could be, but nexus devices dont need any hacking, and developers generally follow the rules. where hacking is needed to get roms running, most developers dont follow rules, hense hacking.

Of course. Rooting a nexus is not some sort of hack fest.
Its a simple process that makes sense, and is quite easy to understand. You just unlock the bootloader (fastboot oem unlock), flash a custom recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img), and from there you can basically do whatever you want. Flash a custom rom (that is pre rooted), or simply flash a supersu binary zip that will root your stock rom.
Its a nice clean process. No using bootleg third party crap or anything like that...all official Google stuff like fastboot and adb.

rooting any nexus device in a nutshell..
1. via fastboot.. fastboot oem devices(a code that google enabled to unlock the bootloader).
2. fastboot flash a custom recovery.
3. flash either the su binaries or any custom rom via your new custom recovery.
4. reboot and profit.
yes, its that easy. and these directions work on any nexus device. no firmware arms races going on.

Guys, my phone just told me there's another upgrade for the lg g2 D803 variant....Anybody seen this yet?
I'm wondering what the upgrade is, seeing it's 1.5 gb.
It's gonna take me to D803B20G. Not sure if the current rooting and autorec recovery method will work on this new firmware, sceptical about installing it......

1. wrong place to post this.
2. general rule of thumb - if you like having root and recovery, NEVER take an OTA from the manufacturer EVER, until it's confirmed that it doens't block root / recovery /bootloader exploits (like the 4.4 ot'as blocked loki)

Q&A if you're asking a question about it, General if you wanted to let people know about it..
yes probably in q&a or general maybe, like stated above please dont install on your phone if youre rooted with a non stock recovery otherwise you will mess up your phone big time! really not sure if its possible but if you can, switch off firmware updates as they are not compatible with the custom recoveries and whichever rom you are using will update soon enough anyway if your on stock rom the same applies if you have a custom recovery

I have stock Rom rooted and twrp recovery that's all.
Avoid the update.
However it has the knock knock code addon. Or, as far as I've heard, that's the only new update LG had planned for the LG G2.
Do not install it. If you REALLY want to try it, make a backup, store it on your PC, OTA. If you lose root, you can revert to stock, get a recovery, put your backup back on your phone and restore.....but that's honestly a lot of work just to possibly get the knock knock code. (I know turning on is knock on, but for the "code" you knock more than once minimum, so I call it knock knock).
You can also force supersu to keep root, but last time I tried that for an OTA I got stuck in a bootloop.
TL;DR: Might be knock on/knock knock code. Not sure what else. You can backup and try to OTA, but no one can be certain what will happen. Expect to lose root. You can force SuperSu to keep root, but you may bootloop.
I'd just wait for more info.

twrp recovery is a custom recovery, so never update.
I'm pretty sure there is an app in /system that you can freeze to stop push updates. Sadly, that is the only info I have. It may have been carrier specific and I haven't been on stock since the first week I had the phone. Haha.
Guys I already know all what you just said......I've done this loads of times. Just wondering if I can uninstall custom recovery without re-installing stock firmware?
I know I can take my chance and try the OTA but not without recovery gone first.
It's a lot of work to just flash stock firmware, install update and if there's no big change, flash stock again.....
Thats why i was wondering if the only option is flash stock to get rid of recovery

I think its possible, (but it should be really hard to do so) but the easiest way is to flash a .kdz file And you should not take the chance to update when you have recovery, it just isn't worth it. Anyways I would just have sticked with a custom rom which gets updated regulary..or flashed a kdz and get back to stock.
Btw can the good judger @Judge Joseph Dredd move the thread to q and a section? I think that it is even more help to get there
OP Moved out of the Development Threads, since this does not belong there....Please read the Forum Rules on posting.

Check to see if there's custom recovery installed. You should flash a factory image and wipe it clean to be 100% sure it'll take an OTA.

Yes he said he had clockwork on it but I prefer twrp which I'll probably flash..
That's if I decide to just throw a sick based rom on it instead.
Can you recommend a good stock based rom that would continue to be updated?

Hmm... Well, I dunno if Team Android makes any more ROMs but those are as close to stock as you can get. Perhaps going simple CyanogenMod or Carbon would be great alternatives if you cannot flash to stock (although there may not be anymore OTAs it's super stable). I don't think the little one will care too much about customizing the UI.

True. I just want something stable so any apps or movie players (MXplayer) run without an issue.
Always seems like cm had so many bugs, even the so called "stable or snapshots".
I saw that SlimKat had a few stable builds. I love that on my 2013 N7 and my G2. Super stable

That I'm not sure of. If the /system partition was changed at all, the md5 would come out invalid and it would send you into a bootloop. You'd also need stock recovery but you can flash an OTA through custom recovery as a .zip. I seriously recommend flashing a stock image if you expect to take an OTA because you really don't know what the original owner had done...

What is cyanogenmod? Do I need it?
Thanks for everyone who helps out!
Download rom manager from play store and use it to flash a custom recovery.. It should be simple
After that you can flash cyanogenmod which is a ROM that changes your phones interface to almost stock android with some added features

As far as I know the ATT S5 has a locked boot loader and hence cannot use custom recoveries or ROMs. For now you are stuck with the ROM you have. You are able to modify your ROM now though.

Two things you should consider..
First of all, if you install a custom kernel/recovery, it will void your warranty (this is called as tripping the KNOX flag). Currently, this is something that you cannot fix by yourself and if your phone breaks Samsung may or may not fix it. But that doesn't actually matter since your phone is on ATT and that one is bootloader locked anyway (which means that currently you cannot flash that recovery anyway).
Second thing is that currently CM11 is pretty broken and some features like GPS and Camera aren't working. It will take some time before people manage to iron out all the bugs and even then it might not be perfect.
My advice is that you should first try to get familiar with the phone and then start thinking about modifying it since you aren't used to Android phones. While rooting might give you some functionality you normally wouldn't have, it's not really something that you'll absolutely need. Even out of the box Android is still way more capable and customizable than iOS and most of that stuff doesn't need rooting.
