Another upgrade - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, my phone just told me there's another upgrade for the lg g2 D803 variant....Anybody seen this yet?
I'm wondering what the upgrade is, seeing it's 1.5 gb.
It's gonna take me to D803B20G. Not sure if the current rooting and autorec recovery method will work on this new firmware, sceptical about installing it......

1. wrong place to post this.
2. general rule of thumb - if you like having root and recovery, NEVER take an OTA from the manufacturer EVER, until it's confirmed that it doens't block root / recovery /bootloader exploits (like the 4.4 ot'as blocked loki)

Q&A if you're asking a question about it, General if you wanted to let people know about it..

yes probably in q&a or general maybe, like stated above please dont install on your phone if youre rooted with a non stock recovery otherwise you will mess up your phone big time! really not sure if its possible but if you can, switch off firmware updates as they are not compatible with the custom recoveries and whichever rom you are using will update soon enough anyway if your on stock rom the same applies if you have a custom recovery

I have stock Rom rooted and twrp recovery that's all.

Avoid the update.
However it has the knock knock code addon. Or, as far as I've heard, that's the only new update LG had planned for the LG G2.
Do not install it. If you REALLY want to try it, make a backup, store it on your PC, OTA. If you lose root, you can revert to stock, get a recovery, put your backup back on your phone and restore.....but that's honestly a lot of work just to possibly get the knock knock code. (I know turning on is knock on, but for the "code" you knock more than once minimum, so I call it knock knock).
You can also force supersu to keep root, but last time I tried that for an OTA I got stuck in a bootloop.
TL;DR: Might be knock on/knock knock code. Not sure what else. You can backup and try to OTA, but no one can be certain what will happen. Expect to lose root. You can force SuperSu to keep root, but you may bootloop.
I'd just wait for more info.

twrp recovery is a custom recovery, so never update.

I'm pretty sure there is an app in /system that you can freeze to stop push updates. Sadly, that is the only info I have. It may have been carrier specific and I haven't been on stock since the first week I had the phone. Haha.

Guys I already know all what you just said......I've done this loads of times. Just wondering if I can uninstall custom recovery without re-installing stock firmware?
I know I can take my chance and try the OTA but not without recovery gone first.
It's a lot of work to just flash stock firmware, install update and if there's no big change, flash stock again.....
Thats why i was wondering if the only option is flash stock to get rid of recovery

Twrp is not a Rom it's a recovery. Hence the "recovery"

I think its possible, (but it should be really hard to do so) but the easiest way is to flash a .kdz file And you should not take the chance to update when you have recovery, it just isn't worth it. Anyways I would just have sticked with a custom rom which gets updated regulary..or flashed a kdz and get back to stock.
Btw can the good judger @Judge Joseph Dredd move the thread to q and a section? I think that it is even more help to get there

OP Moved out of the Development Threads, since this does not belong there....Please read the Forum Rules on posting.

NEW OTA UPDATE- MF9.. Questions thread.

Who knew a MONDAY would be such an awesome day! New OTA Update MF9 as 1st reported HERE by @jonathanhtc . Any questions can go here guys....
I'll start off with a question I have: Does this mean that all of our mods will have to be re-done to be able to be flashed on the new update? ie: Hotspot mod, 4 in 1 reboot mod, etc. all have to be re-done to be able to work on the new software update?!
Question that's on everyones mind is:
Are the bootloaders locked? That "Secure boot status: Samsung" thing was not there before if I remember correctly.

That's why I'm definitely waiting till the devs take a look at it before I download it. It definitely wasn't there with MDC and MDL.

Yes same here. BUT some new things that were reported are: Transparent notification bar with any wallpaper, new smart pause toggle, smoother UI (less lag), move apps to SD card, and KNOX is finally deployed along with Briefing and SPDclient.
First things first. Let's see what partitions got an update.
And someone should put a bug in Agat's ear to patch his kernel with the latest updates.

I wonder if this is basically the same update that the international version got. Hopefully it is, and it fixes the "smearing issue" and also we get the HDR video recording!
I heard people were unable to unlock to use internationally. Some said sprint unlocked but software restrictions remained. Do you think this update might fix that? And im not talking for use withing the U.S. mainly outside (Europe)

Okay, new bootloader, modem, kernel.
2 secondary bootloaders updated as well as rpm and tz.
Interesting that everything backs up to mmcblk0p22 before writing the new one.
Don't recall seeing that in updates for other devices.
New Fingerprint is just swap out MDL with MF9.
As mentioned, Knox is there. Makes me wonder what else was locked down with it.
Updated OCR among many updated binaries.
A lot of the binaries - in particular, vendor blobs - have an update.
I'll need someone to dump the system partition once it's patched for the new vendor files.
Hopefully good news for AOSP builds.
I'm asking to see if the previous sources have any info - but they've already stated not to expect anything.
There are a few questions that need to be figured out:
1) What is in the new bootloader? Are we locked like most of the others?
2) Can we revert bootloaders after flashing - and if so, what does it take to do so?
3) Root on new build?
All of this is going to require a test device, which sadly at the moment I am now without.
All the problems with the N2 left me with a Spare N2 and now without an S4.

bootloader isnt locked, mine is already back to rooted with twrp. that secured by samsung is the new knox stuff, so you can assign your own bootloader chain etc. i dont know all the details nor do i pretend to, but what i do know is its for companies to lock their phones down and not a concern to us

When applying the OTA, were you rooted and flashed with a Custom Recovery (i.e.-CWM or TWRP)? Or were you completely stock?

Judging by his earlier post I'm guessing custom recovery is probably not the best way to flash.
I have the same question BTW I'm rooted, with TWRP recovery, but stock ROM. Have installed a few mods (hotspot, camera shutter sound disabled. Had XPosed framework installed with a couple of mods, but removed those later).
What would be the safe way for me to install the new update? I actually like some of the features that Samsung added, so not looking to switch away from stock ROM for now.
I'm hoping that knowledgeable developers will provide guidance in the next few days

yea i was stock odex from crawj and i hit errors while flashing it twrp, i flashed stock kernel and stock recovery and tried and it still failed so i modded teh zip to forcibly install, i now have no mobile data and my modem isnt updated. so my suggestion, dont follow my lead
im currently flashing MDC stock tar to fully update all the way.
Got the Modem Updated to MF9 using Odin without going back to Stock, uploading the odin package now, and will be updating the thread here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919
Does this include the security update Google announced would be coming to OEMs?
Now if i update to mf9, will it affect custom roms that are built around MDL, or AOSP?

AT&T 4.4 Kitkat Update NB1 Should I install or Not?

Somewhat of a noob here so bare with me...
I have an AT&T S4 here in the US and just downloaded the 4.4 kitkat update but postponed it from installing. I imagine firmware comes with this where i wont be able to install a custom recovery and ROM, is that correct? I have my phone rooted which is running MK2 but have yet to install a recovery and ROM on it. I read on AT&T's website that i can only postpone the update 3 times for 4 hours at a time so i guess i have to figure this out soon. What do you guys think? Install the update OR immediately install a recovery and a new ROM so i am not forced to install this update? Thanks for the help fellas, this site has helped me so much already!

You CAN NOT install CWM or TWRP on your mk2 S4. Only Safestrap 3.71 is a recovery that works. This is common knowledge that is posted throughout the forums on XDA. Search is your friend. But here, let me give you everything you need so you can not brick your phone in the first place. Please read it & thank the op in the threads. Good luck.

Dev Time Estimates?
Does anyone have an estimate on about how long it will take devs to analyze the security of the new bootloader for the possibility of custom ROMS/recoveries? We can always hope that AT&T/Samsung has opened up a new exploit while trying to fix the old one. :silly:

If there is 1 thing I've learned here...don't ask for a time frame. It piss them off, and that's the last thing we want. Just use titanium backup to freeze the AT&T updater and wait. I've waited this long for 4.4 a few more weeks won't kill me.

If you are on MK2, you did not install CWM recovery. You think you did, but you actually booted back into the stock recovery. Which is the best thing that could have happened to you because a lot of people brick their phones and lose recovery completely trying to install a custom recovery (beside Safestrap) on any firmware past MDL. Fortunately, there is a method for most people to recover even if they do Derp their phone. I suggest you take time to read about what is and is not possible with your phone and the different firmwares because the next time you might not be so lucky. Good luck.

Hello,
Yesterday an update came up on my screen, I clicked "Install Now"
The phone restarted into CWM.

Is there anything to be done?
Which phone do you have?
Your phone is rooted, do you have a stock or custom ROM?

No. But it looks like you flashed a borked file. Maybe the CM you installed has a wrong MD5, or you might have flashed a CM that's for a different G2. Either way, you can either push a new ROM zip into your phone to flash, or KDZ back to stock like the guy above me said. Good luck!
And don't worry, your phone is completely fine. But this should be a lesson to always perform a backup before ANY ROM flashing.

What I'd like to know is how did you get CWM in the first place? I've tried for a couple of hours with ROM Manager and the D802 is not supported even though it claims it is. All I get is the red triangle on top of the green android bot and what looks like 2.x CWM. Not sure since I'm new. But it only has about 5 options. No MOUNT, NO ADVANCED, Looks unsuitable for flashing a ROM. I saw this version the very first time I flashed a phone and I soft bricked the phone. It was a Nexus 4. I recovered but I'm not taking any chances and messing with that again. The only way I recovered was using Wugfresh. I need something like Wugfresh for my D802 where I can take those risk. I'm angry because I can't flash anything now. I've got 327 apps to get installed. No one wants to do that manually. It is really inconceivable that this phone which is still arguably the best in the world after 6 months is not supported the way it should be with recovery. Any help in getting CWM working would be greatly appreciated.

That won't work because you can't even get to the menus to install the zip. That the whole problem. You can't really do anything because it basically hangs up with the red triangle. With the number of people having this problem and how great a phone this is you'd figure this problem would not even exist. Here's a screen shot of the problem everybody is having.

iMetalliX, can you still flash a .zip file?, if you can I know this would work for you, just translate the thread and OTG flash the small zip file. This happened to me yesterday, and piece of cake.

I'm new so don't know much. My understanding is you can't flash anything without being in recovery, right? Look at busted25's post. I'm not risking anything that is not concrete. Much as I like to tinker around I accomplish nothing if I end up with a brick. On my Nexus I could risk everything and because I had Wugfresh. No such thing. I'm going to look at he LG software suite and see if can backup the phone enough to restore it should i soft brick or something

Yeah I made the foolish mistake of upgrading to kitkat. I knew it as soon as I hit yes button to upgrade. Too late.

Well that's why you can't get recovery, kit Kat does not have ability for recovery and who knows if it ever will

What?! Are you sure about that? If true that is really foul. What, do they think we are Apple fans or something? If we didn't want recovery we would have bought Apple. I hope that is not true. Why would they do such think knowing you can't flash if you they do that. I'm addicted to custom roms...LOL! I need my fix now!!

Well the exploit we were using to install recovery/Loki was patched in kk so currently if you want recovery it's the same procedure for all devices downgrade to 4.2(first firmware available) root install recovery and depending on your device I can link you a modified kk that uses the aboot from 4.2 plus modified kk kernel to boot to kk while retaining root/recovery

I don't know if I have the skills to pull that off. I could wind up like busted25 and all the others who bricked. I think my best option might be to sell it very cheap quickly and order a new one and never upgrade. I'll take the hit. Phone is less than a week old. One thing I'm not understanding though is I'm seeing only kitkat custom roms for this phone out there. That's why I thought it was ok to upgrade. I didn't see any 4.2.2. Everybody who flashed the custom roms must have been fairly or very skilled. One thing that made me upset is ROM Manager advertised recovery for this phone that was bogus. I even paid for the touch version and got nothing and no email reply

[Q] Help unrooting

I wanted to start a new thread since i havent had any luck finding an answer to my question. Basically i need to know how can i unroot my LG G2 LS980 from Sprint. I just want it back to stock. I have tried a few ways (threads in the forums) but after trying fro a few mins they dont seem to work. then when i go to the end of the thread it says these way no longer works. The last one i tried made me download firmware and use the LG Flash tool and change the megalock.dll but after checking all the settings and launching the tool it just sits at 0% forever. I even tried the turn off and put back on download mode again while not closing the tool and it still does the same.
my phone is still on stock recovery, running android 4.2.2 and software version LS980ZV8
I tried doing the OTA that pops up on my phone every other day but it fails to update halfway thru it. Now i want kitkat and i cant update it. I guess worse case i would like to flash a stock rom with kitkat (stock) and still keep it rooted but my issue is im still stuck on ZV8
Well you can easily unroot from inside supersu but if you have modified any part of the system/xposed/removed bloat you will not be able to update unless you flash back to stock

have the same issue on the bottom it shows B80 rooted
ok found the culprit
forgot to change the com to 41 (windows)
after that it worked fine
Sucks being new
So i need at-least 10 post so I can post in a development forum which kinda sucks. I'm not a total noob i don't need help with flashing anything. I have a legitimate question with a problem im having with a rom. Posting this 10 times in random forums to see if I get intermission to post in Development Forum.

that isn't going to work, you are supposed to make at least 10 helpful post in which you well obviously help someone
Honestly the only help I can give you since I'm using an AT&T version is this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg693AYgoTo
I know it's for AT&T but for AT&T and Sprint you use the same method to flash. You just have to replace the .tot and .dll for your sprint phone, because the ones included are for the AT&T version. Other than that the steps are the same.
PS the Development forums are not for Q&A, it's for development and feedback (Like logcats and bug fixes, etc).

as far as i know, and that can be wrong, if your android is untouched (no root or anything else (like xposes framwork)) you will get the update over the air.
BUT if you don't there are factory images that you can download and flash your phone quite easily
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
or a toolkit to do it automatically
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/how-to-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2010312
i would recommend to do it with the first method. if something goes wrong you will know what is it and you can ask for help. with the toolkit if something goes wrong things are more complicated to find the error.
P.S. if you decide installing the factory images via console (first option), it is highly recommended to read the entire process first and after do the procedure.
My phone is rooted, but i dont have any custom ROMs or framework , will this affect it? Or when I get the update my root will simply be gone?

You'll lose root and the custom recovery with the ota. But if you haven't modified / deleted any system files you should get the ota.

I've searched some threads and some said you don't get ota if you have clockwork mod (I have it) and I really don't know what to do...should I go back to stock? I'm not good with that stuff and afraid I will brick it, any ideas or advice?

You should be ok. If you're really worried about cwm you could flash the stock recovery image in fastboot. But I wouldn't unless the ota fails, which it shouldn't

Thank you one more question, will I still get ota notification ? As in, it might fail but will I still receive like I would normally?

I think you'll see it in the next couple of weeks, not today. The n4 may be even longer

Alright, thank you again for clearing things up!
It's also worth noting that Google pushes update at different times depending on which area you live in, so even if you read on the news that Lollypop is released on the Nexus 4, it may take a while for your phone to receive the OTA.
Personally, I advice you to install TWRP recovery, its safe and easy to install kernels and roms
