[Q] s pen odor - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else have a Strange melted plastic or solder smell on their spen after you remove it? My phone will be just normal temp but have this smell. Note 3 never had that. I have 910c

yes they all have a smell. you can ignore it.

My whole first Note 4 smelled like that but the replacement device doesn't.
I honestly liked that smell though.

I never thought of smelling the pen tip before reading this post. Heh.. What trigger you to smell it on the first place? And yeah, it does smell like melting plastic
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

My whole phone smelled like that when it was new, after a while only the backside (after removing the back cover) smelled like that and now its only the pen.
It smells very chemical and i think this are odors like in a new car, a plastic like smell and if it's that its actually very unhealthy

[Q] Look at my new battery door? :) :) :)

What do you think everyone, Give us a rating from 1 to 5
5 that is pretty damn sweet. How did you do it
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App
i rate it a 5 cuz its AWSOME!!! btw i have a few scratches on the battery door cover. can i polish it too to hide the scratches?
What i done was use sand paper designed for metal Or wet and dry sandpaper would also do just fine. then just use a cloth and apply metal polish to it along with the grain of the metal. took me 30 minutes and the metal polish was under £5. And it got rid of all the scratches that were on it so its a good scratch remover too
It looks good. I did this on my HD2. The only problem is it becomes tarnished, scratched and rather unsightly in no time. I often wondered if some sort of lacquer may have been the answer.
i might think of doing this later. is the door more prone to scratches after the polish?
polish it thenput on a full body protector imo
I should probably consider doing this, it looks pretty sweet, and my battery door is currently covered in scratches, and the whatever the coating that goes over the aluminum is, is starting to peel off.
Although I'm likely going to get an extended battery from Seidio, so I'll probably hold off until then, since I'll be getting a new battery door with it.
Might try something like this too. My G2's battery door has the stock clear coat plastic flaking off. I've started to just peel all of it off so I can do something else to it.
i done it a week ago and its just fine no scratches at all, if im not sure the coating they put on the battery door is what scratches because once i had taken it off the scratches disappeared. its like a mirror if you put enough metal polish on it i notice people admiring themselves in the back of my phone when im texting
Should try clear plastidip to coat the polished door.

Ya thats my biggest complaint. That film is peeling off my back cover also. If i could get that off i would be a happy camper! Not really looking to go to the hardware store to buy **** though. Would rather use some type of household product if that is even possible

I remember when this was done a while back, it's still pretty cool. I scraped off my coating when it started peeling. Just use something like copper or a hard plastic so it doesn't scratch the metal. Not sure, but something like acetone should be able to soften the coating and remove it.
By the way - how in the hell did you remove the 'G2' on there? It's recessed just as much as the 'HTC' and I wouln't grind the plate down that much personally. So how did you do it?
EDIT: Took a second look and saw the 'with htc sense'. No wonder it doesn't say G2 lol.
GREAT i rate u 10 i love it
All together this cost less than £5 and a little elbow grease. I would of made a step by step guide or video if I knew anyone else wanted to do it. Because it's very simple to do.
Looks nice!
I customized mine using the laser cutter at my university. I lasered part of a maze that I generated using some algorithm we had to code as an assignment in the protective film (sadly, the laser isn't strong enough to really engrave the cover). It does have quite a few scratches after six months sadly. Maybe I'll buy a new one on ebay and make something else

Asus support Guess not

So tonight the plastic bezel between the glass and the aluminum bezel broke.
I called asus support and was told since it was cosmetic damage that the repair might have to be paid for by me.
Of course the only way to find out if the repair is covered or not is to mail it in and have them look at it.
I'm honestly a little disappointed, while it might be cosmetic the damage isn't from use, it's from poor materials and/or workmanship.

Sad day
edit: this comes about a week after this happened to my power cord
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/766532/IMG_0004.JPG
that happened when the cord was unplugged from the transformer and slid off the desk. It bounced off the surge protector.
You dropped and broke it and want them to pay for it? You can't be serious.....

Ehhh.. i have a very similar crack to that on mine also and with 2 more splits on each side. but to be honest that was all my fault
dunno how you can blame that to poor manufacturing , only way to do that is to drop it
The tablet has never been dropped. I'm not sure what happened. I was wiping the screen down when it snagged on the corner. I pulled the cloth away and that little bit of plastic bounced on the floor.
It really doesn't bother me but I'm worried junk will get in there.
My charger cable has that exact same piece broken off of it. (or close to it)

Use some silicone to fill in the hole?
My bezel broke there too. Right in the corner. It hasn't been dropped or mistreated, it's been treated like a ****ing princess
wow i just looked at mine and its broke in the same place...damn it y did you have to bring it too my attention

Hot glue is your friend.
Yup. My bezel is broken in the same place, and my charger has exactly the same chip in it.
Not even bothered with Asus support. Not mailing something in at my expense to be told they won't do anything.
Thanks for the info, Im going to be more careful wen cleaning around that area.
My cable is chipped the same way. It happened on it's own, without my input. Fortunately the cable works fine. Build quality is on par with cheap Chinese e-readers (I had the same problems with one). That makes you think do you really need to pay more for sth from Asus.
Son of a Beach... I just looked at mine and its cracked at the same spot.
And I can tell you with 100% certainty mine has never been dropped. I treat my TF like a $600 an hour escort and tuck it in to bed each night with a gentle kiss.
Curious as to why this would happen in the same spot.
I had a few cosmetic problems and they fixed it all for me. But this might be because they damaged a part of my transformer when i sent it in for repair on account of a dead battery.
On a side note, the manufacturing quality is definitely not high. Me and my 2 brothers each bought a transformer and all of them, the back cover is loose on the sides. The power/volume buttons are also not flush.
What the crap? same crack in the USB cord, widespread problem?
Looks like there may be some enviromental stresses involved. Perhaps the bezel seal cracks and breaks from changes in heat (Outside on a cold or hot day, humidity etc). My cable is not cracked yet (touches wood).
I'm going to guess the culprit is people either dropping their tablet and not admitting it, or letting it bounce around inside a bag without adequate padding and protection.

Lost some repect for my GN10.1

I dropped my tabby lightly today (something that Doesn't happen). despite it being in a case, I managed to scratch the corner up pretty nasty and unclip the clips holding the back plate in the corner. Wow.
A few minutes later totally unrelated (I hope), I felt that the center of my screen very warm. I took off the case to check the temperature in the back, behind the case where it cant ventilate and Wow! it's running hot! mostly Under the ffc and close to the left side of the tablet holding it landscape. I wasn't even doing anything heavy.
So yeah. I love this thing but I gotta say. I hate the choice of materials here Samsung, Plastic just isn't right for a 500 $ flagship. I gotta say, I'm pretty amazed with the gps on this thing though. .. I know it wouldn't be possible without the plastic construction. I gotta wonder why the compass is so bad though.
Anyway, thats my rant for the day. enjoy.

What kind of case was it so we can prevent this from happening to anyone else?
Also which part of your tab hit the ground. Though i feel for you and your tab, a lesson can be learned from this on how (if ever) in an event you drop your device, how to drop it "the right way" to avoid damage such as this.

If it were a metal back that's tightly bonded to the frame your post would be about how easily the screen cracks. My OG G-Tab 10.1 got run over by an "excuse the cart" after it fell out of my briefcase at DFW airport. It survived unscathed. You spin the wheel and take your chances.

I wouldn't have another metal one. They don't give for the screen and moreover, just check how poor wifi and gps signals are on tablets that are made of all metal... such as the TF201... or even more famous tablets...
Well how about wood? Jk idk.. maybe thicker plastic, or a metal structure/bezel with plastic for the back. The iPad feels pretty solid though so idk if metal is always bad.
My case is a poetic faux leather case.. I think it had 'slim' in the name.

First week I dropped my n7k from about 5 ft with only a thin elago case and a screen protector of course and it lands face Down on rough gravel and only a tiny Nick on the very outer bezel between screen protector and case . Nice job Sammy . Last week a co worker drops her iPhone 4 like 3 ft on flat asphalt and crack screen . Hahaha get what you pay for I guess . ....

You should know for the asus transformer prime that metal backs are more pretty than functional.

Well from what I understand though I am not an expert on this the plastic material is better then metals on Ipad as it can absorb most of the shock bot none the less because of the weight of the tablet you will damage it no matter how lightly it is dropped but that said I have a micromax tablet which has been droped kicked around by my sisters kids to an extent where the casing has cracked but tablet is still running
I sugguest you look at rubber casing because they have the tendency to absorb shock more then anything else only draw back they do not look fancy

once and forever: Samsung devices are cased in polycarbonate and not plastic !!!!!! And this material is used in aircraft and space engineering, it is light and robust and exceeds cheap aluminum in most parameters !!!!!!
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycarbonate
I do not know how you define plastic, but that sounds like plastic. It is the other way around. We are flying in plastic planes . And I do not think that planes are built out of the same polycarbonates than this tablet. That is far too simplistic.

Sorry, you're wrong. This is a long standing quote that I was kidding the OP about. Also, this is the one forum that I have rarely seen it get personal. Nothing to be concerned about here. :good:
For sure the note 10.1 feels like the cheapest device I have ever got , (in materials and build quality) specially the back blue plastic cover, but if it wasn't made like this it would have been allot heavier and very expensive so get a silicon case or something for it, forget about its build quality and enjoy the real power underhood

[Q] Cleaning Tips for Nexus 4 users

Hey guys,
So I've had the Nexus 4 for around two weeks now and it's too well designed of a device for me to resort to using screen protectors although I will be getting a thin case soon since it is quite slippery. I was just wondering what some of you do in order to maintain the condition of the device. I've simply been using a dry microfiber cloth - usually used on my eyeglasses - and rubbing gently until all the smudges are gone. This keeps it quite clean for 3-4 days but I don't know if that period will shorten with prolonged use. Any and all tips are appreciated, thanks in advance!
I just usually rub it on my shirt. Takes the smudges off in one wipe
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
After I wash/dry my hands I use the edge of my palm, the coating is great so I don't even have to do that that often.
Sounds like a pack of microfiber cloths should do just fine for the future then! Thanks guys, still welcoming other suggestions

american apparel t-shirts work surprisingly well. it makes the phone extra shiny!
well it works just like a microfiber cloth.
any sunglasses pouch works well too!
I use optical wipes on my phones, gets rid of any finger grease and doesn't leave streaks.
I use the cloth that came with the Nillkin case. Works way better than a microfiber one that came with my girls mini laptop.. :/

Not fair
He guys im new and i had a question about keeping my nexus 4 clean. So when i recieved my nexus 4 i had it naked without a screen protector or case, then i decided to buy a full body xtremeguard screen protector, which was 6 dollars. They arrived and i tried putting them on the next day. They were wet installation which i didnt really like. I had to use a bowl of handsoap and water. So I installed them and tried to accelerate the drying process a little by using a blow dryer, but guess what, it really made the beautiful screen look all ugly and disoriented so i took them off and decided to keep it the way. and applied a little more water to the glass to get all the soapy residue off and dried it off a little more. The next day I noticed that when i held it in sunlight I noticed this white stuff inside the crevices in between the glass and the edges of the phone. SO whats bothering me is that i think its dried soap in there and blow drying it only made it worse. But wheat really gets me ticked off is that i wanted to keep my phone perfect and clean but that stuff is still in there and i dont know how to get it out. Its just killing me. Ive tried water, q tips, even scraping it out with printer paper but no luck. Can anyone give me ideas or help plz?? thx. IM sorry if this a very long post
Should have left the XtremeGuard on there, it takes a few days for them to dry properly and until they do, they look like a disaster.
As for the left overs, maybe a fingernail will be able to scrape it out?

Compressed air, but be careful not to blow it to closely.
As far as cleaning the screen itself, I use monster LCD/plasma TV cleaner I got at best buy. Its a little pricy but I've had it for 3 years and works wonders on all my phones, even on screen protectors.
I do not have any advice as far as what to do what the residue in the screen your talking about.
I have a screen protector on the screen and have been thinking about removing it lately. I had a convo with my neighbor who never uses a protector on his phones. He never has gotten a huge scratch on gorilla glass, and to be honest I rarely ever change my protector and prob sacrifice more clear screen using one vs not...

Get yourself a small camera lens puffer (like a rocket). Great for getting dust and lint out of nooks and crannys, but not enough force to damage anything nor any chemical agents (like in canned air).

Use a brush? Like a paintbrush or makeup brushes

Water mark on TOP of N7 screen.

No, not water inside. Don't answer with the rice trick. ON.
Like if you leave a cup on a wood table. A ring of water damage on the screen. Does anyone have any tricks for glass cleaning that can apply here? Home remedies? No matter how many times I clean it or wipe it with screen wipes, etc. nothing works.

Are you sure that this was from water? Was it left outside with a cup on it? This could be damage from the sun where the ring of the cup was at and could have permanently stained the glass. Also how much liquid was in said Cup? Could be the LCD under the glass cracked from the pressure of the cup. As far as cleaning try getting an electronic glass cleaner kit like Zeiss that has cleaning gel and a soft (usually microfiber) cloth. It will only run ya a couple bucks at Walmart or a similar store. I've used this for cleaning all my electronic surfaces and it works well for regular cleaning not sure how it will do on a ring though but it's cheap and worth a shot. Worst thing it can do is not work and you can use it on all your other electronics to clean off normal stuff like oil and smudges from your screens. Best advice I can give without knowing more details about what happened to the device

Mine has this "cup mark" when its dirty. When I clean the screen good...its gone. With a proper screen cloth. I think its from something inside that heats up or something.
