CL is Claro, carrier in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries. Same text string is in my Puerto Rico factory images. Although sold by Claro, it's factory not "retail". Carrier unlocked, no carrier bloatware. In Puerto Rico, it's sold only in Claro stores instead of being available on Motorola-Puerto Rico website like in Mexico.

Really? You bought one that was not unlocked? Just curious how you know.
If so, then my PR TWRP images are very valuable. Already unlocked, no bloatware, rooted. With and without permanent TWRP recovery.

Claropr is my service provider, got mine same day it came out. And a sim locked phone does not become sim unlocked by flashing a sim unlocked firmware. Just like you can flash a hundred firmwares and your device wont become sim locked once its been unlocked.

OK, thanks for clarifying. My last two phones were Nexus phones so I have no experience with SIM locked phones. I guess I assumed if your bootloader was unlocked and you were rooted, all was good. Just never had to think about it.
Before that I had CDMA phones that I knew were proprietary. I rooted one and installed new ROM but never tried to leave that prepaid, proprietary service. Even if I had, it would have to be another CDMA carrier, as there was no sim card slot in those phones.

Yes, people have used it.
You use TWRP to flash the image. It was made with TWRP, it'a a TWRP backup.
You can flash TWRP via ADB so it's only temporary until reboot, not permanent. You then go to the backup in (temporary) TWRP recovery, "restore" the backup. Reboot. TWRP is gone, but you are back to stock.

Somebody posted it in one of the Lollipop soak test threads. I grabbed it in case I ever needed it. Sorry, can't find who it was or I would give them credit.
Excellent, thank you for the link(I also clicked the thanks button). I have a Moto Maxx from PR on the way and I fully intend to root and play with the firmware. I will also try the Brazil Lollipop leaks. My first rule though is always have the original factory firmware to go back to.
I've also posted a few on my site as well. Ones I just downloaded for myself.
I have the 5.0.2 Indian package, 4.4.4 Brazilian package, 4.4.4 PR package and 2 of the LP Soaks for the Brazilian
Moto Maxx = Moto Turbo
FYI.
The Moto Turbo has the same FCC ID as the Moto Maxx. It's the same phone.

Of the bands the Moto Turbo has listed, I've confirmed the Moto Maxx has the same except possibly one 3G band. And I'm willing to bet it has that one too.
I KNOW the Maxx has LTE band 5. I proved it months ago. It was in the FCC tests also, just not listed in Motorola's specs.
I also know the Maxx has HSPA band 1700 also. Got confirmation yesterday, besides my QPST scan.
The only one I wasn't sure about is HSPA band 800.
But it's probably there also in the Moto Maxx.
And someone has already flashed the India Moto Turbo firmware over their Moto Maxx to turn it into a Moto Turbo, if you want to "officially" have all those bands -- instead of just knowing they are there.

You don't get much attention because US Cellular is a MUCH smaller company than Verizon and AT&T.
If it makes you feel better, the Verizon and AT&T version also don't have published root yet
What's the command to back up the system to the internal storage? I wanna root the 10A

EDIT:

Tis is now the [Discussion] US Cellular us991 thread:good:
Getting delivery of US991 tuesday. Curious whether to stay on Lollipop or upgrade to Marshmallow? Anyone get MM update? How is it?
FYI. I wanted to run MM but couldn't get the update. Called US cellular and they said they pulled the 20b update due to a lot of reports of boot loops. No eta on when they will begin to push it out again. Take it for what it's worth.
For Anyone Who Bought an Unlocked US991!
Just a heads up for anyone purchasing an unlocked US991, the firmwares are different than the US Cellular US991's. I bought one the other day from Best Buy (then returned), and it came on 10A with a kernel date of Sep 25, which is far later than the Jun 1 kernel date of 10C for branded US991s. As far as rooting goes, you'll have to manually inject root into your system image, outlined here in step 2. The 10A the unlocked version comes with is not the same as the US Cellular US991 10A firmware. There is no KDZ available for this device/firmware yet, so be very careful about rooting.
The unlocked US991 is fully compatible with US Cellular KDZs. So that leaves the option to flash the branded US991 10C via KDZ, then root using a prerooted system image. I would not recommend doing this because it will brand your phone to US Cellular, and probably will not allow OTAs because of the model mismatch. You will be stuck on 10C until there's a KDZ released for newer firmwares. I flashed my phone to US Cellular's 10C, and I obviously could not go back to my original firmware. I have another one on order, and I'll post a prerooted system image ASAP.

Thank you for the post, this was very helpful in understanding why I couldn't update my firmware from 10A, no matter what I tried. I even thought of ordering a US cellular SIM card at one point, in the hopes of getting my IMEI registered with US cellular to enable OTA updates. Now I'm getting a feeling that would be a futile attempt, as this US991 unlocked model isn't the same as the locked model. (i.e., no OTA update whatsoever with unlocked model)
A question I had was, when you flashed to 10C, I would have assumed that would allow you to get MM update. But I guess it didn't work? My guess was either OTA or LG mobile support tool would have recognized the 10C as the US cellular version, and just pushed through the MM update...

That's very interesting, I thought I was in the same boat. I have a US991 that I got off ebay which I assumed to be the same as the ones at Best Buy or B&H. Mine has the US99110C firmware, so maybe that means it is a US Cellular model? There's actually nothing on the phone that says US Cellular - no branding or bloatware. I've tried getting information from US Cellular and from LG, and the official word from LG is that they don't sell unlocked phones unless they are a Nexus, so that led me to believe that the ones retailers are selling are really US Cellular models (maybe overstock). It's also clear that the people at LG who answer customer questions don't know anything about the unlocked phones being sold.
Assuming that mine is a US Cellular phone, it should receive the update, which it hasn't. That could be due to the previous post that USC has pulled it due to issues, but when I've spoken to them, they didn't know anything about it. Is there a web source for information about the update on USC or a forum? There is a recurring theme with tech support - the people who answer are just there to solve simple user problems, not to troubleshoot real issues.
I've tried getting my phone connected via LG Bridge, but Bridge doesn't see that my phone is connected (it is). When I try the Mobile Support Tool, it sees the phone, but says it's up to date. I'd love to hear from anyone who actually gets one of these phones updated to Marshmallow. I also tried putting a USC sim card in the phone, to no avail.
Does anyone know if it's possible to put the H815 firmware on one of these phones? Those seem to be receiving lots of updates.
Really LG? No support?
I contacted LG US about the issue with US991 not connecting to LG Bridge. Here's the response I got:
Thank you for contacting LG Mobile Communications and for the additional details you have provided.
I have made note of the information with the currently open ticket so that this may also be looked into. I will check on this ticket as well personally and as soon as I get updates, I will send you an email immediately. In other words, we don't care, get lost. This was more than 2 weeks ago.
So the way I see it we have two options in the US: the US991 which they do not provide updates for but (hopefully) has a US warranty or the H815 which they do not warranty but you can get updates for.
Is LG US trying to compete with Comcast for the worst support in the US?

I couldn't even OTA to 10D, which was my original intent of upgrading to 10C. However, the 10A we have is probably at 10D's patch level (build date of Sep 15), so I wouldn't worry about getting updates unless you're itching for Marshmallow. Given the experience I had with Marshmallow on the Moto X Pure I had for a week before getting my G4, I'm totally fine with Lollipop for the time being. In addition to Doze not really being effective (still had major Android OS and oddly Cell Standby drain), I had a lot of backwards compatibility issues because of the new permissions model. I also hate that they took out the option to disable interruptions until the next alarm after the release of MM. Some weird OTA Google thing removed the feature a while after 6.0 came out, and only 6.0.1 has it now.

H815 firmwares would definitely brick your phone, but you can flash USC KDZs with no problem. As far as you being on 10C, what's your kernel build date (shows in the *#*#244773825625#*#* secret menu)? My firmware is 10A, but I'm pretty sure it's at the same patch level as at least 10C, possibly 10D, since the kernel date is Sep 15, and 10C's was Jun 1.

I'm coming from a Nexus 5 which, of course, has all the updates. I had no trouble with MM. I can't say it made a huge positive difference either (my battery still dropped quickly but 2 years old), but for security reasons, I always want updates. I'm very skeptical about this phone getting the monthly updates that Google is pushing out, I'll consider that better next time I buy. Got duped by the stores calling this unlocked, though LG clearly doesn't want to support it themselves referring me to the carrier when I ask. I will keep pestering them to fix Bridge and hopefully provide the USC update.

That's too bad. I would expect LG to make the phones as similar as possible which is easier on the engineering and parts supply. I'm thinking this phone might be identical to the Sprint model, saw some posts about mix ups, not sure if it ever worked. At least on that one they get the radio.
Thanks for that tip about the hidden menu:

Android Marshmallow 6.0 20C for the US Cellular US991 is out now. This is an update from 10D.
You can install 20C on any US991 regardless of current version. 20C is specifically for US Cellular users... not the unlocked US991 users with the unbranded model on 10A. Though it would work on those devices.. the phone would have some things set to US Cellular rather than the unlocked version it is now.
If you don't already have LG Bridge you can grab it here - www.lg.com/us/support/product-help/CT10000025-1438110404543-preinstall-apps

Lucky you!
LG Bridge doesn't recognize my phone at all, and I've heard others say the same thing. We'd have a chance of getting the update if LG's software worked with their phones.
Can you grab the KDZ file from your upgrade? You'd make many people happy!
The US Cellular US991 is totally unlocked. I haven't seen anything on my phone that actually says US Cellular, but it does have the 10c version, which I understand is USC only. It works on all GSM networks, not sure about the CDMA folks who seem to lock out phones.

Newbie alert! Is there a guide on how to create a KDZ file? I'd love to know how to do it.
Thanks
P.S. I still cannot get LG bridge to connect to the phone.
In order to use LG's bootloader unlock tool, you must have model H815, your phone's country code has to be in Europe region.
Regardless of the silliness you may have read elsewhere, the official LG tool is the ONLY way you can bootloader unlock a G4
look at the photo below, see the GBR country code on the label? - this would be a model variant you can unlock! :good:

BAL

CZE
DEU

EUA
FRA
GBR
GRC
HUN
ITA
NEU
NLD
POL
PRT
ROM
SLO
SWS
if you have been able to unlock any other country codes, please let us know here!
(I realize that the SEA code phones were unlockable briefly, but that was just an oversight, LG claims)
also let us know which of the above codes are on the end of your phone's box if you succeeded in using LG's bootloader unlocker - mine was CZE
-- UPDATE: -- word on the street is that LG has started allowing Europe region carrier specific phones to be unlocked, that adds these additional codes as unlockable - woohoo!

very cool! - please lets us know which phones you have successfully bootloader unlocked using LG's unlock tool
Hi, In the post above (with the pic) you say that the GBR variant has an unlockable bootloader but the list of unlockable bootloaders contains GBR...........So, please clarify if the version is unlockable.

I don't really understand your question, the GBR coded phones can be unlocked, that is why they are on the list of the ones that can be unlocked. The statements in my original post still make perfect sense. Reread it, slower.

Not gonna happen - the carriers here in USA all block that, besides, H815 is an International version, there is no USA version of this phone.
If you want an unlocked bootloader, you need one of the country codes listed above.

So the USA G4's with the DHHS code:MC1 are screwed?

Regardless of the silliness you may have read elsewhere, the LG tool is the ONLY way you can unlock a G4
look at the photo below, see the GBR country code on the label? - this would be a model variant you can unlock! :good:
here are the country codes that should work fine with LG's bootloader unlock tool!

sounds like it may not actually be a European model, or perhaps it might be like the guy yesterday who realized after we discussed it that his IMEI on the phone (behind battery and in About Phone - check that both match) did not match his box! - please post a photo of the end of your box and I will see if I see anything amiss

you pretty much have to have the H815 exact model, and one of the codes I listed to unlock it - the only exception is that there are some carrier specific models in Europe who's 3 digit codes begin with the number 6, that *may* be able to be unlocked, I am hoping to European folks will speak up on this.
The time to research which phones variants are bootloader unlockable is BEFORE you buy the phone, but it's not a huge problem, because 99.99 percent of cell phone owners are just normal people and don't care about unlocking the bootloader or specific country codes, so your current G4 still has huge value on ebay or swappa if you have kept it mint, just sell it and start over, now that you know the right model to choose

Sorry for my confusion as I'm somewhat of a noob. I've just ordered a G4 I know it's H15 but not idea what country it will be as I got it online. As I understand it you need to unlock the bootloader to root and install custom roms?
I started looking up the root process for the G4 and it looks a right pain in the hole. (I've rooted an s3 before and it was relatively simple from memory)
Presumably by following the process below I can still root if I happen to end up with a variant not in the OP?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765
yes, root will be no problem, but you will not be able to use TWRP or load custom ROMs without an unlocked bootloaded

Smooth. No issues whatsoever so far. Battery Life has also improved considerably. Getting an average SoT of 6 hours. Got back today after work and it still had 56% battery left with SoT of about 4 hours.
I have earlier used the RR Rom, but I was facing some issues with 3G connectivity on Idea on that Rom so I decided to give the stock OS a chance, pretty neat if you ask me, no connectivity issues. It was worth the wait I guess.
No issues so far...running smoothly. I think the battery life got extended.. Last charging was done yesterday around 2 pm yesterday while updating the phone and still I have 47% remaining. The projected time is tomorrow 9.00. I am expecting for tomorrow morning.. I used to charge every 20 to 22 hrs..and after the update it is extended to 30 hrs..

Uh, no. This is for the Moto Turbo XT1225. What phone do you have?
In the U.S. any OTA Marshmallow release would be the Droid Turbo XT1254 (different radio bands) and the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 (identical in every way to the XT1254, even same FCC ID, so different radio bands from the XT1225). Those have NOT been released yet.
However, it is about the same OTA which has been released for the "international" Moto Maxx XT1225 -- as the Moto Turbo XT1225 shares the same FCC ID. That OTA has been released in Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico that I know of, so far. Maybe even Chile, by now.
Back last year I flashed my Puerto Rico XT1225 and Mexico XT1225 to India Moto Turbo XT1225 as it got Lollipop 5.0.2. first. So, all the XT1225 are totally compatible with each other. BUT you should not flash an OTA from another region over your phone. You should flash the complete image, via ADB like found here (IF you have an XT1225):
FILE FACTORY - QUARK IMAGES

@iiWoodstocK has a TWRP-flashable version of the Brazil Marshmallow image over in the Droid Turbo forum. It uses whatever radio you already have installed. It even works on Droid Turbo (just no VoLTE) as well as all the other Quarks:

this ROM is just factory Marshmallow with a modded build.prop. I didn't include any radio in the .zip, so it uses whatever is currently on the device. Aside from my build.prop tweaks, this ROM is even usable for Brazilian XT1225 users, but the device will say it's a Droid Turbo and contain useless CDMA build.prop lines.

From what I understand that is a Marshmallow problem in general, so yes.
There are ways to mitigate it, like using an xposed app that automatically drops you down to 3G when connected to wi-fi. You are getting data from wi-fi at that point, it doesn't matter how fast your mobile connection is. Others somehow turn off mobile data completely when on wi-fi. I'm not sure how that is done, whether manually or some xposed app that does it automatically.
I recently bought an used unlocked S7 from ebay.com (US).
At the back of the device, the model number displayed is SM-G930P. However in the About Device section, the model number shown as SM-G930T and the latest T-mobile firmware (G930TTMB4APK1) installed.
When I logged in to samsung account for the first time, the phone got automatically registered, I got a message from samsung confirming the model number as SM-G930PZKASPR (Sprint model). How can I check the actual model number of the phone myself without rooting the phone? How would the T-mobile firmware been flashed on a Sprint model?
It was used very briefly in US on ATT and the phone looked not to be blacklisted. And the ebay seller description showed the phone is unlocked for all US networks and overseas.
And I am currently in India and luckily this phone has LTE Band 3 supported on Vodafone India.
I am not sure if I will receive OTA or not. Anyone on the same boat?
If I dont receive OTA, should I flash the next firmware of T-mobile? or Should I flash the G930U t-mobile? or Should I flash the G930U sprint?
Please help me.
I have flashed T-mobile compatible G930U firmware (G930UUEU4API3_G930UOYM4API3_TMB) on my G930P. I did not face any issue while flashing. My phone remains unlocked. Enjoying it at the moment.
Model number shown in About Device is G930U.
But still the puzzle remains, how to check the actual model number of the phone without root?

Probably it is originally factory unlocked by the sprint carrier. When i bought it had tmo firmware installed. Currently i have g930u (tmo compatible) firmware installed. I am using this phone overseas. I am not rooted.

Very unsatisfied with this service. The 1-man operation was incredibly rude and unhelpful. The way he talks is immature and lack of professionalism. No support whatsoever. This guy basically just paid for one of those unlock boxes sold by a unlock team which I will not name. It is around 200$.
I feel a bit inclined to just dispute the payment charge. I have never done that before. This is how unhappy I am with this service.
TLDR I do NOT recommend this service. Please look elsewhere so you do not make the same mistake as I did.

The firmware for all the US carrier variants and the unlocked US variant are interchangeable, which is why it was possible to flash T firmware on a P variant.
As others have mentioned, for the most international support on the US variants and with the least amount of carrier bloat your best course is to flash the unlocked "U" firmware. As for which U "carrier" to flash, I don't think it matters. I would go with T-Mobile if I had to choose.

From a hardware perspective, the device can only handle certain LTE bands. Often, the US carrier versions will block some of those possible bands. I would assume that the unlocked variant has the least amount of blocked bands.

Flashing the U firmware actually unlocks additional LTE bands, and you can put the phone on diag mode and you can enable more LTE bands using CDMA Tool (I have not been able to enable using QPST) without the need to be rooted. I live in Belize and my carrier uses band 17 (primary LTE band) and band 2 for LTE, I have to manually enable band 17 on the the U firmware to get LTE working. For me it has worked fine.
Regarding the correct model your phone is, did you check the back of your device? It should have the model number engraved on the back. mines was originally model number SM-G930VL which is the Tracfone Wireless Variant.

Moto Z Force (Droid) has a LOCKED BOOTLOADER. Can't be rooted. It's a Verizon phone. No dev work possible.
Whereas the Moto Z (unlocked edition) has bootloader unlock on request and there's tons of ROMs and kernels, etc for it. You got the wrong phone, IF you wanted dev stuff... You need a phone where the bootloader can be unlocked and the phone rooted. Some Verizon phones' bootloaders can be unlocked through Sunshine exploits, but not that many. You have to do research here on XDA before you get the phone.
Now some people may have this Droid Moto Z Force phone and LOVE it, but yeah the dev sections are basically empty. No ROMs, no kernels. And there won't be any until the bootloader is unlocked -- IF ever.
The 2015 Droid Turbo 2 (Verizon's Kinzie variant) is in the same condition -- bootloader locked down, no dev work, while the sibling 2015 Moto X Force (unlocked Kinzie) has ROMs, etc. They both share the same XDA forum, so the Droid Turbo 2 owners can only look enviously at the Moto X Force dev work.
Blame Verizon for locking down the bootloader!

...which is a damn shame and craps right on the original intent of Android, back when amateur development was taken seriously and many mods that the folks here and other sites created were incorporated into official Android releases...
Z Force is a fine phone and if rootable would have an explosive Dev community. Really sucks....

I won't like to think so. There are Samsung phones with locked bootloaders. But still get custom roms based off stock. With improvements and tweaks made on the rom. I think it's the popularity that matters. The more people use the device the more likely there is an exploit like the Samsung s7 and edge series. Where kernel exploits were used to obtain root.

Motorola phones are different. You need to unlock the bootloader.
Trust me on this.
With LG G2 and LG G3, you could also root and install custom recovery and ROMs without bootloader unlock .
Motorola phones are different. Luckily, Motorola will unlock your bootloader on request -- unless it's a Verizon phone.

So what? That's been an "option" on everybody's Android phone since Lollipop. Verizon carrier demand to manufacturer overrides that consumer option. They demand their bootloaders remain locked down.
Toggle that switch all you want, it won't do any good. With a Motorola phone you still need a bootloader unlock code. This is from my guide on how to unlock Motorola bootloaders:
Section 1: UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER
Before anything, go to the Motorola website and unlock your bootloader.
Unlocking the is FREE, via the Motorola website.
UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
You release Motorola from any liability, get a code and unlock your bootloader.
If you get an error message at this step that your phone is not eligible, then you have typed in something wrong or you have a Verizon phone. Helps if you Google how to copy and paste from Windows command window. There's a LOT of alphanumeric characters you have to type. First time I tried to unlock my bootloader I mis-typed something. :crying: Copying and pasting from the Windows command window fixed that problem! :good:
You'll get an email with the bootloader unlock code. The email will also have a link back to the instructions. But the code is what's important.
You will receive this fairly instantly. If you don't get it, make sure you checkmarked you agree to all the conditions. Also check your spam folder.

However, IF you go to that website with a Verizon phone, it will say you do not qualify. WHY? Verizon won't let Motorola give customers the unlock code. So, with Verizon Motorola phones you need someone like Sunshine team to find an exploit.
I got codes from Motorola for my phones because they are NOT Verizon branded Motorola phones.
This is why the NON-Verizon Moto Z has lots of development, but none of the Verizon Droid Z phones (Droid Z or Droid Z Force) have any development. Blame Verizon.
Go here and take a look:
Moto Z
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z
Unbranded Moto Z phone, not the Droid branded Z or Z Force. Lots of ROMs, kernels, etc.
You bought a Verizon phone. Yes, it's frustrating when you pay hundreds of dollars for a phone and the carrier or manufacturer still thinks they own your phone. So, I don't give carriers or manufacturers like that my money. I never buy a phone I can't root, install custom ROMs. And with Motorola phones that means you have to unlock the bootloader. So, that means no Verizon Motorola phones UNLESS you know there's an exploit available, like from Sunshine team.
Rumor is the 2017 Moto Z2 Force (successor the Z Force) will NOT be a Verizon exclusive. In which case, I'll wait to see if bootloader codes will be available from for either T-mobile branded phone or even "international". I have the Moto XT1225 which is the unbranded "international" version of the Droid Turbo XT1254, but has all the AT&T LTE bands. But there was also a U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 which was the exact clone of the Droid Turbo XT1254, sold by regional CDMA/LTE carriers in the U.S.A. and it has all the Verizon bands and has FREE bootloader unlock. You could stick in a Verizon sim card and it would run on Verizon just like a non-Verizon Nexus 6.
Before Sunshine found exploits for the Droid Turbo, Verizon users who wanted an unlocked bootloader went and bought the U.S. Moto XT1250 -- same FCC ID, same bands, exact same phone as the Droid Turbo XT1254, but with an easily unlocked bootloader with free code from Motorola. The Moto XT1250 was basically the "dev" version of the Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254.
Moto Z Force unlocked bootloader
Hello XDA experts (IMHO), I am new to this site as I just registered; however, I have read multiple threads and found the vast majority to be knowledgeable and definitely informative. Thank you for that.
I bought an unlocked Moto Z Force off of eBay in March of last year, and until the forced updates I really enjoyed using it. Then came the forced updates that I had no choice in even blocking the download since they have always happened in the background without any notification of the process requesting access or anything close. I really really hate that some hump hidden away in some stupid little cubicle is writing code to essentially hi-jack my phone. And this is coming from a used to be decent company.
Anyways, in the summer I was messing with the phone and kept hitting the boot unlocker button until finally it stayed on. It has been unlocked since, but unfortunately my home computer is dead until I replace the power supply so I haven't hooked up to a computer with the phone.
I did try Kingoroot but that was unsuccessful so I quit messing with it until last month I decided to see what, if any, info was to be had on rooting it. Nothing seems to have changed except when I read that no one appeared to have an unlocked Verizon Moto Z Force with an unlocked bootloader. I then thought that armed with what I was able to do that someone from this site would be able to run with it and push this into the box of done that.
I only probably know enough to screw up my phone but I was looking at using the fastboot and recovery tool areas as possible ins for breaking the wall that stupid a$$ Verizon builds.
Am I on the right track maybe? I'm sure that these areas & ideas have probably been looked at 6 ways from Sunday but just in case I wanted to throw the info in of what I had done & that it might help out somehow.
If someone is able to then get these Moto Z Force phones "fixed" I would really love to be able to follow the instructions and finish mine.
Again, thanks for all that has been done on everything else & I hope this helps.
