Hi all, a happy 2015 may everyone be healthy and happy.
I have an urgent issue here. My S3 has contracted the infamous "stuck in safe mode with volume down button not working" issue.
I would like to attempt a factory reset via the phone menu, however, i have important whatsapp messages i need to keep. Currently i use the backup option on Kies 3. May i know if its in depth enough to cover that? After a reset would choosing "Restore" from the Kies 3 menu put every single thing back into my phone like how it is? Including my alarms?
Thank you kindly
Use the backup and restore options of whatsapp: menu/settings/chat settings/backup
Or you can send them to your email.

Hi mate ,
I guess you mean S4 , if you are in safe mode check this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2392632
also check this ( you must be rooted)
open file "factorymode" in efs/factoryApp directory, if it says "off", change to "on" it must say YES to turn it off, save the file
For whatsapp go settings / chat settings / backup conversations then just save the whole whatsapp folder in your internal SD , copy it back and when you install whatsapp again it will detect it and it will ask you if you want to restore it , make sure that both version of whatsapp are the same or at least that the new one you are installing is not older than the one you had
Thanks for the reply bro, mine is a S3 not S4. Do you have any idea if factory resetting will restore the safe mode with volume down button not working issue? And will kies3 backup restore be complete enough ?

Is this possible?
--> someone is posting in a S4 Q&A thread a total sensless title
Is this possible?
--> he also knows that his question doesn't belong there because he owns a S3
Is this possible?
--> I gave him an reply: Yes, a kies restore would be enough!
Is this possible?
--> he is born in 2005

I hope i am not wrong but i haven't saw any relative topic in our forum, if not please forgive me in advance and point me to the link .After installing 2 programs in my PDA, i "lost" the entire section of the settings pulldown menu and of course all the relative programms/settings you can find there like for examp: ''GPS menu/settings''. Please i am VERY new to PDA's and i am lost, i dont know what to do to bring it back. So i thank you in advance for ANY help or hint you can give me. Always with respect ...GREEK DOM
what two programs did you install? i suspect you have actually deleted the links from your device using file explorer, if you have the only way to return them would be
1. copy the shortcuts from another device
2. Create the shortcuts yourself
3. Hard reset the device and it will restore the settings for you
option 3 is the easiest option for you , being a noob. Make sure you have synced the contacts and data with your pc before doing a hard reset as EVERYTHING will be wiped
Hi.
I need some help. Every so often the messaging service gives me a fatal error, and I loose ALL of sms messages!!! This is not good.
Is this a know bug, with a fix incoming?
It really annoys me!!!
I was using Handcent and thought it might be because of it, so un-install it and today with Androids own messaging widget it happened again!!
I installed a program, called "sms backup and restore" but it won't work the restore, with over 300 sms... I can see my backup sms but it won't restore. It restore however with less than 100 sms.
Anyone knows a good sms backup app?
Thanks!!
No one??
Do u use a taskkiller ?
Yes... And also read in another Forum that using an Anti-Virus could cause this, so un-install it and let's see.
Thanks
Just to share HTC reply...
Dear Mr. Soares, Thank you for your reply, Kindly follow the steps below to solve the issue you're facing:
1) Please check if the issue persists by trying to use another SIM card preferably from a different operator.
2) Please make sure there is enough free memory on the “Phone memory”, to check the available memory kindly go to Home>Menu>SD card & Phone storage, make sure that there is at least 5.0 free MBs on the phone memory, if not kindly delete some applications to free memory.
3) Please turn off the handset and restart it again while pressing and holding the "Menu" button to open the handset in safe mode, and check if the issue persists or not.
4) If issue not solved kindly uninstall any 3rd party application that you have on the device and has any relevance to the contacts, to check the permissions of the applications kindly go to Home>Menu>Applications>Manage applications>Permissions, to remove 3rd party applications please open the device in “Safe Mode” and delete the applications.
5) If the issue is still not solved you can kindly try to perform a soft reset to the device by turning the device off, removing the battery and putting it back in again then turning on.
6) If the last step didn't solve the issue, kindly backup all the information on your handset either by synchronizing to a PC/laptop or by using a data backup software to back the information up on the memory card of the handset then perform a Hard Reset to your handset, kindly follow the steps below to perform the Hard Reset: Go To Home>Menu>Settings>Privacy>Factory data reset, Tap "Reset Phone" then tap "Erase everything" Kindly be informed that this process will erase all the information on the phone memory of your handset.
Please note that you can contact us via support line. For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx, you'll find a toll free number that you can dial only from a landline. Best Regards, HTC Team http://www.htc.com

Hello, I recently bought an S4 after owning a Nokia N8 for like 2 years now , I just need some help in transferring my whatsapp chat history and groups, I read on several forums that it is simply done by transferring my backups from the whatsapp folder on my old phone to my new one, however I noticed different folder names and more importantly different extension : a msgStore.BAK.1 on nokia n8 and .b.crypt on samsung devices, so I am not sure if this will work.
So could any of you guys provide some help please? can the S4 detect the .BAK.1 extension as backup and restore it? and will my group chats be restored when I re-activate on the new phone?
Thanks.
no i am having exactly the same problem
Migrated from Nokia N8 to S4 LTE and transferred MsgStore.bak1, MsgStore.bak2 , MsgStore.bak3 files to S4, whatsapp starts and only show names of the groups, nothing else is restored, even groups are empty (no chat history)
anyone got any idea what might be going wrong ?
Regards

1. Uninstall ur Whatsapp in ur S4
2. Go to ur old phone and look for one folder called "Whatsapp"
3. Copy this folder to ur pc for example
4. Conect ur S4 to the pc and copy the folder (step 2) to ur Internal Storage (If u had whatsapp before, u will have the same folder, overwrite it then)
5. Install Whatsapp in ur S4 again
6. When u start whatsapp, it will tell ya if u want recover ur backup. Click in RESTORE and done (like in the pic attached)
did exactly that, it asks for restore, but only restores group chats, and individual chats are all gone,
even groups are not fully restored, just last 1-2 messages are there.
1. Piano tones on Dialler
I recently unlocked my Lumia 830 and i found the location of the system sounds. My old phones had piano sounds, and i thought, why not? So i googled some piano sounds and renamed them to be easier to replace.
Just extract the attached archive (dmtf.rar) in:
Phone\PROGRAMS\CommonFiles\Sounds
Your device must be unlocked. Full FS access has to to be activated.
2. Back-up Whatsapp Conversations
In Whatsapp go to Settings/Chat Settings/Backup to backup existing conversations.
Then connect your phone to the PC* and go to:
Phone\Data\SharedData\OEM\Public\WhatsApp
and copy the "Backup" folder in your PC or SD-Card.
Next time you hard reset you can re-place the folder to restore the messages.
*Your phone has to be unlocked. Full FS access has be activated.

Good to know. Obviously the backup is stored in both folders....
That explains why the app can restore data fastly after re-installation.

hi, i cant see the sharedData folder.... i got full FS, can anyone help me ? thnks
Hi,I wonder if anyone can help me out - I factory reset my GT-I9505 (stock rom -Android 5.01 Lollipop - never rooted).
The problem is that I would like to recover my sms messages - and I didn't use an app from the Play Store to backup first.
I did though make a copy of my 'Phone' folder onto my Linux desktop. I thought this would give me a complete copy of the phone's internal memory including hopefully the sms messages that I need - and that I could copy the files back to the phone.
I can't see any sms / mms database in this copy - I can't even see any sms database in the phone currently when connected to the computer - probably because phone is not rooted.
I was able to recover a lot of other files and photos from this 'backup' - perhaps the sms database was not permitted to be copied to the PC.
Is there any way that I could restore the messages do you think?
I would be happy to root the phone or use adb or other software - I suppose it all depends on whether I actually have a copy on the computer ( not sure if I have or if it is hidden in some way - I thought Linux would see all the files.
Grateful for any advice you can offer.
Power Ranger
Your "backup" consisted of copying files from the internal storage and/or microSD card to your computer. However, text messages are not saved on any of those. They are saved on the /data partition of your device, in an XML file, which you have wiped during your factory reset.
Long story short, your SMS are forever lost. Next time use an app for this.
Thank you
Pwnycorn,
thanks for replying to my query.
I know I messed up but just wondered if there was still a way to recover the sms.
No-one would want a phone that left personal data still on the phone after a factory reset, so I think I knew the answer all along - but sometimes it's worth asking someone with expert knowledge of these things, just in case there is something that can be done.
Anyhow I appreciate you taking the time to reply and advise.
Thanks
Power Ranger
