Solution at Bottom
I stupidly encrypted my SD Card. This resulted in slower startups as it always searches for errors, and notifies me that it's encrypted, plus it's slower to view, load and transfer any files associated/on the External Card.
Worst of all, for some reason I cannot disable the encryption. On my friend's phone she has the option under Settings > Security > Encrypt SD Card > Disable Encryption. I however, do not have that option and I have no idea why
Here is a picture of the screen I get instead:

}
I only have the option to change my screen lock type. When I go to do this and put my current password in, I get this:
All other forms of secure lock screens are disabled except for password.
I've googled around on the internet and I cannot find any answers for this problem.
I've tried:
1. Disabling everything that is set as a device administrator. Rebooting and seeing if I can disable External SD Card Encryption. > Didn't help at all.
2. Formatting the SD Card after taking the files off. > Encryption is still on and I cannot turn it off.
Whilst doing this I always made sure I had more than 80% of my battery on my phone.
Does anyone else have any ideas? It's really annoying to have to use a password all the time, it's a little excessive in addition to the huge performance hit I get when interacting with stuff on my External SD Card.
I'd happily /thank anyone who can help me out.
EDIT: I spent 3 days trying to work this out, and googling around. I then also had to put up with it for 10 days.
Simply to find that all I had to do, to get the option to disable the encryption and get all of my options for lock screens back again was just set a password WITH A NUMBER in it...
Then after that, the option to disable encryption appeared and voilá. Finally I get my fingerprint lock screen back and my External SD is Unencrypted...
YES!!!!
Wow it took me 5 hrs of surfing on the net to finally find this answer, thank you so much for sharing!!! (Sorry it took you so long also) but I thought I was never going to find it haha whee! Thanks again!
Hi Leijonasisu,
I am so happy I found your post as I am facing the EXACT same problem. However, I am not very clear on your solution. I am attempting to try this as you stated > "Simply to find that all I had to do, to get the option to disable the encryption and get all of my options for lock screens back again was just set a password WITH A NUMBER in it..." what do you mean by this and how to do it? I appreciate your urgent help. thank you.

it means you need to set a lock screen password to access your phone, when the phone turns off after 2 mins of inactivity to save battery. You probably don't have a security password set.
Another internet visitor jumping in to say "thanks!"
P.S. To others, if your current password is ALL numbers, then you still need to change it. Update your password to have at least 5 characters and 1 number. As soon as I did this, the SD Encryption setting lit up.
I encrypt my sd card and now sd is not working in my samsung galaxy j5 .i put sd card in my phone but its not working and no sd card is found in mob settings plz help me

Hi,
My Nexus 4 is running completely stock 4.2.2, it's not even unlocked let alone rooted (first phone I've felt happy enough without root) and was running fine until yesterday when it ran out of storage space and gave me a warning. So i uninstalled a couple of games, hoping to free up a couple of gigs.
Now though, i can't get to the settings menu or any associated screen. I can toggle the quick settings from the pull down menu, but if try to enter the main settings menu it briefly flashes up and then closes. It's the same if i try to access settings through the launcher, and if i try to get to any settings menu via other means (ie. long press an icon in Nova and select 'app info' or 'uninstall') the associated menu again just flashes up and then vanishes within a split second as if I've pressed back straight away.
Nothing else seems out of the ordinary - apps update, i can get to the play store, apps run fine, just the settings menu.
Any ideas? I can't find anything similar searching here or elsewhere. I've obviously rebooted the phone but without access to the settings i have no idea what else i can change. I'd factory reset but I've not backed up a couple of apps and usb debugging is off so i can't use Carbon (for some reason it's always had problems keeping the initial enabling and needs plugging in regularly),and i can't use Titanium without root so i wanted to see if anyone had any bright ideas first
Perhaps there's a way to just reset the settings menu? I've no idea what it's process is, but some action similar to "clear app data" should reset it :/ Just brainstorming here.
if nothing helps do a factory reset. your apps will come back automatically through the play store when you log in.you'll loose your highscores but most apps are cloud driven anyway,

Sorry for the OT but is that a genuine quote in your sig?!
Anyway @OP I think factory resetting is probably your only viable solution here, it's a very odd issue and there's not much you can do to solve it without a settings menu.
You need to clear the data for settings. Install titanium backup and see if you can. You'll need to root it first though. Crap..I forgot forgot you said you arnt rooted.

Cheers for the suggestions, was hoping there would be a fix but I guess a factory reset in the morning it is.
Frustrating as this sort of thing really shouldn't be happening out of the blue from a stock phone - it's a fairly huge bug!
Ironic that I resisted rooting to ensure I kept the reliable and simple experience of the nexus, only for it to be what stopped me fixing it when it broke :-\
Won't make that mistake again!
This probably won't work but try opening your quick toggles then long pressing on wifi or bluetooth, that's supposed to take you to those individual settings. Then if you hit the icon in the top left you may be able to get back to the main settings.

Nope, sadly does the same thing - the settings menu briefly flashes open before closing.

Hey OP, did you figure it out yet? I just noticed that trebuchet launcher allows you to go into settings via a shortcut in the app launcher. Probably won't work, but hey. Try another launcher?
Yes cheers a factory reset wasn't needed in the end - I worked out the problem.
I've been using my sim with my n4 as well as my new HTC one and hot swapping between the two for a week or so. I also have avast installed on the n4 which has an option 'disable settings when no sim inserted' which I'd forgotten about.
I only thought of it because when I initially took the sim out I got an email saying 'warning unauthorised sim inserted, id: {null}' or similar.
It didn't work with my sim installed either but I logged into avast, turned that setting off and everything was back to normal. Turned the setting back on now (once the sim was in) as it's obviously going to be an absolute pain for thieves too!
I guess it's a problem with hot swapping the sim while avast was running, the switch didn't get triggered even when I reinserted it? Either way now it just means I turn the n4 off before removing the sim now!
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
Haha, at least you now experienced first hand how secure your settings menu is.
Exactly what I was thinking! Nice it gave no clue why it was happening and if I didn't know the password for avast it would have made life very difficult as it also disabled usb debugging, so anyone who wanted to wipe the phone would have needed some serious android knowledge.

First I find my Swiftkey generates an error message at boot after KitKat update...
Now I try finding directions on my phone and then press the button for directions and get the below error.
I'm starting to not like this KitKat update. Can anyone please test by searching for directions to... McDonalds or anywhere and see if yours generate the same error?
When you go to location settings... there are no settings for high accuracy or device only.
Thanks.

Did you actually check your GPS settings?
KitKat has multiple location settings (device only, low power, etc). You may be set to low power which will give you that error.
I'd get it all the time in KK Roms when I'd travel since I leave it on low power until I need maps.
Thanks. I got frustrated and wiped my phone again since I didnt have much on it from last night and when using map it gave me the error message.
But somehow after reading your message I went into location setting and it was set to high frequency and when I loaded the map app it worked!
I don't know how it changed to high frequency... there is no bullet to activate it. Frustrating but at least it's working.

I think there's something that asks you when you first launch the new ROM and the default is low power mode.

Update on the nav... it wasnt until later in the evening where I found the button to change to high frequency... you go to settings > location section and for some reason wasnt apparent to me before that you can press "Mode" at the top to change. I thought it was just a label and not a button that drills down.

I keep seeing people call it "high frequency", r u sure not mistaken with "high accuracy"
KK has combined Android location and Google location access, so you have to go in there, tap on the seem-to-be-gray-out button and change it to whatever you like. There are 3 options there. Explore it!
Hi,
So I am trying to setup my note 4 to be on GPS only mode all the time. But everytime I turn off and turn on location, it goes back to High accuracy mode.
How do I make it stick to GPS only mode?
Thanks.

This is "normal." Every time you turn location on, it defaults to high accuracy and you must change the settings to power saving. If you turn location off and on again, it will default again.
I hate it too. It's annoying as heck, but it's a stupid Android problem and not the Note 4. My old phone did it on Kitkat too, and it was an LG.
The good news is that you can get to the location settings quickly by holding the location toggle in the quick settings pull down. Unfortunately, you'll have to go to the settings everyone you turn location on, or just keep location on or off.
My phone isn't really rootable, but MAYBE there's some sort of trick you can do if rooted. If so, I hope someone can help you more.

same issue on my s5 and its damn annoying.
I posted a request in apps section to see if a dev can make a xposed module to fix it, but I am going to see if I can fix with tasker, as tasker can do cool things like toggle settings after a mode is activated.
Go into Settings -> Location and you be able to adjust the GPS connection settings there.

that only works until you disable it, then it changes again when turning back on
Just came across this INSANITY, think it's because I installed (and promptly uninstalled!) the weather.com app. It changed the settings, I'll try with clearing the cache:
Code:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3/502397-how-do-i-stop-my-location-mode-changing-high-accuracy.html
Why isn't this on the Android web site and first result in Google. It's like they WANT everyone to suffer. I can't rage here, but believe me I'm cussing right now.
Genius, got it!.. It was one of the Google apps!!
Rebooted to Safe Mode (probably irrelevant ) & cleared the data - on several Google services, dunno which is the culprit - and voila!
On Reboot, switching Location back on presented me with the dialog to NOT have High accuracy; yes, lol!
Going to try and add that screenshot to the post here. =)

Well, this is officially the stupidest thing Google/Android have ever done. And it's been around for a while, as I see. It is still there on Marshmallow ... how fantastic. Yep, they do wanna troll you and own you ... that we get.
Here's a possible fix for rooted phones - https://csullender.com/blog/2014/01/26/automatic-high-accuracy-android-location/ just revert the procedure somewhat and make sure that Tasker tells Maps (or whatever nav app you use) to default to GPS off which is “battery saving” mode in Secure Settings.
This is insanely retarded ...
Any of you guys that are already in possession of the phone, is Samsung's Private Mode no longer availabe? I tried messing with it at Best Buy and could not find the option. Thanks in advance.
Not particularly sure but I believe it's only available when security is set on the device?
A display model will therefore not have security set and so will not have P-Mode enabled?
Don't know if you asking for this thing but i found something like that in setting under privacy and safety

I don't know if it's about phone I tried (I have used demo phones in Samsung Store) but it sucks that Private Mode shortcut isn't in notifications menu anymore. It was very practical to use it that way in S5 and S6. I couldn't even find a way to edit menu and add it notifications menu.

You mean the browser private mode ? I used it at a store when I logged in to my Gmail and uploaded some pictures from the displayed S7 Edge to my account, so yes it is available (but it's something called "Secret" or so).

No, it's different than browsers. You can hide pics in that mode:
http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/support/skp/faq/1062652
I received the phone last week as a pre-order through T-Mobile. My S7 Edge has Privacy Mode for hiding any files on the phone that you want behind a password or pin. I'm trying to figure out how to move them to the SD card at the moment.

Guys, relax...the private mode is there. But in the store you have a stripped down ''Store version" of the software.
Do not know about moving on to SD card.

No. Private Mode creates a hidden partition on your internal storage. It won't be movable to the SD card.
In the Gallery app select the photos/videos you want to make private and then tap on the MORE button and move to private. It will ask for your fingerprint or PIN to make the move. If you want to view the content later you select Private Mode from the notification bar, do a two finger drag down from the top and you will see the icon.
.
Did you able to turn on private mode wiht fingerprint? I could do that in S5 and S6 but I couldn't choose this in S7. If it's avaible for you, I will check stopped apps in Package Disabler Pro I did it when I cheched today, it was in menu now
Can anyone help me please.. desperate... I've forgotten my pin to private mode on S7 Edge... is there anyway to get this back. Samsung suggest a factory reset.. if I back up my phone.. will everything in private mode be backed up too? and also.. if that part is successful, will I be able to access the files after I restore? or will they be encrypted still?
I logged into my android head unit using my google account (gsuite) and was forced to setup a screen pin lock.
Now every time I start the car it boots into the Lock Screen and there is no way to remove it, I removed the account and it still shows there.
Even when I disable google smart lock and find my device it gets automatically enabled after reboot.
Anyone know how I can get the screen lock menu again it doesn’t show in settings/security but it disappeared.
I hope someone can help
Attached is the version number of my unit

Yes i removed it in the end
from the play store download shortcut maker, you can create a shortcut for anything on your android device or search all the plugins and modules.
Search for pin or passcode or screen lock and it will show you all the apps that have that word in the menu including System settings.
Create the shortcut, and keep trying until you find it.
Once you find the right menu run it and you will get that menu again and disable it.
the shortcut maker application will let you find hidden menus that you can’t access on your screen
if you are still stuck I’ll send you a photo of the shortcut I created
Thanks for the reply. I ended up getting it fixed using a similar method.
I used Nova Launcher to create an Android activity shortcut/widget on the desktop.
It took a lot of scrolling and trial and error, but in the end the activity that got it done was called .password.ScreenLockSuggestionActivity.

I just figured out how to fix this, and deleting Credentials and disabling through the regular settings menu does not work. I downloaded an app from the Play Store called Android Settings X. There you can reach the hidden settings. Choose "Choose screen lock (SetupChooseLockGeneric)" to remove the Screen Lock. Bam, fixed!

If that option doesn't work there is another one, 2 options down, called "Settings (ScreenLockSuggestion)". This is the only way I know of that actually removes the Lock Screen and will not revert back.
My issue with screensaver is when I first start the unit the first time I use a SWC it turns the screensaver on! Only does it once and then it is fine and SWC function as intended until next time the unit is restarted. I dont think it is an issue on android end as I have the screensaver turned off in there and when turned on it looks different, I think it has something to do whatever settings there is in the headunit as it has an option for screen saver to be: screen off or customize (which is a clock but no options to customize...)
I cant find any information on how to fix this issue anywhere and it seams I may have bought a strange android stereo (B200?) as I find all information I find is irrelevent and looks different to how mine is.
