[Q] Can the Nexus Player be used COMPLETELY offline? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been watching a lot of Nexus Player videos on YouTube, but I haven't seen one yet that shows anyone being able to skip the online portion of the system setup in the beginning. Is it possible to choose to not link any accounts or anything to the Nexus Player and use it COMPLETELY offline forever, without ever connecting to the Internet or logging into any accounts?

It seems so, but you would be limited in what it could do. You couldn't chromecast without a Wi-Fi connection. You couldn't stream videos either. You could only play videos off a USB stick (if you root).

I'm okay with the restrictions for now. I just wanted to be sure that if I wanted to set it up completely offline for the purposes of rooting and sideloading that it could be done if necessary. I have fine wifi, I'm just making sure I can do everything locally in case support for the device is just completely dropped in the future.

What I should have also said was that you have to set it up once via Wi-Fi. After that, you can use it without restrictions for local content.

Oh, so you really are REQUIRED to set it up online once? You can't even skip the initial setup?

I'm pretty sure you are required to login once to use it. Once you do that though, you can root it, put custom roms on, or whatever. I doubt there will be many problems if/when support for it is dropped.

Ah, that's a good point, huh? If I can get in just the initial time, I can basically put a bunch of stuff on there to prevent that in the future.

Is There a Way

Is there a way to actually control my phone from my computer? I mean, if I want to send out a text or something and don't want to have to pull it off the dock, or if I want do do something with the phone or whatever and just leave it on the dock, is there a program somewhere that allows that?
I knwo we can create virtual devices and stuff, but I want to take it a step further.

Yeah, well I dont wanna have to wait 10 minutes for their crap site to load (since the redesign). I want to be able to do whatever I want with my phone like I was 'touching' it, but with my mouse.
Haha have you guys tried PicMe?? Im quite sure that may be what you're looking for. You can control your device with your mouse, and you can use your keyboard to type.
Hope this helps
If all you want to do is control your phone Picme will work, but after trying it last night I found out that it would not work if the screen went to sleep. If you want to be able to access files from anywhere then I will post a thread of what needs to be done to get it to work once I finish getting it setup. Right now i have a website redirect to my phone using dyndns service but have not been able to get any app to recognize my external ip address.
I think I may have gotten something. I will let you know shortly
Hell to the yeah (oH THAT'S NOT COOL TO SAY ANYMORE)
Here is what I want to do.
1. Control my phone from any computer over wifi or internet
2. Access my phone from any computer over wifi or internet
I started messing with android's vnc server here. It looks like our kernel needs to be modified to use it correctly, but it still doesn't allow access to the content on the phone. I can also use swiFTP to access my phone storage over wireless but not through the internet
I have installed dyndns on my phone and have a website redirect to my phone and can verify that it does work because I used it for Picme.
I have also tried another ftp server, but could not get it to work over the internet.
Here is an app that is suppose to work on the phone as avnc server, but I can't get it to work..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6896000#post6896000
i can't work on any of this until later tonight.
i dont know if its completley possible, itll be a little difficult
What's crazy is in the past 2 days I have seen 5 threads started on xda about this same thing which I found doing searches. Do people not search.

Spotify on the Fire

Hey guys,
I just got my Fire and I love it (besides the fact that I feel like I have to sideload EVERYTHING). I installed the official Spotify app, and it ran alright aside from some screen formatting problems (the navigation buttons for the Fire get in the way). The main issue is that the Fire doesn't realize it's a music app for some reason and puts the wifi connection to sleep when the screen goes off so my music shuts off... Very frustrating. Anyone have any ideas for a fix for this. I thought about installing Spare Parts Plus, but I can't find it anywhere to sideload it and it's not in the stupid Kindle App store...
Anyone? I may return my Fire if I can't get this to work...It's THAT important to me that I can stream without the wifi turning off...
you might want to look into apps that keep wifi on since the settings page for wifi is gone in the Fire. I'm sure one of those must exist somewhere. If not it seems like a very trivial app to write. Some sort of wifi lock toggle.

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mdsoftware.wifipowermanager&feature=also_installed
Try any of those apps, I'm pretty sure WiFi manager will be able to do whatever you need and more.
The screen formatting problems make it impossible for me to pause playing music without exiting the app - am I missing a way to do that?

It's silly, and really, really less-than-ideal, but using the spotify widget works for this. Toss in a volume control widget on the same screen, works great.
(This, of course, assumes you... have a normal launcher installed >.>)

Nice tip! Thanks. With ADW installed, being able to use a widget really is a life saver! The app is really crippled with the Kindle bar over the top. I hope they come up with a fix soon, but seeing as they don't officially support it, and Amazon probably won't allow it in the store, I won't hold my breath.
I can't get the buttons to show up correctly on the Spotify app itself. I can't tell if it's something to do with the tablet, or something to do with the fact that it's on a modified version of Android. I guess once the custom ROMs are out we'll know for sure.
Giving the numbers and spotify strategy, my guess is a fire friendly version is not far off..sound like we have a workaround for now.

Even if it *is* a silly workaround
I also told Amazon they should try to get it working properly, since, hey, I pay for Spotify, I'd like to use it on here.
Also, the music app that comes on it tends to be a bit... stuttery.
i have been having the same issues. Does anyone know if Spotify works on any tablets?

webcam

Is it possible to use nexus 7 as a webcam online ? Websites don't seem to see the camera or mic ? Is there a hack or app that will fix this ?
I would love to see this!
Go to the Play Store and get IP Webcam. This will stream video for you.

I want to use tablet as a webcam not stream video , that app dose nothing like that . Thanks tho
Not sure what you really want
You asked for an app that will allow the use of the Nexus 7 as a webcam on the Internet. If you are not streaming video, how are you going to use it?
With the app mentioned, it makes the output of the front facing camera available for access on your LAN or via the Internet assuming you setup your router properly. And webcam reading software works fine with it.
The camera is poor for that type of use for two reasons. 1) it is facing forward not out the back, and 2) it is not a very high resolution camera. Unless you were placing this somewhere in a fixed position, it is very hard to control as it ends up with an upside down image and is hard to point.
You can see it using webcam capture programs like tinyCam monitor from another device. It doesn't provide audio output.
If that is not what you are asking for, you need to provide a better description.
Screen capture of the output of the app mentioned above from a windows box using Active Webcam attached.

You need a chat app on your device then... not a webcam app.
I don't use MSN anything so I am not familiar with it or what that service provides, but something like

might be a start.

Trying to get Chat Roulette going, eh? Just kidding. I don't think websites will work and you probably need an app.

I've visited a website that uses HTML5 instead Flash or Silverlight for their video on my GNote, and it worked with the built-in cameras. I don't recall the name of the website, but it was a chatroulette-like tech demo for HTML5. Once people start switching away from Flash we'll start seeing this more. It's pretty rare at the moment.

If anyone come up with a solution for the chatroullet fans, I would apreciate the reply.
Thanks

Theres another app called droidcam wireless webcam. You download a desktop program to go along with the app. It works through wifi or usb, I used it through usb about a year and a half ago. From there, i ran it through manycam, which is a virtual webcam program, by selecting it as the video feed. At that point, it should work with any program and internet website...such as chatroullet . You should just select manycam as your default camera and it should work. I used it with skype though, so i cant verify if it works or not..but in theory it should.
Again, i keep saying should, because it might not work right away. It definitely took a bit of play with the settings (and lots of unplugging and replugging) before i got it to be functional. I'll be able to test it tomorrow night if you didnt get it up and runing, as i am currently on vacation.
cheers

EDIT: sorry, i misread this post. I cant help you with that one, but if you wanted to use it as an external computer webcam...see above .
Using IP Webcam, this is easy to do...
Download the latest Manycam program. In sources, select your ip webcam,( http://192.168.1.129:8080/videofeed )(example)
In your chat program select Manycam as the source.
That's going through windows, as far as using the nexus 7 by
Itself, its not possible.

Does anyone know of a program or app that works on phones that have the Location Services turned off? Probably not, I'd guess, but figured I'd ask. I leave Location Services turned off whenever I'm not using something that needs it, which is most of the time.

I don't think its possible. Without location services turned on how would an app find your phone. Just curious, why don't you have location services turned on? It isn't a big hit on battery so it doesn't make since. Unless you are one of those big brother is watching nuts.

Nuts? I don't think there's any reason to get personal here. And you don't have to be a "nut" to see all the privacy issues in the news almost daily. And with companies like Google, Face Book, etc that are avowed data thieves, er, collectors, I think it's wise to do what I can to try and keep my data more private.
I am a senior programmer for a large international company. We got into data mining way on the front end of the craze. But we never stooped to collecting the levels of personal identity level information most folks just accept these days. So I know how it works, and choose to limit what they can collect from me.
I'm sure you've heard of App Ops? (Assuming you're either on 4.3 or a custom 4.4 ROM that has it). OEM's like to hide it away, but it is still there and still very much usable. You can set which permissions an app can use (to a certain extent) and if it tries to access something you've turned the permission off for, the device returns an empty set (essentially "null") for that data.
Here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schurich.android.tools.appopsstarter
This app just calls the location where App Ops is in Android. Note that this app will *NOT* work in 4.4, since Google changed the way it's accessed.
edit: I've used this to disable a lot of what Facebook can access, among other apps.
Thanks! Looks like a great app. Runs great on my 4.3 S4.

Sideloaded wear apps... Will they work with iPhone?

I know there has been a lot of confusion with android wear and iPhone compatibility..... My main question is: if you side load and android wear app (for simplicity sake let's say a web browser or something that requires a constant connection to operate on say a moto 360... Will it work while connected to an iPhone? I know the Google app works but even to have maps back if you side load the APK... Thanks

Yes, they will work, however, you need to do some magic to have internet access over bluetooth for apps that don't support it out of the box. If you force your watch to use wifi(you can disable bluetooth on your phone) then all apps will work through wifi regardless of your phone.
Or, you can put apps you trust in the /System folder.

Thanks! So regarding this "magic" you speak of... Is this to do with the apps or is it something that requires a jail token iPhone? Is it relatively easy to achieve? Like what lekofragfle said about throwing them into /System?

Yea, I think throwing it into system is enough. No need to jailbreak your iphone. However, you'll need to access /system and for that you need root access or you can modify it from the TWRP recovery.(I strongly recommend against permanently flashing it to your watch, you can boot into it by loading into watches's ram memory) So, either way, you need to know how to use android command line tools.
Wish I knew how to access /system on watch, I know about rooting android phones but not enough to tinker with Android wear watch [emoji53]
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
The wear system is the same as a phone. My watch (the Sony sw3) is actually easier and safer to root than any phone or tablet I have had. And you can do a temporary root too.
