Does anyone know of a program or app that works on phones that have the Location Services turned off? Probably not, I'd guess, but figured I'd ask. I leave Location Services turned off whenever I'm not using something that needs it, which is most of the time.

I don't think its possible. Without location services turned on how would an app find your phone. Just curious, why don't you have location services turned on? It isn't a big hit on battery so it doesn't make since. Unless you are one of those big brother is watching nuts.

Nuts? I don't think there's any reason to get personal here. And you don't have to be a "nut" to see all the privacy issues in the news almost daily. And with companies like Google, Face Book, etc that are avowed data thieves, er, collectors, I think it's wise to do what I can to try and keep my data more private.
I am a senior programmer for a large international company. We got into data mining way on the front end of the craze. But we never stooped to collecting the levels of personal identity level information most folks just accept these days. So I know how it works, and choose to limit what they can collect from me.

I'm sure you've heard of App Ops? (Assuming you're either on 4.3 or a custom 4.4 ROM that has it). OEM's like to hide it away, but it is still there and still very much usable. You can set which permissions an app can use (to a certain extent) and if it tries to access something you've turned the permission off for, the device returns an empty set (essentially "null") for that data.
Here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schurich.android.tools.appopsstarter
This app just calls the location where App Ops is in Android. Note that this app will *NOT* work in 4.4, since Google changed the way it's accessed.
edit: I've used this to disable a lot of what Facebook can access, among other apps.

Thanks! Looks like a great app. Runs great on my 4.3 S4.

[Q] HTC Aria stolen - advice?

My aria was stolen and there wasn't any anti-theft software like mobile defense on it.
Is there anything I can do to get it back or track it, or is it a lost cause?

I'd hate to be the bearer of bad news but to MY KNOWLEDGE you're out of luck. Now, that's not to say there isn't a way hence the all-caps "my knowledge". Sorry for your misfortune bud...

Sorry to hear about your phone being stolen. I would troll craigslist and ebay, but even if you find it on there it would be hard to recover.
As for advice, install my lookout on your next phone. You can locate your phone from any computer and also make it "scream"
yeah look out is the way to go...
Pretty much a lost cause at this point. Next time, if there is a next time, you may want to look into apps like the above mentioned or Where's My Droid, which may help since they allow you to locate the phone using the GPS.

Personally say Lookout helped. I was in class Left my phone on a desk while i used the rest room friend was supposed to watch my phone. Came back gone. Asked the teacher if i could use his laptop. Withing 40 seconds my phone was screaming. I found it, and the student was suspended.
None of the apps mentioned before will do you any good if you have GPS turned off. Tasker can remotely turn on GPS, locate your phone and send you the location by simply texting a key phrase.

This is something you have to build in Tasker. I have mine set to enable GPS and open a GPS tracker app that can be monitored on the web. Only good if sky is visible.

You can just download Tasker profiles from the Tasker wiki site, not that hard. I have tested this a few times and you don't need a sky view for this to work.

apps for tracking?

So, being a paranoid, I wanna take precautions regarding my N4, so in case it's stolen I might have a chance of recovering it. What app(s) should I install to track it? I heard Cerberus is ok? I activated ADM but I see that unless I have data/wifi on, it doesn't find it. I have location access on. Do all these tracking apps need to have data on before being stolen lol? thanks!
Yes, you'll need some kind of internet connectivity. Some apps like Cerberus allow you to send text commands like "Cerberus enable mobile data" or something like that. You should definitely take a look at Cerberus, it has so many features.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I second the suggestion of cerberus, you can send text commands and turn things on from the web interface, as well as being able to hide it from the app drawer.
Also if you are rooted, you can make it a system app, which means even if a thief factory resets your phone, cerberus will still be there.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
thanks guys, will look into cerberus with more detail. glad to hear it has an option to activate it on the go.
just saw there's an app called Android Lost that has pretty much the same features as Cerberus( saw that avast/lookout have an antivirus too which I just don't need). My question is, can AL be installed as a system app, so it still works even if the phone is reset? thanks!

[Q] Default Apps not working?

Whenever I've clicked on a phone number to call via Google Maps, it would always show up that defaulted apps and ask me what i wanted to use.
Everytime it pops up, i keep clicking "Always" for the default dialer. I thought it would set it as default, but when i had to look up a business to call their place, that "Default Apps" keep popping up. Is this in any way connected to Samsung Hubs like how screen Rotations was related to samsung hubs removal?
Is there a way to fix this? I don't want to have to click it again while driving.

I tried it myself and it went right to the dialer without a pop up. What apps is it asking you to choose from? More of a work around than a fix, but... If you do not use the other apps, can you delete them? That way you shouldn't see the pop up?

There were two, one a dialer and the other one is the Lookout. The one with the Lookout always ask to scan before dialing out. Don't get why it keep asking that.
EDIT: i think the same thing happen to the IE (Chrome) when it asked til i removed Chrome and it doesn't ask anymore. haven't tried it with the youtube yet.

Well. You are probably aware, but lookout is your security/antivirus app, so it makes sense that it scans.
Unfortunately I do not have it installed so I cannot comment on how it is suppose to act.

That not the problem. What i meant is that the default doesn't work. It always ask, even when i select "Always use as Default". I had assumed that from that, it'll always use the apps i selected as a default, but for some reasons, it isn't working.

I installed Lookout and was able to reproduce your experience. That might be the way lookout works. As a security app, it gives you the chance to scan everything before executing. OR It could just be a bug.
One thing is for sure... Lookout is the cause of your grief. You can play around with the Lookout settings, but in the end, you may have to choose what is more important to you.

Automatic Data for MMS

Hey everyone,
I used to have a couple of HTC phones back in the day (Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt, Rezound), all of which were capable of turning data on when I receive an MMS. I always leave my data and WiFi off when not in use. Both my S4 and Nexus 6 cannot do this. I was wondering, does the Moto X Pure turn on data when you receive an MMS? My friend has an HTC One M8 and his can turn it on automatically. I would assume the Moto X Pure does not do this. I currently paid for Tasker, and every method to do this through Tasker has not worked properly for me. Does anyone know a solution? It's very aggravating that my MMS do not download automatically, and I have to turn on my data and then download them just to receive my message. Thanks in advance!
Bump
Why are you turning off your data? You say you turn off data and WiFi when not in use...when is that? A cell phone without one of these in use is basically an expensive slab of metal and plastic???

I don't need to be connected to the internet 24/7. It's a waste of battery. I don't use my phone all the time, and it's way easier to just turn on my data and catch up on my notifications. I'd rather that then deal with my battery draining more when I'm not even able to check my notifications anyway. So it's a complete waste for me.
Bumps
Current generation phones can get a day of battery while keeping data and WiFi on the whole time, thus making what your looking for unnecessary and to the best of my knowledge no phone has had this since ~2012. If for some reason you're unable to charge once a day I'd recommend a battery pack for such an occasion.
Sent from my Nexus 6
so I was wondering the same thing. I'm coming from note4 which turned automatically. shouldnt have to explain why we want the data off. please can someone just answer the question?
Since everyone is slightly thick headed when it comes to not keeping on data I'll give you the real answer. With the update to lollipop google removed the ability of texting apps to do just this. Textra, handcent, and even the good ole aosp sms app could have this. For this option to work for any app that contains the setting you need to make that app a system app. Then it will work. Their is an app on the play store that moves to /system. It does require root

It's so dumb that they removed app's access to toggle data. I'm trying to move Google Messenger to system in Titanium Backup. I'll let you know if everything works! Thanks for the tip!

I believe their words made the system more secure. Agreed though pain in the @ss. Heads up though. When backing up in titanium whatever you back up won't be a part of it. So if full wiping you will have to reimplement the messaging app as a system app.

Sorry to be a pain, but I've been extremely busy and couldn't get the Google Messenger to become a system app. I tried Titanium Backup, and manually moving the app's lib files and nothing works. What is the play store app you are talking about? The only one I could find just moves system apps to user apps. Thanks in advance for all of your help!!
I downloaded the Link2SD app which successfully moved Google Messenger to a system app. The setting to turn data on is checked but it still does not work. Anyone have any other ideas? If not that's okay I'm just curious if someone else has this working.
So, I've been using this app and it works very well. You have to be rooted though. And I am running MM.
"Auto enable data" allows you to have ur data off at all times,, and when an MMS comes through it will turn on your data, download the MMS and when done it will turn off data.
"WIFI fix" will turn off WIFI if connected to a WIFI, and turn it on once data turns on and then off after it's done downloading an MMS.
Name is AwSMS. Get it on the Playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms

Smart Settings on Verizon

I looked for smart settings on my Verizon unit and couldn't find it. Looks like Verizon removed it.
Here is how to get it back.
Download QuickShortcutmaker from the market
Open it and scroll down to smart settings.
Open the smart settings dropdown.
Now press the first smart settings drop down.
This will create a icon on your home screen.
That's it.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for this suggestion. Most Smart Settings cannot be used without the My Places feature active, and that has apparently been disabled by Verizon as well. Any workaround suggestions?
Perhaps try Llama? It can be found in the Play Store
I would be very interested if one of the tmobile phone owners have an apk of my places, and could possibly post it.

Attached are the APKs. One of the app itself, the other is the engine. Not sure if you need the engine or not though.
Appreciate you posting that, unfortunately it said that they are corrupted. Both files are only a handful of kilobytes each which cant be correct

Possible its under root folder then system then app folder. Im just not sure

I recommend MacroDroid. Much better than Smart Settings. Smart Settings is terrible by comparison. Verizon did you a favor.

No, unfortunately Verizon verified that they did indeed REMOVE My places functionality from their version, so no it will not auto-locate your home location after 5 days, either.
IMO, they are trying to force you to use more data. Most people turn their wifi off when they leave, and turn it back on when they come home - Smart setting will do just that. So, why would Big Red not want you to have it? Because when you have to do it manually, you'll forget to turn it back on when you get home... and when you do that, you'll use more data. my *theory*.

Or people will just leave WiFi on...because it doesn't use that much battery when not in use. This isn't a conspiracy to get people to use more data. Sounds like carriers have to pay for certain features on phones and Verizon didn't want to cash out for some less useful features. Plenty of other apps out there that can turn your WiFi on and off automatically.

Hmmm... most people I know turn it off, but to each his own. But when that is intentionally disabled along with FM radio, along with Google In Apps Search shortcut (by which you must do an internet search first before just searching for something on your phone...) - a pattern seems to be emerging... but let's give Big Red the benefit of the doubt, right? Let's forget about the lawsuit about them asking Blackberry to disable bluetooth so you couldn't transfer files, or the similar lawsuit about the same kind of thing with Motorola...
No... Nothing to see here... Move along, people, move along...
Any luck with this?
Is there a root app that can do the same thing since My Places isn't working?
