s4 and knox upgrading - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I need some help. It has been awhile since I messed with my husbands s4. He has the origonal from like 2 weeks after release. I did upgrade his phone once. I THOUGHT he was knox free but I honestly do not know. I see no sign of knox when the phone boots into twrp recovery. But I thought in order to be knox free he had to be on like mf9 bootloader or something but it looks like his system is straight nae. his status says custom (which I chalk up to having twrp). but knox shows in the app list and it says se android enforcing and secure boot status says samsung. security software says mdf v1 release 2. baseband and build say nae.
he cannot install any apps from the amazon app store and I thought it was the sd write problem but I have tried all the fixes and no luck. He would like to upgrade to the newest but if he is not knox installed than he would like to stay that way. I dunno if on the s4 you can have twrp and still not have tripped knox???
any help would be greatly appreciated.

please help

[Q] Is there a way to re-enable Official OTA updates?

Just to know if there is a way to re-enable official OTA updates after rooting the GT-I9505 with CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505.zip..
I would like to avoid downloading 1.8GB of the stock firmware and re-flash it, since I still have made no modification to my stock rom.
I've just rooted the phone, installed Triangle Away, reset the counter status to "0". That's it!
Still no custom recovery installed, still no ROMs.
In Odin mode the phone says:
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
CBS-Config.lsb: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable
Now if I go to About Device, Software Updates it tells:
The device has been modified. Software updates are not available.
Thanks in advance for your kind reply.

Try this, go to supersu u use permanent unroot, after that set phone back to factory settings
See this thread also for further information. Note that the latest firmware has enhanced KNOX security features that will stop OTA and connectivity with Kies, even if you unroot. See last few pages of Linked thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=278

Thanks Tunestwo and thanks HANDSY
Indeed the unroot doesn't help. But I find a way that seems work:
The Triangle Away app has an option to "allow tracker to run", wich cause the system status under settings to become normal, even if that may also cause the bootloader status to become custom.
In any ways, with this option turned on, the OTA seems to work and seems perfectly able to download future updates. The OTA says now that I already have the latest updates.
We will se at the next official update
Triangle Away is not working on my MH8 firmware. The counter is not working. I'm on custom rom Echoe 2.1.1

Is written somewhere that Triangle Away needs stock rom (even slightly modified) and (maybe also) stock recovery in order to work...

[Q] Soft brick? Hard brick? Sort of firm'ish brick really

I've made a bit of a mess and I need help please. My s4 is softbricked, but as softbricks go, it's rather hard.
I have an early S4 i9505 bought from Carphone Warehouse (UK, unlocked, pre knox). I rooted it, installed TBackup, greenify and got it how I wanted it. Then I downloaded a stock firmware from Sammobile and tested to see if I could get it back to 'warranty' condition, which was a success.
Confident that I could obtain warranty if I needed it, I re-rooted it, installed TB and greenify, and it ran sweetly for months from that point onwards.
I read about the arrival of updates (and knox) and concluded I didn't need them. It was working, leave it alone.
Then out of the blue, my nice stable machine broke. I didn't change anything I was aware of to cause it.
No normal boot.
No recovery.
Download only.
Using Odin, I tried allsorts, eventually getting the same Sammobile firmware to run.
2 days later, it broke again, same as before, but worse!?
Then I tried all sorts of stuff downloading no end of things trying to get it to boot or even go into recovery. The most promising approach was to reload the firmware along with a .pit file, but still no joy. I've lost track of the other things I tried, but I've been doing it for a week, so a lot has been done. In desperation, I even tried downloading the latest firmware, so I now have signs of knox of the odin page.
I now have the following symptoms:
Booting into recovery brings up the blue 'booting recovery' message then just blackness.
Normal boot is exactly the same as above.
Unpowered conection to my laptop gives a 5 second boot loop featuring the buzz only.
I can reliably boot into download and download stuff with Odin and change the little Odin page status messages. After (foolishly) trying the latest firmware, these messages say
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME GT-I9505
CURRENT BINARY Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS Official
KNOX KERNEL LOCK 0x0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID 0x0
CSB-CONFIG-LSB 0x30

If anything else is not working (especially, if you're unable to go to recovery) I'd call sammy service center. Your download mode says that you did not rooted your phone, and knox is untouched either.

Thanks for looking spamtrash.
I was wondering if I could get away with that. It does look good from the Odin display, but the flash counter must have a pretty high number in it by now! Won't that show up somewhere?
Do you think it does actually have a fault on it, rather than just some software that's messed up and needs tweaking?
Thanks
Steve

1. Are you able to go to recovery mode?
2. Assuming that your previous communicates were taken from the screen in download mode - you're clean.
If answer for 1 is: NO, and assuming 2: do not bother the flash counter. Flash counter does not means you messed with custom ROMs, it just means amount of the ROM update tries. As they are unable to prove that the counter was not increased by failed KIES updates, you're safe.
To go deeper, service will have to flash and wipe your phone.
One thing: remove your sd card prior to giving/sending it out.
Try a different usb cable.I was in same boat as you (after stupidly thinking mobile odin pro liked modems).
Luckily I had an unused cable off my tab 3.

cannot update s5 software with kies, help?

my galaxy s5 model number is sm-g900t, android version is 4.4.2, ..not sure what other info might help, but anyway, i cannot update the software/firmware over the air because the device is rooted through steps on here and its been rooted awhile now. so anyway, i downloaded the kies 3 from the samsung site, it says all im supposed to do is plug the phone in, a box is supposed to pop up showing an update is needed......well, the kies box does pop up, but all it shows is current firmware version and shows my internal and external storage availabilty, and so on.... no auto update thing came up. so in kies i went into tools up a t the top, i hit firmware upgrade and initialization, then a smaller box pops up saying---does not support initializing, so now what? nothing else i can do in kies except move pic files around and such. i need to update the software. any advice? i attached 2 pics.....pic 1 is the initial message when phone is plugged in, #2 is when i go into tools and hit ugrade

Samsung has now embedded a security flag called KNOX in it's later devices. Unfortunately after you flash a package/custom ROM or whatever with a different signature than Samsungs own it trips that KNOX flag.
When your KNOX flag is tripped you can no longer update your phone via official methods. It is just the way it is, and there is nothing to be done. Once KNOX flag is tripped, there is no way to "untrip" it, so you will never be able to update via KIES again.
Im not really sure whether flashing a stock lollipop rom via odin works when KNOX is tripped, i have never tried it, so you should wait for any other member for confirmation. As far as i know, it shouldn't be a problem.
What i can tell you, if you have the time, is that you flash a ROM that is compatible with 4.4.2 (Omega v13 or AllianceROM v5.6 etc) and then flash it's ROMs lollipop update after a full wipe. It is the only thing i personally am sure about (i have done it before).
I'm by no means an expert on the matter but I'm pretty sure that if you can't get the Ota due to being rooted, then updating vIA Kies isn't going to work either.
Go to settings> about device> status
scroll to bottom of list and respond here what it says under "device status" (it's gong to say either official, or custom).
If it says official, you could unroot, maybe check that the proper drivers are installed on your computer, and try once again to apply the update via kies.
If it says custom, then knox has been tripped and I cannot help further.
The biggest issue here is that if you take the OTA update you'll lose the option to root or downgrade so you should probably use TWRP to install a ROM that's pre-rooted rather than trying to get the OTA

[GT-I9506] Need help resetting my device software status

So, a few months ago I decided to root my phone with towelroot to give a try on a few root applications, as i was curious, but after that, I decided to remove through supersu it as, even with supersu, was more of a vunerability since I wasn't really using it.
Fast foward a month, I attempted to update my software and was denied with the reason that my device was custom.
Some important info:
- I'm running Android Jelly Bean 4.3, that has never been updated.
- I've attempted a factory reset through the phones recovery mode and made no difference.
- My KNOX waranty value is 0x0, and I would like to keep it that way if possible.
- Phone is factory unlocked.
Also, I've though of using Odin to flash the firmware back, but then I read that there is a possible that KNOX warranty gets triggered, even with a samsung official rom, is this true or am I safe to use it?
My objective is to have my phone back to factory settings (this means wannan xposed is out of the question), in order to be able to update my phone and keep using it, and while there is a lot of similar threads around, most of them reffer to GT-I9505 and GT-I9500 and mine is GT-I9506, which leaves me in somewhat of a doubt wether I should follow those or not.
Thank you for your time.

Flashing a stock rom trough Odin will NOT trip Knox. So just go ahead and flash the firmware you want.

Alright, I assume the proccess is about the same as on the other versions.
Also, should I flash 4.4.2 instead of 5.0.1? The reason I ask is due to this thread.
Update: I flashed 4.4.2 with Odin3 3.10, and it went smooth and knox is still safe, however, for some reason, so thank you Lennyz1988 for the reassurance .
However, I'm not able to update to 5.0.1 Lolipop through OTA, as attempting to update states that im fully up to date.
My phone is running as NL (T-Mobile), factory unlocked and due to my quick research, seems that there is no official OTA update for it. Is it correct or am I looking in the wrong place to update my phone?

Knox after going back to stock

Hi!
I'm trying to go back to stock to try knox features like secure folder. I have restored my device (Spain unbranded) with SmartSwitch and flashing firmware through Odin.
My problem is that Knox and Secure folder says that it can not work because I have installed unauthorized software. SafetyNet passes, on download mode, I see all official, and Apps (like banking apps) works fine without detecting root.
I have warranty void bit = 1. This means that, even flashing again stock firmware, I will never be able to use Knox? I'm worried about using root cloacks methods because of something stops working (for example due an update) I will unable to access to secure folder.
Thanks a lot in advance!

As your knox is tripped already i.e. showing 0×1 so you will never be able to use knox related security features as well as samaung pay on your phone..When knox is tripped once while in rooting or trying any unauthorised software installation, it will never been reset to initial state either by trying to install stock firmware again..

I can recommend you flashing ambasadii's ROM. I'm currently using it with the latest SuperStock Kernel and have secure folder fully working. You'll have to download the full 10.1 ROM and the 10.2 OTA which is about 500mb
