[Q] Data dump on S5 SM-G900A with broken screen. Please assist! - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Team,
I have a colleague that has dropped her phone and shattered her screen. She is needing important data off of her S5 SM-G900A and I volunteered to take a look for her, to see what I can do.
Some facts:
The phone does not have USB debugging turned on.
The phone is not rooted, and the version is believed to be up to date, but I can not verify for sure.
The screen is locked by a passcode.
As mentioned, it is the G900A ie. AT&T.
She does not have anything stored on her SIM card (contacts)
She does not have anything backed up in her email, despite her email being setup on the device.
She did not have an SD card, so everything is on the internal storage.
Odin does see device when connected to my machine.
In theory I should be be able to create and export a NANdroid backup through CWM, if I can get it on the device) but their is nothing conclusive that tells me that CWM will work on the device since it is not rooted, and the bootloader is locked by AT&T.
Any assistance would be terrific.
Thank you.

Firstly, She is returning the device AT&T and wishes the device not to be taken apart.
Also, Isn't it the most common way to root a device, the Device to PC method? and can you elaborate more on the damage you spoke of?

motherboard dead

G900A cannot be rooted through odin, only option is from towelroot directly on the device, either way not sure it would help anyway.

I'm having the same issue. my screen and lcd are broken and I have a finger print unlock. Isn't there a screen emulator/mirror that will enable us to access it through the PC?

There are a few tools that let you see the screen but they require an app on the phone if im not mistaken and debughing enabled.

Phone permanently locked to AT&T and need help!

I stupidly wrote down the wrong sim unlock code given to me by ATT on my phone and I guess I entered the wrong code too many times. I called ATT tech support and they said that my phone is locked permanently ATT now.
Is there a fix around this or am I screwed?
Thx

As far as I know, you are SOL and is locked permanently to ATT, unless theres a way to unlock it via the service menu after a code has been inputted wrong.
Go to Cellunlocker.net and talk to someone in support about getting a code that unlocks your sim-locked status. It's not the code to unlock your phone, it's the code that resets the perma-lock state of the phone.
I guess i am SOL i called cell unlocker and they said they dint have the software to do it
Did you try the method listed for unlocking your phone from the service menus - without an unlock code?
I have not seen it explained, but it appears to me that by disabling the SHA256 network lock, you are basically getting rid of the requirement for the unlock code that is cryptographically dependent on the IMEI.
I did it on my AT&T phone and plopped in a T-mo sim and it worked fine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285431
I am not responsible for anything you may mess up though.

You might have one other option that I know of that might work, might not work, or might make things worse. It is the "Free unlock" menu method in the general section. I am assuming you haven't tried it already. Normally I tell people to stay clear of it because of the slim chance it could screw your phone up, but in your case, I'd say it's already screwed up.
Follow the directions and see if restoring your "Golden backup" (NV restore) resets the cell locks on your phone. You can also try thing like turning SHA256 "On", or "Off" and see if it makes a difference. The reason the free unlock method works for some and not others all depends on what info resides in your phones NV backup. For some, it restores full phone functionality without network locks (sim unlocked), for others, it restores exactly what is already on the phone's NV memory (still network locked), and for others, it restores a backup that screws the phone up. There is a slim possibility that if you restore the NV data via the hidden menu, you might restore your phones original sim locked state and then be able to use the code with SHA256ON or maybe Off.
The risk you take if you try it is completely yours.
It might help, it might not help, or it could make it worse. Good luck.
Would flashing back to stock rom work? I am still fairly new with android devices coming from iphones so i dont want to mess with it if it has absolutely no chance of working. The phone is still working fine just can't unlock it.
Thx for the suggestions tho

Flashing back to stock is not going to cure your problem. You're kind of hosed at this point. Scott's suggestion is probably your best bet, BUT you could end up with no phone working at all. If you can still get phone service I'd leave it as is and give up ever unlocking.

TO ANYONE WHO IS FOLLOWING THIS THREAD, PLEASE DON'T DO ANY THING TO YOUR PHONE BECAUSE YOU THINK IT MAY BE COOL. Really know what your doing and why before you do try it. You can really mess up your phone. There a lot of good info in this forum, use it. And take your time, read, study, and read some more.

I wasn't able to unlock my AT&T GS4 via the service menu methods, nor with an unlock code I bought online. I was finally able to unlock it via the USB program at FastGSM. It seemed kind of shady but it worked for me...

[Q] Damaged phone, rooted, warranty HELP

Very sorry to post this in such a panic, I have been researching Google and XDA forums for a couple of hours now and just can't find the information I need.
I dropped my phone and broke the proximity sensor. It is making the phone all but unusable. I have the Total Equipment Protection from Verizon, which covers damage, theft, and loss. However, the problem is I have rooted the phone, and I am concerned they will say I have voided the warranty.
I tried doing a hard reset, and it still shows up as rooted. I have downloaded the files to 'restore to stock', but I don't know if that will unroot the device, or not.
I had previously installed Voodoo Rootkeeper when I had rooted it the first time. Now, after doing the hard (factory) reset, I installed Voodoo Rootkeeper from the Play store and it says I have Superuser installed, but I don't see it in my apps list. I am guessing that I just need to reinstall it from the play store because there is a button in Rootkeeper that says, "Google Play".
There's also a button that says "Temp un-root". Will this unroot my phone so that I can return it to the store under warranty?
Is there a way to completely un-root this phone, once it has been rooted?
Just FYI, I did not use the Chinese root. I used the root where you plug your phone in to the USB and use adb to run a program, which then asks you if you want full root or the partial root that you can only access via USB/abd.
I'm sorry if this seems confused... Basically, I want to unroot this phone and return it as quickly and simply as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Use the LG flash tool to return to stock (detailed somewhere on these forums) and you will become completely unrooted. I've done it before and it does reset the status flag in the settings screen.

THANK YOU! I had hoped it would be that simple. I tried to read through that thread to see if that was the case, but couldn't see anything definitive. I was in a bit of a panic and distracted too, so it's possible I missed it. Hopefully, this thread will get indexed by Google and other people who may have the same problem can see this.
Will try that and report back!

Do you think I should try that one specifically instead of the generic instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
?
I didn't know what a TOT file is, so I Googled it and found some warning to be very careful with TOT files because they can hard brick the phone?
Not working
Ah, heck!
I tried the first generic 'restore to stock' from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
and when I get to the step where I click 'ok' to proceed and flash the rom, the program stops and the phone displays a "B100" and then "ROOTED" in red letters!
I'm going to read through all 27 pages of that thread to see if anyone else has had this problem, but in the meantime, does that Verizon specific thread fix this problem, would either of you happen to know?
Thanks!
Total protection is not warranty. You breaking your phone is not a manufacturer defect which warranty covers.
Regardless, neither method cares if it's rooted or not. I have returned more phones than I can count that have been rooted and not once have I had a charge.

The VZW specific method worked perfectly for me....also, shows unrooted in the settings and download mode.
Just make sure to verify the md5 checksum on the tot file.
Verified, flashing the stock tot resets back to pure stock including a reset of the root flag. I used the VZW specific writeup and it went exactly as advertised. Recommend you use that one.
Thanks

Thanks, I was wondering about that! I've never been a Verizon customer before and I've heard stories that made me nervous. You have definitely made me feel a bit more reassured. Of course, I still want to unroot it a) to show myself I can, and b) just to be safe.

Can't hurt to do it. When I had my Incredible 1 I asked my buddy about it and he told me when he gets the phone they check for physical damage, check the water damage indicators, plug it in and flash the new software, then test it to send back out. I went through 6 incredibles, 4 incredible 2s, 4 rezounds, and 4 galaxy nexus. All rooted all returned without resetting no charges.
But i can say 100% guaranteed without a doubt your total protection insurance does no care what you do to the phone because it's not a warranty issue anyway. If you return your current device for a new one you're paying the $99 fee anyway. If you send it in as warranty they'll charge you full pop if they see physical damage.
HOORAY!
HOORAY!
I followed the steps at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960, and it worked!
Thanks again, everyone!

Not getting Ota for 4.4.2 and kies doesn't work (battery issue)

This is my mom's phone and she is getting less than 2.5 hrs screen on time on the note3.
I'm with T-Mobile and currently the phone is on 4.3. The Android os is keeping her phone awake and now the battery life is worse than before. Now it's less than 2hrs SOT
So I thought I'd update it and it just says "software update is temporarily unavailabe. Try again later"
OK, no problem since I'm not using it with Verizon I figured I wouldn't get the update but it was worth a shot (since update is pushed thru Verizon and not samsung)
I tried to use kies 2.6 and it says use kies 3.0. With 3.0 it says device is not supported.
The phone is not recognizing it being plugged in as a USB there is no USB option in the notification bar that allows it to be toggled between mass storage and camera.
I'm using the v8 v9 USB from my nexus 4 and used my galaxy 4 USB (don't have the note 3 one) (just ordered one) could it be because I'm not using the new 3.0 USB?
Everything is stock not rooted

What did you have to do for that just put tmo SIM in and you are good to go?
My quandary is t mobile note 3 have unlocked bootloader Verizon has a locked down bootloader t mobile also has a wider feature set and better rom support. Tmo network just sucks though.
What I would do is factory reset the phone root it install safestrap and one of the custom roms and I would not bother trying to odin nc4 onto it.
If your dead set on a stock experience you're going to have to download a stock nc4 image and use odin to upgrade I advise against this as it runs the risk of tripping Knox rooting and rom is a smaller risk but still a risk. But the other disadvantage is nc4 is not rootable.

you're not getting the "Over The Air" update because you're on the wrong air. TMobile won't push a Verizon OTA to a Verizon device on their network.
You're best off rooting the phone and installing the NC2 KitKat leak+firmware - it's stock KitKat, rooted.
On your current setup you can use Kingo for root (just google it)
Install safestrap 3.65 from here - http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/note3/hltevzw/safestrap (the main safestrap thread is here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610 ) ...

[Question] Kingo Root 1.4.2

So, I periodically try different Root methods on this sm-n900v and tonight I tried Kingo Root (PC), and one time when it rebooted it showed the custom unlocked icon. Is this normal? I figure I'm going to try and repeat what I did until it shows that to me again...
Feedback is always appreciated!
When you say custom unlocked icon do you mean when the Galaxy screen comes on? I see that, but I used Towelroot instead of Kingo

I've actually thought this same thing, maybe wipe the phone out 100% so it would be as if nothing was there then find a write program to put the older bootloader on their or maybe in that case could get into the bootloader and unlock it and flash the phone as new...hmm, I've had that thought many time but I think it would just completely mess the phone up beyond Bootable or working

I am ready to try but i need tool to wipe my aboot.img and a software to flash via qualcomm mode and old aboot.img
I'd be willing to do this stuff to if we can find the right tools
The thing about doing a full 100% wipe to reload say the inital factory firmware is what is called a jtag is needed it is a serial connection to the flash chips that is used in the factory to do the inital programming. The problem is this connection is cut off or more often not made accessible to assembled units.
there was with previous samsung phones a usb jtag kicking dongle that could kick a hard bricked phone into a sorta download mode.
this is not present on the note 3 and the note 3 has e fuses that permanently blow preventing some of these things. Additionally there is a built in check to prevent the loading of bootloaders that are unsigned or older than the current bootloader.
so in the end the only thing messing with wiping the boot loader is going to acomplish is hard or soft bricks...
it could be off topic but how they sign their updates? cant we fool the factory recovery?

Encrypted I know you guys are grasping as straws in desperate hope of the phone not being as locked down as previously thought. But if it were such a simple task of getting the dev device boot loader and fooling the system into thinking it is a legit update we would have an open phone.
the things with the nc2 and nc4 bootloaders was they for some reason did not use the check correctly and left it open for us.

Hey guys! I've got today this really weird case, an S7 Edge which a friend reports he founded, Android boots and prompts for a passcode (unknown) and when attempted to boot into download mode a quick legend appears saying "Binary mode blocked by MDM", when I attempt to do a Factory Reset from Recovery I also get "MDM does not allow factory reset". I'm pretty much stucked over here, device is in build G935AUCS2APF2 so my last resource was applying an update.zip (G935AUCU2APG1) from SD Card from Recovery but I get:
"Package expects build fingerprint of samsung/hero2qlteuc/hero2qlteatt:6.0.1/MMB29M/G935AUCUAPG1:user/release-keys or samsung/hero2qlteuc/hero2qlteatt:6.0.1/MMB29M/G935AUCS2APH1:user/release-keys; this device has samsung/hero2lteuc/hero2qlteatt:6.0.1/MM"
I also attempted to wipe user data from "ADB sideload" but obviously all commands except for "adb sideload ..." are rejected.
All comments and tips will be really appreciated, thanks!

The device was locked via boot passcode. Means no factory reset or flashing. It probably was stolen and if it was actually found doesn't mean it couldn't have been reported stolen.

Where did you get South America from? It's near impossible to steal smart phones now. Might as well just throw it in the trash. Plus it's against XDA to help unlock phones for this exact reason. It could be stolen, so even if it wasn't, you won't get any help here because of possibility.

Hey! It doesnt have a boot passcode, what I really can't understand is the fingerprint issue, maybe this device is rooted? Thanks
The answer is this:
The unit was owned by another. Because you reset it ...and the previous owner did not remove their password on it (assuming it was not stolen) then , You need the password to open it up. unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this.
BTW, this is a common problem when companies sell excess phones they have for employees. They forget to get their pass codes and so the phone essentially is unusable until they can fix.
There are way to solve this but you will need to do specific research on this to see if you can find the fix for this type of phone.
