Upgrading to a Moto G? - G 2014 General

Hey everyone, I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus since it came out in late 2011. I think it is time to upgrade. I'm not looking to get the latest and greatest, just a phone that is better and more stable then what I currently have. I know the Moto G (2nd gen) does not have much better specs then my existing phone, so would it be worth the upgrade? Any feedback would be great.
I use my phone for email, games, movies, etc. I also regularly try different roms, kernels, etc.,, so a good dev support is important. I want to get the Nexus 5 but I would prefer to save the $ and use it for other things.
Thanks

I have one. I really like it. Battery life is not great so I would get a car charger if you intend on using it as a mobile GPS. The form factor is shirt pocket and convenient, the CPU is fast enough so the phone response is good, and it's inexpensive so if you drown it in the crapper you won't be pooping bricks right after it.
But you need to be aware that if you get a new one of these that the carrier has contractually obligated Motorola to not provide a bootloader unlock code, then there is no way to root it. Verizon is one of these carriers. If you can find a used phone that hasn't been upgraded to kitkat 4.4.4 then you CAN unlock it with Sunshine. But the carriers pushed 4.4.4 via OTA the minute it became available and all the new ones come with it.
Right now there's a lot of "developer version" moto G's for sale on Ebay. Apparently Motorola screwed up and marked a large number of them in their database as restricted from unlocking, then went and dumped them on the secondary market. These CAN be unlocked but Motorola is handling unlock requests on those on a case-by-case basis.
Some carriers do not restrict bootloader unlocking. Who is your carrier?

Thanks for the info! I won;t be going through a carrier, I use T-mobile but usually buy my phone somewhere else and don't worry about contracts. I was going to get the xt1063 on amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-2nd-generation-Unlocked/dp/B00MWI4HW0/ref=dp_ob_title_def
It doesn't seem like I should worry about unlocking it and then rooting since it is not carrier specific. My GNEX has an upgraded battery that is the same as the current moto g one, but the moto g has a more efficient processor so I think I'll be ok with the battery life on the moto g.

If you don't plan on going outside the us get the xt1064 instead of global. Updates are not faster on one va the other. Plus the xt1064 has an it's to 5.0.1

I do travel outside the US once in a while. Sorry, I am a little confused by your statement. xt1063 does get updates quicker? What other advantages does 1064 have over 1063?

They are basically the same phone. The us edition received an update from 21.11.23 to 5.0.1 before the global.
The difference is in the supported bands. The US GSM version includes bands that are used by T-Mobile in the US. Frequency Bands (by model) US GSM Model: (Optimized for T-Mobile US) GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 1700 (AWS), 1900 MHz) Global GSM Model: (Optimized for AT&T and Global Use) GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)

So is there still no 5.0.1 for the Global XT1063?

Yes and no..... For XT1063 If your phone comes with 21.11.17 then yes there are 3 otas to flash 22.11.6 22.11.16 and 22.21.25. If it comes with 21.11.23 then you are still waiting for lollipop. For XT1064 if your phone comes with 21.11.17 then you can upgrade only to 5.0 with ota 22.11.6 if it has 22.11.23 there is an ota for 5.0.1 in 22.21.25.
If you are not afraid of unlocking the boot loader then you can flash firmware to get to 5.0.1 either way

Yep, XT1063 on 21.11.23. Unlocking the BL requires a request to Motorola correct? And it voids warranty automatically?

Yup. Its only 149.99 for me so I didn't care and unlocked the boot loader. If you don't do that its a waiting game for the ota, or someone with root to pull their ota and post.

I have a n5 and my wife has a moto g 2014. Without a doubt pay the extra 100 or 150 and buy the n5. Its better in every way possible, even battery life if you flash elementalX kernal.

My HTC M7 died so I picked a 2nd Gen unlocked G up. Its not bad at all so far we'll see after I get lollipop how it runs.

Clearly spec wise the N5 is a better phone. You're stating the obvious. People buy the Moto G because they want to save some money. That extra $150 could potentially buy you 6 months worth of phone service. Some people value the $ savings vs. having a slightly faster, larger phone.

When I said every way possible, I was not referring to merely the specs. Every way possible, including dev support, kernels, roms, n5 is less glitchy, feels better in the hand, better screen quality, etc. etc. . Ive never had a freeze up, or random reboot like my wifes moto g has almost everyday. Id easily pay 150 dollars to avoid having a year of frustration with my phone, that i use every day and rely on. If people like you want to put up with sub par dev, and a glitchy device that feels like a brick, made of dated hardware just to save 150 bucks, have fun with that. Im all for saving money, which is why my wife bought the moto g instead of spending a little more and getting an n5, which I've had problem free since release. Big mistake.

I used to have a Nexus5 which I sold and bought the moto g. For normal everyday use there's no significant difference(at least for me). Battery life was horrible on the nexus, something that was obviously better when I used the elementalx kernel, but the moto g lasts even longer with the exact same use. SOT 5hr 20' on the nexus (with changed kernel) where on the moto g I can easily get 6hours and it's completely stock. My record is 7 hours 6'. And to be honest I never had a reboot having the phone for 3 months now.

Exactly the same situation here...however i gave my nexus 5 to elder brother...
Finally got rid of horrible battery life... Moto g2 runs widout a glitch and more than happy to keep it wid me... Although no custom rom support but i dont care as long as i dont feel the urgency to flash one

I don't have any experience with the n5 but my experience with my new moto g 2014 has been nothing like what lokke9191 is describing. I've had 0 reboots, 0 boot loops and 0 app crashes. Just like anyone else, I need a dependable phone as well and I've had no indication that the moto G 2014 doesn't meet that requirement. I would recommend reading a few reviews on both the moto G 2013 and the 2014 to get a better sense of the bang for your buck these phones give you as far as specs go.
I'm on Tmobile and passed up the opportunity to get a moto x for $340 and couldn't be happier with my moto g. I got a Consumer Cellular xt1064 from Sears for $150 and paid $3 for an unlock code on Ebay. I needed tethering so the first thing I did was get a stock xt1064 KitKat ROM (21.11.23) and I've stuck with it since (I'm not going to go to Lollipop yet because of the reports of bugs across almost all Android devices).
Edit: @OP: I would look very carefully into xt1063 vs xt1064 - the Consumer Cellular Sears models appear to be xt1064 and not xt1063. Also, I don't know if the xt1063 will get H+ on Tmobile but the xt1064 definitely does. If the xt1063 doesn't get H+ you're going to be stuck on 2G.
Finally, I don't think it is fair to compare XDA support for the n5 to that of the moto g 2014 - the n5 has been out way longer than the moto g 2014. I had no trouble finding what I needed on XDA to get the stock Motorola KitKat installed (vs the Consumer Cellular ROM). Also, depending on what the needs of the OP are, custom ROMs could be a total waste of time.

My wife's moto G has been fantastic in every way. Battery is 3 times better than her Galaxy S2, 0 random reboots or any nonsense like that. She is on Straight Talk $45 unlimited plan. Plain and simple it's an amazing phone for $150. I do regret getting the global version over the US. I will likely stick with AT&T prepaid providers but it would have been nice to have Tmobile as an option. Still is just no 4G.

On day 3 now and haven't had a single random reboot or any problems. Battery life has been great and lollipop is running without a hitch.
Also I have the unlocked US version on tmobile and don't really feel the loss of LTE with what I do.
Great phone for the price

M on AT&T/StraightTalk, GSM Frequencies, Verizon blocks?

I've heard that Verizon phones, though "global" are locked from the US GSM frequencies.
I'm considering getting a Razr M and using it on StraightTalk AT&T or T-Mobile prepaid.
It appears the frequencies should be fine. 850/1900 UMTS/HSPA + GSM.
Anyone have any thoughts on that?
I'll need to trim the SIM down to MicroSIM size, and get the phone unlocked, but besides that...?

Well it's an atom processor not A15, lower graphics performance by far, less apps in the market and can't get it in White.

Righto-,thanks. I read somewhere else (maybe it was you?) that the NV settings in the radio block MNC 230 (tmo) and 150 (at&t). There was a guy who had looked all through them and couldn't find where it was happening.
Is this MNC blocking something that would be remedied by buying the Austrailian version? I want an A15 CPU + GPU not the Atom one, simply because I like sticking it to Intel, and because I like the white phone not the black one.
Does the developer edition work with AT&T/T-mobile? Maybe I'll just buy that. This phone certainly is slick. I hope whatever fix we get will let us keep the stock ROM, always a bit more exciting (and stable it seems, usually) to me than CM(X)

As far as I know, the Australian one will work just fine with AT&T or T-Mobile (no 3G on T-Mobile unless you're in a refarmed area, though). Worst case, it's locked to Australian bands, and you need to get an unlock code to make it work internationally. The reason the Verizon ones are locked for US bands is because Verizon doesn't want you buying their phone and then switching to their competition. Telstra obviously doesn't have the same problem, since they're not competing with AT&T or T-Mobile. Of course, what I'm saying isn't guaranteed to be true, since I don't have an Australian M myself (but I'm trying to decide whether to import that one or the RAZR i). I'm like 99% confident you wouldn't have any issues, though.
The developer edition does not work on AT&T or T-Mobile, either. We should be able to keep the stock ROM. That's how it worked on my Droid Pro and other Verizon Motorola world phones. We just flashed a file that modified the baseband. There was even a file to flash that would return the baseband to stock. ROM flashes didn't affect the baseband once it was modified.
What I'm wondering is if it may just be possible to take the Australian radio and flash it to the Verizon M to make it work on our GSM networks. That would pretty much disable the CDMA radios, but we wouldn't need them anyway. I think some of the previous phones have gotten around the band lock by flashing a Chinese radio, so it seems like the same concept could be used here. I'm nowhere near smart enough to know how to do any of this, though. All we can do at this point (well, me anyway) is just let Team Black Hat and other Motorola developers know that we are patiently waiting for a solution.
Looks like I wasn't far off with my hypothesis. If the community can provide the radio image, we should know pretty soon whether it would work on the M or not.

It also works on the stock unrooted and unlocked Dev device so it should work fine on the stock locked bootloader devices.
Right now it appears to break eHRPD authentication when using a VZW LTE SIM with AU radio image. GSM service is fully functional with no modifications except the AU radio.

I've been searching for a way to buy this awesome phone in a *truly unlocked* state (bootloader + carrier), and it seemed to be, before now, that my best option was to get the australian one (it also doesn't have the ugly verizon logo on the front But, it's very hard to get it from here in the US, so getting the verizon dev edition and reflash the radio may be better. I'm currently with T-mobile, yes I know about the refarm ... I'll deal with that.
So, does anybody have a link for said radio image? freak4dell, have you gotten yours and tried to flash the radio?
Thanks, you guys are awesome!

But back to topic: are the image files in these two following posts any good to flash the radio, or do I need anything else, like a complete telstra fastboot image, or something like that (re-noob-alert: I'm a dev, but I've never messed with phones before):

No need, I just ordered my razr m developer edition from motorola.com We'll see how fast I can void my warranty
Speaking of which: do I need to unlock the bootloader (and void the warranty) to flash the radio? My understanding is that, since it's signed by the manufacturer, it should work without unlocking the bootloader. That way I can use the phone for a while and return it if it has any problems. Does anybody know?

Moto X Pure Edition will get LTE 3, 5, and 7 via OTA!

Great news this morning for whoever was holding out on buying the Moto X (2014) Pure Edition due to the LTE coverage. Motorola has said that they will soon be enabling LTE 3, 5, and 7 on the Pure Edition via an OTA update!

Effectively, both XT1095 and XT1097 will support the same LTE bands after this update rolls out.
Nevermind, I always forget Band 13... FML Verizon, worst network for tinkerers and phone junkies alike.

Huh? Verizon phones are factory unlocked and work on CDMA and GSM, compare that to what you get on T-Mobile, Sprint, or AT&T and Verizon has the best phones for phone junkies. Now unlocked bootloaders, I'll agree Verizon sucks with that.
Band 13 is only supported on the VZW edition Moto X (xt1096) and is one of their primary LTE bands. So yes the Pure Edition, or even regular AT&T edition for that matter, Moto X will work on the VZW network you are limiting your connectivity significantly.

Factory unlocked, really? So I could wait and pick up a Droid Turbo and use it on T-mobile? Hmmm, may have to research this. Although, the extra bloatware would probably keep me away.
But, back on-topic...
This certainly makes the Pure a much more useful phone. It still needs Band 12 (T-mobile owns Band 12 in 2/3 of my county) to serve the US providers that it is intended for, but this is definitely a good step in the right direction.
Awesome this will enable LTE in Euro for most people. This makes the new Moto X way more versatile than the old Moto X which contains only:[2/4/17] ... basically i can buy a moto x for any of my European friends

Well we can't say with 100% certainty since it's not out yet, but all other Verizon LTE phones are factory unlocked and can be used on other carriers. I've used my Verizon Note 2, LG G2, and LG G3 on T-Mobile. The only issues you would run into would be an "unknown SIM" in the status bar, and you may need to add APN entries. If you root though, you can easily fix both of these issues.
Actually itd be wayyyy better if they dropped band 5 and just included 20 ... 800mhz LTE is essential for non rural cities in Europe.

Droid Turbo - Use in EU and general impression

Dear fellow Droid Turbo addicts,
as I lost last week during a business trip my HTC One I head over heals decided to buy a Droid Turbo. Went to a Verizon store, got a Ballistic Nylon (look way better then fibre, I think) and took it to EU, Germany. Slipped a Vodafone SIM Card in, works perfectly. To put it in words - Droid Turbo works in Germany perfectly!
Overall I expected a lot of the Turbo and... everything was satisfied so far! The screen is amazing, handling easy, the look great, cpu fast and the battery - mind breaking. I don't get all the posts here about whats wrong with battery etc. etc. why does the Turbo has such a bad design etc. With ballistic nylon the Turbo looks absolutely great. Using my phone as I used my HTC One I get in the evenings ~40% Battery left under my usage (will post statistics soon).
Will update this thread with impressions from a non developer and just user view! Questions? Feel free.
Regards
Lyson

I don't get all the posts here about whats wrong with battery etc. etc. why does the Turbo has such a bad design etc. With ballistic nylon the Turbo looks absolutely great. Using my phone as I used my HTC One I get in the evenings ~40% Battery left under my usage (will post statistics soon).
Will update this thread with impressions from a non developer and just user view! Questions? Feel free.

What bands does Germany have?
Did you buy it outright from a Verizon store?
Wanna do the same thing and use it on other US carriers, the was always told by the sales representative that purchase without contract is not possible for verizon smartphones.

I bought a Verizon Droid Turbo new on Swappa and am getting LTE on T-Mobile in the US. I'm very pleased.
Verizon Issues
Hi,
I am based in SIngapore and was planning to do the same thing.
I just wanted to ask; I have heard that Verizon has disabled the wireless tethering and also pushes a lot of ads to the phone.
Once you put in a different sim card on a different network outside the USA do these issues still exist?
Also have you received any software updates?
Thanks a lot.

Can you do wifi tethering? does 2G and 4G work? I'm waiting for mine to arrive to the UK and after reading that Verizon disabled the tethering I'm a bit of scared as I use it a lot, I have unlimited data and my career allows me to do tethering

Thetering work absolutely fine. I had a few phones before (HTC One, Desire ...) all with custom roms and I don't miss any feature on that phone. So far, because it is a blank Google Android, there is even absolutely no need for a custom rom.
Back to my topic, BATTERY TIME! So guys yesterday I used my phone from 6 am over the whole day till 10 pm whilst driving to a business partner in germany with only 3g net on german autobahn. I used google Navigation for 4 hours (driving time both ways) AND did 2h38min calls. Much time spent on-screen, wifi, bluetooth and 3g all the way! I don't have a LTE plan so far. And guess what... Battery was still 16% last time looking before I got to bed.
So kick my ass or not, the. best. phone. I. ever. had! Battery-Life is extensive. Extremely fast (compared yesterday to a hardcore nexus buying friend and his nexus 5 [i should bring him a droid turbo next time I'm in the states]). Good looking. Does not get warm (FIRST PHONE EVER not getting warm). Fast charge does its job, though I charge with 750mA during night to safe lifetime (I'm an eletrical engineer in battery technology, trust me fast charge kills your battery).
Cheers
Lyson
PS: In a hurry as always so I'm sorry for all typos.. Will do correction on the weekend.
So tethering and mobile hotspot functionality work fine in Europe? I was told this is locked to Verizon in the US.
Also is there an option for English UK under language settings?
Thanks in advance.

Think it should work. Verizon told me over Twitter that it's unlocked. The bootloader might be locked though.
People who got it shipped in uk, how much vat did you have to pay?
Hi everyone... I walked into bestbuy and bought my droid turbo outright two weeks ago. I am from toronto, canada and i can confirm all features work ie. Mobile hotspot and such. The phone is unlocked and i popped in my sim and had lte right off the bat. No need to even update the apn settings. Also recieved the first ota without issue. Phone is a beast... Really looking forward to lollipop!!

Same experience here in Germany. No APN nothing. Nano Sim in there, that's it!
I've just got mine in the UK and I can confirm that it works fine with 3G and 4G under the three network. I'm able to do hotspot as well, so pretty happy with my new purchase. Yes it was unlocked so I just threw away the Verizon SIM card and put mine instead. Also, I didn't need to set up any APN and the phone started working right away without configuring anything.
This is the mobile networks setting with which I have the best performance in terms of signal stability:
BTW, I was able to disable almost all the bloatware from Verizon except for the voice mail app and something called Setup Wizard, which keeps telling me that my SIM card is not from Verizon every time I boot up the phone. Anyone knows if there is any way to disable those or at least to disable the notifications of the setup wizard? The notifications only come from time ti time, but it will be nice to just disable them and forget about it.
Hey @Lyson - which carrier do you recommend for a prepaid SIM card?
I'm heading to Oktoberfest and southern Bavaria for two weeks and am hoping to have a good data connection (preferably LTE if it's available) for Google Maps.

Droid Maxx? You are confusing different models.
Also there is no Verizon exclusive. (Only Verizon marketing LIE.)
These are 2014 Motorola Quarks. None are called Droid Maxx. Droid Maxx was something else entirely different, from 2013 and not for Brazil.
There's U.S. Quarks and International Quarks. There's basically two Quark devices sold under three model names:
Droid Turbo
Moto Turbo
Moto Maxx
______
USA:
* XT1254 Verizon Droid Turbo/XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx.
FCC ID IHDT56PK1
Same phone, same FCC ID. NOT EXCLUSIVE to Verizon! CDMA/GSM/HSPA/LTE. Identical device -- except for model name. The XT1250 will run on Verizon, with a Verizon SIM card. This device has LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13 enabled.

XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx sold by smaller regional CDMA/LTE carriers. The U.S. XT1250 can be unlocked and fully rooted, but is harder to find.
The XT1254 ("Droid Turbo") is the Verizon bootloader locked version of the XT1250. They are the same device otherwise. When Verizon says the "Droid Turbo" is "exclusive", they are talking about the NAME "Droid" which they have licensed from Disney/Lucas Arts. NOTHING else about the device is exclusive. It has the same FCC ID as the XT1250. The tech media is lazy and does not report this, and just keeps repeating it's "exclusive" to Verizon -- which is basically a LIE.
_____
INTERNATIONAL:
* XT1225 Moto Turbo and Moto Maxx.
FCC ID IHDT56PK2
Sold in Latin America under one model name, sold in India under another. Doesn't matter which one you have. Same device in all regions, same bands: GSM/HSPA/LTE -- but no CDMA. (Slightly different mix of LTE bands than the U.S. QUARK. See below.)
All XT1225 have the same FCC ID, no matter what model name, no matter where it's sold.
64GB storage only, with Ballistic Nylon (which has Kevlar underneath). The Ballistic Nylon versions of the Quark are really Ballistic Nyon + Kevlar.
"International " XT1225 has LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17.
Most importantly, bootloader can be unlocked.
We have FULL root, updated TWRP recovery, THREE custom Lollipop 5.1 ROMs (AOSP and CM12.1).
[Rom] NEXUS EXPERIENCE 9.8 [Quark]
[ROM][5.1.1][OFFICIAL][QUARK] MoKee OpenSource Project
[Moto MAXX XT1225][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 12.1
_____
U.S XT1254/XT1250 has LTE band 13, but does not have LTE bands 5 and 17.
Being in the U.K., unless you specifically need LTE band 13, then the XT1225 Moto Turbo/ Moto Maxx is the best phone for you.
I'm in the U.S. and I own two "international" XT1225 (Puerto Rico and Mexico), because AT&T uses LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17. (I also have no use for CDMA.)
My wife is Brazilian, and the major carriers there use 3, 7.
So the XT1225 is perfect for me, as I can use in both countries. I have FULL root, TWRP, and custom Lollipop 5.1 ROM installed.
Hi ,
I got it in France and work perfectly (i got it since january )

Is it a good idea to buy a G2 in 2016?

Hi guys. I was thinking of buying a G2 for myself. Do you think it is a good idea considering that it is 2016?! Is it a fast phone? To give you an idea of "fast", I checked my friends Nexus 5 and if the G2 is as quick as that, I am more than satisfied. Also, looks like Android 5.1 is not coming to G2 anymore, so in case I buy it, do you recommend upgrading to 5.0.2 or I just stick to 4.4.4?
Thanks everybody!
well ,I still use g2 ,right now with cloudyg2 3.3 and is amazing, new interface and etc ,blazing fast (no bugs at all,at least for me ) and i'm gonna stick with it till july -aug and I will buy g4/g5

Thanks alecore! Although I am not familiar with the CloudyG2, but I assume it is a custom ROM. What about the original (stock?) ROM? What if I keep the original software? Do you have any idea how fast is the G2 with that one?
this question depends on how much you planning to spend on a new G2 ! still G2 is a great option but it will not support marshmallow or may be it won't even get the 5.1 . and Cloudy support is dead as developer is no longer supporting it . but I've heard lots of good things about the new CheloZTeam rom..

I guess I can buy it for $150. Do you know f the 5.0.2 version is worth upgrading to? I heard it is buggy for some people and reduces the battery life drastically.

I noticed battery life was mediocre in 5.0.2 compared to 4.4.2, including stand-by time. but if you flash a stable aosp rom like aicp, mokee, you'll get amazing battery life compared to stock 5.0.2.

been on stock for 1 year and half ,KitKat was awesome ,and when lollipop came out it was even more awesome (because of new interface/customization/etc)and I had no problems at all ,no lag ,no restarts or something else ,meanwhile I decided to change the look a little more (got bored of lollipop and waiting for 5.1.1 or marshmallow it was endless) and I went to root the phone for cloudyg2 ,because I didn't wanted to change the phone ,there's no point ,unless you want to go for a phone from 2015 to.
EDIT : and about battery,i had 1 day and few hours with medium use (4-5 hours per day) and for a easy use (1-2h/3h per day) almost 3-4 days
Thanks appsmarsterx and alecore! I think I would stick to KitKat if I buy it. I am yet to decide Do you guys know if I can use the D801 model in europe? Here are the frequencies for it:
LG G2 D801:
2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900
3G: UMTS 1700/2100 (B4), UMTS 1900 (B2), UMTS2100 (B1)
4G: LTE 700 (B17), LTE 1700/2100 (B4), LTE 1900 (B2)
Surprisingly, I can buy D801 much cheaper than D802!
Think about some Chinese phones for that money, you can have meizu or xiaomi, they will be supported for some time. G2 is nice phone and it surpasses those phones in benchmarks but support is dead.

I thought about that. But my experience with some Lenovo phones was that they perform much lower than their spec on paper! I don't know why.
Official support may be at an end but we still have CM based ROMs including MM.

I think the comparison is HTC M8 which will have marshmallow and better speakers, vs the G2 which will have a better camera. Either one at $150 or less is probably pretty good

as far as I know most of the Europe, Asian mobile isps use lte band 3 (1800mhz).. if your mobile isp is also using lte band 3, you won't be able to use 4g with d801. (but 3g/hspa+ should work fine. )
make sure you contact your mobile isp and get informed about the lte frequently that they're using..

no i woudlnt suggest you to get this one in 2016, the camera quality has considerably improved now a days in smartphones and since this is a 2013 manufactured smartphones, its aged enough, id suggest a nexus 6 ull get a 32gb for a similar price and youll be sure to get updates for the next 2-3 years (official/unofficial ) whats more important is android version, as we can see, feature set will be reduced anyways with aosp roms on the g2, might as well get a nexus 6 if youve got the money get the 6p , totally worth it

You are right about the updates and also I am a fan of pure android which is available on Nexus devices, however, right now the Nexus 6 is out of my budget, and the 5 has a weaker battery and camera than the G2.
BTW guys, I was thinking f sticking to KitKat if I buy it. but now that I have seen some reviews, looks like lollipop is closer to what I want the G2 to be. especially changing the recent apps button from long pressing home button to a dedicated button. Is android 5 buggy on G2?
@alecore: You said you had 5 on your G2 for a while. Was it performing well? In terms of speed and especially battery life I mean.
Recently my G2's display shattered. The cost of new display was close to that of phone itself. So I ordered D801 from eBay and kept my broken G2 aside. I have been suggesting my friends to go with G2 if they are looking for a budget phone. In comparison to Moto G 3rd Gen, G2 is available for lesser cost. It's a worthy investment. I am using it on Kitkat and had no issues. Battery and camera can still challenge today's mid-range smartphones so I highly recommend going with G2.

Battery it depends, on kernel and settings, i get SOT just whats app a few pics taken. like the most ive got it its 7hours and 32 mins. agressavely debloated. stock rom. on the g4 4uix i get 7 hours or nearly seven hours of screen on time.
jus just need to managed and clear recents and cache. and itll be fine. but on kernel settings i have intellimn governor. work queue. realxed memory ram setting. those gives more battery but suffers performance. but am on with it.

I just paid $130 for this phone with Cricket less than a month ago. What timing. : (
I heard comments that Cricket somehow screwed up some core functionality on this phone, like the any orientation call thing. Is there a way to get this onto whatever the stock Alcatel firmware is, and not the Cricket version? I've seen mentions of rooting and unlocking the bootloader for TWRP, so I'm thinking there is a way to just get as close to stock as you can on this, but it being Cricket after all, and some poor experience with the Moto G on Cricket, I'm expecting they somehow locked down all versions.

I'm on stock the way if came from cricket. I'm happy with it for the most part. It does have a notification widget and setting for the reverse phone thing, but I've ever turned it on as I deem it useless to me. I want to be holding the phone in the correct orientation. The phone does have an issue where the screen is way over sensitive and thinks you want a "tap" when you really want to "slide", but I don't think that is crickets fault. I don't know that the phone is worth $130. The only thing it has over my LG G Stylo (on Boost Mobile) is 2GB RAM/16GB ROM vs. 1GB RAM/8 GB ROM (and higher MP camera on idol 3, but had Marshmallow on Stylo). I expected better response with the 2GB RAM over the 1GB, but there is lag and stutters on this phone and I can't figure out why that would be. You'd think 2GB RAM would be plenty for any phone. However, for $80, it is definitely worth it! I just wish I could have got mine for that much. Don't know if I'd buy another Alcatel phone. I never heard of that brand until I got this one. I always had good luck with the mid-range priced LG phones.

I had the cricket version for about 4 months before it was stolen. Just replaced it with the 6045I global unlocked from Amazon for $199.00, and I must say that having both, and having paid $109.99 for the cricket version, you get what you pay for most definitely applies here. The only similarly between the two is the poor RAM management, which Marshmallow should hopefully fix. Cricket rep said that the hardware, firmware, and software were cricket specific, hence the low price and missing features. The global unlocked version came with the pre-marshmallow firmware, and latest security update out of the box. 2 very different phones. The tap to sleep and wake works flawlessly, among many other things. Just waiting for the ota marshmallow before I unlock and root the new one. Was running slim on the cricket with pretty good results, but I don't think that you can make the cricket version totally like the international. Good luck!

Good luck!

I'll have to disagree. Sure looks like the same hardware specs to me on the Alcatel site.

Yes they did the revisable calling doesn't work but when rooted and install the original Idol software it works fine.

Well you certainly can disagree, but firmware will enable or disable hardware..... And I had the cricket version and now the international, and upside down calling is disabled on cricket, among other things.

I don't much care about the reverse call thing. I would have it turned off if it did work. Useless for me as I want to be holding the phone in correct orientation - just my thing.
Do the Cricket issues go away if you unlock the phone?
I'm new to GSM - Can I take my Cricket SIM card and put it into any non-cricket GSM phone that Cricket supports and it will work?
I'd like to know the other things that don't work that the blame is attributed strictly to Cricket. (Maybe a year from now if I go to buy another phone I will better know what to look for - maybe buy an unlocked phone if it is not too much $ more. Probably not an Alcatel brand though.)
Thanks,

I've only had the unlocked international for 5 days, and I'm typing this from a hospital bed.... Just had surgery this morning. I will try to recall the differences : tap to wake and sleep works perfectly, it flies through boot(relatively speaking), the cricket version I would have to put in the freezer if I cleared caches and rebooted, it would get too hot to touch, random reboots even before rooting and on stock rooted, incompatible with apps and ROMS, and other stuff that I am probably forgetting. Unfortunately, cricket is cricket.... Unless you have an unlocked GSM device. My 6045I is using a cricket sim, and an AT&T apn. My speeds are not capped, and my data barely has moved. The international unlocked is $199 on amazon. Unlocking the cricket version to my knowledge will not change the basics of the firmware, but may allow you to flash different ROMS with different firmware if you use a different GSM sim. If the music isn't that important to you, the LG Stylo is a more solid device that has removable battery, better camera and screen, AND WAY better memory management. Just not cricket version. I have the T-Mobile version, and around here, neither they or Metro can keep them in Stock. Updated to Marshmallow immediately after powering on the first time. Good luck!
Is battery capacity only 2000 mAH ?
I bought this phone 2 days back fro Cricket.
I checked phones configuration everywhere and battery capacity on paper is shown to 2910 mAH. But when I used an app GO Battery Saver it shows real battery size is 2000 mAH. Can you guys check battery capacity for your phones. Is it 2910 or 2000 ??
Also double tap works for Cricket version too.

Can you check battery capacity for you phone using GO battery saver app or some app which can check battery capacity in mAH. I bought from cricket and this app shows capacity to be 2000 mAH opposed to 2910 mAH as advertised.

According to app AIDA64, report from android is 2000, and capacity from database is 2910 (!?!) on 6045I. My Cricket was stolen, but next time I am around a store, I will try to check out and post, if no one else has.I still get to bedtime with 4 hours plus SOT, AND 15-20 % battery, which is much better than Cricket. And that's pure stock. Not going to root or mod until after Marshmallow update.
Same result for cricket device.

Does any one know why there is difference between report from android and database for battery capacity ?

The double-tap on my cricket works too. However, after I reboot the phone, the double-tap no longer works - even though it is still turned on in settings. So I have to turn it off/on to get it to start working again. I think I have read somewhere else that this is a common issue.

One of the features that make this phone nice is it has microphones and speakers on EACH end which means having it "upside down" works the same as "normal" orientation. This becomes especially important in the car where you can drop the phone into a cup holder upside down and have the power cable connected at the "top" without having to worry about your plug getting mangled if it was sitting in normal fashion.
