Hi, i am new owner of Nexus 4 and there is one thing which is bothering me. Games are really running not as smooth as i expected from this hardware. I preformed clean install of a lot ROMs (Stock,PA,Rastapop, slimLP) and kernels (unleashed, franco,AK), i have tried overclocking CPU and GPU, changing governors to performance, flashing Adreno drivers from http://bit.ly/makostuff. Now i am running SimpleAOSP + AK Kernel .600 and what i found out is, that the gaming performance has not barely changed from stock, even if i overclocked to 1.9 GHz CPU and 487 GPU. Asphalt 8, Real Racing 3 and mainly GTA San Andreas are pretty laggy. GTA San Andreas is running better on friends old Galaxy S2 and LG L9 II.
Does anyone have any tips for gaming performance, some special rom-kernel combo, or some tweaks ? Or is this hardware really not that good for gaming ? Thanks for tips guys.

I used to play GTA vice city in my note 2 N7100. It was so smooth, now im playing the same game but it feels laggy. It looks like im playing below 30 fps.
I think its something with the game or driver issue. Anyone with same problem?

Haven't had any lag on a single game I have played myself, although GTA isn't one of them. Perhaps there is a compatibility issue. One thing is for sure, it isn't the I9505 being too slow.

This happens in many games. It shouldnt, but it does. And it is known and odd issue.
I play lot of 2D games like Hill climb racing, bubble shooter etc and those games used to play fine on last year's hardware. Even if we are talking about 1080P screens, these games play fine on Oppo Find 5 which has same GPU as ours and inferior Krait 200 CPU. And it plays those games fine. But microstutter is experienced on I9505 as well as HTC One. Both of them are using S600 chip.
A lot of tinkering and manual CPU frequency lock at max speed (manually or though setcpu profiles ) reduces the jitter and microstutter, but it does not still completely eliminates it.
Hell these games play fine on Mediatek MTK6589 SoC.
I am not able to solve this on my either S600 phones for over a month now.
It is not SGS4 exclusive issue. Either these games are not optimised for S600 or governors on these phones are not ramping up GPU clock when required or there is thermal throttling happening.

Try setting the GPU Governor to performance while you are playing to see if that solves the issue.

That is exactly what I do. In SetCPU I have created custom profiles for games.
It just reduces the jitter, does not eliminate it. Funny thing is, some more heavy games play just fine.
same issue
i have the same issue with vice city, on s3 it was so smooth and now i uninstalled the game because i dont like shuttering... it was lagging like hell nfs most wanted, carmageddon etc are working great.
What I have seen is that the SoC Heats up very quick and it begins to throttle down CPU and GPU frequencies to cool itself! Our phones should theoretically be 1.9GHz beasts and they are..... for 15 to 20secs! Then everything goes to hell as the CPU throttles down to 918MHz (GPU too goes down) and it actually becomes slower than last year's Phones!
I hate Mobile technologies! My Acer Iconia W700Pro behaves the same! It has an Intel Core i5 3317U CPU with an Intel 4000HD Graphics GPU and it should be able to play many games without problems but Because of throttling it is actually Slower than an i3 CPU if you rum longer tasks!
Somebody must begin thinking of new ways to cool these CPUs instead of ramping Up MHz just so manufacturers can brag about it!
That's why I keep my Note 2 (I sold my S4 already, mainly because of the pen)
It's very cool, no throlling in any case, perfect smooth with no lag at all. Stability test proved it the best also.
I don't know why reviewers and many people keep screwing about benchmark and raw power. They are BS and do not convert to the real experience.
Maybe because these games are not optimized for FHD resolution?
They play well on i9500. I really want octa but 4G is fast where I live.

Nope. If that was the case they would have problems with my i9500 or Oppo Find 5. They work fine on these.
9500 does not even get warm playing Hill climb racing.
This issue is specific to Snapdragon S600 powered phones.
From my Galaxy S4 Exynos, in your face.....
Should I exchange my i9505 for i9500 or wait for solution or software update that fixes this lag?
Have you activated the 4x MSAA under Developer options?
Many of my games started to lag quite alot after i enabled that. So i turned it off and every games runs buttery smooth.
Maybe if you make a profile to undervolt and underclock your phone, just to prevent it to get too warm, the the throttling won't underclock teh GPU because of war issues.
I just Undervolt 50mv on all frequencies and it seems fine on all games!

Interesting, can you please give some brief steps to achive it? Which app you use and setting etc. Are you sure, it works? For example, if you disable undervolt/underclock, some games start to lagg?
i have both GTA 3 and vice city aswell as modern combat 3 and 4, and all of them works fine on my S4, although i have the octacore i9500 version.
I have the i9500 version ( Octa ), and faces this problem a lot and also most of the times the phone gets hot and starts draining the battery too fast !! so it's not throttling at all with this temperature and battery drain !!
I had this problem with Note2 but not as much as S4 ( and without getting hot or eating the battery !! ).. the S4 sometimes gives me as low as 1FPS or less sometimes ( measuring by eye )

And do you notice overheating when playing? How bad is it? Can you compare it with your previous phone?
I have a i9505 and are not that butter smooth as on my old i9300. But then again after the latest MEA update it's better then before. Not perfect but its something. This sure means they can fix it over time. I did not own a i9300 for long but I assume at launch that phone had the same problems as this one. After a while with update the phone became smooth right?
About the heating issues. I don't really think its a problem. CPU and GPU will get hot while playing games like Modern Combat 4. The iPhone 5 also gets really hot so its nothing abnormal. Mine is getting hot while playing games but not concerning hot.

I use Ktoonsez Kernel. It comes with an app that lets you control all that.:good:
For how to install the kernel though, I'd rather not give any advice on that, because I have done quite a mess on my own device on my mistakes during the instalation. I never had any problems installing Kernels on my Galaxy S2, S3 and Note2, but on the S4 I'm still pretty inexperient.
On the Kernel and Roms foruns you will find plenty XDA users that can help you on the installing process sweetly though!
The mali 400 in sgs 2 is bound by it's vertex and triangle perfomance so newer vertex and triangle heavy games will not run smoothly on S2
here some list that i tested :
Real Boxing no full effect
Gangstar rio (effects disabled on android)
Gangstar vegas(need optimization, still quite playable on high)
Anomaly 2 (vertex and triangle heavy games low perfomance benchmark score test)
modern combat 4 (need compatible rom and kernel, playable on latest neatrom but still not smooth)
Tainted Keep
Horn ( SGS 3 and note 2 optimized, seriously???!! lag on my sgs 2)
Conduit HD (optimized tegra 3 vertex and triangle heavy, still very playable but not smooth)
The dark knight rises (little - mid Stuttering on some area, i wonder is there any android phone that run this game smoothly)
still our S2 can play 90% games smoothly on max setting, the best and cheapest android gaming phone to date
any info or tips to play those game smoothly... just post below

From what I understood mali was supposed to be marginally better
Well its true that our mali 400mp its OLD almost 3 years
But still can play games
And what the f*** intensive graphics games on a phone ...c'mon i dont think that someone have an s2 (and plays the dark knight rises,i played it too and arkham origins) and doesnt have at least a dual core pc with at least 2 gb ram
I play games like assasins creed 4 far cry3 and crysis 3 on my i7 4770k 16gb ram ddr3 2133mhz on 2 monitors using asus gtx 690 4gb ram at 1920x1080 for each monitor

Hey, BTW
Real Boxing was working with Tegra 3 graphics on my i9100
Gangster Vegas was working very good on High as well
Modern combat 4 works great
The dark knight rises works great as well
I haven't encountered any lags with those games
Even Dead trigger 2 performance on the s2 is acceptable with the high graphics enabled
NOTE : I am running stock cyanogenmod 10.2

I can pretty much confirm this on CM10.1, except maybe 'Real Boxing' haven't got around to ever playing it
all i can say that the galaxy s2 is always and will be a device that has its magic ... i tried the s4 and the note3 and all the galaxy new devices but the s2 has its ironic shape that most if us like and its performance is very very good and we are getting every single android version here thanks to xda alive members and its 4.3 inch screen which is to me the best in the business where its not small nor big :good: ...but all i hope is we can get an official kitkat or a new TW official rom newer than 4.1.2
CyanogenMod performance is much better than any touchwiz based rom, dorimanx kernel is awesome too but it's just part of your system not full system. I'm sure performance increase in games is also noticeable compared with samsung crap loaded roms. "Clean" android (aosp) is really clean. Only downside might been not perfect implementation of system parts that are only available for newer devices and these supported already by official updates to system base, so android 4.2.2, 4.3.1 and 4.4.1 is not perfect on s2 just because unofficial libraries still taken from 4.1.2 base. For example GTA III wasn't working on 4.3.1 but had no problems back with android 4.0.4... Compatiblity is random For FPS in games I'm still really happy we can at least run these games and as said before better get a PC if you want to play games, for price of today's high end phone you got great machine. S2 is enough for having a smooth android based device and for me that's a border where you need to think you need spend money on phone that won't be big change anyways or pc, console that will make real difference in gaming.
galaxy s2 is now like a midrange phone old gpu but still awesome

Try running these games on DorimanX Kernel with CPU and GPU OCed. Should stutter less:good: (I dont play too much games myself but from experience DorimanX kernel + OC = Best performance SII and ever provide)
so after reading a couple of posts i guess it all comes down to rom level. I myself personally have not had any good gaming performance on slimbean roms or either it doesn't work at all.

I haven't played the games you listed, but a week back I did install Injustice: Gods Among Us.
And I have not seen a single hiccup at all.
I'm running Stock 4.1.2, unrooted so obviously not overclocked either.
I'd say this is still a hell of a device..
Hi guys,
The king has not fallen yet.
Have you heared about PurePerformances X MOD? It does increase the phone performance without OC , someone told me he can play dead trigger 2 at max setting (playable)with this mod:good:,note:its flashable via CWM so flash this recovery first and the MOD.
Hope this helps

Hi, I'm new in this forum. I need help. I bought a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (SM-P900). I know it has two quadcores (one of 1.9 GHz and another of 1.3 GHz) but I think it only use one of them, because it lags a lot when I run games and another apps like chrome. Also when I run benchmarks, they only recognize the 1.9 GHz one. I tested Asphalt 8 and it runs at 20 fps or less. Also it lags when I pass pages in S Note. There's a way to speed up and take advantage of both CPUs? Thanks!
S Note always seems to lag (I don't use it, but others report it.) The app isn't optimized for 12.2". Try Lecture Notes.
Benchmarks see only one CPU because that's their limitation. They couldn't detect the second one even of it was running laps around the first.
Cores don't stack. So even if you have 4 1.9Ghz cores, it doesn't become 7.6Ghz. This is why the amount of Ghz matters so much for gaming and heavy apps. The Exynos is designed for multitasking, not heavy processing(games). That's what Snapdragon is for.
Next is the Mali GPU. It's weaker than the Adreno and doesn't handle 2K very well. Particularly in heavy games. Oh it does Candy Crush just fine , but it's like Intel HD vs Nvidia in terms of the more serious work.
If gaming was a priority, you should've gone for the P905 with the Snapdragon 800 & Adreno GPU.
You can try to get rid of most of the bloatware, that should at least speed it up a bit. Also replace the launcher with Nova or Apex, they use less system resources. (60MB RAM vs 800MB.) You can also try a factory reset, see if that helps.
Maybe someone else with a p900 can tell us if they, too, have the same framerate issue. (I've got the P905.)
The Note 3 N9005 and N900 editions have the same hardware as the P905 and P900 respectively. The N900 with the same Exynos/Mali has the same issues with lag in Gaming as the P900 does.
S Note can't be helped, that's Samsung's fault, bad coding.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 2
Root it and pick one of the stock based roms because they are the only ones with kernel development. I'm on CM 11 because I love aosp but I'm living with the built in kernel. That's the best you're going to get as far as I can see, but there are a lot of really smart folks around here.
Thanks for replying. Your answers helped me
Asphalt 8 has graphics settings where you can change the level of detail. Change the settings to low (which still looks good) and play is completely smooth.
Regarding optimizing general performance, I'd stick with Samsung stock roms as the gpu driver is better than cm based roms. Change the kernel and overclock the cpu and gpu to 2GHz and 667MHz respectively. Use the synapse app to undervolt the cpu and gpu at the highest frequency steps, necessary to avoid thermal limits which drops the clock speeds. With these settings I get 41000 on Antutu and 996/3000+ on Geekbench 3. Very smooth performance for my tablet.
hi guys new to the forum hope you can help..im about to buy the wifi version but because of the lag im tempted with the lte now..my question is a do a lot of art work .sketching etc and recently artrage was released for android..would you say the snapdragon would be better than the exynos version for brush lag etc .I cant seem to get a good answer to this question ..the note 12.2 is a great size and much lighter than a laptop and reat battery life..
sorry wrong forum

Hello Buddy! Glad to see you having interest in this awesome-crazy device.
Coming to your query, I'm flawlessly running them on max settings (My Sammy's rooted). The 8-core CPU is really powerful and the PowerVR GPU's benchmarks give awesome results not missing that device does have a very great development.
PS: Also consider LG G2 and Moto X2. But I consider i9500 to be the best overall if all departments are taken into account (Memory Card Slot, Development, Display, etc.)
Regards,
Paras Lehana
(I9500 running Ozcan ROM v6.3)
Yes I9500 is great. but gets really hot on some games.
Hi , i already brought the device the rom is stock Kitkat latest version
I tried Xcom enemy within 1.2.0 but the game is not smooth it's stutter
can you share your experience with xcom on your device? thx
Greetings.
I'm thinking of buying a new phone and it's either LG G2 or I9506 (It's S4 with 4G and snapdragon 800).
And from various benchmarks, futuremark's slingshot as an example, it beats even S5 and any 800 snapdragon device.
Is it really that fast in real life performance? I know that Samsung is cheating on bechmarks by overclocking CPU/GPU while benchmark is running.
So how does the I9506 perform in real life? How does it handle games?
I watched videos of LG G2 running games with FPS meter on and Asphalt 8 dropped below 30 constantly at max settings.
This is the video: https://youtu.be/2IOvC5NUng4?t=4m38s
It's been 1 year since the video so the game might have been optimized for quad cores since Gameloft is known to port games to android from iOS, so that means they don't use more than 2 cores. This was also present with GTA games.
Could anyone install an FPS meter and do an Asphalt 8 benchmark on their phone and compare if it runs better?
I'd be really grateful since this is going to be a huge purchase for me.

Somebody posted a similar question and posted benchmark examples that were done on android 4.2.
I played Asphalt 8 on my S4 GT-I9505. Seemed to run pretty smooth. And that was when underclocked to 1.2 GHz.
Samsung cheated on the GT-I9500 version. Benchmark apps used all cores instead of just 4. An app can;'t overclock without root permissions.
