[Q] Hard bricked G2 won't appear in /dev/sdb* on linux - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying this to fix a hard-bricked G2 I just recieved:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2582142
The device is in the following state:
No download mode
No recovery mode
Shows qhsusb_bulk in lsusb -v
I don't know much more about it (e.g. I don't know if it was rooted or what type of ROM was on it).
I need to unplug the battery by removing the back cover to have a chance to reboot it. The first boot after that it shows the LG logo, then a blank screen (back lit but no text).
(UPDATE: Pressing the power button 8 seconds also reboots the phone without having to unplug the battery).
When I wire it up to my Arch Linux computer here is what the command `dmesg` shows:
Code:

Is there anything that could be done to fix these Buffer I/O errors so I can mount the phone (and continue with the FIX tutorial posted above)?
Anyone able to shed some lights on the meaning of these lines would be of great help in my quest of learning how to unbrick my phone.
Note: when connected to the computer the blank screen goes in a repeating cycle of being back lit for 1 second then no backlights for 1 second. The cycle stops (with backlights) when unplugging the phone.

Hello. I've got exactly the same problem, how you already somehow solved the problem?

same problem on a lg device, any input is appreaciated.

[Q] Run 6.1.0-RC2-Aria ROM in SDK emulator ?

Hi all,
I have downloaded the 6.1.0-RC2-Aria ROM a couple of days ago, installed it on my phone and everything is working great - thanks again attn1!
Now I would like to do some testing/dev with it; instead of tampering with my device.
I created a NANdroid back-up and then tried running the ROM on the SDK emulator following threads instructions found over here and other forums, e.g. :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-572497.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=525930&page=2
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...p-and-running-a-full-rom-with-the-market-etc/
The emulator seems to be running OK, but the kernel gets stuck before it even gives me the boot animation. (- c.f. below for the parameters passed and the kernel boot log; adb logcat does not report anything at all -)
Anyone has been able to run this particular ROM on the SDK emulator or may give me pointers as to how to do so successfully?
Thank you.

LOL, root the emulated device!
I would if I knew how to do so on the emulator itself
I have rooted my actual device, but I have no idea how to accomplish this on the emulator; could you elaborate or send links on how to do this please?
I have googled and nothing relevant has showed up other than the emulator is supposed to be already root-ed; by issuing adb root I get:
C:\android-sdk\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb root
adbd is already running as root
I also tried running the emulator with the '-shell' parameter, but got the same result and the boot process gets stuck as well...
A little bit of extra guidance would be great.
Thank you.

Galaxy S UART JIG & Debugging Connector

After reading through some very interesting threads about the UART and JTAG interfaces on the Galaxy S phones, I decided to build my own JIG to trigger the various modes available.
However, I didn't want to mess with splicing different resistors in, and I don't like having lots of wires hanging about. So I decided to come up with a way to choose the mode by a switch, rather than switching out different cables or using breadboards.
The resulting design is:

Parts List:
4 resistors selected from the table at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275 (I chose 619K, 301K, 150K, and 121K).
A 4-position DIP Switch
A 2in x 3in ProtoBoard , drilled at .1in to solder everything onto.
A USB Breakout Board
A 5-pin Molex connector and plug, with wires.
An enclosure to hold it all in.
Some silicone bumpers for the enclosure.
Some standoffs and screws for mounting the board.
A Breakout Board for FT232RL USB to Serial to handle the TTL conversion.
NOTE:The FT232 adapter is upside down in the diagram, to get the pins lined up with the rest of the design.
You should insulate the FT232 from the rest of the board to avoid shorts. I used electrical tape.
The pictures below are from an old design that used the UartSBee converter. This part is unreasonably expensive for this project, shipping takes an extraordinary amount of time, and the vendor has very poor communication and customer support.
SparkFun, on the other hand, ships quickly and is very communicative. They also have a very cool IRC channel on Freenode and provide Eagle CAD libraries and drawings for many of their components.
Wow, that's pretty impressive.
I haven't had much time to work on this lately but I put my notes so far about the UART in this post.

Thank you! I must admit that I didn't read all the way through that thread.
Accessing the UART from userspace could be interesting, though.
Updated design. This one ought to allow all but 2 of the values listed in the table. The last two, 1000.07K and 1002K Ohms, require tolerances that are too tight to achieve without going to extraordinary expense.
I'm not especially worried about those 2, as they don't appear to be particularly interesting modes.

I have all of the parts for the first design except for the UartSBee now. Still waiting on shipping from Hong Kong for that.
Some preliminary pictures, snapped from my Epic:
Any luck with the project? You got communication?
I'm still waiting for the UartSBee component to arrive. I will probably redesign the board to use a different converter, since SeeedStudio doesn't seem to be a reliable vendor.
[EDIT:] Changed Image link to use a hosting service that doesn't use sessions.
Finally received the UartSBee today, and got it soldered in. Tests are successful, though not quite what I wanted. I can get some output at boot, and I can get into the SBL command interpreter, but there isn't a running log output from the phone. As soon as the kernel loads, the output ceases.

Starting kernel at 0x32000000...
OK, a couple of quick updates:
I updated the basic 4-resistor design to avoid using the UartSBee component. Please refer to the OP.
I also figured out how to get the kernel output over the serial console. Details below.
For the kernel output, you need to make a minor tweak to your kernel's initramfs:
Code:
diff --git a/initramfs/fota.rc b/initramfs/fota.rc
index 0339c46..fa17e00 100755
--- a/initramfs/fota.rc

- #write /sys/class/sec/switch/usb_sel PDA
+ write /sys/class/sec/switch/uart_sel PDA
+ write /sys/class/sec/switch/usb_sel PDA

on boot
+# Kernel moves UART control to MODEM during boot. Put it back to PDA so we can continue capturing log output.

+
# basic network init

diff --git a/initramfs/recovery.rc b/initramfs/recovery.rc

--- a/initramfs/recovery.rc
+++ b/initramfs/recovery.rc
(at)(at) -67,8 +67,8 (at)(at) on init
#chmod 0771 /dbdata

+ write /sys/class/sec/switch/uart_sel PDA
+ write /sys/class/sec/switch/usb_sel PDA
ifup lo

Compile that into a new kernel, or re-pack it into an existing one, and it should get you output like this:
Code:
Set cpu clk. from 400MHz to 800MHz.
OM=0x9, device=OnenandMux(Audi)
IROM e-fused version.

No need to modify the kernel.
On the captivate you can get into the SBL prompt, then type
Code:
printenv
setenv SWITCH_SEL 6543
printenv
saveenv
This changes the SWITCH_SEL value from 65 to 6543 and enables extra output. This will give you a short debug kernel output and drop you into a shell prompt .

Thanks! That's very good to know. Can't wait to try it.
I've been getting pms about this so ill post this video here
This should give you an idea of how to get the able prompt.
Could I use this method to debrick my galaxy? or would that require a different connection type?
Actually a nice job you´ve done so far
This project waked up my interest into looking deeper into the device.
This thread made the front page today. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/self-made-uart-jig-and-debugging-connector-for-sgs-i9000/

It probably depends on how the device was bricked.
From the descriptions of some of the modes in the driver header, it looks like you can supply a new image to flash. But I don't know exactly how to set that up.
It certainly is possible to force Download Mode and do some other trickery that might be used to restore a "bricked" device.
However, this is not a JTAG and can't be used to reprogram the OneNAND or anything advanced like that.
Do have a look at the original posts linked up top, they've done some more research since I originally read them and there's some really cool information there.
I'm very interested now. I bricked my captivate a few months back. I was in my early newbie stages of loading rooms. My jig won't even get to the download mode.
More research and now I have a cm7 thunderbolt. Lesson learned.
Yea I was thinking the same thing. I have experience with jtaging an Xbox and things like that. Will try
Another EE, finally, been doing software so long, and it really hertz.

Fantastic. I really hope that they respond, though my experience with Samsung so far doesn't leave me optimistic.

[Q] Heimdall i9500 can't flash recovery.

New, unlocked GS4 arrived today!
Can't flash recovery to get Samsung's $#!7 off of it...
I've rebooted to make sure that everything's using the right module(s), tried various usb2 and usb3 ports and cables(only have usb2 cables tho), and tried it on a different machine with the exact same results. I've used heimdall 1.4.1rc2 and from git.

Yes, I ran all that under root. I'm using Arch and did a full update before rebooting and trying this last time. Still no joy.
What did I miss?
The latest release is 1.4.0, not 1.4RC2. Please pull from Github, rebuild and see if you have different result with 1.4.0.

Internal memory not working: host doesn't support card's voltages

A friend of mine got a new tablet and gave me his older S7-105.
He tried to upgrade to android 4.2.2 and repartition internal sd to have more internal space, and somewhere in the process his internal sd card seems to be dead.
After a couple of days reading this and some other forums, I have finally been able to install PAC-man 23 JB 4.2.2 rom, but all without external sd card. I tried to access the internal sd card from all systems: 2.1-upd1, 2.2.2 and 4.2.2, but no success.
I have also tried downgrading and zeroing the mbr with dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
but it just creates a 204mb file in /dev/block/mmcblk0 as /dev/block/mmcblk0 doesn't exist.
Now I have PAC-man 23 JB 4.2.2, and I have manually installed parted binaries.
This is what I get in dmesg related with mmc.
Code:
~/data/berserker.android.apps.sshdroid/home $ dmesg|grep -i mmc

"host doesn't support card's voltages" seems to be the main error... this looks as a kernel config error.
My external 8gb SD card is properly detected (mmcblk1).
It has two partitions, mmcblk1 and mmcblk1, but app2sd is not working. /sd-ext is mounted. I'll have to study a bit more.

Could someone help me revive my internal sd?
I'm not sure but it might be a hardware problem.
It could also be some kernel problem, as I didn't see those mmc errors in dmesg with 2.1 or 2.2.2. (I coudn't access internal mmc anyway)
what other kernels can I try?
Thanks just for reading this long post!!
I'll need to install or build a kernel with CONFIG_MMC_DEBUG enabled to see what might be going on with more detail.
Which kernel sources and .config do you (devs) recomend to use for s7-105 on 4.2.2?
I just installed 2.1-upd1 from dload in external sd card.
After getting root and installling busybox and sshdroid I see the same error in dmesg:

host doesn't support card's voltages, same error than with 4.2.2
I have noticed that mmcblk0 and mmcblk1 are opposite than they were with 4.2.2!!!!
Maybe someone could post a full cwm backup of a clean 4.2.2 system with working internal and external sd?
I can create a ftp account to upload it to my cloud server, if needed.
I think there might be something wrong with some of my config files, which doesn't get overwritten when I flash a rom.
Some settings are kept, as language, so maybe the wrong partition information is passed from one installation to the other.
Contents of /system/etc/vold.conf are completely different in android 2.1, can someone post his /system/etc/vold.conf ?
This is mine:
Code:
# cat /system/etc/vold.conf | grep -v ^#

media_path /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host
media_type mmc
mount_point /sdcard2

}

It sure looks to be hardware related but hope I am wrong and you get your memory back!

Phone bricked - is this a hardware problem?

Hi,
my phone stopped working this morning pretty much out of the blue: It was working fine one moment but then switched off, even though the battery was practically full, and could not be turned on again.
I think it was stuck in a boot loop: It hung at the LG logo, the LED was alternating between blue and green, but nothing else happened. I also wasn't able to reach the recovery mode.
After some research I made it to download mode and tried to flash a stock ROM with LG Flash Tool - this had the effect that I now can't even go to download mode anymore.
When I plug the phone into my Linux laptop and run `dmesg` I get this output:

So, it does show up as QHSUSB__BULK but there also seem to be some I/O errors - is that fixable or did the phone just break after 3.5 years of constant usage?
hi there, unfortunately this is a known issue that sometimes happen with LG devices.. it happens to me too and I solved it (but I have other issues, too ): this tool could help you: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/development/tools-srk-tool-useful-toos-lg-root-twrp-t3079076 - only Windows btw.. but PLEASE before trying anything ask for details into the thread because you the tool we'll do invasive stuff on your device! there is no other way to fix so it's a bottleneck, I fear.. the tool itself works and it's safe as long as you know what you are doing, this is what I'm trying to say
