Just got my Gear VR. this is awesome! - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 General

I just received my Gear VR and have been playing with it for a couple hours. Man this is a cool set up, so awesome! I would recommend that anyone with a couple extra bucks, buy one! For 200 bucks is really a steal

How's movie watching on it? I don't game but the cinema idea is cool...

I get mine as well, right for Christmas. Movies looks very good. I put some 3d movies from my collection and they look good. Now we have to wait for Next generation Note with 4k screen and experience will be even better. I tried to put my feet on seat on front of me in cinema mode and I knocked coffe cup off my coffe table!

Wow I'm jealous, I didn't see an option to buy it on Samsungs website. Where did you buy it? The only thing holding me back is I read there isn't much to do on it. A couple of games, a lot of demos, and you can't watch things like Netflix or Hulu in the cinema. How is overheating and battery life? For the life of me I can't figure out why Samsung didn't allow a power cable to be connected.

Ordered mine last friday from samsung website.
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/wearable-tech/SM-R320NPWSXAR
I didnt play much games yet. Those 360 pictures and videos are so fascinating. Lack of charging cable is coming probably from lawyers being involved. Samsung recommends to use swivel chair to have full experience and charging cable would be choking hazard. I think is not going to be to difficult to make some piggy-back attachment fitted between battery and phone contacts. As for battery live - dont have it long enough to have opinion. I did reveive overheating message once. Now I'm running in powersaving mode and so far no warning messages and performance issues but I'm not sure if gear vr doesn't override powersaving (I didnt spend enought time to test).

Agreed, Its like watching movies in a theater and I just downloaded everything "I copied the Oculus files from the 16gb card to my 64gb card" so I have plenty of room. I put some of my movies in the proper file.
Really there is plenty to do and really I have been just enjoying the experience. As for battery life, I haven't had issues but again, I'm not sitting for hours on end, so that is the reason I haven't had any overheating issues.

I got it the first day. It is really amazing!!! Unfortunately, it is not working on the firekat ROM, I had to revert to rooted stock ROM for it to work.
I think it is the best purchase ever. I was thrilled to feel myself flying in sky, with those horses under me... How did they do it!!! Damn. I'm still thrilled every time I see it. Movie experience is beyond compare. Absolutely no words for it. Anyone who has not experienced gear vr, is missing on something huge!

Movies feel like you are sitting in a real movie theater. In front if an imax screen. It is amazing. The whole movie theater is empty, you can look around to see all the seats and all the tiny bit details of the theater. The screen is huge! You won't spend those 10 bucks on movies anymore.
Sux that you can't play YouTube directly, I had to download them using YouTube downloaded and then watch it.

Agreed on all points

So you were able to get it working with the stock rom then? I'm using my T-Mobile Note 4 on AT&T, unlocked. Had to flash Dr Ketan's (sp?) international rom ported to t-mobile for the VR to work right, and let me tell you I hate this rom. I tried flashing the latest stock rom from the dev section but it just detected it was a usb mouse and never triggered the VR stuff.

Apparently this guy got it working, check the thread below, he's using the AEL kernel and that seems to fix it. I just made a order for the VR set my self and can't wait to try it. Let me know if it works for you on v7 and AEL kernel, I believe thats what this guy might be using.

I'm also using a custom ROM (FireKatN4) just fine, although I had to flash a new kernel (N4 TMO AEL Kernel) to get it to work. Info is in the XDA FireKat thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note...emely-t2916463

I've got stock NK4 rooted, do I need to reflash the stock ROM or am I good to go the way I am? It's a Tmobile phone.

Just an FYI, I had a Deodexed stock rom flashed and it didn't work. I had to flash stock via Odin. All my user data was intact but any system modifications were removed (like modified launcher, etc). Had to reinstall them. Honestly, it wasn't that big of a hassle. Just flashed the custom recovery after the full Odin image. Make sure to back up before doing it, just in case. I also used titanium backup to backup apps in case.

That's a dirty flash. I did that as well the first day. Yes it works for you because you are going from stock to stock rom.
I moved from firekat to stock odin. Even that worked for me but there was a significant performance hit and lag. The best thing to do is to do a titanium backup of user apps, and Android id (this is pretty significant when changing phones, so that apps think they are still installed on same android phone where they were earlier, in certain cases it is very important to have same android id). Then factory reset, odin stock nk4 tar, root, custom recovery, restore android I'd through titanium and then apps.
Now plug the phone in vr and install vr apps.
I've tried all the custom roms and none work with vr yet. It appears that developers are removing an important file thinking it is a bloatware, but actually it is needed to run vr.

That sucks, thanks for the quick reply

Actually it's the kernels that give issue. If you use the ael kernel with dk4 it's good to go

Can't use it with Netflix, etc? Deal breaker.

No Flash from now on. Anyone else finding it an inconvenience on their 7?

Let's face it, no matter how much business you can make with your Nexus 7, a tablet is designed mainly for entertainment. A bigger screen usually means that we get to enjoy certain medias on a bigger screen, aka videos. However not every streaming website can afford or even cares enough to have fancy apps like Youtube and if you stream live channels online for emergency sports on your work computer you would know that flash still plays a part in our daily life.
As Adobe quits on Flash on our future Androids to get everyone into the HTML5 stage, PC users will still have a fairly high amount of data for grabs through Flash but our tablets will be losing that whole side of information while the transition goes through. Although I don't, but I could imagine my girlfriend playing an online Flash game on my 7 but it won't happen anymore.
and... we lose one thing to show-off to the iOS users...
How is everyone else coping with the fading of Flash on our mobile devices?

pretty easy to get flash..
First install the AOSP browser:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780746
After that, I still had some newer flash content saying it needed the latest flash player, so installed the two flash players from this thread:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...189897-no-flash-got-you-down-try-fix.html#anb
Works perfectly now!
Yeah I was bummed out when I first read that on Adobes web site. Yeah eventually most sites will hopefully change or add support for our tablets and phones to compensate foir Adobe doing that however being that we have the lovely OS that we do there are very easy workarounds! I installed the AOSP browser @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780746 and flash @ https://www.dropbox.com/s/cgsd3gyy7v6c90j/com.adobe.flashplayer-1.apk This is great too because I prefer the AOSP browser (I love the full screen mode with quick controls). The bookmarks don't sync though.. So I just kept the Chrome Bookmarks widget on my homescreen and set the default browser as Browser. Works like a charm!
I despise flash so I don't miss it on my device, at least not for anything important. Bring on HTML5!
yea everyone despises flash. high CPU usage low performance. but it has been playing such a big part in the past 10 years or so that it might just be TOO sudden a change when not everyone has gone to HTML5 and officially taken out flash as a whole. This might hurt Android as it is a crucial time Post-Jobs for android to have a major counter attack on iOS and an obvious visible advantage has been taken out.
I sideloaded flash & firefox for iplayer but other than that I haven't missed, the sooner flash dies the better.

got mine 2 weeks ago. It doesn't come prerooted. I flashed Finless 1.4 (4.2.2) and it is working great and stable. The flashing process is quite easy and straight forward. One negative point is (but this is the case for all RK3188 sticks) that the official stable XBMC 12 doesn't work. You need to use XBMC 13 which currently is at Alpha V7 stage and often crashes. Ohterwise very happy with the device

Have a question for you guys as reading how you too flashed bobs JB 4.2 ROM. As you know there are choices for space of the apps. 2,4,6 gb. I first tried the 4gb. But when I did. The box on that choice went from green to dark blue. Everything else remained green. Tried to flash and it got a error message. So flashed and just left that line alone with the default 2gb. This time it flashed no problem. But now I'm stuck with 2gb. So Gona refresh. Is it normal for that box to turn blue when you make the choice? If anyone knows..please inform me. TY.

AHH okayyyy, that's why then, for LARGE GAMES
if this is the case then you have to try DirectoryBind this app let's you move all the large data files of any game to the external sd card and fool the rom that these files are still on the internal memory. the app supports syncronisation of the files between the external and internal memory.
great tool, i use it and i love it.
but before you move the game data to the external sd card you have first to install and run everything on the internal.
anyway this is just a solution if you can't get the 6GB config.
why don't you flash the stock 4.1 rom, run it then flash Finless's ROM with the 6GB? i think this way you get the CX919 really FORMATTED
GOOD LUCK
So how do you guys like the CX-919?
After I have canceled my Ouya I am looking for alternatives
If you could share some information and experiences I would greatly appreciate it! :good:
Looking for stuff like boot time, lags in the OS, XBMC alpha, what setup are you using etc.

I finally got the 4gb . The directions tell you to reboot between wipe and flash. Ignored that. Did wipe. Chose 4gb. Color still changed from green to blue. But went with. Flash went ok. ROM is fine. Link2sd works. Might try directory bind if it does not cause issues with Link2sd. But DB sounds better for large games. Well time for some more testing. TY

I can tell you a little. I did not play around with the stock ROM to much. But I did flash finless 4.2. Had a little trouble with getting drivers installed. Seems that is normal deal. But it worked out. As for device. Its fast! I have not had any lockups or reboots. Video from USB thumb drive and SD card play fine. DLNA works surprisingly well. On this ROM. Netflix is not working. Crackle is not working. Real bummer. Most apps install fine and work. Buy seems like any apps that would turn it into a true smart tv device wont work. I already have a smart tv with these apps. So, that does not bother me to much. But if your going to use it for turning a tv into a smart tv. Well, Forget it. I may try the 4.1 Finless ROM. Read where people were saying these apps work on it? Will see. Anyway this is a fast great device and am having fun with games...

cx919 on stock vs Finless
I used it a bit with stock rom, now I am on Finless 1.4 (4.2.2) ..
- On stock my favorite Dice player didn't work (was showing "can't start video", even when u try to open it), some old Logitec USB camera was not detected by stick/skype, videos from external hdd plugged were playing ok.. Interesting that Antutu crashed during testing...
- Finless brought me really ugly splash screen, as well as old usb camera support in skype, which I tested and it worked pretty good during 45min conversation.. Dice player now works but in a funny way.. a bit slow.. (I saw decoding is done using software and didn't have time now to find option for hw decoding.. should be better).. It is nice that some crappy useless apps are gone, but on the other side developer added some "game mapper controler" and few other apps which are at least for me and for now useless (better would be to mention them in readme so user can download them)..This is about reboot app for example, which could be super usefull, except that it froze somehow my stick and I couldn't start it not even after hard reset.. Flash of Finless again boot it up again.. For SuperUser developer decided not to use the most popular and open source app, but at least in this rom there is root (Stock was pain in the ass to get the root, if u manage to get drivers work).. The biggest problems, however was very difficult mounting of external hdd and even usb. From USB I eventually was able to play videos, while HDD was "blinking" all the time, it even showed up in a list but when I tried to access it it was impossible.. I lost patience waiting, cause I know that on stock that was way much shorter then 3+ min I was waiting on Finless.. Beside this issues I noticed that sometimes mouse/pointer doesn't move and on stock that never happened.. Is that lockout or? This was really annoying, when u know it's quad core and on stock it worked good.. It happened that
All in all good work with some annoying issues which will hopefully be fixed with 1.5 .. Thanks to author.. Cheers

Well, I can't tell much about widgets because I'm not using any. I installed Nova launcher since the beginning.
USB sticks definitely work on mine. I am using ES Explorer and the stick gets mounted under USB0 so I only need to browse there to access it. My stick is plugged in the USB slot of my tv. I was surprised to see that the power it gets from the USb slot is enough but it works fine and is convenient because the stick starts automatically whenever I switch on my tv and turns off when I turn off the tv.
Mostly I am using the stick for watching life tv from the net (my desktop contains browser links, no widgets) or YouTube for the kids, or XBMC or watching movies which are stored on my pc

[Q] How do you keep yourself content with your Note 3?

Hey there.
So I honestly am pretty bored with the Note 3. Maybe it's because I've come from phones with ROMs out the rear end to flash or it could be where I don't do anything too special with my phone (homescreen setups, themes, etc).
I flash ROMs and all that, but I still find myself bored with the phone.
So I ask, if you were ever bored with your phone, without moving to a different device, how did you get yourself content with your device again?

To be content with my Note 3 first I had to be thankful I even own one. Just like anything I own. Be happy with what you got because some people are happy to just have water.
I had to work really hard to get anything I suppose just gives me a different perspective in things.

Nova Launcher helps break the stock monotony for me. I'm a serial rommer, so we'll see how long it takes me to get mad with not romming my Note. Lol

I am fairly content but am waiting for the note 4.

Continually checking to see if the bootloader has been unlocked so I can finally run cm11 on what should be a rocket ship of a phone but isn't. Because samsung.
Im content just to have such a bad ass phone that can haddle pretty much and app or game I throw at it. I had the Note 2 for a year and then i switched to the HTC One. It was an awesome phone with awesome sound but I missed the big screen. My note 3 is stock rooted and I love it. I install a new clock widget every now and then but my phone is mostly stock. All I need is Kit Kat.

Don't you mean "because Verizon"?
But yeah, other things that keep me content with my phone besides gaming is Xposed MODs, and SNote for keeping score for Spades in real life...making use of it as "useful" rather than "playful"
II picked up a dev edition in dec, Which I have replaced with a retail. I'm still learning how to best use all the features. Like i just learned how to use the Pen Window today.
I also found a Sansung translation app for written and speech. Was having a blast with this and a Spanish speaking friend. He was speaking to his relative that knew very little English. Well he would start speaking in Spanish to his relative then started steering the conversation to saying stuff about me. He signaled to start recording at one point. When his relative responded he signaled stop, then i played it back in English for me. Well i put on a "shocked face" at what was said, then preceded to record and "Angry" response back and have the translator cuse him out in Spanish. :highfive:
Vudu - Allows me to easily access and watch my collection if I happen to be stuck with nothing to do away. The larger screen also make it more enjoyable.
Music - I love the Adapt Sound. I believe also on the S4. It's basically a hearing test built into the phone, that adjusts the audio after it is complete specifically for your headset and ears. Makes my music on the phone a lot nicer to listen to. Also helps to have a large collection to rotate through.
Specific Apps
Remote control for LG TVs - I can control the TV using the phone and not have to reach for or look for the remote. Oh and it can take a snapshot of what's on the screen ATM. Great for sharing stuff with family & friends.
TiVo Remote - Manage most features of my TiVo without having to move into the menus on the TV.
Next launcher. Allows me to change the look occasionally.

Next launcher and xposed (with plenty of modules installed). Those two things combined offer so much customization your head will spin. With next launcher it's so easy to swap out different things... like change all folder icons, and then change the dock background.
I'm only rooted - still rockin the stock ROM and have no desire to flash a ROM.
I pick up my galaxy nexus and have to squint. This makes me run back to this phone.

While we do have some great devs on here, overall development is pretty thin with the locked bootloader. But what we have is pretty nice. Mix in xposed, a good home replacement launcher, and an icon pack or two... This phone is still pretty sweet.

Wifi tether

Ok so I'm tired of flashing ROM's and have home stock rooted on NC4. I really only do it so I can tether for free. So my question is how do I enable tether without getting the warning that I have to pay for it? I can't find entitlement check in settings database on sqlite. Please help. Thanks

The only method I know of is an Xposed module. I know for certain Wanam Xposed has the option to turn off tether provisioning. There seems to be a disconnect when rooting that causes 3rd party apps like what verizon requires to use hotspot/tethering. Many custom apps take care of the issue for us, but as for how to do this without either of the aforementioned solutions I do not know.

Thanks for trying. All of the ROM devs do it somehow. Even stripped down objective rom is able to do it. I was just wondering how? I made the big mistake of doing a full data wipe on the stock slot and bricked my phone big time. I had to Odin NC4 tar file to bring it back and now am 100% stock rooted and frankly becoming bored with flashing stuff. Almost ready to go to Crapple but there's no working around the tether provision on there I'm sure. I just can't seem to find anything to my liking.
Once again thanks you're the only one that's ever answered me after asking twice.

My pleasure.
Just taking a guess but I think it would be a build.prop edit.
I hear you about flashing roms, I have flashed many times. Of course along the way I have learned a lot, not enough to give in to the desire to learn how to dev yet, lmao. I also know the woes of the "OMG did I brick my phone?" But still I would never go to Apple. I really don't like proprietary companies, as Samsung has become a big one, I may never buy a Samsung again, however the great thing about Android is that we have choices, and as reluctant as I have been and even still am, as a consumer I have the choice to leave Verizon for someone how will give me the freedoms I believe I pay for. So far I just haven't been willing to sacrifice certain benefits, but as they become more and more outweighed by imposed restrictions, capitalism gives me the right to choose what who I give my money to.

I have no idea how to do build.prop edits. Really all I would like is a nice simple ROM with some light theming, "inverted theming actually", that I can add what I want. Objective ROM seems awesome but I can't seem to find a set of inverted apps to my liking. I ran Objective for one night went to bed @ 90% & woke up at 90% 7 hours later although at that point I didn't add anything to it. Really the only app I can't find inverted that will work is Gmail.
I really wish I knew how to do some of this stuff myself I'd make my own ROM but I haven't a clue.
Once again thanks.

I have the same desires for inverted apps, and of course the couple of people that actually work on themed Gapps seem to keep Gmail on the back burner. I used All Backs Black theme which covers most TW stuff (settings, dialer, mms). I was on Objective for a while but then I learned how to debloat myself because some things I wanted to use on Objective were broken because of everything that has been removed from that rom. What I've found is that with a good amount of debloating, battery life can be good on any rom. While never quite as good as on Objective, Eclipse and Alliance have both shown good battery length. For example yesterday after reflashing Alliance to fix something I broke, I started with around 60% at about 2pm, and put it on charge at around 20% at around 9pm. The entire time my screen was on and I was doing stuff on it. 7 hours of on screen time for 40% battery and all before the 48 hour period of rom settlement.
My standby battery drain is almost always as it was on Objective losing no more than 2% over an 8 hour period.

I also tried that All Backs Black theme (kudos to him). I also tried Eclipse (1st ROM I ever flashed on a phone, OG Moto Razr) but it doesn't come stock inverted for the most part and requires you to pay now to get the inverted theming (boo).
I just want something nice and simple like Objective and dark theming (only so it's easier to see when I'm driving especially at night, my eyes are very sensitive to light). I really don't use all of the cool features of this phone because I really only have it for it's screen size & being able to use the pen for swiping (typing). I'm a truck driver in case you can't tell & just need to stay connected while on the road. I've just recently starting using email to communicate with dispatch and the office so I don't need a whole lot of features on my phone. It's why I liked Objective so much.

Completely understandable. Good luck with your tethering situation.

Viper replacement for non rooted users

I spent a couple days testing out different equalizers as I wasn't satisfied with the built in one and spoiled by viper.
This is the best one I've found and I thought I'd share.
Equalizer and Bass Booster
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=music.bassbooster.equalizer
Music player of choice: black player, poweramp, stellio(best ui IMO)
Side note: Check out the Veva s220 headphones for better sound than beats and heavier bass!! They are cheap and the battery lasts longer than any Bluetooth headphones over ever had. Bose, Beats and others I've owned over the years don't come close. They're on Amazon.com.
Thanks for sharing! I'm rooted right now rocking Viper but very well may flash back to stock again soon. Gonna need something like this LOL

Rooted on Note7 or something else. Viper is literally the ONLY reason rooting matters to me.... I would kill for a non root fix.
I tried this and it is like the others for me. There just doesn't seem to be a replacement for Viper. All these EQ's do the same thing for me. If you turn up the base for example, it muffles or turns down the treble. It is like it is robbing from one to give to the other instead of just turning up the band you are trying to adjust.
Thanks for sharing though, the UI is nice and simple.
I just downloaded Poweramp Pro again and used it to play some saved music. Its EQ works like Viper and doesn't suffer from the same issue I talked about above. It will be great for saved music but I listen to a lot of streamed music from Google Play Music and some Pandora.

What's up @chipworkz.. last seen OK on the n5.
Hope life has been treating you well.
I agree after using my n7, viper is truly a need for this phone. And the play sound from the earpiece mod that @SashhaFranko made. I am hoping a more stable method of root is achieved, seems buggy for now. Check ya later.

Rooted on Note 7. Using the leaked Sprint firmware. It's not that bad really. No WiFi Calling or VoLTE (can live without personally). And of course no Samsung Pay or Android Pay. Everything else seems pretty decent thus far.

Do you have to do any modifications to keep the phone running smooth? Like the S7 edge. Phone would get locked into a bootloop every week or 2

Hard to say. Only been running that leaked firmware since Saturday night but it's been pretty stable/smooth for me thus far. I never had an S7 or S7 Edge but from what I'm reading this leak/root is better than what they were facing.
First let me say there is currently no replacement for Viper for non root devices. Nothing comes close. It's the only reason I've rooted after the Note 2. Would be great if Google purchased them and applied Viper directly to Android.
I prefer a EQ app that can be used for ALL sound sources that can be played by Android. To that end, I've used Equalizer for those times when I couldn't install Viper.
Im using the alpha version of poweramp with 24 bit enabled sounds like viper too when activated

That app just uses the built in eq, adding some presets to it. Unfortunately there is no replacement for Viper.

Sorry to be off-topic but quick question. Can you root to do modification to the system (edit host file for ad-blocking, edit CSC to enable features, edit media folder to delete tmobile boot and samsung smileys) then unroot and keep Samsung Pay and volte wifi calling etc?
