Need help with nexus 7 issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 2012 Nexus 7 32gb I got about 3 years ago. Everything about it in pristine condition. Never replaced a thing on it, even has the same screen protector I got when I bought the tablet. However, I am plagued with a few issues.
The first being performance is horrible compared to when I bought it. Constantly choppy animations, input delay. It takes almost a full 2 or 3 seconds for multitasking to come up, and even longer when launching apps sometimes (*cough* youtube).
The second issues I have is battery time. I can fully charge it and leave it at home all day, untouched, and it will die by the end of the day with literally no use.
The reason I say I have these issues is because there is literally not a single third party app installed. I've reflashed it multiple times to all sorts of android versions, custom roms, and I even have 5.0.2 on it right now. I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Please give me some ideas.

Some people are formating there partions different. Can't remember the letters. Sorry, 5.0.2 really helped the lag for me.

[Q] So how is the device by default?

I really wanted to get a Droid Pro, the device to me seemed perfect the way it was out of the box.
I currently have an Xperia X1, nice device but I had to run a custom ROM to get the experience I wanted. And I didnt find the right one until a few months ago (2 years searching...). And even the ROM I'm using isnt 100% reliable.
Now I'm looking around these boards and I see people looking for upgrades. Is the original experience that bad? is it slow? Does it crash? Etc. I'd like to know because if I get this device then I'll want to use the official upgrade but nothing else.
I guess it depends on what you are used to.
For me it seems that overall the use is fine. Especially since I froze a few unneeded apps.
But the battery life is horrendous. Ill eventually buy an extended battery because I hear good things about it but stock is horrible.
As for the pro itself, I can't complain really. But this is my first droid so I have nothing to compare to.
I had simply hoped I could customize a bit more.
In general I am not noticing any unresponsiveness since I froze some apps, added apps to the auto end list and started using a cache cleaner.
My only complaint is the battery, but that complaint is a big one.
In battery saver mode, using hardly any apps and making 15 minutes worth of calls lasts me 10 hours max.
Standby time of 13 days my @$$...

What about your data connection, is it on all the time? I can't imagine a new device having a worse battery then my 2 year old Xperia (which doesn't even have the greatest battery in the world, and it has a higher res screen as well).
But apart from the battery life your happy with the default device? Calling, text messaging, browsing, it's all snappy?
Battery life would be my only complaint as well, too. Other than that, I love the thing. Even without any customization, it was fast.
I do wish developers would pay more attention to it, but everybody wants the teeny bopper phones these days, so I can't blame them for favoring that crowd.

Yeah 3G is always running, though in maximum battery saver mode it should shut down any data reception 15 minutes after the screen blacks out.
Come to think of it, perhaps it doesn't and this is my issue...hmm...
I have to hand it to Motorola though, 2 weeks after I got the Pro I chatted with their support to check for a solution, and they were kind enough to send me a battery free of charge. Stock battery, but still, I now have an extra battery in case I need it.
Anyway, yeah everything is snappy. I am not dropping calls, browsing is excellent (I use Dolphin HD for the tabs and addons) and text-ing works great.
I use Handcent for txt so I could set a different tone for some of my contacts.
I did have an issue with losing phone numbers, but I'm not sure what the cause is of that. Perhaps it's something I did myself.
But When I got the phone I connected to my old phone through bluetooth to get all my contacts, I then connected and synced to facebook so all contacts were linked to FB as well.
Somewhere along the line after wards I lost all my phone numbers and all I had left was the info from my FB friends.
Like I said I don't know what caused it and so I'm not sure if I can prevent it from happening again.
This may be something for you to look out for.
You know, it would seem I'm not that happy with my Pro, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
For one, I love Droid and everything that comes with it. Apps, widgets, games, browsing, everything.
Two, I got my pro for free since I went through Target.
Three, every phone has it's flaws. I can not imagine anyone not having at least 1 rather big complaint about their phone.
They simply take it as it is because they know it is not really a big deal in the long run.
I really wanted the Droid 2, but it was expensive for me. But I have no doubt that I would have a complaint about that phone as well.
So yeah, I am happy with my Pro.
I know every phone has its issues. But freezes and lots of slow downs are issues too great to have, in those cases I rather have another, more reliable, phone (I know they are out there, like my old Motorola KRZR).
Naturally smartphones are more complex then regular phones so more issues are to be expected but the problems I've had with the Xperia are some I don't want to repeat. Important phone calls that were cut when the phone freezed and text messages that took forever to sent because the phone had another slow down.
Seems the Droid pro is better then that, otherwise you couldn't be THAT happy with it. I'll have to look for a good importer though, I live in Europe. Netherlands to be precise, so being helped by a dutchbastard is always nice
Oh but I live in new York so I am of little help to you.
But yeah you are right. Problems like freezes are not the type of issue one can live with.
At first when I got my pro I got app after app and about a week in I had issues with slow desktop scrolling.
Then as I said I froze some apps and added all the non important ones to the auto end list and haven't had a problem since.
Do keep in mind that I've only had my phone for about 6 weeks now.
But I like it a lot. Initially I wanted the droid 2, but couldn't afford it.
At this point I think the only thing the druid 2 can offer me is a better keyboard layout wise.
But this thing does everything I wanted and more.

I have a Droid Pro and I LOVE it. It's completely turned me on to the Android world.
I'll second the extended battery. I had trouble making it through a day on the stock battery, with extended I'm usually at about 30-40% by the end of the day.
I actually prefer to use the Droid Pro stock. Obviously there are advantages to to rooting. My main reason for rooting my inc, fascinate, D2, any phone I had really were the roms, wifi tether, etc. The advantages obviously outweigh the disadvantages but developers obviously aren't working with the Pro a ton so I havent needed the wifi tether, you can delete the bloatware and I did with my X and my D2 but I like using the Pro stock. It runs fine, Really, just my opinion.

hi mate,
Hope you are right ... with stock battery cant last more than 6/7 hrs...with screen to autobr., killing all apps after screen out, nothing running appart from sync services for my mails, weather, facebook and twiter....nothing else, no calls, no msgs,no inet, no music , ...nothing and with that last only6/7 hrs......
so I really hope that extended battery that I ordered will fix my problem,,, I am happy to charge the device every night as long as it last trough the day and days are long- 15/16 hrs...
if leave this aside I love the device even the stock software is not to bad...
just really hope that the extended battery will make it happen ....if not ... I will sell it...((

Random power-offs

Not sure if this is for the QnA section...anyway, yesterday I got a Nexus 7 2012 16GB for my Nexus device collection (used). It was rooted when I got it, with a whole bunch of junk of it, so I used Nexus Root Toolkit and restored it to stock 5.1 (from rooted stock 5.0.2).
Last night however, I noticed two things that seem weird:
- the battery charges really slow compared to my other devices (5 hours for full recharge) and drains quite fast when playing games (compared to the 2013 N7), namely Zombie Driver THD
- self-power off during night charge
While the first one seems normal (it IS used after all so not expecting perfect battery life here), the second one makes me worry a bit. I'm at work so not sure if the issue will repeat, but the battery was certainly not dead when I plugged it to recharge but the tablet was switched off in the morning. Using the original N7 2012 charger by the way.
Any chance this can be ROM-related or is there any known problems like this?
I have had a 2012 N7 in the past but in Android 4.4.4 I didn't have the self power-off problem, maybe a 5.X bug?

Takes me 4 hours at max to charge it from 0 to 100
How much does it last on gaming? I can play heavy games for 1.5 to 2 hours, thats about it. No kernel/rom has given me more than that. It's tegra 3, don't expect much from it.
Some users have reported that bug on 5.1 I however did not encounter it. Although I used 5.1 for just about a day and came back to 5.0.x for xposed

I just came back from work (roughly 13 hours away), the battery seems to be at 97% (no WiFi on) and the tablet was not turned off.
Guess I'll monitor it for a while longer, though knowing how much I plan to use it, it might take a couple of days before I drain it enough to warrant a recharge so that I can test to see if the charging turns it off.
So I thought the issue fixed itself, but last night I found out more about it.
So I haven't used it for about a week or so, it was fully turned off with a charged battery. When I tried to turn it on, it wouldn't work even after multiple tries. So I thought maybe the battery is screwed, so I plugged it in the wall, but no battery charge indicator showed up. I waited a couple of minutes and tried to turn it on but it didn't work, so I left it there "charging". About an hour later I tried it again and it worked, battery was at 100%, so I left it on overnight and it hasn't powered off on it's own.
Anyone can advise on this? I'd just go ahead and re-sell this one, but it's in great condition so I'd prefer to keep it if it's fixable.
I've had a few random power offs or maybe lockups on 5.1? Not sure entirely if it was powered off or locked up, I'm running Complete stock unrooted

Complete stock here as well.
I decided to downgrade it to 4.4.4, we'll see if that fixes it (I'll report back when I believe I tested it enough unless someone gives a known solution or suggestion).
I think you should try installing a new battery if KitKat doesn't fix it.

[Q] Why the HELL is the Nexus 4 so BUGGY?!?!?!

What the hell is wrong with the Nexus 4? I thought it was Google's eldest son and would care to treat it to a few bug fixes once in a while. And stock Android? Biggest joke ever in the history of man. My bloated AT&T Galaxy S4 was 100x more stable than this piece of junk. Ever since I got my phone in August, the Nexus 4 is STRIFE with bugs. I can't remember the last time I used the phone without a major bug happening in a day.
-Randomly shuts off. This is F*CKING huge. I will press the right button to turn off the screen, and it won't turn on again. I have to hold the button for like a minute straight to restart the phone. What the hell is up with this?????
-CALLING DOES NOT WORK? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A PHONE IF YOU CAN'T MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS? I HAVE RUN INTO THIS PROBLEM ALMOST EVERY TIME I RECEIVE A CALL. I have to restart the phone, wait for 2 minutes, then call back the person. This is EXTREMELY frustrating.
-The Youtube app works like 20% of the time. I am not even kidding. I expect the app to malfunction than work. It will spin on forever or it will give an error. And no, don't ****ing tell me to restart the phone. I'm not doing that for a video.
-I have a screen lock and I can reply to text messages without unlocking the phone. What the hell is the purpose of a screen lock if I don't have to input that in?
-The battery percentage is completely off half the time. Sometimes it goes 0-100% charge in like 2 hours and sometimes it takes 5 hours. The longer it takes, the longer the battery lasts. This is so frustrating when I have to go somewhere and my battery is 20% at noon.
-The wifi won't connect sometimes and the data won't turn on even if I have full bars. I would have to wait like 15 minutes for the data to turn on.
There is literally so many bugs, I can't remember them all right now. Stock Android my ass. Someone please direct me to a bloated ROM that is stable than this hunk-o-junk.
Do you feel good screaming at nobody? Got it off your chest now. Your phone has obviously seen better days, if your that unhappy with it then don't continue to use it. My nexus 4 still runs like dream no matter what version of android I'm on. The only bugs my device has either comes with stock Google issues or custom ROM bugs. Most bugs are from dirty flashing over and over I'm sure you know that. Wi-Fi bugs would be kernel related if not hardware, your battery sounds like it's gonna catch fire soon. I can't stress enough that these issues your having require your investigating to localize wtf is going on. I hope I've helped.
You bought a phone nearly 2 years after it was released? Was it new, or did you buy it second hand? What version of Android are you running? Are you rooted? Are you running Xposed or other mods? Custom kernel? What have you or the previous owner done with it? Have you done a factory reset?
Cuz mine is 2 and a half years old, and apart from the charging port being a bit touchy with a worn power cord, it's fast and stable.
I mean, if you're looking for a solution to problems, you have to tell us what's going on. Otherwise, you just look like a fool that likes to complain about crap that nobody else (for some reason) is experiencing.
Nope... My wife's been using her N4 for two and a half years and haven't experienced any of those.
Sounds like you have a faulty device, sorry.
seems like your current device has some issues, in general nexus4 very good and fast device
The nexus 4 is not buggy. You bought a broken phone that powers off and your screaming that the phone is buggy? Use your head.

It doesn't mean the majority of people are having issues. Did you not notice that there are still lots of people on these forums that aren't complaining of such problems? I wouldn't put up with random shut downs, so if mine ever did that, I'd be done with it.

The random shut downs are annoying.. Although you'll probably find it hasn't shut down.. If it's anything like mine it will be on, but won't turn the screen in no matter what you try.
Try plugging it into a PC next time it does it.. 90% of the time it will be recognised, you can even get minimal log cat messages.. But nothing I have tried will awaken it.
Mine didn't do it from new but it's getting worse now.. Nothing seems to fix it, have reflashed many times.
The other problems aren't common on the nexus 4, but I've seen the shutdown one on a few different devices now. It's certainly not even close to all of them, but enough are starting to do it.
Sounds like you have something wrong, I am running 5.1.1 rooted, with the LTE hack, and it is fast and stable. No random reboots. You might try running a logcat and see what the issue may be. Clearly you are not looking for help, as you provide no information or detail as to your handset or specifics on the issues you are seeing. Do you feel better to vent? I would put my N4 up against any other handset, even 2 years later.
Let him scream to himself. Useless thread, it has no purpose but relieving his feelings. Here is not the place for that.
I can recreate a lot of issues OP mentioned. I also have the random shutdowns, enormous battery drains, no sound in calls, etc.. I got my phone on day 1 and it seems that these bugs get worse lately.. Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy a new phone right now, so I'll have to just live with it.. I spent countless hours trying out fixes but nothing really worked permanently..
Could all of this have to do with production batches or hardware revs? Mine is a rev11 bought new in Sep 2013, I never experienced any of these bugs (except for the sleep-of-death which I've only come across twice on KK, so not a reoccurring condition). Ironical that you haven't mentioned the ONLY widely acknowledged bug affecting the n4 (which 5.1 seems to have finally solved): the infamous camera reboot. Only Lollipop helped for me; as long as I was stuck with KK it was a feckin nightmare!
Sorry for the poem, just giving my 2 cents about what's an acknowledged bug and what is not.

Logs are free if you want some help. Could be the hardware, but without knowing details impossible to say.
I had the camera reboot once in the 7 months I've owned this phone. Happened when I went to take a picture in a message I was sending directly, which I dont do very often. That's the only reboot or crash I can remember ever happening to this phone. Nothing like my sisters s3 that freezes almost every day since she got it apparently.

Why does my galaxy s7 edge lag after reboot?

T his is something I have been dealing with for 3 months and I'm fed up...
About once every week or two, I turn off my device for a few hours to give it a rest. However, every... single... time I power on or reboot my device, my phone greats me with SIGNIFICANT amounts of lag just after boot.
Eventually in a few hours everything runs smooth, but when I boot or reboot my device will lag behind nearly 500 to 3000 milliseconds.
Just now I pressed my power key and it took my phone nearly 10 whole seconds to turn off or react to any hardware keys. And I'm just coming off smart switch so I have no installed apps. So I'm as clean as stock, but I've still had issues like this since day1
Does anyone hear have any earthly idea why my s7 lags for hours if I reboot/boot?
What kind of SD card do you have? I used an old one when I got the S7 and it lagged horribly, overheated etc. As soon as I took it out it was better.

Samsung Evo 64GB, Read 30MB/s, write 18MB/s. Its nothing fancy but it is just a tier above standard Class 10 speed. It shouldn't be a hindrance to my performance.
Try clearing the system cache?
The cache thing may work. It also has to do with how many apps run at startup and how much ram those apps use. In my experience, that has the biggest effect.

Help: Bought used HTC 10, it started randomly reboot, now stuck in bootloop, stock sw

I guess Santa gave me a lump of coal this Xmas... I finally treated myself to an upgrade from my trusty One M7 and got an used S-offed HTC 10 from Swappa. Yeah I know... as a poor grad student, funding is pretty damn tight.
The phone is in good physical shape - no obvious signs of abuse. However, in the first week of use, I experienced a couple random reboots, and the phone itself was getting hot (>40 degrees C) while just texting and on wifi, with airplane mode on. Battery life with that usage pattern and load was maybe 1.5 hours screen on time. Deep down I knew something felt off, as that's WORSE battery life than my 4+ year old One M7. But I thought hey, it's a used phone. I was planning to flash TWRP and custom roms on there, maybe the debloated roms will help.
When I finally was able to flash TWRP and Santod's debloated stock rom, it was okay. Still some random reboots, but I loved the new phone so much, I was okay with it.
Until it got worse and worse. To the point where unlocking the phone will make it freeze, then reboot. At first, it was when the battery was low, like 40%. Then gradually it started freezing and rebooting at higher %, until it started doing it with a full battery.
Fast forward to just before Xmas - the phone is unusable. It will reboot show the white HTC boot screen, then black out, and start again. Bootloop forever. All while plugged in. I noticed the charge light isn't on even when plugged in, I guess during the initial seconds of booting up, it relies on battery power alone? Such a bad design if true
I've had to leave it overnight. I would wake up to a seemingly dead phone. I'll plug it in, and it would show the charge screen. If I turn it on then, it would go into bootloop. It won't even make it into recovery, stock or TWRP when I had it. If I let it charge until the charge light is green, it MIGHT boot into the welcome screen. It'll freeze up after a few taps, then back to bootloop.
My best guess is the previous owner abused the battery so bad that the cell is completely ****ed. I regret that I forgot to ask about the battery life before I made the purchase - I was just too excited about getting an upgrade from my M7 As of now, I am back to my trusty M7, which although slow and janky, it's 100% stable and still has usable battery life.
I paid $200 for the HTC 10, which might not be a lot of money to some, but it is to a struggling grad student like me. The phone is nothing but an expensive paper weight right now. And I never got to enjoy it Has anyone experienced similar problems with their 10? I am so angry and sad...
Roughly the same thing happened to a friend, we got our 10's at right around launch. We had similar battery usage, we both played a lot of Pokemon Go which is hard on the battery. Mine has been running custom ROM's as far back as when Sunshine was still mail in, his is purely stock S-on. His started doing the same thing as what you are describing a couple months ago, we even tried a RUU and while that helped for awhile he traded it in asap for a Pixel 2. There are a few reports of this going around, not sure if it had to do with a recent update from Verizon that borked something or if it's a hardware flaw, either way you are probably better off trying to get your money back or trading it in to HTC of Verizon for something newer
