[Q] Changing app on scrolling left - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm finally back to Android after a long lost journey involving a LG 4XHD (which made me depart android) , a Blackberry and a Windows phone.
Now that I'm back on the note 4, with the lollipop update, I want to ask a question. You know on the touchwiz, if you scroll to the extreme left, you'll bring up a screen with updates from news from Flipboard, even you're using the Google skin, you'll bring up Google Now.
As I am living in NZ, Google Now is kinda useless outside America tbh. Is there away to customize what app you get when you scroll to the extreme left? ( what do you even call that ? an app? skin customization? Dont really know what its being call hence Im asking here
Thanks in advance

Issues with 2.1...

Sorry in advance if these have already been pointed out and/or fixed.
I'm aware that this is a leaked beta but i'm having some strange issues.
Mainly being the market not downloading apps. I can browse the internet, browse the market, but nothing will download.
Anyone know of a way to fix this?
Also, i was quite disappointed with the fact that they did next to nothing to the absolutely terrible camera. The shutter speed appears to have improved *slightly* but pictures are still far too sharp and over saturated.
On the other hand, i do like the 720p filming
Another thing i noticed is that interacting with the live wallpapers is way off. When you press the 'Nexus' live wallpaper, the actual 'hit' is almost an inch out. Not a huge deal, just something that's annoying me.
On the plus side, the live wallpapers are incredibly smooth. A lot smoother than on my Nexus, god knows how dell managed that!
But my main hate, the one that annoys me to no end, is that you can now only have 6 icons in landscape. Wtf was the point in that dell? You took the best thing about this phone and made it worse!
Apart from alllll those things, i'm absolutely loving the 2.1 update (especially the dialler) but because of the above mentioned things i'm getting tempted to go back to 1.6. I need to download things dammit!
Another 2 issues that bothered me were the crap keyboard which is VERY slow and if you rush it you get mistypes, sometimes I have to press the same button twice as it did nothing the first time and I get a spelling mistake in every word, the keyboard is messed up.
Anyway to get the superior keyboard from the previous 1.6 with the lovely numpad?
Secondly, there are some problems with the wallpaper/homescreens. There is no way to add or remove them, seems I'm stuck with 6.
I tried to set a simple wallpaper on say screen one and it stretches right outside the screen and fills all 6 screens up, why??!!
I am using the same wallpapers before that are specially for the streak and are set at 800X480 and it stretches one pic across all screeens and it looks distorted, why?
Before I upgraded, I could go to screen one, put a wallpaper, it would fit fine and only in one screen, not fill the other ones too.
Can ANYONE think why this is or even a fix to this problem?
At the moment I have more problems with 2.1 than 1.6...
Glad to see I'm not the only one with these issues. I can't stand the new keyboard, driving me mad but I'll survive. I don't like the new layout of the icons and the fact you can no longer have multiple backgrounds is a shame. Also I've noticed certain widgets just won't sit in the centre of the home screens any more.
I'm hoping because this is a leak that Dell haven't added their personal touches yet and that this will come when they go official otherwise I'll be a sad panda!

Yeah, I guess we have to stick with what we have until it's officially released.
At least we have SOME improvements...
The portions you mention I have not had. It sounds like you have a few issues with your install.
With regards to we everthing else, 2.1 ain't perfect but its a tonne better than the 1.6

Of course by portions I mean problems....the swype keyboard although better its still far from perfect

These issues may go away when the final 2.1 is released
clear the dalvik cache, that sorted the marketplace for me
Hi Meltus
If your Google E-Mail account is Googlemail change it to gmail by logging in through your computer and use the option to change it to a gmail address and that has fixed the Market problems for me and some others hope it works for you.
Marc
Any one else having issues that when talking on the phone with headphones in if you press the lock button it hangs up the call? Found something that drives me even more mad than the keyboard lol.
Not sure what I am doing wrong , but I can't seem to use any 3rd party keyboards ? They install OK , I can select them , but then when I go to use them , the Dell one pops up. (Any ideas ? )
The only issue I noticed , is that the Sleep/wake button stops working properly occasionally , instead of putting the device to sleep , it dims the screen , but the screen stays on ,
Not sure what is going on here , I think the phone may "think" its asleep , as the live wallpaper stops moving , but the screen is definately still awake.
The only way out is to reboot by taking the battery cover off !
Seems an isolated problem I don't have any problem downloading just that some games wont work - more importantly launcherpro looks very strange with tiny icons! Spread a across the screen with Hugh gaps.
kenmckean
i have had EVERY issue above! its beta so im not going to complain but i just hope its much better once the ota arrives

However, I do believe if you change to Gmail from Googlemaill, any apps you bought with your Googlemail account are NOT carried over.
Hence you have to purchase again, this is why I haven't made the switch yet, until that issue is resolved I will be staying as Googlemail.

Exactly the same problem here.
And to change keyboards, you select it and long press a text box (like in messages) then you pick the keyboard you want from there.
Anyway, i fixed my market problem by changing my e-mail from 'googlemail' to 'gmail' (thanks doggman) and then wiping the phone. Not sure which made it work, or whether it was a combination of both, but it's working good now
Issues I've noticed so far: (Maybe nitpicking but I'm comparing it to all my other Androids)
- Live Wallpaper could be smoother. It's pretty smooth but on such a large screen, little glitches are very noticeable.
- Though the keyboard is a lot more comfortable to use without the numpad throwing the right thumb off, the responsiveness is gone from the previous keyboard. But I'm sticking with it cause its alot better looking than 'Better Keyboard' or 'Smart Keyboard'
- No pinch-to-zoom on pictures in the gallery...very disappointing
- Pinch-to-zoom for maps is there, but responsiveness needs work. Almost as bad as Blackberry Torch's pinch-to-zoom. HAHAHA
- Photos seem more saturated than when it was running 1.6. Even affects photos when being used as 'Picture Frame' widget.
- Aside from the saturation of pictures though, the screen display overall is impressive. Quality has improved, sharpness has improved, the HD-feel is there for the home screens. I could even say that it is comparable to the iPhone 4, and better than the Galaxy S display. Theres room for improvements though... better font for icon titles, increase sharpness, less colour overflow.

it did for me, but others claim it doesnt work..
I already signed in with a gmail account and found apps were missing, so I read up on it and several people said to clear the dalvik cache, so I did and the apps came back..
yeah you need root, the universal one click root thing is so easy to do and undo that its fairly painfree...

complete noob !!

hi, firstly may i say im sorry for asking these questions as to you guys they will sound so stupid !!! after giving up my trusty se k800i after many years & pressure of the grandkids to move with the times i now have a htc wildfire ( didnt even know who htc were untill now !) although i seem to be getting to grips with it ( well kinda lol ) i am quite dissapointed that there wasnt a better instruction manual in the pack, i only got a quick start guide, so these are the things i would like to know
text message- how do i forward a recieved message? i cant find the option anywhere ?
is there a option to get up all the text boxes? ie: sent box, recieved, drefts etc..
locked- is there any other way to wake the phone up apart from the on/off button at the top? i have problems with this now as i bought a gel cover & its makes it harder to use with 1 hand !
glowing buttons- is there anyway to have the 4 buttons (home, menu etc ) on the bottom glow when the phone is in use? these are impossible to see in low light & i am sick of hitting the wrong 1 !!
apps- is there a app for viewing tv on the wildfire? bbc i player , catch up tv etc, i looked on the net & skyfire seems to be the app but when i search the market its not there ?
anyway , that will do for now lol, im sure i will be back with more stupid questions soon lol, i quite like the feel of this phone although i was very dissapointed that it will not do video calls as this is a feature i used quite a lot on my old phone as i work away & chatted to the grandkids & they showed me stuff they had made at school etc, its my own fault for not checking i suppose, i just assumed, if old phones can do it surely the cutting edge phones can, i was wrong lol, anyway thanks for letting me drone on !!!
To forward message, long press the received message, and a pop up screen with several options appear. Sent messages auto appear in the conversation list.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
There is no other way to wake up the phone except the on/off button.
The light for the 4 buttons only glow when the sensor detects insufficient light.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
If you look at the front of your phone, you'll see the HTC logo. Right of that logo, you sometimes can see 2 sort of sensors. Place your finger in front of that and the buttons will glow
thanks a lot chaps, now working fine lol

You can log in using your gmail account and install their fast internet installer.
You can now install apps to your phone from your PC's web browser. Skyfire is in the list

Stock Dialer and Contacts App - Possible to switch out?

Hey guys,
Looks like I got mixed up with the two different versions of the Nexus. I'm a Vibrant (Galaxy S) owner myself. Yesterday, Mom came home with a Nexus! They're basically the same phone, so it was easy to navigate, etc. She had some major gripes though...
First of all the contacts and dialer app in Gingerbread seem to be quite a step back from what I've had in my Galaxy S since I got it months ago. You can't side-swipe the contacts list to either call them or message them, it doesn't have a list of letters on the side so you have to scroll through the WHOLE list in order to get to where you want, the dialer app looks pretty but it doesn't bring up names as you press the different numbers.
Is there any possible way to bring a Galaxy S style dialpad and contacts list to the Nexus? These features may seem like not a big deal, but when you're dealing with over a thousand contacts it becomes quite important.
Any suggestions would be very welcome! Thank you.

I dont see why not, but it would most likely require porting some portions of the Touchwiz framework

Hardware wise they are almost the same, but software wise, they're lightyears away. Vibrant runs on Samsung's TouchWiz interface, the Nexus S runs on pure Google Android operating system.

You tap on the picture to the left of the name, a box will come up and you can quickly call/text/email/gtalk/map/whatever.
As for the list, just swipe up/down the contact list and you'll see a little navigation square pop up on the left, you can then use that to drag up and down to go to the letter you want real fast.

My guess is no, the dialer/contacts app relies on the TouchWiz backbone too much.
My suggestions are above, and also, teach her how to use HER phone and not your phone.
How about installing that dialer app from the market. Damn what's the name of it, I'm drawing a blank. But it doesn't need root and it can be your main dialer and its much better than stock.
Ah its called dialer one.

[Q] A few questions on the ATT GS4

I got my phone yesterday and charged it up etc. I have been giving it a work out trying to get all I could for customizing it as stock.
1 ST ? is how do I get this "air swipe" thing to work? I have all I can find in the settings / air gesture. All the buttons are set to on and it says there is an icon on the status bar with a hand on it, mine don't show the hand and only holding a finger over such as email will it show content. How do I activate and get the air stuff to work?
2nd ? is this, I was out of town and on my way home I stopped at a Best Buy, there happened to be a Samsung rep in the store with a display out, he let me play with his working demo and I asked a lot of questions. He showed me the phone dialer and said on the ATT version it comes out with a white key pad but the dialer could be "customized" to be a pale blue which his was, but he couldn't get the settings to come up to show me how. Does anyone know where this is changed to make the dialer blue with the contact showing a background as blue ? I don't know which version his demo was but I am assuming it was the international version possibly.
3 rd ? Being used to the ATT HTC One X , when arranging apps on the screen it was possible to merge two or more apps into one folder, on this phone I can't seem to put any apps together in one folder, is this not possible on this phone?
4th ? I was talking with the rep and mentioned I like to "tinker" with custom roms as I rooted , unlocked and S-OFF on the HTC One. Further I told him about reading the dev web site and rooting the new GS4 and as of yet no custom recovery. HE said that would void the "carrier" warranty but didn't say anything about manufacture warranty, so is it void also?
I am sure as I get deeper into this phone I am going to have more questions, so any help with this would be appreciated .

I do not see any setting for a pale blue dialr either.
As for the folders; When viewing either your home screen or all of your apps, hit the menu key and choose create folder. After creatung the folder, hit the menu key again and choose edit. When the screen adjusts you can drag icons into the newly created folder.

Thank you, well I had this phone in my hands yesterday and the guy had a shirt on that said he was Samsung inside a Best Buy in Arkansas. He did tell me that the ATT version came out with a white dialer , which mine has but his had a blue dialer. He told me there was a setting to change it to blue or ??? but at the time he couldn't find it. I think I have been all around the phone inside but I can't find anything like that and can't get the air thing to work right. He just waved his hand over the screen and it changed screens. I can hover a finger over the email and read inside without actually opening the email. He said this was another "air" feature but it only worked on the Samsung email app. If using , yahoo or gmail or some other app for email it wouldn't work.

Yes , I am pretty sure they have cell phones in Arkansas, in fact the local Walmart does a big business in supplying most of the county here. I had a conversation with the Samsung Tech dept. come to find out that feature is only available on the International version. Asked why the Samsung rep was demonstrating a International version at a Best Buy in Arkansas, I was given no answer. After being guided thru the booting of the boot loader, and a cache wipe , then a reset and then a factory reset, I think the feature of the air thing is working, not like I assumed it was supposed to but its almost an air feature I think.
If you want to make folders the easy way (dragging apps together), just use Nova or another 3rd party launcher.

Things you like/dislike about Lollipop 5.0.1 on your Edge

Hello everyone,
I made this topic so everyone can mention things he/she like or dislike about new Lollipop updates and things you want Samsung to consider on the coming updates.
Things i like
1. The sound on speaker and headset seem much higher.
2. The camera app seem faster on every aspect.
3. Ability to change folders color.
4. Recent app is smoother and faster.
Things i dislike.
1. Shout icon on the camera app moved from edge part of the screen.
2. Heads-up notification is useless on the edge device and samsung was better to disable it.
Other things i leave for you guys to comment and discuss
I'm on T-mobile so I don't have lollipop update yet but I'm surprised you didn't mention ART. Do you see a significant improvement in performance? Especially in the UI. I noticed a big difference on my Note 3 when updating to Lollipop.
Don't have 5.0.1 yet, only read opinions of Note 4 users.
I heard that there is no silent mode, just only vibrations and normal sound.
Second - now you can't block calls, notifications etc. (blocking mode) from X hour to Y hour. Now it has name "ALL" (wtf?) and i heard it's worse than older "blocking mode".
For me worst thing in Lollipop is this one you mention in point 1.
Camera button on edge was perfect, and now it's in the same place like in others phones
Maybe there is chance to install camera from 4.4.4 ? Because it's only thing that keeps me from upgrading system from KK to LP.
Yep i didnt mention all goodies.
*Definitely there is a significant improvement in performance du. to ART.
*Silent mode is exist and works.
* there is 'Do not disturb' mode and you can enable schedule option and seem more advance than blocking mode.
Need more information from you. Then i will update the list in the first post
Likes:
'Places' functionality and associated edge panel
Dislikes:
With the flip case and no lock screen, on opening the cover the express me panel appears on the edge, rather than the first selected edge panel. So that means I don't have my list of app shortcuts! Even pressing 'Home' doesn't bring them up. I have to swipe the edge to get it to work
lollipop
Can i have lollipop on n915f ??
millab, I dont have that issue.... Strange it's doing that for you.
Can anyone upload the 4.4.4 camera apk? I hate the location of the camera button now...

Of course you can. I am currently running lollipop, but you have to root your device and then install it via odin. If you need help just pm me and I will be glad to help.
Agree with point four (things you like) and generaly speaking UI is more smooth.
Desagree with point one you dislike. To much unintationnaly shutter trigger. So the move is welcome for me. Maybe on option/setting to have the choice will be good for everyone.
Totally agree with point two about notification redondancy.

I use hangouts & auto MMS download works fine.
I honestly don't dislike anything on lollipop compared to kitkat. The camera button placement is no big deal, I use voice control if it's inconvenient to use the botton.
Unfortunately even with Hangouts, auto-mms download doens't work since BOC6, stock or cooked rom (french langage)
I likey
Since NO carrier or store has the white model Edge, I opted to order the international sm-n9150 from an import/export mail order. This allowed me to use T-Mobile since they allow all unlocked phones to be brought in. And... AND I didn't realise this when I purchased it but I don't have to wait for the carrier approved OTA for lollipop, I just get the Samsung official update as soon as they release it! I will be getting international models from now on just for this reason. It's the second best thing to nexus immediate updates as I only have to wait for ONE layer of delay (Samsung's) not two (Samsung's AND the carriers). Also, no carrier bloat.
Lollipop is pretty. Material design is nice. Lots of little graphical touches add to the android UI VERY nicely. I'm aware that touch wiz negates quite a few of these touches but I still really like it.
My 4.4.4 note edge had issues where it would stutter upon touching the screen to swipe, and instead of swiping, it would register a TAP and open the app or button under my finger. This annoyance had been immediately alleviated... I can't actually remember it happening once since I updated.
ART makes a difference. Chrome and many apps scroll almost TOO fast.
Haven't objectively measured battery effect yet. So far it's no worse or better, but it's been a short time and I'm playing with the phone as lot.
Right after my update, i felt the system was choppy and stuttery. But i planned to After I update, to do a system factory reset. Recommended for such a large update, and a couple times a year anyway. After that and after a couple reboots, all the caches and temp files seem to be settled in and it's buttery smooth almost everywhere. I also activated developer options and put all my screen animations to 2x. Yes this makes them slower but oh so pretty!!!!
Notifications are so nice. I agree with earlier poster that the pop up notifications that float over the top bar could go away since the edge bar should handle that but it's a small thing.
The place where some animation chop still happens is Samsung's app drawer scrolling. It's not always but it's there very slightly. This goes away if you use a nice launcher replacement like Next Launcher or etc. I have yet to set a launcher replacement, I'm going to use the default launcher for a while to see all the changes. So far so good.
All the people complaining about radical changes for the worse when they update, are doing something wrong. Factory reset after updating!!!!

In earlier days of hangouts, pre Galaxy Edge, I had a devil of a time getting MMS even after they "fixed" it and other users reported it works. So I feel the pain!!!
However, I can report I just tested it again by sending pictures to myself on hangouts and:
-with mobile data OFF and WiFi on, MMS does not come in.
-with normal mobile data on, it does. This is the normal usage scenario for 99% of times anyway so I'm OK with it.
This is normal i believe l since MMS is part of a data standard that uses the cellular audio channel the way SMS does. It's an old format that needs to be replaced. (SMS too)
Anyway it does work. Ensure you are not using WiFi only is my suggestion...
Personally i love and will stay with the loly...the only thing im praying now is for xopsed to work with the edge. Hopefully they will come up with a fix soon..

Haven't had that much time to assess Lollipop on my SM-N915S (Exynos), but really hate the camera button, placed on the edge screen was perfect (for me) on KK
Have noticed that the kernel LMK OOM minfrees and adj have the wrong permissions and you can't change them. Fixed it in my SkyHigh custom kernel though
Also, noticed the minfree values have increased from KK, so may help keep a smoother ROM (freeing up more RAM for intensive tasks) at the expense of less multi-tasking
Device appears a little smoother, but wish Sammy would unlock 64bit for Exynos5433 device. I hate they keep it neutered for the sake of keeping Qualcomm SD 805 customers happy.
Cheers,
UITA
Problems since Lollipop update
Hi. I updated to Lollipop last night and I've noticed a couple of issues today. First, I keep getting a security notice stating "Unauthorized actions have been detected." When I tap the notification, it goes away and then comes back again in a few minutes. I've tried updating my security policy, but that hasn't helped. Second, I hate the floating notifications that pop up at the same time as the edge notifications. It's like AT&T gave me the Galaxy Note 4 Update instead of the one for the Edge. Considering that they also moved the photo button to the main screen, this seems fairly likely. I've also noticed that my RAM status shows that I'm using 2.05/2.71 GB with no apps running. What?!

Wouldn't a factory reset take you right back to 4.4.4 kitkat?
