Update/Root Problem - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm afraid I've goofed up and I'm looking for assistance. After getting 5.0, I rooted using Chainfire's method. Worked fine. Today the OTA 5.0.1 update was failing and it seemed to be because of root. So I foolishly unrooted using the option to unroot offered in Chainfire's SuperSU. Despite this, the OTA 5.0.1 update still fails. So now I'm stuck with the worst of all worlds: no root access and no update.
My hope was (and still is) to be able to get the 5.0.1. without losing all my data.
Any assistance would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Rooting
I'll also add that I tried to, at least, get root back by using the Chainfire's method again, which now fails on me. <sigh> Sorry to be such a noob. Feel like a fool for getting myself into this.

Lost root after flashing to 4.4 from stock rom

Hey people it seems as though I lost root or at least "don't have proper root access" after flashing CMB rc3 ROM. I somehow updated SU binary but still am having issues gaining full root. If anybody has any information on how to help me it will be greatly appreciated.. I am also willing to go back to stock ROM and see if that works somehow but I forgot to backup stock ROM(I know I'm a moron) lol. I had the 4.2.2 OTA D80110g version prior to flashing to CMB.. Would greatly appreciate any help.

Hey thanks for your assistance but I wound up just downloading the rooted stock OTA ROM and re-flashing it and I'm fully rooted again. But do you by any chance know how to fix the issue of losing root after upgrading to 4.4? Does what you told me to do fix that completely and keeps me fully rooted on 4.4? Sorry I'm pretty new to this stuff.

if you flash to 4.4 aosp rom, you have to go into developer settings and set root as apps and adb. this will give you root access.
Assuming that you know what you have done, this is the very first case, not only in this G2 subforum but entire XDA site, that I've heard installing custom ROM and lost root.
The first reply hit the nail on the head, some ROM don't have root for example Omni ROM in originaaal android development....you flash supersu zip after ROM and gapps....looks like you have everything going good, good luck man!

Hey man if you want 4.4 is simple just download the supersu.zip and when your in recovery do the correct wipe then flash ROM and gapps then supersu zip then reboot!
Most Roms have root already like Paranoid android, Mahdi, aokp......Roms like the one you used and omni you need to flash the supersu zip afterward that's it
Yeah check developer settings for root or flash super su zip, also slimkat and others have working root.

[Q] Updating from 4.3 to Kitkat without Root.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 ATT Base: 1337UCUEMK2. My phone is rooted but I am looking to update to KitKat with or without root. I am not against loosing root to get the update. I have searched for a couple of days now and have not found any concrete answer to what the process would be for me to unroot and update. As of now I have the apps that are recommended to be frozen through TB to stop OTAs. Is it as simple unfreezing those apps, unrooting and getting the OTA, or do I have to prescribe to a more intricate process. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I've read that post in the past but for my own understanding, what I would need to do would be to use the Odin tool to install NB1 version, which is not rooted, then upgrade to the latest version of Android like you would normally upgrade via the software updates? I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly what the course of action would be if I were to partake. Thanks again.

You've got it down. Odin will wipe your device so make sure any pic, music, etc you want to keep are backed up off the device or on your external sdcard. Also, it's a good idea to use titanium backup for your apps and their data

[Q] Galaxy s4 in a weird Not-Rooted/Rooted state

I recently rooted my Galaxy S4 using the Towel Root method. but a week ago or so while driving ATT forced an update and updated to the new version. The problem is I do not have Root active, but I can't use certain apps due to getting a message saying that they can't be used on a Rooted device. I am not sure how to remove this odd state I am in. Has anyone had this issue and know how to remove it?
Device: Samsung Galaxy S4
Carrier: AT&T
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android Version 4.4.2

What is it that you really want - to regain root or to unroot?
1. To regain root - read the root section of All Things AT&T thread
2. To unroot
a. Without losing data -- I am not sure exactly how to do this
One way would be to re-root and then unroot using the superSu app.
b. With losing data -- Oding NB1 stock and update to latest. Follow Return to Stock
I would like to have it go back to unrooted status. I was hoping for a data safe method. But at this point whichever will work. I am assuming i'll have to root, then unroot. But I didnt know if this causes problem as apps believe it to be rooted but the system says I am not.
I'm having the same dilemma
I rooted my s4 using towelroot. Later att forced an update to 4.4.2 which i thought wouldn't work because it was tooted. But it actually did work and updated. Now the phone is not rooted but it seems that there are some files that are still somewhere that pretty much makes it be partially rooted but with not real root access. Now that the next update is being forced by att for version 4.4.4 it doesn't work. It stores installing at 27% with a failed message. I uninstalled towel root and super user but with no success. I whiped the partition and no success. I did a factory reset which i thought it would work and remove the files that maked look rooted and no success. What should i do exactly to unroot it?

You would have to Odin the nb1 tar file, it's the only version that exists. Then ota to 4.4.4, nj4. Any version of Odin works. It will wipe your device and you'll have to start over setting it up.

[Q] Little help for Un-rooting & returning to stock 4.4.2

I'm looking for some help to return to stock on my Note 3. I'm a very casual rooter and don't flash any ROM's. The only reason I rooted in the past was to get free WiFi tether but we now have that for free on our account (family plan.) My wife also has the Note 3, completely stock, and has gotten several updates and is now on lollipop.
I rooted about a year ago, maybe 14 months. I used a method that at the time was very popular here... safestrap and Odin. Easy to follow. I've rooted every phone I've had going back to the original Droid but I've never gone this long without returning to stock so I'm a little worried about the process. Everything is backed up and ready to go on the device.
I would like to return to stock and then take the OTA's up to Lollipop.
This is my current setup:
Safestrap 3.72 (TWRP v2.7.0.0)
"Stock" boot option
4 Empty ROM slots
SM-N900V
Phone 4.4.2
Baseband: N900VVRUCNC2
Kernel: 3.4.0
Build: KOT49H.N900VVRUCNC2
Hardware:N900V.07
SuperSU v2.46
As a side note, what's the current thoughts about lollipop, if I take the OTA's up to it am I hosed if I were to want to root? (Not my plan but just in case) Are there benefits over 4.4.2, should I just stay where I am?
Thanks!

No, I haven't done anything yet as I'm not quite sure how to proceed.
I have a new note 3 that I may be willing to trade. It came with 4.4.4 and am unable to root. If you're interested, pm me and we can talk. I really want root and can't have it because of the upgrade.

You just need to open
SuperSU > settings > full unroot.
(If you don't see SuperSU after reboot, then you've unrooted successfully)
Done!

Unrooting will make your phone as it was before (loose root access) and you'll be able to update your phone through OTA's.
If you love rooting then you can reroot your device after update.
If you found this helpful, there's a thumbs up button, just press it.

Don't take the update if you want root! After 4.4.4 you will be stuck until someone finds an exploit, which may never come. Hopefully its not too late!

Ok, going to try this tonight.. sorry for the long delay in responding. I'm going to be trying the Super Su method, according to Hitman-XDA it will work for me. My last question is will this also unlock my phone along with unrooting? Currently I am unlocked and rooted.. I mainly want to return to stock to nab OTA's that I've missed out on. Also my VM is broken and I'm fairly positive that will fix it.
Ok, I did not use the SuperSU unroot feature, I read quite a bit more and from what I came to understand it would not work.
I used ODIN to flash a stock version of 4.4.2, that worked great and fully unrooted me. It did not re-lock my bootloader but 4.4.4 OTA was waiting and it locked the bootloader in the process of updating. Then I got 3 or 4 updates taking me all the way to 5.0 with no issues.
Heads up, from what I could find there is only 1 place to download a stock 4.4.2 firmware, rapidgator... it sucks and was really slow to DL. I let it go overnight. When done unzip it, use ODIN and G2G.
Can you upload the firmware file to mega.co.nz ? and share the link?

Any root methods for 5.0 yet?

I'm upset at this point. I just attempted to downgrade to 4.4.2 yesterday but that didn't work (obviously), so I'm stuck. Has ANYONE found anything leading to how to unlock the bootloader for us? I would do it myself but I don't know how. Any support is appreciated.

Actually, this is the first method I tried to root. However, I've found a bootloader unlock that I think works. Once I do this I'll just flash 4.4.2, then flash a custom recovery and flash JasmineROM 5.1

Are you bent on rolling back? I updated my firmware to OF1, rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed TWRP. Then flashed the Jasemine ROM 6.1 (Lollipop) and it works great.
