I doubt that you cannot downgrade even with wiping data

You can flash Custom roms like Omega v13.1, i get to use 4.3 rooted without KNOX.
Just flash a custom recovery and install from there. Do read instructions carefully when installing.
Guys, unless you want a knox enabled bootloader on your phone. Stay away from the official 4.3 rom. If you have no idea what Knox is, then you should read the thread about it.
You can also install PAC MAN Rom, CM, Paranoid Android etc. Knox Free
Hello
I recently got my S4 i9505. I'm planning to root it
I have Android version 4.3
I used to flash costum roms on my s2 but I'm not really planning to do much flashing on my S4. not soon anyway
So as I connected the phone to Kies to make sure the drivers were downloaded so I can proceed with rooting
Firmware update popped up
I'm not sure what the best option for me now.
Should I root now and then I'd be able to flash a costume KK rom? and are there any stable ones that are better than the stock?
Can I use kies to update my rooted phone?
Maybe I should stick with JB 4.3? Which one is better 4.3 or 4.4.2?
I remember facing some issues when I update my s2 back. So I searched for the KK Update for the s4 and some people weren't so happy with their KK update
I know that doesn't represent the majority but still it could happen to me
So I confused myself
What is your advice to me?
sorry for the long post
Also I have an extra question What is KNOX? and do I need it?

First, the most problems in 4.4.2 are fixed, so if you flash the officical, latest firmware of your country you shouldn't have any problem.
An important thing: if you flash a custom rom, your warranty will be set 0x1, that means, you lost your garanty if you flash a custom rom, that's the so called KNOX. You can use knox like a second system on your phone, with all secure data in it, you can only access with a passwort and all datas are locked without this passwort.
Root your phone after the software update if you want to root it.

thank you for your input
I have a rooted TMOB Note 3 that I'd like to either
a) update to 4.4.x without losing all my apps or if that's not possible
b) update the baseband on it as I'm having SMS issues with WiFi enabled that I'm told is fixed in newer basebands
Is a) possible, and if so, a pointer would be appreciated. From what I read, Odin will keep pics but wipe the apps. I don't want to lose my fuel log info, etc.
If a) is not possible, then a pointer to instructions for b) also appreciated
Thanks!

if you're rooted backup your apps with titanium backup.
Upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 from the same region will not wipe your data.
Are you suggesting Kies or Odin to update? what do you mean by 'same region'? US TMOB rom to US TMOB rom? I'm running the stock TMOB rom.
and i wanted to ask a quick question, i am intending in the future to root it and maybe install GPE roms in it, should i just leave it at 4.3 and avoid 4.4.2? i read that downgrading and installing recovery is hard .

Hi mate
Some roms need the newer bootloader to work witout problems , if the bootloader is not a problem stay in what you have , is always better
Hi guys,
so, I rooted my phone after installing Pie, but now among other things I wont be recieving any OTA updates, whats is the simplet way to just update the phone?
From what I read here on XDA I think thats best way is to install via Odin with home_csc but my question is when my phone is rooted will it still have root or it will even boot? Did somebody of you tried this?
I will be very gratefull for any suggestions to this topic.
