Hi... I am using 4.4.2 stock ROM, rooted.
The 4G LTE symbol is always on.
None of the following attempts removes it -
1. Connecting to Wifi
2. Removing Caller Id
3. Stopping all Verizon background apps
4. Stopping mobile data
5. Switching Wanam Xposed "Persistent data type icon" under notifications either on or off
It always remains grayed out but up there when I am connected to Wifi, like the picture below.
Is it also like this for you if you are using 4.4.2? Any more ideas that I can try to remove it?

I don't think it ever goes away on stock 4.4.2, maybe not even on 4.3, I've heard others complain about it as well. I think the only way to get rid of it is to install a custom rom. I am running JellyBeans build 2, it's pretty close to stock, and it got rid of that, it's only on when mobile data is on, not when wifi is on. Hope this helps.

Yes, that helps! Thanks. Weird, I didn't find many threads on this topic - only a few where the issue was resolved apparently by removing Caller ID app. It's good to know I am not alone.
I might try the JellyBeans 2... I have never changed to non Stock ROM's before, can such a change preserve all my apps and settings?

I think if you make a safe strap backup you can always come back to it and restore if something makes you not like it.
As for keeping your apps and data, I think whatever is on your internal/external storage stays untouched, but as for the apps, JellyBeans is different enough from stock, although it looks the same, that you may have to do a data partition/cache wipe to get it to run stable. What I always do is make a note (no pun intended ) of all my downloaded apps and changes, or maybe back them up with Titanium Backup to the external storage, then just re-download from Play Store or restore with Titanium once the new rom has been installed. Just takes a few minutes of getting used to in the new rom environment. Good luck!
Removed it! With Xposed Framework, I downloaded a gem of a module called - "Samsung Data Connection Icon Fix". That did the job. Link - http://repo.xposed.info/module/net.thinkindifferent.dataconnectioniconfix

I recently took a screenshot that revealed another background window behind a warning message window that says "Hello world, PM EasyView!"
Is this some kind of malware? I tried scanning my phone with Lookout Security and it did not detect anything suspicious.
It all began when all of a sudden my stock 2.2.2 Defy's Task Manager kept showing popup messages telling me that my Hotmail app is running for too long and is consuming memory. This never happened before, ie. Task Manager app showing warning messages about apps running for too long. I suspect a malware infestation. Please advise.

If you are scared that you are infected by malware the only "safe" thing to do is a full data wipe.
You dont have clockworkmod installed do you? Would be helpfull to have a full copy of the system to analyze it. I think clockworkmod would be a perfekt method to get a copy of the whole system.
sorry i don't know how to solve this. maybe it's time for you to change to some other ROMs...

Well not exactly scared but I was just wondering about the origin of that "Hello world" message. "PMEasyView"? I wasn't able to find any app or developer by that name among the apps installed on my phone. Just was wondering if anyone here knew thats all. I rooted my phone using SuperOneClick, does it install Clockworkmod too? Or do I have to do it separately?

I did install CM 7.1(2.3.7) but I didn't quite like it..I mean don't get me wrong..CM 7.1 is awesome but the ADW launcher kept crashing on me, something was eating up the battery way to fast and this is weird but I found that the sound quality(headphone and speaker) had actually deteriorated..maybe I didn't get some settings right but anyways I decided to roll back to the Motorola stock 2.2.2 froyo JRDNEM_U3_3.4.3-36-1.7 and wait until CM9 was out.
Thanks for the replies guys..really appreciate you taking the time.

If adw doesn't work for you, you can download another one from the market. I use go launcher and it works without any problems and damn fast. You should give it a try.

Well it's typical behavior of mallware - I dont have information, that stock task manager will inform you, that some process is running more than x minutes ... try wipe to factory settings and you'll be sure.
Rooting doesn't install Clockworkmod. You only get superuser after rooting. Install 2nd-init and you get Clockworkmod.
You should start using Droidwall and AVG antivirus pro. Try limit the data freedom running in the background.
Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll wait for CM9. I do have Droidwall installed and I've scanned my phone thoroughly with Lookout Security but nothing was detected. Is it possible that the firmware posted here, the 2.2.2 India one is somehow infected?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093352
I took another screenshot of the supposed malware today, this time without the task manager message. I was able to dismiss the task manager message by pressing the search key somehow.
I have seen exactly that same message today. I thought I have been fairly careful about Malware. However, there was an update that was installed from marketplace today.
I wonder if it is possible to look at an update history.

Is the message window in your case appearing under the exact same circumstances as mine? Which ROM are you using? And also if its possible could you do an inventory of the all the apps installed on your phone, then perhaps we can pinpoint the source. Thanks for the reply.
I updated a few days ago to mje and had to Reroot my phone. Anyways since then I've been getting this alert in the notification bar. It appears to be a legit vzw app. When I click it, it asks me to scan my phone for malicious stuff. I froze it yesterday and it stopped but I wasn't sure if it's something worth keeping. Anybody else getting this?
MJC
Wow am I the only one?
I had un froze it last night and scanned with it. But last night I had some major battery drain, I look at the stats and this app was at the top with 53%. So I froze it again and won't be un freezing.
MJC
Yeah, if your rooted you definitely need to get rid of that program. Because superuser is a system modification, and it is detecting it as such.
♢NoteIII♢
I've been getting this nonstop since I rooted about an 3 hours ago. I wanted to avoid freezing any apps (cuz I forget later when OTAs come up and don't want to flash/wipe jus to fix it) is there any other ways to fix it? I'm sure other people are getting this when rooting.
Actually, there is. there's a new xposed mod called RootCloak. It's available in the xposed installer download section. What happens is once you activate it, you choose which APK's you want to hide superuser from. It keeps that app from knowing your phone is rooted. I use it for Flixster , because currently Flixster will not stream movies onto a rooted phone. I just found it and it works like a champ!
♢NoteIII♢
I installed root cloak but I don't see that app listed on it, at least not under the same name. Anyone know what I should select to cloak it?

Do you have tibu? I'll answer as if you just said yes. (I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but this is what I got)
I don't have this app, so I will use Backup Assistant plus as an example. In titanium backup go to the app, and click on it

Hello guys so I recently switched roms to Evo x4. Then i started bringing in backups from titanium backup like contacts, media, etc so then i rebooted. I left wifi on but when reboot done, wifi just kept on scanning. so using root browser i found that my wifi folder and the other file(located on very bottom) had wrong permissions. Every box was.ticked. so i repermissioned them and rebooted but to only see that my permissions had not been saved. someone help.using 3g now but not for long

never use titanium back to restore system apps - if you did reinstall the rom - only restore user apps
with wifi make sure you are using the correct wifi driver for the kernel you are using
there are no bugs like you mentioned in evo x4 so reflash the rom and both ota updates and then only restore user apps

Just fix permissions in recovery/advanced options.....
And also while changing permissions mount system as rw...
For wifi u can try flashing dhd stock zip. (for hells fusion its dhd1.1)....
Don't fix permissions ^^
You'll end up having force closes of system apps after you reboot!
Uninstall Pure Performances and then see if the wifi works or not.
First i set right permissions, then shutdown, then to cwm, then advanced>fix permissions, then reboot now every thing is okay. Tq to all who help
Edit: Nope, Im starting to think Titanium backup's "wifi access points" restore had something to do with this. Problem still not solved and i cant really use a computer to restore stick rom

Titanium Backup is the cause. I have experienced it before. You can reflash Evo x4 rom and everything will be alright. But don't restore that backup. If you restore the backup on where you took it (ex.Stock ROM), then it will be alright. The toggles, apps are worked on the Evo x4 ROM. Therefore, if you flash stock apps again, it will cause the instability.
Press thanks if I have helped you.

common solution for system apps or better to say preinstalled apps is to clear cache, data, force stop and re open it.
Setting > Apps > Camera > Clear Cache, Data, Force Stop
then try to re open app and check issue.
Possible solutions If problem remains
- you need to restart phone.
- reset to factory
- Flash another stock firmware (that u can find in sammobile.com/firmware) via Odin

Thankyou for your help but I have already tried your first suggestion and unfortunatly it didn't help.
I was also thinking I may need to Factory reset or flash another stock firmware as I have tried deleting the app itself and installing again but I still have the same problem.
I just find it strange that I cant seem to find any info on any one else having the same issue...
Anyway when I have abit of free time I will look for a firmware and give it a try. In the mean time any other suggestions are welcome.
Regards,
Gary.
Well I figured out what was causing this. It seems installing xposed stops my stock camera app from working as previously discussed.
The app is fine installed but when the firmware for xposed is installed the camera app doesn't work, when the firmware is uninstalled the camera app works fine.
If anyone has any info on this then I would appreciate it if you could share.
I'm also gonna ask in the xposed thread to see if anyone has any explanation or info. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of this and sort it out.
Thanks if any help or info is given.
Regards,
Gary.

When installing apps the storage manager is not registering the correct size to start off with. For instance a 1.5gb app is showing as total size of maybe 59mb. Under data for the apps it shows maybe 200kb.
Now the worse part is when uninstslling apps it does not race the data for the app. In order to remove the data and get my space back I have to boot into recovery and wipe cache.
Tried removing external SD card and trying it again and it's th deer same issue.
Also when attempting to move data to SD card it doesn't seem to really move anything but takes at least 30 seconds to do it and still requires the SD in the 0hone to run the app
Does anybody know what's up here and willing to tell me?
Thanks maybe.

Ok. Finally installed TWRP on the phone and made a backup.... I could just do it from there right?
Also considering trying either your rom or cm.. I had a couple more.precautionary questions if you could help..
1. When installing Rom I have found conflicting inforation on what needs to be wiped first ... most say just data, dalvik, and cache (so factory reset option in twrp) .... some say I need to wipe system as well. Witch is it?
2. Some roms seem to include supersu with them. If I have already installed it will that be any conflict ??
3. Installing stock rom require same process right?
4. Is there any version of cm that comes with kernel allowing over clock that is safexactly to flash from my current firmware ok3..?
I'm still not too sure about doing this but I can't figure another to solve the issues I am having with this phone, I got it used and it's off of warranty anyways.
Thanks...

1. Some ROMs, like mine, have the austen wipe built into the ROM.
2. No
3. That depends on if you are using Odin or recovery
4. I don't use CM, too unstable for me.

So that means at this point you wouldn't really need to wipe before installing wicked rom anymore?
Also decided against any over clocking now, changed to performance governors and things are working great now, especially games. No hitching, we're I was getting 10fps or less I cod strike team it's now 30.. so if I install a rom it will be wicked, especially the function on it "fix external SD write" fixes my storage management issues than that alone would be great and the debloat and performance tweaks would be a great bonus.
Thanks.
