Current S5 root option as of December2014? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My girlfriend is getting a new S5 possibly tomorrow... Not sure if she is getting the prime or not... I would assume not.. But she probably won't even ask. And I have to work so I won't be there.
So I was looking and it seems like with AT&T the bootloader is locked.. She wants me to root the device for her and install some of the neat things I have on my tmo note3.
I read about the towelroot discovery and went to download it and it spammed my browser opening over 100 tabs and turning the tab counter into a " : D " which I thought was pretty funny..
I read that towelroot method only works if your kernel is prior to jul 3 or something and as my girlfriend is getting her phone now it won't work?
Basically what is the best current root option for the S5 on AT&T

Anyone?

Fix S5 Dev Edition and or root new S5 on Mac

Hello fellow Android community. Recently I ended up bricking my Verizon S5 Dev Edition using Safestrap. I went out and bought a new consumer S5 it's running Kit Kat 4.4.4 NK2. I already know Towelroot doesnt work to root it. I'm using a Mac with Hemidall 1.4.0 installed and can't access Windows XP in Virtual Box no longer as it won't install properly. Is there any way I can fix my Verizon Dev Edition and or root this new Verizon S5 without having access to an actual PC using ODIN? Last summer I flashed the wrong file on my Dev Edition and it locked the bootloader making it a consumer version. Currently Verizon S5 Dev Editions from Samsung are on backorder. I'm setup to be emailed when they are in stock and it will take 4 weeks for them to get the product according to their site. Thanks for the help. This has been cross posted in another forum pertaining to root but less extensive in detail.
I have already towlroot installed on my current S5 and files to downgrade even though im already on NK2 stock.

Did you make a backup of your aboot partition from the Developer Edition? The second you get a new Developer Edition, don't do anything and PM me. I'll walk you through how to backup your Developer Edition bootloader for safekeeping in case you need to unlock your device again. It's very important to make a backup first thing.

Hi Ryan thanks for writing me back on my issues with the S5. Ok well yesterday I got Virtual Box to work as I updated the version and installed Windows XP on my Mac. I had used it previously and successfully had used Odin before. However this time I cant get it to recognize any USB devices even after ejecting them from the Mac part. I called Samsung support of the broken Dev S5 and after lengthy talks they refuse to fix it as it's in the system already as "Beyond Economical Repair" from last summer. Another person I reached out to from Brickedmyphone.com got back to me and said he thinks my devices via USB isnt recognized because of emmc failure. When I went to recover my Dev S5 I thought i had a backup in Safestrap but it turned out I didn't. So I did a factory reset thru that then backed out and had it in download mode in which it stayed on. Pulled the battery power on and it stays on Android boot screen now. I never did backup the bootloader of my Dev S5 because no one ever had told me to do so. Never would have thought about doing such a crucial thing. My biggest worry with another Dev S5 is will they be available again as they are on current backorder? And will they still ship out of box with version 4.4.2? When I had the S5 it wouldn't system update at all so my guess is that's the only version it will have unlike the regular S5 that now has 4.4.4? I guess with the Dev Edition weather I flash anything on it or not is that the warranty after 30 days is void. I figured if I didn't flash a custom recovery on that phone I would have been ok but thats not the case. I've had TWRP on my past two Droids and rarely do I run into problems.
As far as the regular S5 from Verizon i plan to return it for majority of my money back by the 17th. But what do you recommend I do for a phone in the mean time? Unless I can get my bricked S5 up and running again. It has a broken Sd card reader anyhow so eventually would have to be replaced.
Note 4 Dev Edition
I'm considering getting Note 4 Dev Edition even if the S5 Dev is available in weeks to come from now. I read someone posted a custom rooted deoxedized without knox rom for it. Otherwise your not able to root it? I plan to try a Note 4 from the store once i return this here consumer S5 to Verizon next week Friday. @ryanbg

You can most definitely root any Dev edition regardless of ROM. Send me a message when you have the phone in hand and I'll give you a hand. I'll help you back up your bootloader too.

Thanks for the reply although very late. I ended up going with a rooted Samsung Galaxy S5 off ebay which is new running 4.4.2. By the time I purchased this phone the Note 4 and S5 Dev editions where still on backorder and I needed a phone quickly. I do like the Note 4 and can't wait for the Note 5 this fall to see what it will be like. I also have an inetrest in the LG G4 heard good things about the specs on it.

I Need Help: Need to Bypass Samsung Activation Lock

Hello. I bought a S5 from Ebay for Boost Mobile. Problem is that it has the Samsung Activation Lock still on. Ive done the searches all over the net and have come across URL="/watch?v=EaN13PiQbe0 ====Video"]/watch?v=EaN13PiQbe0 ====Video. I understand most of it but I can't find a workaround for the "findmymobile.samsung.com" part. Is there a way to do it on a S5. Don't Chastise Me. Im Not Nixon. I am not a crook. I paid for a phone with a clean ESN(I checked) and dont want to be stuck with a paperweight. Thanks in advance.
Searching for the S5 tutorial would have been better than the S6 ones lol

And flashing a KitKat ROM from sammobile first with ODIN works if you know the samsung account (If you locked yourself out of your own phone) for future reference
Sorry

Stable Root for SM-G935P?

HI. I have a question regarding my s7 edge on sprint (SM-G935P) and to whether or not anyone has found a stable rooting method for it. Im somewhat experienced in this kind of topic as i have rooted my phone multiple times and have found success but all methods resulted in a very laggy phone. So im not new to this but could use a little more knowledge. From what i know, the root methods used to root the snapdragon models of the s7 and s7 edge are using ENG Boot and in result, that's why devices are not as stable as they are on stock firmware. Because of locked bootloaders and from my understanding, there is no way to root without a laggy phone. Unless you were to unlock your phone, there's no way of rooting without lag? Also, from what i gathered up is that you can convert a SM-G935P model phone to a SM-G935U. G935U is the unlocked firmware? If so, if i try to root will i keep the sprint service? I may sound silly right now but im posting this to better understand if any one of you have found a rooting method which eliminates all lag or as much lag as possible. If there's is nothing i will probably be better off sticking to my stock s7 edge like i have been for awhile now. I have found this though and im curious to know if this has anything to do with my post?

It depends on what version you are using at this time. That U root only works if your sprint phone has a binary version of 4, sprint updated the binary in December. That makes all sprint S7E phones that received that December update unable to root as they were updated to binary 5. To find out what what binary version you have, go to setting and about phone. Look for the updated version (it should start with G935P), The 5th to the last number will have either a 4 or 5 on it. If it has a 4, you can root it, if it has a 5, you cannot root it. The U root will work on all American phones as it is programed for GSM and CDMA phones. You may lose all those "awesome" sprint apps when you use the U root flash.
I am very curious on this issue also. I just moved from Colorado to Wyoming and Sprint does not offer unlimited data roaming, so I want to unlock and maybe transfer services to another company, AT&T and Verizon are the two that seem to provide direct service here. But the rooting issue would be a possible huge advantage, maybe....

Ok, ive scoured the internet and got conflicting results. However, Im not a pro, and it appears you have the low down on the current root status. So here is my question for anybody that can help. I have the Sprint S7 edge (SM-G935P), and Im pretty sure Im on the number 5 bianary, so it appears that Im stuck. But please clarify, does this mean that there is no way to root my phone period? What if I dont go to the "U" firmware? Or better yet, isnt it possible to rollback to a different firmware, to marshmallow or something, and then go from there? I heard you can roll back if you have a "pit" file or something? Can anybody offer me any way to get rooted? Im sure I can follow the instructions if I can find any, Ive rooted plenty, but so far I havent found any options. Thanks.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner, I don't go to the sprint part of the forums as much anymore.
At the time, the U Firmware was the only way you could get root. The root method has changed but it still requires the same or lower binary version than the rooted rom. If you are binary 5 and the other ones are 4 you will not be able to root. From what I've seen so far, verizon and the U firmware is still binary 4. What makes this worse, is once you are on a higher binary version, you can no longer downgrade (I've tried during bricking). I have tried a pit file with a non sprint phone and could not get the phone to downgrade either.
Right now you can either wait and see if they upgrade to binary 5 and root then, or you can get an unlocked verizon s7 edge and get root. Both are not the greatest of options
It gets worse... Getting root on a newer phone is not like the older days. I am rooted and all I can use is an altered stock rom. Because the bootloader is locked you cannot use custom recovery and roms like lineage and crDroid. So even if you get root, depending on what you want to do, you will still be limited.
5th number from the right on mine is a 6.

Me too. I'm fed up with not having root. I not having a easy tether for wireless (BT is too limited) I has cost me on several occasions. I am actively looking for a new phone.
This entire phone is a step backward coming from the Note 4. I lost battery changing on the fly, reliable root / roms, and hotspot, and etc.
Sprint logo change
Hi
I have sm-g935p , s7 edge sprint
I want to remove sprint logo
How to do it
Mine shows up in stock recovery as g935PVPS5BQK1 . anyone know exactly which custom recovery and root method for this is? If I'm in right area then that's fine for me I'll continue as is but just wanted to make absolutely sure before I carry on.
Sprint
I removed the logo but I had to unlock the cell phone

Unlocked S8 G950U1 on Sprint, can I root and install recovery/ROMs?

I have an unlocked S8 (G950U1) that I bought directly from Samsung and activated on my Sprint service in the US. There doesnt seem to be much activity in the ROMs section for Sprint so Im wondering if I am able to root and install recovery/ROMs on this device? Will it still work on the Sprint network? Its been a while since Ive messed around with rooting a phone (last time was S3/S4) and things are a lot different these days. Im not looking to do anything crazy, just be able to remove some bloat or install a ROM that has bloat removed. Im assuming Knox will get tripped with a custom recovery, so will that break security (fingerprint/face) and NFC pay apps?

There is a root method and 1 rom look in dev sections
partcyborg rom 950u:good:
Also said root method can be a little overwhelming there will be errors along the way bust most are ok and normal read the whole thread Op several times....
As we have locked bootloaders we have to use an engineering kernel which is as well bl locked and we can only charge to 80% but it is a wonderful 80% that will most agreed beat stock SOTs

S10+ Root for Hotspot/real VOLTE Sprint

So I seen I can root my US S10+ little nervous havent dont this from lollipop.
I hate Sprints new VOLTE I cant use my Magic Box for it. I would also like total Hotspot and kill my Note 4 that I currently use another line for.
I know shortcut master quit with pie. My device I type in the ## blabla for the edit for APN for data I cant edit the APN it's greyed out.
I have yet to try the command promt work around that is on the Note 9 for pie on Hotspot.
If I root will I be able to turn on the old Volte with sprint like my Note 9 had with Oero that worked on a Magic Box, and also turn on non counting hotspot towards that part of my plan?
Is root what is holding back short cut master in Pie?
I've read and read I havent found any answers
root isnt available for the us snapdragon devices
https://www.idroidspace.com/how-to-root-galaxy-s10-xda-reddit/
Says "ROOT GALAXY S10 EXYNOS & SNAPDRAGON WITH MAGISK MANAGER"
Clearly I havent risked my phone as of yet.
I mean it could totally be lying about it. So if there is no root.....If root did happen one day, would that unlock those features?
Should I just try the Command Prompt. Can u do VOLTE and Hotspot with that Pie work around on a SD S10+
you can pretty much forget root on snapdragon versions of samsung phones ... theres no way to get the bootloader unlocked ... hence no root... usually some groups get together and put a bounty for devs to try to find a way to bootloader unlock .. but from what ive seen in the past thats more or less over in the last few years ... most devs have moved on to devices that offer bootloader unlock already
You don't have to have an unlocked bootloader to obtain root. A root method just needs to be exploited, which with Android 9 on the S10+ a root method hasn't come to fruition yet and probably never will given all the security updates. Remember towel root? It rooted the AT&T and Verizon samsung galaxy s4 and s5 all with locked bootloaders.

I think the snap dragon s10+ they are referring to is the hongkong model (G9750) Which I believe is the only rootable snapdragon variant.
Can the APN be edited on an unlocked S10+? Not worried about root, but if I can't activate native hotspot this phone is off my list.
