New phone arrived...... Towelroot not downloading - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so as the title says, I just got my replacement phone. I"m trying to root it now and get SS installed before I send the broken one back.
I swapped sim cards and turned the phone on, I am trying to download towelroot with no success. I go to www.towelroot.com and click the symbol and it says downloading, but it does not appear on my pull down status bar. When I go into my files>downloads> it says in progress.....but its been over 10 min...... does TR still work? I can't even get the dang thing to download....sigh
developer options are enabled and unknown sources and debugging are checked off
Am I missing something really simple?

Next quasi dumb question.....
I need to install TR and SuperSU
odin NCG kernel
open TR "make it rain"
odin NI2 kernel
open supersu, update binaries
then DL and install SS....
is that all right?

Softbricked after OTA update

I am getting the message in ODIN when I try to power my phone on:
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please use Software Repair Assistant & try again.
It happened after I tried to "reroot" my phone after the OTA update from yesterday. I was using Root De La Vega. I must have done something wrong. After about 20 seconds of the recovery process it gave me an error: secure check fail : cache at the last line under the paragraph in the upper left hand corner. Now my phone just sits in ODIN with the above error message. Is there a way to recover?

What the guy was saying is that the OTA breaks root...that's why you're getting the message you're getting. You'll have to go back to the previous build to root as stated above. Next time, do a small amount of research before accepting an OTA.

OTA doesn't break root, you just have to use caution - go in SuperSU, select Survival Mode, deselect Enable Superuser. Then take the OTA update - when it's all finished, go back into SuperSU, select Enable Superuser, then uncheck Survival Mode and you're done. Root on latest OTA update.
I believe you need to have the pay/pro version of SuperSU for the Survival Mode option.

Correct if I am wrong....wouldn't it be easier just to revert to stock using Odin and then take the update on Kies or OTA then root again? I think this would save a lot of folks the trouble. You can root the OTA and safe strap still works....

Yeah I saw this after i softbricked. I'm relatively new to the Android scene. I did a lot of modding on Winmo and a good bit of jailbreaking, but it's been a while. Admittedly, this was a bit of a careless mistake, but it didn't warrant all of the douschebag remarks. I did do some searching before I asked....

That's how I got myself into this mess.. used that after my OTA update. I have tried it several times since but if fails almost immediately with the following error. Not sure exactly what it means but I assume it's telling me it can't update the BL because i already have a newer version (after OTA MJ5 update)
Code:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : [sbl1]Fused 2 > Binary 1
thanks for the suggestion
P.S. no luck at sammobile either

Unroot S4 mini (already on stock rom)

Hi I can find loads of guides to unrooting when stock rom needs flashing, but I am already running stock rom so don't really want to go thought the hassle of losing everything again.
I read a post that said I need to delete SU binary, but tried with root explorer and it wont let me delete it says it's read only
Any tips on how I can unroot when I am already on the correct official rom?
Thanks

Do you have a custom recovery installed? That will stop it. You may have to Odin back to complete stock to get it to update

Wanam Xposed has a setting called "fake system status" in Security hacks. It changes phone status from custom to official.
You need to download and install Xposed framework first before you can use Wanam Xposed.
You can download Wanam Xposed from the Playstore.

Okay, choose Survival mode in SuperSU and do the update.
I turned on Survival Mode and changed my rom to Official with Xposed, but when I try to do the update it fails. Any idea how I can get it to work? I can't get MMS working or VoLTE without it.

I FIXED IT OMG! After extensive Googling I found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...900tuvudnf4-extracted-stock-firmware-t2834398
I followed that guide and Voila! MMS works now. I guess you can't allow it to autoupdate since it's rooted for some reason. The manual update via Mobile Odin and regular Odin worked perfectly. I didn't trip Knox either and my root remained intact. Hopefully this link can help others.
To others who may happen upon this post. The one thing the guide failed to mention was to install the Samsung USB drivers first to ensure Odin can connect. I also read to turn off USB debugging, but I read that AFTER I did it. Just posting that, so others can make sure to turn it off just in case.
You can find the USB drivers here: http://androidxda.com/download-samsung-usb-drivers
I know posting this hoping it will help someone seems like a stretch, but I always do it due to this Xkcd: http://xkcd.com/979/

I recently used this one for my S4 on 4.4.2 - which I think is about as simple as it gets: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-root-i337ucufni1-t2881298
here is the link to the same method if you are on 4.4.4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...to-root-i337ucufnj4-4-4-4-11-13-2014-t2939553

that would explain it then... I have NJ4... guess I'm gonna have to jump through hoops... one more question... in order to load those stock kernels, I have to load them on the memory card, right ? then when I reboot into download mode, they'll show up as options... right ?
Just download the nc1 kernel to your computer and put your phone in download mode. Flash the kernel over the nj4 restart the phone root with towel root boot the phone back to download mode, flash the the nj4 kernel restart the phone and you'll have root.
ok guys... thanks for all the help... I've got a rooted phone now...
You're welcome. Good to hear you got it rooted.

hey im test for root an device equal to you.
root fine (kingroot apk)
but when reboot there is an error "kernel fail" & dont work any more
some sugerence?
Hello!
Need a stock 5.1.1. recovery.img if anyone knows how to upload one? I have made a noob move and tried to root via kingroot, then installed supersu and it said it worked, but it needed a reboot so I reboot and now it says kernel fail security error flashed unknown firmware and won't boot at all. I can get into recovery mode and odin mode, but everything I've tried to flash fails. I believe this is due to a reactivation lock which I (stupidly) set to active when I first received the phone. I have the Cricket version of the Samsung Galaxy Prime SM-G530AZ.
If anyone knows anything to help, please let me know. I have been working on this for about 24 hours and have made no progress thus far. Kies even says unknown error occurred, upgrade not finished, whether the phone is plugged in or not.

I used kingroot 4.62.It failed several times and then I had given up.A little bit later a pop-up said selinux had been turned off and that I should reboot to turn it back on.Don't reboot!!Once you see that message run kingroot again and you should be good to go.Find selinux changer by searching xda.Once you successfully root run selinux changer before you reboot and set it to permissive. If you don't you'll lose root once you reboot.Hope this helps.I'll try to post a thread detailing the steps once I get off work.Don't mess with any system files or try to debloat!!!!!You'll get a kernel fail and lock your phone up!!Yes I got it at Wal-Mart
