The Nexus 4 isn't currently my daily driver, but I like to leave it plugged in so it's not totally dead when I decide to use it at some point in the day. I often notice that the screen is on (at the lock screen) when I haven't touched the phone in hours. It doesn't seem very consistent, so at first I thought I was just forgetting to turn off the screen but it seems to me now that it's doing this on its own. I double checked my USB charging cable and it makes a solid connection.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? While the Nexus 4 is an older device, it's new to me. (as is Android to some degree)
Device specs: LG Nexus 4, black, 16gb, Android 4.4.4 (rooted)

A month ago my devices got violently hitten agains the floor by my ex-wife
I have REALLY REALLY important information there, so i wanted to acess data or turn it on using an external screen.
After that i remember the screen was turned of but when i unlock the device it makes a sound, and i felt the vibrations of the unlock pattern, so i Thought screen was broken but devices was working fine.
I bought a nexus 4 hdmi cable yesterday, and plug in to the tv, first i test with my nexus 5 and it works fine.
I plug the nexus 4 (which should be without battery because was unplugged for a month) and the led start to blink red. As when is charging with low battery. After a couple of minutes it stop blinking and I tried to turn it on pressing the power button while connected to the TV. Nothing happend,
I left it charge a little bit more, after a couple hours I tried again, nothing happen. Device is like dead.
I pluged in to my computer. nothing happend, try with fastbook devices and adb list, nothing appear.
I really need to access my devices I dont care if is using a TV.
What ideas you can provide to me? is a good idae to disable the device and completely unplug the screen? is there any way to access data without turning on the device? any other option?
My device was rooted. Screen doesnt shows anything.
If it as been smashed around then it could be that the device is well and truly dead, in which case there is little hope, but what I would say is that you could have the better issue that some people get if the phone is discharged too far.
This is a work around for it, but it is rather intrusive, but so some searching for nexus 4 red light battery issues and you may find some easier solutions.

I was recently on vacation taking a "Photo Sphere" with my Nexus 4 and suddenly my phone just turned off. It didn't power down, it just suddenly was off. I felt the back of my phone and it was particularly hot right in the center of the phone. Since that event, my phone is highly unreliable when unplugged and will continue to immediately turn off when I either try to use the phone's camera, or sometimes: try to make a phone call, watch a video, and other random things. After the phone has powered off, it gets stuck in a reboot loop. The phone is bootable and works reliably when it is plugged in. When I am able to successfully reboot the phone, when plugged in, I can see that the battery has plenty of charge remaining. The phone will work for hours or minutes after it has been unplugged as long as I am doing very little with it.
Things I have tried so far have been rebooting into safe mode and formatting my phone with the stock Android 4.4.2 image. Both of these things have not worked out.
I'm trying to determine if I need a new phone if there is something else. Is there anything that would be indicated by a crash log and if so, how would I access that log.
Think it is a hardware issue
I can't help but think that this is a hardware issue. So, I just bought a new HTC One (M8). It is a fantastic phone. I am going to keep my glitchy Nexus 4 as a development/test device.
Hi Everyone! I have a galaxy note 3 SM N9005 32GB. I've started facing a very weird problem recently that I cannot find described anywhere in quite the way I'm experiencing it.. My note 3 powered off by itself after running out of charge last night. Ever since then, the only thing that happens when I plug it in to charge is that the screen stays black and the phone only vibrates once. No charging LED indicator, nothing on the screen at all, just a black screen like when the phone is off. In order to get it to vibrate again, I have to do a power drain before connecting it back to a charger. There's nothing on the screen at all. Can't boot into recovery or download modes and it's not detected by a computer. Have tried multiple cables (USB 3.0 and 2) and have 2 batteries which were working fine till this happened.
Any idea of what's going on? And if I can back up any data from it like contacts and messages? Thankfully, I had transferred almost every app I could to the micro SD card (128GB Sandisk) and was able to at least recover my notes from colornote, but I digress. What is going on in my phone?
Additional info - the battery is probably still charging when I plug it in. I think this because the phone and the battery warm up after being plugged in for a little while just like they used to when the phone was working.
Even more additional info - I don't know if this is relevant, but I recently upgraded to the most recent OS version available. I think It's a 5.0 or something but I can't remember exactly. Also, the front camera stopped working some time after the upgrade. And 2 days before this, 2 apps refused to update for some reason. I don't know if this could be related.
TL;DR - Note 3 N9005 ran out of charge and is now almost dead with black screen and no LED but vibrates only once after plugging in or pushing the power button. To get it to vibrate again, a power drain needs to be done. The battery is still charging because it gets warm when plugged in.
I too had the same problem but when I connected the phone it would not even vibrate like completely dead.
Maybe try these:-
1)Connect it to the pc of it detects it then recovery would be easy.
2)Connect the charger properly.
3)remove battery for like 30 minutes and try the steps 1 and 2 again.
4) If still not working go to the dealer cause I had to go to him too. ?

I bought it off of amazon, any suggestions in such a case? Besides trying to send it back, I mean. Anything or tool I can try? I don't mind if it gets technical. Need to get my app data off the internal memory.
Though mine started with a different problem than yours, since today it seems like the problem is same like yours. Phone's display is totally black, yet I can go to download mode (cause phone is detected by Odin), I flashed the latest stock ROM of UK too, but now there is no change anyway. I want to be practical and think that this is a display problem, if not I will be more than happy. I have to send the phone to a local technician I know, lets see.
The only think I believe you can do is wait, for maybe 6-7 hours or so, with the battery detached, and then insert it back and see whether its booting with display on or not, if not its more likely a hardware issue, display possibly.
Hello everyone, I have a Nexus 7 first gen, I cracked the screen and changed it, after a week the screen would not turn on and found out that the ribbon cable stopped working(my bad I guess), so I left the N7 in a box for a year after I got a ribbon cable to replace.
After turning the tablet back on, the touchscreen it's not very accurate with the touches, I noticed some stains that are hard to see, maybe some humidity or heat damaged the screen. i.imgur. com/ 8AvlB1C. jpg
What really bothers me is that whenever the tablet's wifi is on, the wifi signals for other devices are gone, and the tablet became sooo slow, I flashed it and did not help, maybe if I downgrande to 4.4 it could help, I will try that later, but could it be that?, or just the tablet too old, but even a my sister lower specs tablet runs Android better than the N7.
Hi guys. I'm a fairly new Nexus 7 2012 (grouper) user, got this device foc from someone recently.
On one day after one whole day of not deepsleeping (due to buggy gapps installation I guess, and it caused the tablet to become quite hot) of a sudden my nexus 7 is reluctant to boot/charge.
Then I try all possible solutions, long press power button, pull out battery leave it overnight, charge overnight... but nothing worked.
Then the next day after leaving it charge overnight, it worked. Then the tablet works the whole day, then dead again.
I put it back to charge overnight, but then this time it is not working anymore. Still dead.
Then I unplug the battery and leave it aside for about one week. Last two days I pick up the tablet and plug the battery back. And the tablet works again! Battery is fairly full.
As at that time I'm using my dot os build, thus I flash back to stock immediately after it came back to life.
Then the next day it worked relatively well. Until afternoon when I was flashing my test builds, it suddenly reluctant to wipe data. When wipe the TWRP will restart. But then I try again and it works, and then it works the whole day. Until when I go back home after work at night, I was bored and install a 2GB game. Then when I open the game, the tablet starts to become not so responsive. I relaunch the game, it shows the game splash screen, then suddenly the screen fade black again like how it is previously. Then dead again.
When the tablet is dead, there's a hissing sound coming from the part around of the battery connector there.
I'm guessing that it is due to previously the overheating causing the solder joints to become not properly contacted. I'm thinking about reheating it but not sure what's the exact problem, as I don't know if the battery is faulty. As the previous overheating is not very very very hot, thus I don't really think that it is the cause of problem.
I'm just a fairly new user of Nexus 7, thus ... trying to seek suggestions from experienced nexus 7 users. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
*i got this nexus 7 for about half a year aldy, and it's been working fine until recently. Previous owner is a careful user. the nexus 7 infact looks like new out of the box. Never repaired.
