Help with slow S5, rooted - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I've had a S5 for about 8 months or so. As soon as the root method was available without tripping knox I did this. All has been well up until the past few weeks. For some reason the phone has been slowing down and I really don't know why. I haven't installed anything new on it lately - I've simply just been using it as a phone.
I noticed my RAM consumption on a fresh boot is 1.6GB. Could this be my problem?
I was thinking about doing a factory reset after backing up my call log / sms etc but I'm concerned about the root factor. I'm not sure what will happen to the root if I do a factory reset.
Looking for some friendly advice.
Thanks,

factory reset will not affect root. You will still be rooted

Yes. Do a factory reset + wipe cache and reinstall your applications.

Thanks guys!

I think you should forget CM for now. Factory reset your phone and it will be back to normal and perfect again. Note: Factory Rest wipes all the data in the Internal SD card. So backup to a computer if you have to first. Cheers!

[Q] Unbelievable lag on lollipop

I flashed the android 5.0 image from google website using NRT and then rooted the device. I have TWRP 2.8.1.0.
The problem is that my nexus 7 2012 12GB is giving me unbelievable lag. I have cleared cache and all but it is of no help.
I have no idea about F2FS but I read that changing to F2FS might help. So can any of you tell me what to do.

I had that problem when I first flashed the factory 5.0 Image, without wiping data. It was horrid. The situation didn't improve after wiping data.
Later I flashed the ROM in my sig, and it is working very good. Occasional lag, but nothing worse than kit-kat. Overall the performance is much better than kit-kat.
I made sure to wipe, format, and repair data, cache, and system. In fact, that ROM wouldn't even boot until I did.
I wiped, formatted, and repaired, then loaded the ROM and GAPPS manually via ADB and flashed both normally using the TWRP interface.
Bootloader: 4.23
TWRP: 2810

Factory reset does wonders. Lollipop works great after
I was having the same issue, then uninstalled Facebook and it has been fine since.
I had lag issue with google launcher. I am using launch came with Rom and nexus is much better. I am using f2fs Rom w/o google launcher. It's very usable.
I turned on Develop Options then scrolled to the bottom and checked off "Kill all activities when you leave them" and I really don't have the lag anymore.

Also, scale all the animation speeds down to 0.5x in Developer Options and you'll love the snappiness It works great on my Nexus 7.
wiped cache, 'Don't Keep Activities' and whatever i could find still laggy as sh*t. Will wait for 5.0.1 OTA if that doesn't work back to 4.4.4. Any other suggestions without resetting/wiping ?
Try to run fstrim on /cache and /data
try this fix
I was able to fix my nexus 7 2012 lagging problem after the lollipop update and now it is as fast as before. I posted a video on how I did it and there is no downgrade or rooting required. Here is the link youtube.com/watch?v=OH2iYdr91DE

u captured and uploaded a whole video just to tell us that the lag was fixed after turning location service off?!
I just received my nexus 7 2012, bought it from someone and it had 5.0.2 already installed on it.
This thing is sooo slow that i was wondering if i made a bad buy by getting this model.
Everything is super laggy, for example,.. 9gag or facebook, when it finally loads i cant scroll through it, its so slow it crashes the application before scrolling down.
I tried the wipe cache, enabled "dont keep activities" and set all animations to .5 in dev mode. i tried disabling location.
It all made it a bit more usable,.. but i read people having a smooth and fast device... which i dont have still.
what else could i try? as far as i know its not rooted and has the stock rom.
I really want to like this device but its not happening so far.
Any help is really appreciated
Most of the custom roms fix this issue. very fast now!
I am waiting for 5.0.3 and hoping it helps!

I am not going to hold my breath. After I did a full wipe & installed 5.02 that did seem to help.
I had really bad lag after flashing 5.0.2. I discovered (while trying to install Busybox) that the system partition was full. I deleted a few system apps (stuff I could get from Google Play if I ever needed it down the road), freed up a few megs, and things got instantly better.
Lost 1/2 my storage space
After factory resetting & flashing LRX22G on my 16Gb nakasi/grouper Nexus 7, it has turned into an 8Gb device... I've just spent the past 7 hours setting it all up again, so I am less than keen on factory resetting it all yet again to try & get it working as well as it did under Kitkat before I was stupid enough to upgrade to Lollipop. On the plus side, the horrible lag has finally gone (I think that it is the factory resets & cache wipes that fixes it, but I could be wrong). Now all I need to do is to find out how to convince it that it is a 16Gb version without having to factory reset it. Does anyone have any good advice on that please?

No, I take it all back! The horrible lag & frequent crashes are still here on 5.0.2 & exactly the same as they were on 5.0, & after an afternoon trying to use my tablet I am having no luck. Now my problem is that because I have lost half of my storage space, I don't have enough space to copy back my nandroid backup of my lovely, fast, & fully functional Kitkat installation.

[Q] SGH-I337M Restarts after 30-40 seconds on 5.0.1

Hi guys, I am in DIRE need of your help and expertise.
A few days ago I did the update to Lollipop on my Canadian S4 on Rogers network (not rooted) and everything was fine until this morning when I restarted the phone. It now continues to restart after every 30-40 seconds of running. I barely have time to do anything after it boots up. I have cleared cache with recovery mode and no changes. Safe mode does the same thing so I am certain this must be some kind of Android/Samsung app incompatibility. But why only after a few days? All of my apps are up to date.
I found some similar threads but with no answers:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/help/s4-9505-stuck-bootloop-installing-t3100064
Please help!!! I do not want to do a factory reset as I want to save my data. I have read some online posts saying that this is due to Knox crashing or something along those lines? I'm probably not as tech-savvy as most users on this forum so please advise if there is a known fix for this!
I forget to add - I even replaced the battery to rule that out as a culprit. Still restarting the same way.
Hi, I have a similar problem but mine is worst because my S4 restarts after 4-5 seconds...
This is a video I've recorded, is that what happens to your phone?
I've found that the problem should be caused by some app. Your unique solution is to wipe data and reinstall the ROM you have... that's what I've done several times but after installing my apps(Google automatic restoring) the problem happens again.
So here I am instlling my apps one by one and restarting my phone each time to find which is the problematic one... In my case I belive it's Greenify, but I'm not sure. Do you have it installed?
^ Exactly. But it will be about 30-40 seconds later. I have been going in and disabling Google/Samsung apps one at a time as that's all the time I've got before it reboots. It can't be a 3rd party app because it still does it in Safe Mode. The only thing is apps like Knox can't be disabled without root access. That's why I'm thinking it might be the culprit. I may end up rooting it and trying to disable it that way. My other options is hopefully I can recover as much data as possible with TWRP and then do a factory reset...
I would appreciate any ideas and suggestions!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att is the place to ask your questions as this was posted in the international S4 forum. You'll find more people there familiar with your device than us.
That said, have you attempted to flash the ROM again using Odin?

Shoot, I didn't see that section. That would have been a more appropriate place to post this.
I have not tried that yet. Will flashing with Odin erase my app data and stored files?
Your media and documents on internal storage should be safe. Apps will be lost. But it might be moot anyway, as flashing the same firmware likely won't fix the issue. Unfortunately, it seems as if a factory reset is your best option to crack the bootloop. If you have anything on internal storage that you want to save, look into flashing a copy of TWRP recovery so you can access its file manager. You should be able to pull your data off that way.
Flashing the recovery should not trip Knox, though I recommend rooting anyway and installing a custom ROM, as custom ROMs don't have Knox.

Pretty sure flashing a custom recovery will trip that knox warranty void flag. Unless you were talking about something else.
I think you're right about that. That's what I get for posting just before heading off to work. Nevertheless, I say "screw Knox". Root anyway.

S7 Edge keep freezing or suddenly rebooting

Hey guys, so i have s7 edge for 1 year, but since a couple days ago, the device keep reboot/freeze after i install app/update an app, i thought it was bcs of my sd card so i remove it, but the problem still persist, i already tried revert back to stock rom with odin but still no effect, any idea guys? Any help will be appreciated, thank you
Bumpppp
Please guys, its getting worst
Have you booted to safe mode and stayed for a few hours just to see if it was behaving differently.
Try to do a factory reset and restore your phones to its original settings!
Factory reset steps:Mod Edit
Go to Menu -> System Settings -> Privacy (or User and Back Up) -> Factory Data Reset
All data and apps added by you in the interim will be deleted. It is recommended to make a backup (if you can do that in the present state) or to save all data you want to keep.

Hi! I'm dealing with a friend's no-warranty S7 Edge with a similar problem: the S7E would reboot and gets into bootloop until I go to SafeMode and let it cool down (I mean the phone heats up a lot before it reboots). I'm think about rooting and limiting frequency cores to avoid overheating. Did you try this? Any kernel manager app could do this. I have a Nexus 5X, and they suffer from a similiar overheating problem. Good luck!

The thing is when the first time this happens, its when i use a custom kernel with undervolt + limiting freq, and goes on bootloop. So i revert back to fully stock rom, so yeah your mileage may vary.
Latest fw is causing overheating, bootloops, fast battery drain, stuck black screen with pulsing blue notification lights and buttons unresponsive. Just Google it.
Is there anyway to downgrade stock rom without tripping know.

Had the same problem on stock ROM, but the last update with january security patch fixed it.
Maybe a factory reset fixes the issue?

I did make a clean install through TRWP. WIPED cache and dalvik cache. deleted internal data and system data.
I had random soft reboots before I was on fulmics Rom as well. so I think it's not specific to this Rom....
how many times did your device rebooted?

On which base is Fulmics yet?
The reboots happened once a week, or sometimes even twice a day.
I had this happen on stock. After much reading of logcat output I was able to determine some kind of system table was getting exhausted. Proceeding on the theory that some app must be misbehaving to cause this, I disabled or uninstalled as many apps as I reasonably could, concentrating on what I could remember having installed or updated recently, and the reboots went away (I am paying close attention as I gradually re-enable or re-install stuff but haven't found a definitive culprit yet).

I had the same thoughts.....cause the issue is not taking place continously.... so I don't think it is ha hardware issue.... still couldn't find the app which may lead to a random soft reboot
