hey guys .i just pre-ordered htc one developer edition.what do you think i get the benefits purchasing the developer edition instead of at&t version.
do you think it works with at&t and t-mobile lte networks ?
will i get the software upgrades first like the international version ?
normally the at&t version device get upgrades very late compared to the international version devices.i always wanted to buy a device which works on every kind of gsm networks(hspa+,4g and lte ) in usa and internationally(3g,4g and lte).and which gets the software upgrades right on time .i thought this would be the one .
someone clarify me the choice i made was right

If you want non bloated att software, possibly faster updates, and bootloader unlockable.
Lte will work for both networks.
Updates will probably be quicker due to the fact that there is NO carrier testing. So updates should be fast as the international version.
Sure why not!
There is an entire thread dedicated to this. The dev edition had an unlocked bootloader and SIM. It will only function on AT&T correctly at the moment, but later this year tmobile should have enough of their lte and refarmed hspa network up for it to work properly on there.

The benefit of the Developer Edition is the unlocked bootloader (allows you to use custom ROM), and the unlocked sim (which ATT won't unlock for you even if you buy outright).
Since it is a non-branded handset, it should allow you to upgrade your software like the international version, although this is not as important if you use custom ROMs (since Custom ROMs usually updates as new software is released).
The Developer Edition will work perfectly with AT&T for HSPA and LTE as it is identical besides the branding and unlocked status. It will likely work with T-Mobile's LTE when it's ready but will not work with the 1700mhz HSPA+ network. It may however work in areas where T-Mobile uses 850/1900 frequency (Not everywhere at the moment)
So in terms of advantage over ATT version, the Developer Edition is much much better as it allows you to use customs ROMs (since you are here asking the question, I would assume custom ROM is something you would like to use). SIM unlock is not important to everyone as most will stay with the network anyways, but the lack of custom ROM ability flat out makes it the less desired version.

Well, you asked the questions and I answered them for you (the differences should be black and white for you). Whether or not if it's the right decision is up to you.
32gb or 64GB? Worth the extra cash?

Hi:
I know this thread is about the dev edition but I was wondering if there's any other difference between the 32gb and 64gb dev edition? I know the dev edition has unlocked bootloader, but couldn't we achieve the same thing on the 32gb unlocked edition using this method (htcdev), or am I wrong? Thanks for your help :fingers-crossed:

Yes, it can be unlocked via HTC Dev. Only the AT&T branded devices will be blocked.
Edit: according to your post title, you're asking if dev edition is worth the extra money? YES. Not even $100 more for double the storage.
You can unlock yes. Your getting a extra 32 GB basically

So the dev version doesn't have custom roms, or very little custom roms? If so why would that be? I love flashing roms, but this would be a real bummer.
Nevermind...I read it incorrectly. The Dev version does have custom roms. How are the custom roms different on a dev phone than lets say the sprint version?

The Sprint version of the phone has different hardware as it is a CDMA phone, not a GSM phone. You could potentially brick your phone by flashing ROMS that aren't for your specific device. Stick to this forum for your mods and ROMS/kernels.
Make sure that you install a recovery (CWM or TWRP, both located in the Original Android Development section), which is necessary before you begin to flash anything. Again, ONLY FLASH MODS FOR OUR DEVICE FROM THIS FORUM
this might not the right place to ask this, but does anyone know if HTC will be releasing a developer edition in black?
Because I want to be able to root it and install roms, mods, etc onto my lg v20 so I need to know what model to purchase before I can do all this. And also I have T-Mobile from my work for my own carrier I want to be able to get 4G LTE on this device as well. Thanks in advance

There is only one international model which is h990 dual SIM. It has the most bands enabled out if the box including TD DLTE. It has the least custom ROM support though. If you need official bootloader unlock us996 unbranded is the one to get.

why don't you go with the T-Mobile version. it's rootable, and has custom ROMs and kernels. Also you have all the bands necessary for 4g plus WiFi calling.
So i'm about to upgrade to V20 and i'm on T-mobile network. I'm hearing that V20 regardless of network variant has ALL mobile network bands.
So that brings me to a questions. Historically At&T variants been getting best ROM upgrades from LG and from XDA developers. Would be be best to buy unlocked ATT variant or just buy t-mobile one for Rom support.
I'm looking to run stock but rooted and twrp. Not interested in ASOP roms do to loss of lg framework which i need for superior camera. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Just stick with the 918 for easier support of carrier features, what little remaining dev support there is for the V20 its the same between att and tmobile. You'll need to check out the laf exploit thread to obtain root and twrp recovery.

Buy the T-mobile H-918. That way you are assured Tmo-specific features like Visual Voicemail and Wi-Fi calling.
I've seen the US996 official unlock, but I want to know if anyone of these are preferable since they are easiest to find second-hand:
T-Mobile
AT&T
Verizon
Thanks in advance.

T-mobile process (technical version and skips some details). Same process, but reworded and simplified (and includes ALL the details).
T-mobile (and the factory unlocked US996) let's you actually unlock the bootloader so it takes a bit less time to boot (the other models sit longer at a bootloader locked warning, but they use an engineering bootloader that eventually continues booting)
The ATT is a pain to root too, because there are no firmware files available for it thanks to ATT deciding to use a different OTA format. It's process involves crossflashing then flashing back some att firmware.
(you didn't ask but) Sprint's is unrootable. (if it's taken an OTA anytime in the past 2.5 YEARS or so, so basically 95% of them) (thank Sprint for doing such a great job locking it down! Wouldn't want people extending the useful life of their phones!)
The rest all involve using the LG UP program mentioned and linked in those other guides above in upgrade mode to downgrade to a firmware released in January 2017 or earlier (it needs to have the December 2016 android security patch or earlier) and do an exploit to install an engineering bootloader.
The Verizon model uses the above process but the vibration motor will run continuously when booting until a custom kernel is installed iirc
The international model (H990) uses the above process with a few minor tweaks to get it working
The Verizon and AT&T can be flashed with us996-usa KDZ and then rooted using dirtysanta. This gets rid of verizon vibrate on boot issue and bloatware on both. And AT&T network restrictions.

Thanks. Does that mean that a network SIM locked AT&T or Verizon model gets SIM unlocked when we flash us996-usa KDZ?

NO. It would be nice if it were that easy.
Edit: I would also suggest that if you have a code to unlock your fone do it while it has the carrier locked firmware as a precaution.
Several us996 on fleabay right now

If you're going to use Lineage I recommend Resurrection Remix instead, it runs better in my experience than Lineage does, but your usage may vary.
In the developer options, there seems to be no OEM unlock option to let me install TWRP with odin.
I am currently on Android 9 and Baseband version G950WVLU8CUF3.

No. There is a limited root method, but no, custom ROMs cannot be installed without an unlocked bootloader.
Interestingly enough, the S9 *can* be unlocked (albeit via paid 3rd party service only)

I heard that the Canadian models are the ones that can't be unlocked. I had the same issue with my LG V20 and what fixed it was replacing the Canadian firmware with a US one. Do you think it is possible with Samsung devices?

Firmware is cross-flashable, yes. But that doesn't magically make the device bootloader unlockable.
The OEM Unlock function is removed from all (well, I think there are 1 or 2 exceptions, mostly crappy phones in the A series) USA and Canadian devices
