Guaranteed way to "speed up" your Nexus 6 (animation scale settings) - Nexus 6 General

This is nothing new and nothing groundbreaking...but if you're new to Android, haven't seen this before, or simply forgot about it, I think you'll want to give it a try.
The animations in Lollipop are a bit over the top, more so than previous versions, and speeding them up really made the phone seem snappier. I was tempted to do this day 1 but wanted to live with normal Lollipop for a few weeks...yesterday I made the change and I know I could never go back.
Go to settings/developer options and scroll down to the three animation scale settings. Default is 1x. Change all three to 0.5x. Enjoy.
Note: If your developer options are not enabled, you can go to settings/about phone and tap on "Build Number" 7 times. The option will then be available in the settings menu.

lol.
this doesnt "speed" up your nexus. your nexus is just as fast, just faster animations. heck, if you want to make your nexus a rocket, turn them off completely

In fact it doesn't speed up the Nexus 6...but it does "speed" it up lol. I will change the title to add the quotation marks. It definitely feels faster though and I don't know that you can dispute that
There's a reason I didn't promise miracles in this post!

I prefer to make mine longer at 5.0

I love this tweak. It does actually speed the phone up, no quotes needed. Even if an app loads very quickly, the phone still "waits" for the animation to fully execute. This tweak means that switching apps and loading apps will be faster (in some cases). It is a true speedup.

i dont dispute it. ive had my animations disabled since a few days after android was released
its just saying it speeds it up is inaccurate. lets say it makes the ui feel faster

Its not faster. Things just take less time. ?

Thanks for this. I'm really liking the speedier animations so far.

Would the speedier animations tax the processor more and in turn use more battery? I'm sure it would be small if it did but I would like to know if it did.

I don't think it makes any difference at all to the processor. If anything, a faster animation lets you get to where you were going faster, thus reducing the amount of time you need to have your screen on.

WidgetLocker

Have anyone tried WidgetLocker? What are your impressions on it? I've read is kinda slow on some phone, but what about on the Epic?

I purchased it shortly after I got my Epic, and after using a warez version for a while. It's pretty great, and isn't slow. It's not 100% seamless, but it's close enough to where you won't notice. The ability to hide the notification bar is great for privacy, its sliders are better than stock, and of course the ability to add widgets is nice. I'd take a screenshot, if I still had it set up (I haven't since I became a ROM developer ).
I also would like to say it is a very nice program and it is not slow runs great, I like the way you can have custom unlock open program sliders for fast access.
Cool, thanks for the replies
Its real nice, u can do a lot with it. The dev is good with support and its not slow.

I read somebody saying that widgetlocker increased his battery use and therefore was good but gave him trouble because of short battery life. It could be a single case or it could be a issue. What is you guys experience who used it?? Did you notice any increased battery drain??
I love widgetlocker! Total +1 for me. It cause a little slowdown back on my 528 mhz cliq, but even on that horrible phone it wasnt that bad. On the epic I agree its 99% flawless. If you go through the list of settings after buying it and set it up to your own personal specs, it dosen't use all that much battery.
As for the battery issue, Widgetlocker does cause a service to run all the time that it is enabled, but to be honest after looking at battery stats it dosen't use a whole lot over the course of a normal day. Especially not enough to be a dealbreaker unless your a total minimalist/battery nazi. The guy mentioned above probably have tons of other issues with his phone causing battery life to be ****ty IMO.
I recommend people set the "Root Bypass of 5 second rule" in the advanced options menu, then you dont have to run the icon in the notification bar all the time, nor do you have to use widgetlockers "homehelper" (If you never used it and have no idea what i'm talking about, no worries, just do this if you try it lol)
Other than that though it's great. Have had it on my Epic since day 1 when I installed my apps back. Always worked great. Updates have added some newer looks also. Tons of possibilities. Love love it.
Question for you guys I used it for awhile but even with the 5 sec root bypass it still took about 2-3 seconds for the lock to appear after waking my phone. You guys come across this?

i use it and i havent had that problem. also if you want to theme your slider, there is a thread in the android theme section on how to do it.

[Q] App transition animations are too fast. Any way to change?

Hi fellas,
Don't you realize that the app transition animation speed (entry and exit of apps) are too fast to enjoy?
I can't seem to change this speed, despite using a 3rd party launcher (Nova) nor via the developer settings.
Anyone has changed this, please share. Thanks!

Yup.. like I mentioned in my OP, these settings don't seem to work. Something withing the firmware which is overriding it.
Anyways.. no biggie. I'm sure custom ROMs may open up possibilities..
There's no such thing as "too fast" for me lol
Go to developer options. To unlock them, go to about phone and tap the build number until it tells you that you're a developer. Click on window animation scale and change it to 1.5x or 2x. Do the same for transition animation scale and animator duration scale.

Yeah it'll go slow all right...with lag
WHoa.. all skiming through the thread a bit too quickly eh?
Like I mentioned already, I have meddled with the developer settings...
And the animation is too fast to be even noticed. It's like not having any animation at all. Don't ya think? We got a nice Adreno330 in our phones to exploit..
And yea.. I gave up the S4 due to lag.. lol

3rd Update removed the Lock effect

Haven't totally verified it, but it looks like Samsung took away the Lock effect, watercolor, which gives the nice water sound and lets you splash around the colors on the opening lock screen. Will find out more tomorrow, anyone else experiencing this same option missing ?
another guy in the other ota update thread mentioned the same thing.
I can confirm that it did in fact remove the effect on the lockscreen... What in the world... That was a nice feature. Mind you it lagged beastly for such a powerful device. (Specs sheet wise)
PS: I can definitely see a noticeable difference in speed. It might be just for the time been. But i'll keep you guys posted.
There is something about that water effect that causes more lag than it should. I noticed on my first generation Note 10.1 that disabling it improved speed on the homescreen and even typing. It shouldn't, but it did. When I noticed this I asked two other guys and they were having issues with lag. I told them to disable the water effect. Both also agreed that it improve the speed of the device as a whole.
Doesn't make any sense. I was, however, glad to see the ripple effect gone. It is beautiful though (less the lag)
Why do they take it away...regardless...

If indeed it cause lagged, why not just give the option of the three effects on the lock screen and add, an off feature and let the user of the tablet decide if they want it off or not. They also, have bugs in the high end graphics games crapping out. They also have cause the S-voice to crash when you ask certain questions, they also have contacts created with action memo failing to keep first and last names apart. I will do a video on all this nonsense and post it on youtube. Hopefully, Samsung will see it and respond with some sort of fix for all this stuff, and maybe just maybe they will put back the ripple effect and let us chose if we want it or not. And by the way Samsung if your reading this, your tablet still is laggy at times even with this ripple effect turned off.

almost ready to return tablet ...cant take samsung and the way they do the updates. total disregard for the user, not fixing the real bugs instead taking away a feature that I found to be quite soothing and liked very much. just frustrating company. I will do a video tomorrow and lets see how samsung responds to my doozy of a video.

Ok, well Im wondering what lag you guys are referring to. My point was that all samsung had to do was give an option to turn off, the effect, for those that wanted to, and they could have stated it makes the tablet slightly if any faster. Anyway, Believe it or not, I was able to add it back in for those who like to use it and guess what the lag issues are still fixed. The app is called galaxy locker here is the link and it works like a charm.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lockscreen.galaxy
I wonder if part of the reason for turning it off was for the multiuser cause they needed to make the lock screen more like AOSP?
I thought I was going insane when I turned my tablet on and the watercolor effect was gone. I am hoping they bring it back or at least replace it with something better-looking than the current Tab 3 lock screen.
Do you guys have a slight delay when you press the home button on the note until it lights up to the lockscreen? Mine is smooth are silk once I pass the lock screen but I still have that slightly delay

My has about a 1 second delay. That is a little improved with the last update. I'm all for them taking out the eye candy like that lockscreen effect and focusing on the basic speed and quality of the apps.

Every samsung device I've ever used has this home button delay. Even though the hardware has gotten exponentially faster and the OS has become more and more optimized. At this point it's not a delay anymore, it's a feature.
Lol.. ok cool I was just checking. It's not a big deal. Once you're in I'd say it's definitely snappier since third update

Best animations settings for smoothest M7 Experience

I have concluded this is the best animations settings for Mate 7 for the smoothest experience possible.
I did before set 0.5x on everything but putting 1x on animation duration does work smother cause the GPU can't really handle 0.5x well.. it will cause micro lag.
http://imgur.com/Eq2M7Cq
You need to enable developer options, can you guys try it and see the difference I am talking about ?
For people that have no tried this trick this will simply give you a twice as fast phone you will most likely notice it very much and you will regret it you did not do it sooner!!!
Haven't used any tweaking with the phone yet and after this I must admit that it's really paid off. Thanks:thumbup:
I am glad I did make some one happy
Yes it is a very good tweak. Without it I would have sold my phone long time ago
Im doing this with every phone I have since years it´s a nice trick and one of the first things I do when I get a new phone =)
Just want to make sure not everyone Miss this tweak since it should be default
Or just disable all animations.
The is the fastest, but it very boring without any animations.. some animations is needed I think..
You mean to make it 0.5 or 1x? Mine is already on 1x...

Yeah, 1x is standard, lol. I've never changed it. Always 1x.

G5 performance increase (response time)

I was playing around with a few settings on my G5 today when I thought of something - the real strength of the SD820 SOC lies in its GPU, not the CPU. Low and behold I found that enabling "Force GPU Rendering" shaves several tenths of a second off of the average input-to-response time for just about everything you do on this phone. I know it may use a bit more battery having it on, but the effect is quite striking. To demonstrate the difference, try double tapping to wake your screen without the option enabled and then try again with the option on. You should notice a remarkable jump in response time. Even in launching apps it is a very noticeable gain. Just thought I'd pass this on to those who haven't tried it.
Yup working great for me

You're very welcome!
I think it also saves battery life as it takes stress off the CPU... If rooted install a kernel mngr app and view cpu-freq times... It stays low
And GPU sits just above its lowest freq with normal use.
So your phone stays cooler works faster and gets better battery life! Now just turn down those animations to .5x
And voilà! Better battery life!
The SD820 is truly magnificent and our version doesn't explode!

Do you think it really saves a bit of battery compared to leaving it off? If it does save some battery I think I'll give it a whirl

The OP said it may cause a little extra battery drain, but, I've been using it, and I'll say that battery impact is entirely negligible and the speed of openings apps is extremely noticeable!!
I do however, always have animations turned off when I run any Android device.
Why forsake speed for a little useless animation and battery drain is what I say!!

By offloading all on-screen graphics processing from the CPU (rather than just specified instances like in the case of 3D graphics), it is able to save valuable process time and thus respond to user commands more quickly. There is definitely a real difference here.
Thanks for the tip. This helped me. And I noticed the difference too. :victory:
Force GPU rendering: This setting forces apps to use hardware 2D rendering, even if they were written to not use it. It can make things look great, or it can temporarily bork your phone. Use with care. (link)
GPU consumes more power the CPU, hence you may observe 5-15% lower battery life with option enabled. (link)
---------- Post added at 04:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:52 PM ----------
Also most apps that support it have it enabled in the settings. It's off by default for battery life and compatibility issues, including making some games slower as they optimise between what to pass to GPU and not. Setting the flag overrides these optimisations.
In theory couldn't it make the phone run cooler though?

I got my phone last week on friday . It came with the software version v10c . I got 6 hours sot and the phone did not heat up without gpu rendering beeing enabled . On sataurday i updated to v10i and the phone got really hot that day and on sinday too . I tried to install v10d via Lg up but failed at it . I enabled force gpu rendering today and my device didnt get hot anymore . I am sitting at 75% with 2 hours screen on time . I was mostly on XDA and was using chrome . So i dont think , that the battery life decreases if you enable force gpu rendering .
