So how do I turn this alert off.
Problem is that it wakes the whole house at night when I leave phone chargeing.
As I understand it, it is in the same category of signals as an SMS.
Do want to hear when SMS received.
I have gone through the menus 101 times.
There are 2 things.
1 is default notification. Settings->Sound->notifications (The notification center)
2 is the sound each application will give when notified. This overrides the 1
If the app has been set to default (which it normally is) then it tell the phone to sound the default notification as defined in 1
So in your case go to 1 and make it silent (this will silence all notification even full charge one. ringtone is not effected)
Now since u still want SMS/GMAIL/Calendar etc to notify. Open those apps, go to their settings and select the sound you want to hear when they want to notify. Just open them and press menu, select settings and see notification options and configure it in the app itself to sound whatever notification you want to hear. In my case SMS/Gmail/K9/GV/Calendar etc have different sounds so I know if it needs immediate attention.
THANK YOU, I would never have figured this out myself.
Followed your description, and I'm sure it works.
When an alert, such as a text message, facebook message, or calendar alarm triggers on my Nexus 4 (5.0.1 lollipop, all stock no root), no sound is generated. The LED blinks and the phone vibrates (which is nice) but the audible alert is missing. The ringtone thankfully works, as well as my alarm clock and pandora, so I know that the speakers are operational. I checked every setting I can locate in reference to notifications, including volume settings, notification tones, app notification settings, and so on. Priority and Silent are NOT selected, volume is basically at max, and I have custom tones set up for mostly every app that will allow me to select one. No apps have notifications suppressed. The tones work when I select them in the menu, and the problem does not seem to care what specific tone is used.
The phone was factory reset Saturday (2 days ago) when I switched to it from my last device. Any insight as to what I should check next?
update: i rebooted into safe mode and was successfully able to get notifications when i sent myself a text from another number and an email. google rep recommended i remove apps one by one until notifications work again, since it was seemingly a problem with one of the third party apps. but of course, after i boot the phone into regular mode, it works fine will monitor and update thread if i lose notifications again.
tl;dr reboot your phone before you make a post lol
I used to be able to see who SMS Texts were actually from on the lock screen with my S6. Now that I have the S8, it only shows that I have an SMS message and it won't show me who it's from unless I actually go into the Messages App? How do I make the sender visible on the lock screen?

Go to settings -> Lock screen and security -> Notifications -> make sure it's on , then go into that menu and make sure you do not have Hide content or notification icons only turned on - also make sure the toggle for all apps is turned on too
Also you have to be using the crappy stock Samsung Messages app, otherwise you won't get that little bubble notification or the edge screen light up. Was very annoyed to see both of those things disabled from working if you use Android Messages or any other app.

I went to Settings > Lock screen and security > Notifications (which is turned on) and then into that menu. In that menu I have the "Hide Content" toggle turned off - the "Notification icons only - Hide notification details and show only the icon" toggle turned off. The toggle for "All Apps" is On. But when I get a SMS message, it only shows "Messages" on the lock screen... not who it's actually from like it used to do with my Galaxy S6. What am I doing wrong?

Not anymore - Textra jsut updated last night and it has the option for Android heads up notification (ie Edge lighting) so you can choose which style.
Jsut tested and it works perfectly

Ever figure this out? I can't. I have done all of the above and gone into the message app and allowed for content to be displayed and gone into the always on display and allowed for content to be displayed. I am using the native message app. I still just get a message icon on my lock screen. No content. Super frustrating!
Reset all setting

I has the same issue. I had googled a million times. Finally had a bright idea.... Go to setting > about phone > down at the bottom should say reset > reset all settings.
This doesn't erase your phone, only sets it back to default stiff like background, notifications, ringtones etc. BUT it finally shows the messages!
Any other suggestions on this? I've tried everything in this thread, including resetting my settings to default. Driving me nuts. After being on the pixel for the past 7 months until now, I've gotten very used to being able to see previews on the lock screen and replying from the lock screen too. I have all the appropriate settings checked that should be allowing me to see previews, but it doesn't. All I want is for the screen to briefly wake up when a text comes through, and to be able to preview it. Is this supposed to be possible on the S8?

SAME ISSUES HERE -- samsung s8/t-mobile
it seems as though the "show content" option for notifications has disappeared on the Samsung S8... I've tried everything i can think of and searched several boards and come up unsuccessful... the only options for notifications on a lock screen (at least for me - Samsung S8 on t-mobile) are: :hide content" or "do not show notifications".. both of which are not helpful when attempting to view the sender's name while hiding their actual text... HELP!
It works on textra under settings then customise notifications then at the bottom u will see privacy settings in there u can have it to show contact but hide message. Hope that's what you wanted. Cheers.

The only way I found to get to the lock screen and view/reply to text message is to double tap the home button first.
It's anoying additional step, but I'm trying to get used to it.

I am not sure if you have found a fix for this or not but.... Last week I accidentally factory reset my phone and lost everything. I still had my old phone and was able to transfer all that was there back over, but my screen stopped lighting up with new notifications. After spending the last hour trying to fix it I was successful!
Settings > Apps> Messages > gear icon above Force Stop > About Messages > update
I really hope this helps others.
Forgive the book, but hopefully this helps some of you.
May 2018 I bought a samsung galaxy s8 and I set up all my notifications the way I wanted and at first was happy. Then there came an update, so I did the update. Then I realized that my "Messaging" notification sound was set as the regular system default sound instead of my favorite dewdrop, so I went into the Apps section, selected "Messages/Notifications/General Notifications & New Messages/Sound" and changed it to "dewdrops". For those of you that dont know, you can set the "Importance" for both "General Notifications & New Messages". Originally I had the importance set to "Urgent" for my messages.
...you need to stay with me here...
So after the update, when I would first get a message, the notification would be the default system sound instead of my "dewdrop" sound. After much poking around and looking for where I went wrong, I found a couple of interesting things as well as a bug.
Interesting thing: Like I said, instead of 'dewdrop' when I got a new message, I heard the system default but then after the initial notification, I would hear 'dewdrop' as a reminder that I had a message. Weird. One app giving two different notification sounds eh? Upon further poking, I realized that the initial / first notification is considered an "Urgent system alert" with a high priority, therefore it is using the "default notification sound" instead of the "messenger sound", sOOOoooo I went back into the Apps section, selected"Messages/Notifications/General Notifications & New Messages" and changed the "Importance" for both "General Notifications & New Messages" from "Urgent" to "High". Now when I get a new message, I hear my favorite "dewdrops" instead of the system default.
Bug: It appears that when I first got my phone, there was the ability to go into "Settings / Sounds and vibration / Notification sounds" and that you would see three options to set the "Default notification sound", the "Messages notification sound" and the "Calendar notifications" sound. Here is where I originally set all three of these to the system default. Today (after the update) the screen that shows the three settings is now gone and is replaced with one simply sound selection. I no longer have the ability to select individual sounds for "default" "messages" and "calendar". The example shown in this youtube video shows what it USED to look like at marker 00:26 which is now gone, and instead you go right to what is seen at marker 00:34.

I am unable to disable Group notifications and Message notifications under Chats. This setting is under Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notifications > Whatsapp. If I disable after some time I find slider is again green and notifications show up. Is there no permanent way to disable notifications as sometimes notifications are annoying as they keep filling up on the home page. Thanks
You can disable the notifications completely under Apps & notifications -> notifications and choosing the app you wish and turning off notifications as a whole or turn it off for specific category.
Hi. Ya thats what I have done. If you read my query I have disabled group and regular notifications yet after some time it shows up under notifications and when I go to check settings they revert back to allowed (Green Dot). It says as Grey Dot only for some time. Is this an issue with all android devices or specific to this device?
you can just disable the notification entirely in the application setting.
