FireTV Stick vs FireTV vs Nexus Player - Battle of Wireless - Fire TV General

Received my fire stick today and as most of you the first theing i did was installed xbmc. I must say there is a huge difference in wifi speeds between the FireTv Stick and the Fire TV.
I have a Netgear r8000 triband router capable of AC speeds.
I Setup an ftp server on each box (fire stick, firetv and nexus player) and trasnsfered a 6.8GB movie.
FireTV (Over 802.11n 5GHZ Wifi)
2.53MB/s
FireTV Stick(Over 802.11n 5GHZ Wifi)
1.41MB/s
Nexus Player (Over 802.11ac 5GHZ Wifi)
3.58MB/s
My collection is mostly Bluray REMUX stored on my Synology 1812+ NAS, files are normally 20GB files and the Nexus Player was the only one able to play the file over wifi without drops. FireTV did a really good job on my MKV fles that didnt exceed 12GB but the real disappointment was the fire stick which buffered on crappy YIFY 1080p files (1.8GB).

Can you elaborate on how you set up the FTP services?
I feel like the slow speeds on the FireTV Stick is because you can't root, and probably had to use something like ES File Explorer, which is notorious for being slow. Where as on the other devices you CAN root, and install real bits and run the FTP server without the OS overhead.
Just interested.

Root was not required, I installed FTP Server Ultimate from the play store and used sftp on all three devices. Root had nothing to do with the speeds.

Well, the speed difference seems to just about right, although your speeds seem slower than they should be.
Of course the NP is going to be the fastest with AC wireless and Intel CPU.
As far as the difference between the AFTV and Stick, that's also to be expected since the Stick has a less powerful SoC which is going to be it's bottleneck.
As for streaming though, I've streamed full BD rips (40GB @36Mb/s) without any issues.

I got different result.

Test a bigger file, the one i tested was 13GB. I'll run my tests again. I even setup its own SSID so nothing else would interfere

Multisync - synce & bluetooth; the missing step

Hello,
I'd like to sync contact contacts, calendar, files with Linux and my Qtek s100 (xda-mini), i followed various howtos with not complete results.
Last working step is that I'm able to ping my pocketpc via bluetooth:
Code:
l2ping 00:09:2D:4E:E8:D3
Ping: 00:09:2D:4E:E8:D3 from 00:10:60:A9:89:86 (data size 20) ...

94 bytes from 00:09:2D:4E:E8:D3 id 1 time 49.33ms
94 bytes from 00:09:2D:4E:E8:D3 id 2 time 30.01ms
94 bytes from 00:09:2D:4E:E8:D3 id 3 time 38.99ms

accessing device from desktop (activesync)

Hi,
I have a magician, and I have problems with the network passthrough (activesync on USB) for a year (ip worked, but not DNS resolution). I just upgraded to ActiveSync 4.1, and suddenly the passthrough works fine, great!
Now for my next step -- how can I access my device from my desktop pc? As far as I can see I can't get any route to 198.168.55.101 (device' ip) and there is no interface for that visible in ipconfig. Host is running XPsp2 (no firewall).
My ultimate goal is to experiment with a VNC server on the device.
Any input/comments are welcome! Thanks!
i never finished my trial...
but i get the following to run:
On DesktopPC bind a listen Socket on 127.0.0.1 TCP Port 123.
On PocketPC connect a socket to 192.168.55.100 TCP Port 123.
The 192.168.55.100 and 101 IPs are only for the Serial communication.
I currenty don´t know how to access this directly, but i don´t think that you have to do this. Loopback works fine.
I did not try the other direction, but i think it would also work fine.
So how would one do this in practice?

Windows 8/7 Aero isues.

I have an Alienware m17 r1 with the Core 2 Extreme Q3000 processor and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD3870X2 graphics card.
Let me start off by saying that Windows Vista works great with no issues at all.
Windows 8: Has a probelm that when I resume from sleep (open the laptop lid) everything just goes bizerk. I can't log in because the screen keeps on flickering on and off and what not. So I have to manually power down and reboot to get things working straight. After a reboot or fresh boot, everything works perfectly including games and stuff. It is important to not that there are no graphics card drivers for my graphics card for Windows 8, but as you will see with how Windows 7 acts, I don't think thats the issue.
Windows 7: I thought Windows 8 was what was causing the issues, so I downloaded a copy of Windows 7 Enterprise trial. Everything worked fine, I installed all the Windows 7 drivers for my laptop including the most up to date graphics card drivers. I closed the lid, opened it again, and bam, Aero stops working. And I can't fix it. And I also can't use the IE or some other applications. So I reinstalled Windows a few more times once without any graphics drivers except for the Windows one and once with the Alienware provided Windows 7 drivers and still the issue occurs. It also occurs after a fresh boot withouth logging in, closing the lid, and opening it and logging in.
I'm not exactly sure what it going on, although I'm sort of ruling out graphics drivers because in Windows Vista everything works perfectly. I was thinking about disconnecting the CrossFire cable to see if one of my graphics cards is the one having any issues, but I wanted your input first to see what the problem might be.
Other m17 owners seem to have Windows 7 running smoothly, but in my case its just not working.
I should also note that the first time I installed Windows 8, I used up the whole harddrive and eveything was working fine. And then a week later that issue started to happen. I then installed Windows Vista and everything was back to working order. I then decided to dualboot Windows 7 and Aero would just turn off after resuming from sleep. I haven't tried Installing Windows 7 on the whole harddrive yet because I don't think that would fix anything. Currently I'm back to Windows Vista on the whole harddrive. I also have a different BIOS that allows overclocking installed, but the system is not overclocked but rather undervolted from 1.2 to 1.186 if I remember correctly.
Here are the complete specs of the system from My Alienware PC Information:

That didn't fix it. I reinstalled Windows and tried it.
Actually that command didn't help. I used powercfg -h off . I tries both on and off and Aero still disables. This is in Windows 7 by the way.

Do a clean uninstall of your video drivers with something like driver sweeper then reinstall the latest ATI drivers.
If you've tried drivers id strongly suggest you start the way all "odd" tech issues are diagnosed.
Rip out anything none essential, including cross fire, bare bones and start from scratch.
If that works then start adding stuff back in.
if it didn't work then your issue is in whats left, most likely graphics or Moby related, but get back to us after doing the above and we'll go from there.

I had already tried all that driver stuff before.
Since it's a laptop, I decided to remove the CrossFire cable to no avail and then I started realizing that CrossFire wasn't actually working to begin with. I had noticed it before, but I didn't investigate further. I tried to reseat the CrossFire cable multiple times to no avail. The one time it did work, I restarted the computer and the second card disappeared.
So I hit some other forums for more info and one said that if I was having CrossFire issues, I should flash a different BIOS. So I flashed the stock Alienware BIOS and bam! Aero got fixed. So that got rid of that problem. Although I'm still stuck with no CrossFire. Removing the cable and putting it back in 10 or so times will get the second card to show up and then disappear again after a restart. According to my understanding, two cards have to show up in device manager when CrossFire is "working". So thats the only problem I have now, otherwise I've been using Windows 7 Enterprise for 2 days now playing Saints Row: The Third for a solid 5 hours with no crashes or anything. Although I'm still missing out on the performance of the second card.
Any ideas to troubleshooting this?

Possibly the drivers?
I have three different machines with sort of similar problems. The Aero basically ****s up. It seems to be an issue with the latest ATI Drivers. I am using the version 11 I believe not the latest. That seems to be helping.

In Windows Vista the latest drivers worked fine. I haven't tried the latest ones on this computer yet, but my desktop does have the latest and it works just fine.

Oh, I should have mentioned that I am running windows 7 on all three.

[Q] Kodi 1080p buffer issues

Hi all,
I installed Kodi (ARM) - Helix (kodi-14.0-Helix-armeabi-v7a) and encounter performance/buffering issues with movie (MKV) files > 5 GB. This issue occurs within the first minute and so on. Files which are less then 5GB seem to run fine. From reading on this forum and other posts on the internet Kodi should be able to play those files without buffering issues.
My Nexus Player is connected via USB -> Ethernet hub (i initialy ran via Wifi). My movies/series are stored on my Synology NAS 213J (latest DSM). I use NFS to connect to my NAS.
Netflix and Youtube seem to run without issues whatsoever, so i don't think the connection is the issue.
I already tried the following:
- Unchecked 'MediaCodec' in the advanced video settings. This results in the following behaviour: when i try to open a file it closed Kodi instead and i am back to the main menu of the Nexus player
Please note that i am new to using Kodi. Am i using the correct version of Kodi? Can i alter something in the advancedsettings.xml? And if so, what settings should i use? Or is there another thing i could try?
Please let me know if i can provide a log-file (and how to get one ).
Thanks in advance for the help.
Update: i notice the following error in the kodi log: CDVDMediaCodecInfo::ReleaseOutputBuffer ExceptionOccurred render(1)
Update from my own investigation:
Seems to be related to the ethernet connection after all. I sideloaded the speedtest.net app and notice i only get 5Mbps speed through ethernet (connection should be atleast 80Mbps connected to the internet). I think 5Mbps wont cut it for 1080p mkv's.
I use this USB -> RJ45 cable: BobjGear USB to RJ45 Compact Fast Ethernet Adapter made for Android Tablets (bought from Amazon. I cant post the link since i am a new user). Is this cable the bottle neck?
If so, do you guys have a suggestion in what other USB -> Ethernet connector i should use (europe seller prefered)?
Thanks!

Shield ability to write to NAS using NFS

Hi,
I have a couple questions about the Shield TV writing to NAS, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
My network set up is gigabit. I have Virgin Media 350MB Vivid cable connection and all my mains fed devices are wired.
My VM Hub 3 is set in modem mode, connected to an Asus RT-AC87U AC2400 gigabit router (all ports used) which feeds 2 Netgear gigabit 8 port switches, my Asustor AS5002T NAS, and another router set up as a switch for Wi-Fi extension upstairs.
One of the 8 port switches feeds my media devices (TV, TiVo V6 (with LAN), AV Receiver, Blue ray, Droidbox T8, WDTV Live , Mede8er MED800X3D) with no problems - everything works great.
I'm looking to buy the Shield TV 16GB which should make the WDTV Live, Mede8er streamer and Droidbox T8 redundant (hopefully). I think most things on the Shield will work fine but I'm not sure about it being able to write to my NAS.
My NAS is an Asustor AS5002T and has 2 internal 6TB WD Reds set as separated drives and formatted as EXT4, these hold everything (all media, backup for everyone in the house, PC backup images for all my PC's and Laptops). My Media (Movie, TV series, Pictures, home movies etc) is stored in 2 folders on 1 6TB Red (Media 1 and Media 2) I also have 2 4TB WD My Passport's connected to the USB3 ports with NTFS formatting which I use to back up my Media 1 and 2 folders only.
Both Media locations (WD Red and WD Passport) are shared and accessible via my WDTV Live and Mede8er but I only use the Mede8er to scrape metadata information which is then stored on my NAS.
Q1 - can the Shield write this scraped information to the NAS, I use NFS sharing for both my streamers and have had no problems saving scraped data to the relevant folders once scanned with them?
I only scrape my Media1 and Media2 folders on the WD Red drive (with Ext4 formatting) I then have some file comparison backup software to backup onto the WD Passports. All works well.
I have read that the Shield (Android) is unable to write to NTFS partitions over the network and was wondering if Ext4 is any different?
If I can't write data over the network from the shield to the NAS it looks like the only option would be to use the inbuilt movie and picture app, SPMC or Kodi to write the scraped data to an onboard memory location if this is possible (I have no experience with the built in app and very little experience with SPMC and Kodi) but if this is an option I don't mind the learning curve ahead.
Question 2 - all my devices are connected through my Onkyo AV Receiver, is there any issue with the Shield and AV Receiver connections?
sorry for long post, though it better to give as much info as possible...
Hello friend of ShieldTV
Did you get this fixed @greig2000uk ?
I have similar problem:
I have two ShieldTV (2017 / 16GB / 8.0.1) and both are rootet with Magisk.
But i can not WRITE to my attached network storage (NAS) for security reason.
Did you (or anybody) know how to get this fixed?
Some apps (handled by plex) should be allowed to write to my NAS (i did not test this, because this would not solve my problem).
I need WRITE ACCESS for ALL of my installed apps (or even choose some specific apps for myself).
So - if you get this problem managed, pls let us know how to fix this limitation
thank you !!
Hi
Format your NAS drives as EXT4
Set shared folders to allow admin privelages under "Access Control" for read and write
Set apps or network places accessing the NAS with static IP's in your LAN DHCP server
Set NFS priveleges (for the above devices) with the static IP's of your LAN DHCP server for read and write access
hope this helps
