accessing device from desktop (activesync) - Networking

Hi,
I have a magician, and I have problems with the network passthrough (activesync on USB) for a year (ip worked, but not DNS resolution). I just upgraded to ActiveSync 4.1, and suddenly the passthrough works fine, great!
Now for my next step -- how can I access my device from my desktop pc? As far as I can see I can't get any route to 198.168.55.101 (device' ip) and there is no interface for that visible in ipconfig. Host is running XPsp2 (no firewall).
My ultimate goal is to experiment with a VNC server on the device.
Any input/comments are welcome! Thanks!

i never finished my trial...
but i get the following to run:
On DesktopPC bind a listen Socket on 127.0.0.1 TCP Port 123.
On PocketPC connect a socket to 192.168.55.100 TCP Port 123.
The 192.168.55.100 and 101 IPs are only for the Serial communication.
I currenty don´t know how to access this directly, but i don´t think that you have to do this. Loopback works fine.
I did not try the other direction, but i think it would also work fine.

So how would one do this in practice?

Widcom stack bonus! Wireless Networking(OT- not GPS related)

Hi all,
I've been following the Widcom port across to the XDA-II, not because I want to attach a GPS, but because of the much expanded feature set.
I installed the BluetoothGPS.zip file, then activated all the new services offered by the phone.
I have a Belkin F8T001 USB Adapter in my broadband PC. I want to use BT to surf the net from the XDA without paying O2. Trouble is, my Belkin doesn't provide an Activesync Profile, so it can't be done. Until now, that is.
Belkin USB adapters offer a 'Network Access' service. The Widcom stack now allows the XDA to wireless network with my PC, map drives with Resco Explorer, surf the net without the bother of Activesync, oh, and Activesync over BT Wireless LAN if you like. The PC acts very much like a WiFi access point.
Another excellent bonus is the ability to browse the PDA with the BT 'File Transfer' Service. This is easier than browsing through Activesync, as you can open picture files directly without having to transfer them to the PC first.
Nice one guys, well done!

And where can I download these drivers ?
Sounds like a solution. Where????

is there a current url for an up to date version of the widcomm stack which can be directly installed?
PAN vs LAP Bluetooth Profile on XDA / iMate
G'day All,
Thanks for the post on Net access - It's not as easy as it looks (having spent AGES getting iPAQs working with Bluetooth Dongles (BTW: You DO need 1.3.2.7 of the Widcomm Stack on XP to make PAN connections work!!!
My question is:
Has anyone managed to work out how to get PAN or LAP Network Bluetooth access going on an XDA II??
I can easily get a PAN network access connection going on an iPAQ 5550 (with the identical Widcomm stack version) - On the XDA II with the Widcomm stack installed, it defaults to a LAP profile... (Using BT Null Modem). I can't get this method working with internet access.
If I connect XP to the iMate, then the PAN driver is used on the PDA - BUT I can't get any traffic through (this is the same on the iPaq and the iMate).
Anyone got any clues / hints for me, please?!?! (ROM versions etc are latest).
Cheers.

Hi,
I'd same the problem, but since I enabled service Personal Network Sever, then at PC side connect to Xda II, it's working, I can ping from / to Xda II.
(enable service by start > setting > bluetooth > from File Transfer to Personal Network Server, I checked them all)
But it's problem to connect via Xda II to PC, then I restarted PC and PPC and make new shortcut of PC Network Access.
Now it's working I can use Resco file explorer to map driver of PC share folder and get access to file. But it's seem unstable because it's hang sometime.
ps: Thank so much to the great person who made bluetoothgps.zip.

bluetooth zip file not available anymore
I tried the url, but is is not responding anymore with ftp and the username and password. Has anyone it for me??
I'd very much like to get hold of this file as well, same problem - user/pass doesn't work anymore.
Probably don't need another "me too" but I have been searching for this stack high and low! Please let us know where we can get it!
Immense thanks!
I have BluetoothGPS.zip (about 2Megs zipped) give me somewhere to upload it & i will.
That's a shame, it used to be on ftp://hydrosphere:[email protected]/ but it's gone now. I've obviously got it, but I'm damned if I'm hosting it as it's 'unlicenced software'.
Any suggestions?
As acurtis007 pointed out, it's not easy to do this even on the correct PDA. If you do get hold of the Widcom stack, you need to understand networking and a little voodoo to surf the net.
One advantage is that the BT Dongle in your PC becomes like an access point. You no longer have to set up an Activesync Partnership, so a PC can be logged in as anybody, and any PDA(s) can surf.
Here's the way to get Surfing over BT using proper IP NAT:
Your XP PC
Your installed BT Dongle should offer a Local Service called 'Network Access'. This should be started automatically, and creates a 'Bluetooth LAN Access Server' interface in your Network Connections. This is the important bit: Activate 'Internet Connection Sharing' on your LAN Card. Select the Bluetooth LAN Adapter as the Interface you want to share with. If you don't have a LAN card, then share whatever interface connects to the Internet.
If your LAN Card already has an ip address that starts with 192.168.0. then you're out of luck. You'll have to change the entire setup of your LAN to another Subnet. I chose 192.168.50.x, which is fine.
If you have correctly activated ICS, your BT LAN Interface will have the IP address 192.168.0.1, and your Internet device will have a hand under it's Icon.
You're XP PC is now ready to accept Bluetooth surfers - both of the Internet and your LAN.
The XDA-II
Bung in the Widcom Stack
Run the Lovely new Bluetooth Connection Wizard and Explore. You'll see a PC icon appear, tap it. You should be offered a range of services, depending on what make of BT Dongle you have. Select 'Network Access'. A Shortcut appears. Hold the stylus down on the Icon, and select Connect from the pop-up. You will have to do the PIN thing as you connect the 2 devices. The XDA's Bluetooth Null Modem then connects to the PC, and hello broadband.
The stack is very stable. I've been using it for 2 weeks now every day for both surfing and file transfers.
It's not perfect - beware
This is a hack, and therefore does not operate entirely correctly:
You will ALWAYS get an error message when first initialising the new stack. I'm used to it: Start Bluetooth - it fails; Start Bluetooth again - it runs. This happens every time, and I just live with it. Once it's up, I can surf till the battery dies.
You will need to reset your XDA-II's Connection Settings (Advanced - Select Networks) back to 'My ISP' where it says 'Programs that....Internet..'
Others on this forum have reported that the XDA's sound gets disabled when you uninstall the Widcom cab file. I haven't had cause to do this as I'm 100% keeping it. This is the advice I've seen posted:
"Uninstalling Widcom Stack
If you have the Widcom stack go to the WIDCOM BT-manager Audio gateway tab and Disable this before uninstalling. Sound should then remain actve."
So there you go - it works a treat.

If you want a bit of fun, try this:
Get yer Widcom network access up 'n' running
Put a TV Tuner Card into the PC with the BT Dongle attached, and hook up your Sky Box to the TV Card.
Download the free 'Microsoft Media Encoder'
Using Media Encoder, Run a Live Broadcast, and select 'Pocket PC Widescreen' as the target audience. Your Sky Box output (or whatever) is now being converted into a TCP/IP Stream at the sort of data rate your XDA can handle.
To watch Sky on your XDA all round the house, run Media Player on your XDA and enter the url http://192.168.0.1:80 (assuming you're connected via BT). You can also do this with a Webcam, and remotely monitor it full screen on your PDA.

sorry i forgot i could just attached it
Enjoy
It works
@ArcticCat
Thank you! (I nearly was loosing hope!)
1000 kisses, beers or whatever...

Thanks I could kiss you all.
now for the winge.
As the XDA connects to the LAN over a BT null modem. It seems to be quite slow.
Is this due to the settings of the modem restricted to 11500 baud rate limit for the hardware?
Whilst i am at it. let me throw this in the works.
The XDAII connects via BT to a PC on the network. I can browse the network from the PC. But i can only browse the files on the PC that i am directly connected to via BT from the XDA as well as access the internet. Is this normal?
IP address is 192.168.0.1 on BT adapter. The LAN connection of the PC is 192.168.11.5 ( auto ip).
all other PCs on the network are in the 192.168.11.x range.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

I found out that the speed networking over BT is slower than expected. Any others having problems for repaly MP3s on their XDA. I think the max speed over BT is 1MBit. Whith all protocol things you schould get min 500kBit. But I have problems playing MP3s with mor than 192kBit, The XDE "feels" very slow. - any ideas?

Oorbz: To conect to your home LAN you need to set up a Networking bridge (Because your network is devided in 2 segments). Using windows xp its included. Mark both network adapter and choose "Network bridge". After that you only configure the bridge and both networks are conected under one subnet mask. Sometimes BT-Adapters are not fully compatible with the network bridge. Then you need to do 2 little steps:
On the console type in:
Code:
netsh bridge show adapter
then type in
Code:
netsh bridge set adapter # forcecompatmode=enable
# stands for the Number of your BT Adapter.
Thats it. Now you have access to your complete LAN and NAT-Router. Using a fix IP on your XDA will speed up the start of the conection, but DHCP works fine too. All computers whould now have an IP from the same subnet liek 192.168.0.# / 255.255.255.0.
PS using a WLAN adapter some drivers need this settings too in order to work with the windows XP networking bridge.

Hi
You mentioned the Belkin BT adaptor. That is about 30 odd pounds. Are all BT adaptors the same? i.e. do they just implement some version of the protocol? Seems the Belkin one implements v1.1.
How about this one, will it also do the job?
http://www.qtds.com/code/products.asp?recid=621&
Costs about 15 pounds, so much cheaper
btw, if your laptop already has BT built in, do you need to buy a dongle?

Activesync not working with USB ? solution here...

Hi,
I was told by some good friend of mine on this forum that the reason activesync 4.1 doesnt work with USB is due to some firewall issue. Well, it turned out to be true. In my case the native windows xp sp2 firewall was coming inbetween the process.
Initially, I just disabled the firewall and very thing worked fine. But since this is not a good idea, I got some details about what updating the exception list to have activesync connections pass through firewall.
Code:
Include files:
wcesmgr.exe
wcescomm.exe
rapimgr.exe
Include TCP ports:
990
999
5678
5721
26675
Include UDP ports:
5679
With this everything should be fine.

Universal and a Bluetooth Network

Hi, I'm pretty inexperienced with using bluetooth networks, but I think that it should be possible.
I have a bluetooth dongle attached to my PC which works, no I want to join the network using my PDA.
I tried it on Gentoo Linux, using the hciconfig, hcitool and rfcomm utilities.
But I just cannot get it to work.
This is what I tried to do:
Code:
hades ~ # hciconfig hci0 up
hades ~ # hcitool scan
Scanning ...
00:28:0F:6F:9D:7A Nokia 6111
00:42:67:B1:F5:E3 Universal
hades ~ # rfcomm bind 0 00:12:37:B1:C5:E3 1
After that, I switched to my device, and went to:
Start->Settings->Connections->Bluetooth->Devices
And tried to connect to my workstation.
It is discovered all right. By selecting it and proceeding, I can enter a PIN on both sides.
After that, I can select the services my workstation offers (none), so I just click on "Finish".
I also tried the other way, using "rfcomm connect" and "hcitool auth". There was even a reaction on the PDA site, but I still wasn't able to reach my workstation by any means.
How does this work at all?
I basically want to use putty or VNC to connect to my workstation and control my music player. I dual boot windows, so I'd be fine with a windows solution for this as well.
Excuse my noobieness, but I have been searching the last two days and couldn't get any further than this.

Please do follow my articles, I've explained all the BT PAN (Personal Area Network)-related issues at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282780
In a nutshell: if you have an AKU3 ROM on your Univ AND you also have GPRS subscription, you can connect via BT PAN. Otherwise, you must use Wi-Fi p2p.

Remote Desktop

hy
can anybody tell me how can i set the connection
becouse when i connect to my pc through usb it show that tha account is not
set up (on the remote windows srceen)
and is there any BT REMOTE progz????
thanx
remote desktop is a protokoll in windows 2k and newer!
you must enable it on you host and it works via network connections ... usb too if you have setup your xp to accept connecten over usb.
the remote of windows is too bad
I use z2remote 1.2 good one I think
the connection. activecyunc what ever connced with, bt wifi usb, internet too
You must right click on "My Computer" then Properties then remote desktop tab to make sure that the remote desktop is on.
You also must know your computer name or its IP Address.
All I have to do is when I open the remote desktop on my 818Pro. I just typed in my computer name and it will connect me right away.
I'm not sure if you can use USB through Activesync though. I use wireless at home.
Hope this helps.

USB/Serial (RS232) over IP to Windows PC

Hello,
with the USB to Serial Adapter, connected to the Phone its possible to open a Terminal Programm and have access to the for example Cisco Console.
I look for a solution to have remote access to this console.
I am not looking for a "Remote Desktop" solution like. Teamviewer, etc.
I have in mind something like usb-device connected via IP to my windows pc, or terminal-server that translate the RS232-connection to IP and I can access via Telnet, SSH, etc.
Has anyone an idea how to do this ? ...or is there yet an APP for this, I havent found yet ?
Setup:
[Router](RS232)<->[Serial-to-USB-Adapter]<->[Android-Device] - - - Network (Wifi/Internet] - - - [Windows-PC](Terminal-Programm like TerraTerm/Putty)
Kind regards

Uhmm probaly an adapter but you need to figure out the color combo for the wires on the connectors and the right port and frequency.
Rs232 is a print input for livelogging and configuring a print.
Ssh over rs232 ternimal is mostly disabled.
So ues rs232 to usb or rj45 aka lan is possible with these conditions.
For pc
Right usb com. For usb.
Right adapter settings like ip and dns for lan adapter.
In putty
Right port.
Right ip. Aka print identyfier. Ussualy can be find by combining specific nummers on the print
Right plugin running on win7 and 10. Audio recorder ussualy works.
Right wiring order in the 2 connectors. Ussualy on the adapter you can use dipswitches or program it on the pc.
Then u will have admin control over all things the print supports.
