Remote function while using chromecast say? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the play pause function on the remote work while casting something to the player? After playing with a fire stick I figured out all I really want is a chromecast with a standalone remote.

Mele F10-PRO IR Remote Control

Ordered one of these from Amazon this morning. Will have it tonight. Anyone else using one? Saw someone using it with their FTV in a video last night.
Mele F10-PRO 2.4G Air Mouse Wireless Keyboard 2 in 1 Intelligent Voice with IR Remote Control for PC TV Media Player
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DHEUBPA
Strange there is no Accessories section for the FTV here and that there has yet to be a single post in the Themes and Apps section.
Got the same remote for the ftv. Not really happy with how it works with the ftv os. Im hoping someday some dev will make a vanilla android rom for the ftv.

Use of it is kind of hit or miss, tried it primarily for XBMC which I had yet to get working with my win box media center. The keyboard was useful until you do a password and can't tell if cap is on or not.
Used plex and it did what I was trying to get XBMC to do, access to all of my media files on my primary workstation

i was the guy in the video, i love the mele pro f10. and the reason why caps dont work is not because of the mele pro its because that is a know bug in xbmc frodo versions. use the esc and back button on the keyboard side to navigate in xbmc. you'll get use to it and what i love is because it acts like a keyboard it will work if we ever get a custom recovery like clockworkmod. At least it worked fined on my ouya and madcatz mojo.

Any chance you can link that video? Maybe expand some on the use of the remote? I'm hunting for a remote that can control the FTV and TV on/off, volume. I need one that will also work with an IR repeater so FLIRC might be of the list.
Thanks.
keymap for MELE F10
Hi
I'm brand new to XBMC/Amazon fire TV, which arrived this week, and have the MELE F10 controller in the post. Really impressed with both xbmc and the Fire TV. I'm wondering if anyone here managed to get the microphone on the MELE working with the amazon search? Also are there any keymap files available and.or how easy it to make one up myself?
Thanks
Andy

fire tv xmbc streaming from pc

Is it possible to setup xmbc on fire tv to work as xbmc player and all heavy transcoding work be done by my htpc - especially dts in mkv files. I know plex can do it but for some reason im not a big on plex
As far as I'm aware, no. As you mentioned, plex is probably the best option for this. The other option, what I did, was transcode all my videos to a FireTV/Roku friendly format. I used HandbrakeCLI (command line version of Handbrake) on a Linux box. Just kicked off the command and let it run for a week or two. It took a long time, but not a lot of effort. Just spot check them then delete the originals that had been transcoded once a day. Now I have my entire DVD/Bluray collection in a more compatible, can play on pretty much anything, format and I can't tell the difference in quality. Ok, if I had both versions playing side by side and switched audio between them I might be able to tell the difference, but I don't notice anything when watching.

Plex on the FireTV can't handle DTS or AC3 5.1. If you don't want stereo you'll need to remux to mp4/aac audio. XBMC can handle mkv/dts without any transcoding. Just enable pass-thru audio and you are good, assuming your receiver can handle the audio.
Pretty detailed thread here: https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/111666-firetv-surround-sound/

So you saying I cant do DTS even when my htpc (with plex server) does transocing for plex player on fire tv ?
This box would be great if it had xmbc streaming client/player like yatse

No, I'm saying you need to sideload XBMC. You can stream from any number of servers including PMS without transcoding. See here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Amazon_Fire_TV and here: http://www.aftvnews.com/tag/guide/

Is your fireTV connected to an audio receiver? If so, and it can decode DTS and DD5.1, can't you just stream from the NAS to XBMC on the fireTV and eliminate your HTPC?

why would you do this? Just have the firetv pull straight from the NAS and properly configure passthrough.

ok so my system is like this
NAS, HTPC, Fire TV on hdmi switch (so i can watch in different rooms)
living room (where I watch most of my movies) is connected to hdmi switch with hdmi extender over cat6 to tv. Sound from tv goes to sound bar.
most of my movies are converted to mkv with dts ( over 300+) so I dont want to convert them
Sorry if this was mentioned already....
Hello,
Something that has worked for me when i used ATV2 for my streaming needs...
i hated the answer "recode your files" - i simply watch too much TV and Movies to do that, so i installed PS3 Media Server on the PC that was sharing my files. XBMC picks up the PS3MS share easily and then a big portion (or all?) of any decoding needed can be done on the PC side. PS3MS can pretty much decode anything you throw at it, and you will NEVER need to re/decode EVER.
Hope this is useful - just trying to help!

Gotcha. So the audio goes through the TV and it's down-converting to 2-channel stereo. This could be a setting or a limitation of the TV. My Samsung, for example, can accept DD5.1, but can only output 2- ch stereo.
I will certianly need to check out Playstation Media. Quick question though, would it pick up a DVD in the disc drive? I have XBMC mapped already to my disc drive, but if it would read the drive and have XBMC read it as a Movie on the Fire TV side, that would be great!!!
So basically short answer to my question is "no" ??
XMBC cannot be set as player only on fire tv. Once sideloaded it will work as player/server (same as my xbmc on HTPC)

Hi, I already have a dlna server setup via my NAS. I want to be able to play those video on my Nexus player, the only way that I know to do that now is to use an app like Allcast on my android phone to cast the video to my nexus player. I would like to remove the phone from the picture and stream the video directly on my nexus player. Thanks.

There are so many apps to play DLNA...
Most file explorers. Eg - es file explorer
Many DLNA apps on play store work
I use MediaHouse which really works well.

Nexus Player Cast useless

Hi!
I was going the get me a second Chromecast, but went for the Nexus Player instead.
This was a huge mistake. The cast function is useless. It does not work the same way as the Chromecast.
I have tested HBO Nordic, the picture gets all distorted. Then I tested CanalDigital Go (Norwegian tv distributor), here the audio is out of sync with picture.
Both these apps works great on a Chromecast. The Nexus player is up to date, have tried factory reset
Anyone with similar problems?
Being from Canada i can't test those apps unfortunately. However in my experience, casting to my Nexus Player is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than to my Chromecast. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of people have the same issue as you
I, too, can't speak about the apps OP mentioned. But like koperniczx3, I also find the Nexus Player to work MUCH better than Chromecast.
Exakt same problem with HBO Nordic on Nexus player. Distorted picture every few seconds. I so wish I had bought a second chromecast instead
Works perfekt on chromecast.
Just sideload those apps to the nexus and you wont have to cast.....or load lollirock on it and just install from the playstore

Same issue here, new start-up called "iflix" just available where I live. Able to cast to chromecast, but not available on Nexus Player. Maybe the DRM is why it won't work. Only hope is either dev fix the casting (to nexus player) , or release tv version.
I haven't noticed any major problems with casting to the Nexus Player. The only issue I can think of is that the Chromecast plugin for ES File Explorer doesn't seem to work with the Nexus Player but I've already emailed the app developer about it. Google occasionally releases software updates through Google Play to improve the casting feature on Android TV devices. If you use the Hulu app to cast from your phone or tablet to a Nexus Player with AdAway installed, this actually works surprisingly well because it even skips the video ads.

I am having same issue. Casting work well with google products but other apps it works well with chromecast but when I cast from same app to nexus player it doesnt work at all. Example of apps (CTV GO, Lynda, Plualsight) they all work well with chromecast but not with nexus player cast.

The only time I have noticed casting to work better on a Chromecast is with casting a screen. The apps I use either work the same, or better on the Nexus Player. But sideloading and having the app on the Nexus Player is so much better than casting anyways. But some people are more technically advanced than others. You have to control these apps with a mouse but to get around that, just use Droidmote. This Nexus Player has been the staple in our living room and we love it.
I have had both a chromecast and nexus player. (currently posting this on my nexus player with a logitech k400 plus) I have found that casting works way better for me on my Nexus Player. On my chromecast it would drop off constantly, and video quality would go down so I would stop and restart the app/video to get it good again. I have had zero problems casting to my Nexus Player. I cast from my Nexus 6. Although I don't cast nearly as much as I use to being HBO GO is now fully supported and available on the App Store. That was the main thing I casted. I still cast Fox Now, Watch ABC, NBC, CBS and FX Now. I never have any issues. It sounds like a problem more so related to the apps you are casting.

Nvidia Shield TV Remote missing MENU button! Can't use this for Kodi :(

I just discovered that the Nvidia Shield TV's remote control doesn't have the MENU button. I use the MENU button a lot in Kodi to access the context menu. I'm probably going to return it now.
This remote has so few buttons, there's not even a HOME button or a BACK button!
The hardware is great but the remote ruins the experience.
Kodi 16 supports long press on select button for context menu support. Wait for stable 16.1 and upgrade and you'll then be able to use the remote for context menu duties
Remote is garbage, agreed. Pressing X on the gamepad in Kodi will show the context menu
I agree. The Nvidia remote is really not a good thing for kodi. You can download this though it works great.

Would we be able to buy an Amazon Fire TV remote and use it with this for Kodi? I got this on Black Friday mainly because of the remote deal, this remote is such a disappointment.

That's cool but still a long time to wait. I still can't believe Nvidia says that their remote is worth $50.

fire tv remote works fine yes. Syncs up through Bluetooth perfectly. One additional button added from Nvidia wouldn't have been a crime. I love everything about the remote apart from the lack of menu button.

Kodi 16 beta 2 Jarvis works great on shield and tweaks and fixes related towards shield tv have been implemented. I actually like the remote but I got it for free which helps
with the headphone port on the remote it actually doubles as a chromecast Audio. I find that a very nice feature and use it a lot.
I think the remote is worth the $. First; it's Bluetooth, not IR. Second. It's got a headphone jack which supports headsets (headphones with mic). This makes it worth it imo I can be watching TV and enjoying sound while someone else sleeps in the room. Priceless for me. Third: it's got the mic for voice search.
I've been able to map buttons on the remote with key mapper.
I would check out Droid Mote if the remote isn't for you. Sounds like you've got an android phone or two lying around you could get along with a lot better. Yes it does require the paid server app. But the benefits of Droid mote are worth the cost.

No, you just cast to the chromecast, which means you tell chromecast via your phone where to stream media from. The chromecast, once you started the audio stream, doesn't need your phone. You can turn it off, music will still play.
SATV has built in Chromecast, the remote will output any audio via the headphone jack. So, plug it in to your stereo, cast to your SATV and your stereo will play the stream.

That's a friggin great idea! Where did you find the XML tag names for all the remote's buttons? Is there a tag or key ID for the voice button? I'm thinking of making that the context menu while fullscreen video is playing.
where you put this xml file
I have always used the Yatse smartphone app for kodi, even before the shield. Just use that, its worlds better anyways.
