[Q] 'H' icon in notification bar - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought an unlocked Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900V) and I'm facing a problem. I have an 'H' icon beside the signal bars in the notification bar and there is a message in the notification menu saying, "SIM card from an unknown source". Can anyone help please? Sorry if this has been brought up before, i did my best to google my query first. Thank you.

Hey! Thank you for replying promptly. I got rid of the unknown SIM card error. I knew of that fix, i just thought there would be some other workaround to that. Any idea about the greyed out 'H' icon in notification bar?

VS980 on GSM Question

I bought a VS980 (The Verizon G2) because they come unlocked and it was cheapest. I use Net10. The sim card works within the phone, however it constantly shows that i am roaming, i dont get hspa+ (4g) anymore. Also it shows the sim card icon with a question mark on it. Could i possibly flash AT&T firmware onto it to fix that? I mean, what could i do? What specific things would i need to change?
Thanks a lot!

i also face same problem always showing roming icon when i use any gsm sim card on it...
I have the VS980 and it works great on T-Mobile, I get GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HSPA+, and LTE. I never tried it with AT&T or another GSM provider though.
When you use the stock ROM it will have issues like you listed, however if you install another ROM it should work fine. I believe I was running Malladus 4.2.2 at the time which removed the ? icon, and I didn't have to enter any APN info. I also ran it when on a 4.4 AOSP ROM.
so do i have to downgrade the bootloader or what? I'm actually trying to get a verizon vs980 on cricket (aio wireless/at&t network) and can only get H speeds. not bad and i can stream HQ youtube videos without buffering but would like faster. any input?
I met this problem, too. Is there any solution so that I can get my 4G back?
Please help.

Has anyone SIM unlocked the S5 to other Providers?

I ran the region unlock app yesterday just for the hell of it on my Developer edition and inserted my friends AT&T Sim card and the calls went thru!. There was an H signal but it wasn't bright like the rest of the icons on the status bar and had no internet only calls, so I wonder if the AWS Unlock/hack will make the 3g/4g work? Or if anyone knows how please share.

I got 4G LTE speed on my Verizon note 3 and S5 with tmobile or AT&T sim, you just need to change APN accordingly.

All Verizon 4G phones are sim unlocked.
As urcboss said, you just need to change the APN to the specific carrier settings.
I am able to successfully use my VZ Galaxy Note 3 and my wife uses her VZ Galaxy S5, both on T-mobile Edge, HSPA, HSPA+, and LTE (band 4) frequencies.
Here's the guide I followed for both (with correct APN settings screenshots to accommodate for MMS on page 4 or 5 i believe):

Have you attempted to search for your providers APN information and manually add it?

What if I do that and it goes back to being lock to my Verizon sim? How would I know if it's really unlocked? Cause I'm using the data now. I can make calls, msgs, nd get on the Internet thanx to the apn settings I entered, but how do I change it to 4g icon instead of the H+? Nd getting rid if the unknown sim... or does none of this matters?

You can always try to search for the 4G apn settings (if such exists) for Verizon, and or go to your mobile network settings and set 4G as preferred network type.

Mate ,
Once is unlock is always unlock no matter what sim you put in
You did not mention you could make call and send messages , to get 4G review your settings/connections /more networks /mobile networks and make sure you have the right setting there .
if you have dta and voice you should not have the "unknown sim " error ......try with a different sim to see if is sim related.

Verizon Note 4 on t-mobile network

I've been using it on tmo since yesterday. Solid signal, very stable so far. I ran speedtest this morning and got 56 up\26 down. The speed is crazy fast.
To get the Note 4 working on Verizon:
1. Change the APN setting.
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090
2. Change the network mode to Global in Mobile networks (same place where you set the APN)
3. Change the voice mail number.
-Open the Phone app, click on the 3 dot Menu button, go to Settings, select Call, select Voice Mail Setting, and change the number from *86 to 123.
-I use Google Voice, so I just switch mine to Google Voice.
4. If touch tone DTMF is not working for you, try to turn of noise reduction or change the DTMF from Short to Long.
5. To get rid of the annoying SIM message in the notification. Tap, hold the message and select App Info then force close it. Do this every time you reboot the phone.
Hi, noob question here, I am also using tmo network on a verizon note 4 but I can't seem to go online... I was told to changed the Network mode to GSM but still nothing. it also says the Signal strength is -67 dBm 23 asu. Any help would be great thanks!

You need to add T-Mobiles APN google it!
Good to know. I'll be taking this bad boy to Asia next month. Sounds like it'd be a no problem sticking a new sim card as long as I get the APN down ?

how to remove Verizon bloatware
I'm using the Verizon note 4 with the T Mobile SIM card and it works well, it connects to 4G LTE, but I cannot use mobile hotspot because its integrated with Verizon's services. All the APN settings are fine but it says mobile number not found.
Does anyone know how to remove all of the Verizon bloatware? Things such as the Playstore and settings even have Verizon bloat. Data Usage tool also does not work either.
Also to note, whenever i reboot the phone a permanent notification apoears saying something like, "Sim card is not Verizon," which can only be removed if you force close the activation agent. Its annoying that Verizon left its mark throughout parts of the phone.
Is it possible to make this a Regular galaxy note 4?
(Another weird thing is that the settings menu cannot be switched to carousel mode which the T-Mobile version can do.)
hi i tried my t-mobile sim in my verizon note 4 but lte is not working it only works on hspa

I think T-Mobile sims for lte should use
fast.t-mobile.com
also make sure you do have LTE in your area.
I did it on Galaxy S5 for someone and it was fine.

To get rid of that notification, press and hold it until the App Info window appears. Hit that window then you'll go to the Activation Agent app settings. Push "Force Close" and it will disappear.
Nice and easy but the only problem is that you have to do this every time you restart your phone.

Does your phone have a clean esn from verizon or is it considered a "bad esn" (lost phone)? Just curious if they work outside verizon with bad esn.

It depends if your market uses LTE band 4. Probably though.
Also, it looks like (once root is achieved) you'll be able to add more LTE bands.
Do we lose frequencies when we use a verizon phone on tmobile? Doesn't seem to have band 12.

Shouldn't be an issue since AT&T and T-Mobile primarily use band 4. The other bands are for additional bandwidth if there is congestion and T-Mobile uses band 12 in limited markets.
