bricked? red flashing led

Just got my nexus 4, and after it was left in cwm for about 10 minutes (while I was making breakfast) it went to a black screen and now just the red led notification led is flashing whenever plugged in, and on my mac in system profiler it shows "composite device", any suggestions?

Don't know if you want to do this, but you can open the phone and disconnect and reconnect the battery connector...

What was your battery level, I know in other devices some times the CPU(s) run at full speed in recovery allowing for quicker flashing this could discharge the battery rapidly. Also a flashing red LED when plugged in normally means the phone is charging but doesn't have enough charge to reliably turn on, leave it plugged in for about 15 minutes and try turning it on again.

Try holding down the VOL + and - keys along with the powerbutton (after turning it off by holding down the power button for an extended time) and see if you can get into fastboot. My friend's Nexus 4 kept bootlooping after he unlocked the bootloader but booted straight to CWM after, not letting it erase userdata first.

I have no problem doing this, the phone seems easy to disassemble, looks alot like a overgrown iPhone 4, 2 screws on the bottom. I just hope its an easy slide, I don;t want to mar it in case I have to exchange it.

I thought this as well, its been plugged in for at least an hour now.
Oh and now I don't even get the red led!

I've got the exact same issue. Plugged it in last night to charge and this morning it wouldn't turn on. Plugged and unplugged it and the red LED starts flashing. After a minute or so I'm getting the battery charge animation on the screen - so the red LED is power related. Now to see if it actually charges up and boots.

Hi nycbjr. I have seen a similar issue posted here, but I can't find the thread at the moment, try searching. If I remember correctly then he got it working by holding power, volume keys and then plugging in the charger.

[Q] n4 is completely unresponsive (dead)

So this is what happened:
the phone discharged fully and i connected it to charge. then i got a flashing red led. seeing this as a bad omen i tried to turn my device on - no luck - it wasn't responding.
i unplugged the charger and plugged it back in and again the same result, then again..... and i got a solid red light. so after a few times of messing about with it , trying out a few sources of power and such i got it charging (the battery logo appeared). The charging lasted for ~30 sec and it went black.
So after that the n4 is completely unresponsive. No flashing leds no backlight on screen, NOTHING.i tried out a few chargers and cables and beside those i used a genuine n4 charger (it's 100% working - i tried to charge another device). i left it there for the whole day to charge thinking that maaaaaby the battery ran to a complete 0 and i just need to give it time, as you probably guessed it, that did nothing.
In fact, i think the phone is not charging at all. The reason i think so is because the wall charger is emitting a faint high-pitch squeal regardless of the fact that the phone is connected (it should be squealing only when it's plugged into socket and the phone is not plugged in it)
so TL DR:
n4 is completely dead, no signs of life. The things that were tried:
a handful of chargers and cables that are 100% working on other devices
trying to boot with a combination of volume buttons pressed
holding the power button for 60 sec. while plugged in
prolonged charging (~7 hours)
verbal threatening to sell the damned thing if it's a serious problem
so that's that. i should get my tools back from a friend on monday. i'll try to take it apart, maby there's a loose connector here or there or something. Any ideas what i could try before that?

thanks for the link, that seems to be worth a shot.... i'll be able to take the phone apart on monday, that's the earliest i will be able to try it. i was wondering if there is anything i can do until then to remedy the situation. I mean i'm really getting a kick out of my old sony erricson k300 but i kinda prefer the nexus and would prefer to fix it asap.

ok i fixed it
i used a 3v source and held the contacts manually for 5 min. that returned it to the red blinking led state and after leaving it to charge for 5 min it returned to the battery icon on screen. thanks for the info again.

Soon after downloading the Facebook and messenger app (not sure if relevant), my N4 died, which isn't unusual, happens maybe once a week. I tried all the usual fixes but this time was different for some reason. I'm running PA 4 Beta 4. There is zero response from the phone while unplugged no matter all the different power button combinations. When plugged in to PC or socket, the red light does appear when I press the buttons after a few seconds, but only while plugged in, no red light while simply "charging". Any help would be appreciated before I send it to get it professionally fixed.

The red light wouldn't be on during charging anyways. Charge the phone from a wall socket instead of the USB port because it'll take a week to charge that way. Let the phone charge for a couple of hours and try again.

No, cannot boot into recovery, phone has been stone cold also the whole time so it doesn't look like its charging (7+ hours), like I said the only indication it is somewhat alive is that the red light does flash while it is plugged in but only while holding the volume down and power buttons. Other than that the phone is completely dead.

With that, I think you need to call customer service and see if they can point you in the right direction.

Any luck? I have the same issue, it won't start and shows a red light when I hold down volume down and the power button. I talked to customer support and they told me to do the typical stuff, said to call LG instead.

No change, will drop it into my local electrical repair shop tomorrow and hope its not that expensive to get fixed, pretty frustrating to have your phone die for no apparent reason

I could be wrong but I would think the issue is a dead battery, I would think replacing the battery would fix it but that's my opinion regarding what happened with mine, it was drained down all the way. Not sure if yours was almost dead but mine was very low and crashed, it tried to start again but I think the boot screen took up too much energy and it sucked whatever else the battery had.

Have you done this? Where are the wires going into exactly? I can't secure it on anything from the battery flex cable.

OK just got a reply from the repair shop, this is what they said:
Task Type : HARDWARE
Notes : between layer of the mainboard the circuit is gone.
new mainboard: 229.-euro
Obviously I'm not going to pay for this, will try the fix in the thread linked but looks like a lost cause. uEih, best of luck with yours, let me know if you manage to fix it. Thanks to those who posted in this thread.

Nexus 7 won't turn on

My wife's Nexus 7 suddenly won't turn on... It still had juice when she went to charge it, but the next day found it was totally dead.
I've tried different chargers, tried to get to the bootloader, opened it and unplugged the battery, hooked it up via USB to my computer, etc and nothing will get this thing to power on.
Any ideas?

I mean, how long did you leave it on AC power? I know when I drain mine since coming to KitKat, it takes as long as a half an hour to respond again.

Sorry, it spent more than a day on the charger. Still nothing, cannot get it to respond at all.

If you haven't already, try holding the power button for a while until *hopefully* the Google splash appears.
A good way to tell if the device is accepting a current is by using a charger that can verify this somehow, like with an embedded LED. One like this: http://www.verizonwireless.com/accessories/rapid-wall-charger-with-6-ft-cable-for-micro-usb/
I used this for my HTC Rezound when it still worked to make sure it was taking a charge because it would report it was charging in the OS but the charger module itself reported otherwise (the red Verizon ring didn't illuminate unless the charger was positioned a certain way in the device thus this was the only way I could supply it a charge and not hope it wasn't dead in the morning). When my Nexus 7 is drained, it draws enough voltage to get the charger to illuminate so maybe try one of these to really make sure it's still responding.
For the meanwhile, if you do decide to buy one, what was the last thing you/your wife had done? Was there root access?

Interesting about the charger -- don't think I have one that does that. Maybe I'll see if my VZW store has one, not sure yet.
She had just used her tablet as normal, and plugged it in like she does every other day or so -- the next morning grabbed it and went to work only to find out that it was dead. IE: not turning on.
- No root access (totally stock)
- I've tried holding the power button for up to 2 mins. - nothing
- Even tried holding the down volume and power for up to 2 mins. together - nothing
- Removed the back and unplugged the battery (plug was really tight) and left it undone for 5 mins and reconnected - nothing
- When plugging in to a USB on the computer, the computer dings like I connected something but - nothing
Perhaps I'll take it apart again and see if I can get a voltage reading on the battery with my multimeter... didn't do that before, but would be good to know if it is charged and not turning on or what.

Remove the back cover, locate the plug to the battery, disconnect plug by sliding from right to left, then replug. Should be fine after that.

Thanks but I already did that. Nothing changed. If I don't get it going soon I'll be forced to buy something else as she is getting impatient.

I bought a refurbish one and it was working great for 2 days and yesterday when I tried to open it, it won't turn on anymore and I was able to browse on it 5 min before.
I tried everything but I cannot find any solution...
When I plug into a wall I cannot see the charging icon and when I plug it into my computer it will do the noise that a device is plug but nothing happen... I wonder if its the battery that is crap

I own 3 of these N7 tablets and this has been the number one issue. Sent one for repair when it was under warranty. The supplied Nexus wall charger burn out quick, and aftermarket cables last only 3 months. I've had better results using the Samsung wall charger and cable.

OP, it sounds like your wife's N7 is in APX mode. Connect it to your PC via a USB cable, and open Control Panel's devices and printers panel. If it sees an APX device, and you didn't make NVFlash blobs, your only recourse is a motherboard replacement.

I just got my new N7 32gb GSM 2012 in the mail today. Won't turn on at all. I'm not going to bother. Going to return it. Quite disappointed, as I didnt realized this issue (apparently with the battery) was so common. Was looking forward to flashing cyanogenmod. Poop. Might just get a samsung tab now, which I think is quite overpriced for its specs.

If you're seriously looking for something other than an N7 then I'd suggest you look at the LG G-Pad.
I bought one for my Dad at Christmas and was amazed by how good the screen is, and the tablet generally, for the price. The LG skin is minimal and can be changed obviously with another launcher, and the battery life is better than my N7.

When I try to turn on my N4, I hold power button, and after about 10 seconds Red light blinks (just once, if it's connected to USB that 1 blink last for 3 seconds, if connected to wall, it's just quick 1 blink. If it not connected anywhere there is no action at all, it just stays dead, no blinks, nothing). Same if I try to go in bootloader by holding volume down+power.
This happened after I successfully installed CM12, with no errors. Then I rebooted my phone, and it just stayed black as it is now. Battery was around 25~30% that time, and phone was connected to USB.
Did I bricked my phone totally? I am now trying to charge it up already for 1 hour... but it nothing changes.
I have searched here for similar problems, but couldn't find solution...
Edit: Charging already for 10h+ , still same..
Edit2: I removed battery, reconnected after a while, still same problem.
So I tested it with multimeter, it says 2.6V, but fully charged must be 3.8V. Could this be a problem? I was charging it for whole night.

easy fix
Hold down the power button and the volume down button at the same time until phone reboots. If you see the little android no need to worry just let go and wait for your device to reboot on its own. This is not a factory reset it's just like restarting your device. :good:

I had the same problem a year ago, I tried to remove the battery, charging all night, and other solutions that I found online and no one worked.
Finally I found here in XDA a user with the same problem and his solution was charger the phone with a wireless charger, a friend of mine has one and I put the phone to charge and after a few minutes the screen goes on and the phone was charged, then I press power button and the nexus run again.
Hope this works.

I don't know anyone with wireless charger. I already ordered a new battery, and then I probably will get wireless charger also. Ty.
But this problem is very weird if you think so.. I think it happened because of many aspects together:
1) Battery was already below 30%
2) I pretty regularly charge phone with USB (won't do it again)
3) It was connected to PC USB in same time.
4) I installed CM12 ROM in same time
So main reason I think is USB, that I restarted phone while it was on pretty low battery and with USB connected.. phone restarted and got invalid voltages and couldn't even boot up or charge phone. I also found an article which says, minimum voltage, when phone battery has 0%, it's 3.0V, so I was below that.. it just screwed everything and battery died. Well, I am not sure for 100% that it's battery fault, but I hope so, I really love my N4 and still wanna use it for long time, I hope it's not dead phone, just a dead battery. Lets see! I will update this thread , when I get my new battery (less than month probably).

I was playing when it happened to me. The phone was very very hot and the battery was around 70%. When I put in the wireless charged and I can reboot the phone the battery was at 65%, so it had charge but the phone won't boot.
I charge my phone almost every day, sometimes with AC, others with USB (plugging to PC) or wireless that depends of my needs

Btw. Do you know if battery charges with wireless charger, if it's removed from the phone?

Don't think it does, since the receiving coils for wireless charging are located just behind the glass back.

Major Issue Google
This "Nexus SOD" issue is showing up on many sites across the Internet. I have multiple "Nexus" devices including 2 Nexus 4, 1 Nexus 5, 2 "Nexus 7 2013". It suddenly started out of the blue with one of my Nexus 4 phones. Symptoms included rapid battery discharge. I am using Lollipop 5.1 on all devices. There are many claims as to the cause, Hardware Motherboard, Power Button etc. Others claim it is "Software Related" or App Related. The problem effects Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 phones. I have ordered a new motherboard for my nexus 4 device and see if that makes a difference.
This problem should warrant a "Major Android Lollipop Crisis Team" by Google to investigate the cause and let us know what it is and what Google is doing to solve the problem before moving to announce "Android M". This issue needs to brought up and actively pursued at the upcoming "Google I/O Conference" by the strong Android Developers Groups to press for "Formal Action"

I had this problem a long time ago and my fix worked for me after doing a little research it seems like this is a case called battery total discharge. The fix was simply to charge your phone using the wall adapter that came with your phone (I still use my old apple cube wall thing) and to wait for the red light to appear then wait about ten minutes before trying to reboot.

I just got new battery . But it looks the same.. phone doesn't boot up.. same red light blinks once.. so.. its my phone is dead? I can't believe that...

I have checked all kind of videos there. Also that one. Most of these cases are related to battery, but it seems in my case it isn't. I just searched for QHSUSB_DLOAD unrecognized device, all posts says it means phone is bricked... But cmon, how? I installed CM12, successfully, without any errors, then just restarted phone, and its dead...

Did u try booting the phone without battery by connecting to wall charger and what about flashing stock ROM via PC
Also check that the power button works
This case should be solved

Just tried booting without battery, and connecting to wall. Same - red light blinks once, after I hold Power button or Power+Volume down for about 15 seconds. If I keep buttons pressed, it just repeats every ~15 seconds.
Power buttons works fine.
After I checked that Device manager thing in google.. it looks very bad.. phone is dead.. probably need to change motherboard. I am just shocked, how this could happen... I didn't receive any errors during CM12 installation. Phone just instantly died after restart.
