First off I've tried searching for a similar topic and couldn't find anything.
So here's my issue. I updated my SGS which I bought from a local O2 store here. Checked that is was indeed unlocked and went ahead to follow the instructions that can be seen here in the forums.
After installation, the language was set to an Eastern European locale, which conveniently was easy to change back to English.
I could not connect to any network, so did all the app installations via WiFi. It wasn't until early this morning when going to work that I noticed that I didn't have any DATA going through.
Checking on the settings, I now have the option to connect to CDMA networks, instead of the option to disable 3G (Only connect to 2G networks).
What do I do to get that option back?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
You need to manually install your phone network details or AP (Access Point) details.
Firstly check you have any details entered.
Settings > Wireles and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
If you don't have any details in here then you need to find the information and put them manually in.
Other then this you can check your Network Mode the next entry below Access Point Names and select the mode you wish.
Mine is GSM/WCDMA auto.
Wish you luck with it.
That's the thing, there are APN's on there and all. It's just that the setting for 3G had now changed to CDMA. Is there a way to just flash the specific CSC and not affect the PDA & PHONE?

PDA must always be flashed. THe other two you can add if required.
WCDMA is the same thing just make the selection you want. No need to flash a different CSC. I'm using JM1 at present and it's WCDMA as it's from Europe but it doesn't effect the phones capability. It's just a name.
Thanks for the reply. So what you're saying is, even if it is saying WCDMA, it WILL connect to HSDPA? Flashing my phone now back to JM5. All other FW's I've tried just show WCDMA instead of 3G.
Eventually settled for JFF and 2G option is back. Now I have the problem of the APN's working. Off to weed through these forums again.
Different question, same problem unresolved. So my original problem is that I seem to have lost all data connectivity (apart from WiFi) after the very first FLASH. OH well. Thanks for your assistance Ancient_One.
WCDMA is not CDMA. It might be confusing a bit, but it's actually two different things. WCDMA is basically just another name for 3G.
(Well, it's a bit more complicated than that, but for the sake of simplicity, let's just leave it at that.)
Yes, WCDMA is 3G. It's not CDMA as used by Verizon and Sprint in the US (they just share some of the radio-level technology).
Thanks for clarifying the bits regarding WCDMA. My how things have changed. Anyway, I'm going back to JM5 and am hoping to get internet up and running. It is so annoying to not have everything working as they should, even after the APN's been added and all.
Much appreciated guys.
I have an unlocked Defy from T-Mobile USA that I'm using with my AT&T service, but I'm only getting EDGE wherever I go, no UMTS at all, and I've even heard of people getting it to run on HSPA bands. I know already that HSPA is available everywhere from my home to my workplace, thanks to my Atrix 4G. I've rooted the Defy and it's running Cyanogenmod 7 latest. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can find nothing on this forum or on Google to remedy the issue.
You should try to change the freq via baseband switcher. And restart.
Maybe you got the "2g only" checked in networks settings..uncheck that.
Settings >Wireless & networks > Mobile networks
You can also put automatic(2G and 3G) mode in GSM/UMTS network preferences.
Thanks for the reply Viper. I just noticed the baseband is set to some central Europe nonsense. Should I change it to one of the T-Mobile USA band settings? There's nothing there for AT&T.
Edit: I changed the baseband to US T-Mobile 3.Something, whichever was latest. 2G only was not checked. I'm still getting 2G only. Could it be my APN settings? Could I copy the APNs from my Atrix?
I'm having a problem with my AT&T connection as well, but I've been using my phone unlocked on the network since March with no problem. I'm new to modding, but OCD about streamlining my electronics. My friend suggested rooting my device and flashing a new ROM. I decided on stock Nordic Froyo, and it makes me so happy not to see all the T-mobile crap in my apps tray.
BUT the collateral damage is not so hot. I have no 3g or even 2g connection anymore. I tried the fix in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944258 and was able to get a signal with 4 bars instead of the previous state of emergency calls only, but no letters like E or 3g and no ability to use the internet/transfer data. I also installed the broadband switcher in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 and tried all of the T-mobile US bands. No luck. I did rest the APN to default. No change. I've been using wifi, but will have to go back to work soon. Not having access to the smart part of my smartphone will feel sort of like having an arm cut off.
I'm not sure what to do next. I could try flashing another ROM, but from what I've read in the forums, that's no guarantee.
If anyone has any suggestions to help a noob, I'd be forever grateful.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the link, halah. Do I apply this as an update.zip from recovery? Or install?
Never mind, it won't work for me, for whatever reason.
Hi
I have rooted RAZR M with the bootloader unlocked currently running Carbon ROM. I just moved to New Zealand and I thought I would be able to use this phone on Vodafone's GSM network. So, I got a prepaid plan and popped the SIM card in. I switched the network to GSM only (I've also tried GSM/WCDMA and maybe another option).
Vodafone NZ shows up in the status bar toggle with zero bars. I haven't tried calling anyone besides Vodafone's 777 number so I'm not sure if that actually works. I can't seem to get data or send texts (except receiving texts from vodafone). So how do I get data to work? I've seen online that people select GSM/UMTS for network mode. That isn't an option though. Should I install another ROM so I can select UMTS? Do I need to use Radiocomm? Thanks in advance!
OK...
First, do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2166542
It may not be required, but it's not a bad idea and won't hurt anything. Most likely, that's the cause of the lack of signal. That won't get you all the way there though.
Next, you need to enable GSM options (commonly called a "gsm fix" ) so you can set the APNs required for MMS and data. There's discussion on that on the Carbon thread, look back a few pages.
If neither of those works, it's possible you happen to live in a location outside the VZW RAZR M's band. If that's the case, you are unfortunately SOL

I didn't do the radiocomm thing but I flashed the gsm fix. now I have 5 bars and I can send texts but still no data. I was under the impression that radiocomm was only necessary to use US GSM carriers.
update:
did a fresh install of CM 10.1 RC2 and the GSM fix and now I have data!

Sweet! Good to know it worked!
FWIW, it's probably a better idea to build your own GSM fix from the RC2 build.prop... The flashable one is using a very old build.prop that may cause issues - in fact that's probably why carbon didn't work. I know there's a post in the CM10.1 thread about it...
You don't need to, but if you start getting odd bugs, that might be the cause...
Speaking of which, I probably should make a tutorial on that...
And yes, radiocomm is usually required for US only, but some countries use the same GSM bands (I think... Not exactly a gsm expert so I may be completely wrong here...) and they need it to get data. Since you have it though, looks like you're good to go!

Hello,
I recently purchased a Samsung Note 3 SM-900V. As a previous Note 1 user I wanted to upgrade my device as I really enjoyed my Note 1.
I use a carrier called Simple Mobile, they are a sub carrier to T-Mobile. Meaning of course, that they use the T-Mobile network.
The problem is this: Simple Mobile (T-Mobile) prefers to use 3g/4g/LTE connections for their data and texting services. Meanwhile, Verizon uses H+ connections primarily, or as I understand it. This difference in signal, from what I can understand through a few days worth of research and combing forums, is the leading reason why my N900V wont upload/download pics, poor signal, etc. etc. DO bear in mind that Verizon software on this device forces the use of the H+ network though it does use 3G as well. Just never 4G or better.
From what I understand it is this H+ preference that the phone has me locked into that is causing my problems. It would seem that this device is capable of using 4G LTE and from my research, being able to use Band 4 would fix most all of my issues.
The major problems itemized are as follows:
Error message "This SIM is from an unknown source"
Unable to send/receive MMS texts
Reduced signal strength when compared to using my same SIM in my Note 1 side by side in pinpoint locations
Complete loss of signal in areas where SIM/Note 1 device had very good signal
As such, from what I can understand, if this device could access Band 4 then it would communicate with the Simple Mobile/T-Mobile network and erase the Sim card error message, send MMS and receive, and finally.... match the coverage I was accustomed to before I used this SIM on this device.
I've have considered a few solutions to include rooting the note 3 so I can enable 4G LTE, installing a factory version of KK 4.4.2 without the Verizon Brand and its bloatware forcing me to use H+ and as a final resort, selling the device (which I do not want to do). Though none of these options seem possible considering I'm using a N900V. At least not without bricking it.
Each time I think I've found a solution, there's a compatibility issue with my device, the software/firmware version, the chipset, etc, etc.
I've attached a screenshot that details some of the specs of this particular phone.
Any options or help would be appreciated.
Welcome Wallace
ok, thanks
so basically, you bought a verizon phone and using a sim card of another network.
Have you tried ringing verizon and asking them about this problem.
I have installed roms on uk version samsung S and S2.
What we now need to know is if American version supports Band 4 at all....I hope someone answers your questions here...
Admins/Moderators here should be able to give us a good answer.
Did you try...

I've got the same phone and I was able to 4G LTE to run by changing the Network Mode setting to Global.

It may not switch immediately but will eventually switch.

It is on global now and still only fluctuates between 3G and H+. Never 4G or LTE.
I've read about this issue from others but the fix was to root and then switch the phone to use band 4 by default.

Did you try "3g/4g/lte" instead of global? Band 4 is the latest and greatest and not available everywhere yet. The normal band you should see is band 13 (at least for me). There is a good thread in the "General" section on "Service Modes" you should look at.

That may be true. I'm not sure and I cant validate it. However, it would seem from what I am reading that I need to switch it to B4.
I haven't rooted it and still looking for a way to root a KK 4.4.2 N900V. Once I have access to that menu I can test whether these methods from other threads and sites are accurate.
I'm not saying you are wrong by the way but under the current settings my phone doesn't talk to my network and incurs an entire host of other problems.

I have switched from global to GSM under network settings. Going to see how that works. I get poor service with global setting but I do get service. Under CDMA I get zero signal. Even though I had 3 bars a second ago under global.
I'll let it sit on GSM for a few hours and see how that works.

I read the entire article a few times just to see what it had to say about my problem. Unfortunately, it does state that I must be rooted to even proceed with most steps.
Back to square one. I need to root it, however, the threads on here that refer to rooting with the N900V and KK 4.4.2 in mind say that there is not any way to root this device with this operating system.

Hey there,
So i followed the instructions for towel root, both versions, and I dont think the change took.
I installed ES File Explorer to make some changes from the advice of another thread and those changes cant be made because I cant find the file or the directory. Even after enabling options for root and display hidden files.
So, even after installing Towel Root, when I go to access the service menu using any of the codes I get no action whatsoever.
Im still in the same boat as well as far as not finding a proper KK 4.4.2 root file/method for N900V that does not follow itself with threads saying how it doesnt work at all.
Is there another way to root that I'm not considering or havent found yet?
Thanks for listening.
Try this:
-Dial *#27663368378#
-UE settings & info
-Settings
-Protocol
-Nas
-Network control
-Pref mode set
-Choose GSM_WCDMA_LTE_ONLY
You may need to reboot. This worked for me on NC2 with a MetroPCS sim. If it fails then double check your APN. You may also try to factory reset the phone with your Sim inside. When you do a clean install you get more options under Network Mode in settings.
I Have a brand new SIM from WIND mobile in Ontario that came in another phone. I have this Nexus 4 kicking around so I popped in the WIND sim, but it does not connect. When I go to search for mobile networks in settings, it finds all the non AWS carriers (including the 'WIND away' network) but does not show Wind 3G (this is what the correct network lists as on my phone supplied by them). I have played around a bit in the *#*#4636#*#* menu, but nothing seems to make it work. Is the AWS band disabled in some Nexus 4s, and is there a way to enable it?
Welcome to XDA
Okay, first of all to avoid duplicate threads please use the search function of XDA to find your answer, or do a little Googling...
Anyways to answer you question, the AWS band of the Nexus 4 is disabled by Google to lower costs. That may sound crazy, but the story goes something like this:
If you didn't already know, The Nexus 4 is based off of the LG Optimus G, and has a lot of the same insides...
The same board was used for the nexus 4 and Optimus G, and on some of the G models they had LTE on band 4 and 17.
The nexus 4 never went through the FCC for LTE so Google disabled it because it wasn't worth the trouble of supporting 1 band.
Now, your answer: Depending on the Android Version, it maybe as simple as tinkering with the Info menu you were in. (4.2.1)
Newer versions were harder to enable LTE
You need to figure out what you need to do depending on the newer version.
You may need something as simple as an older radio
You might need to unlock your phone's boot loader, (which requires a factory reset), or maybe even have to flash a custom recovery (like CWM or TWRP) and custom rom.
It would really help I knew more info about the device likel what Android version,if its rooted, or has an unlocked bootloader, etc.
If you don't know what any of this means DON'T WORRY, there is an entire community of people willing to help
Sorry I should have gone into more detail. I have done the various tricks to try to enable LTE, but is that the same as enabling the AWS network? I was under the impression from the WIND folks that the Nexus4 worked for them stock.
As for the firmware version, I have tried on 4.2, 4.2.2, KitKat (4.4 I think?). I have tried after flashing the stock roms of each of these versions as well as after rooting. I have also tried flashing different radio versions to no success.
I should also mention that under the "4636" menus I have tried to click "select radio band" from the menu, but this just crashes the process and goes back to the first menu.
So does no LTE mean no AWS?
Hmmm...
First of all, NEVER click Select Radio Band, like you said, it crashes both the menu and resets your connection. Bug? Unfinished feature? No one knows.
You are supposed to click on GSM/LTE button instead of WCDMA preferred.
If that sticks then you might be done on (4.2.1)
If on higher version, then get the older .33 or .27 radio or a hybrid radio
AWS is the band the nexus 4 has unofficial support for, so its actually the opposite:
No AWS=No LTE
So try getting 4.2.1 via factory images and try getting that working okay (WCDMA→GSM/LTE)?
If not then tell me
How about 4.2 (JOP40C)? I have that currently but I can go back and get 4.2.1 if necessary.
And just to put the AWS/LTE bit to rest, can I have (on this or any other phone) AWS without LTE, or are they synonymous?
I am playing with it right now without the sim becaue it is busy in the other phone. When I switch to GSM/LTE AUTO, I find AT&T as well as the big three Canadian networks, but still don't see WIND. I did not see the AT&T on WCDMA, but its spotty near the border here anyways.

Sorry for the late reply but,
In 4.2 all you have to do is switch to GSM/LTE and switch to correct APN's in the phone settings
You can AWS on 3G as far as I know but it won't make a difference...
The only reason we are using AWS band for LTE is because its the only one the Nexus 4 can see.
As for the last paragraph what do you mean you cant see WIND? What do you mean by "seeing"?
Can you clarify?

Could you try this small app (should trigger the radio band select menu) to see what options do you have?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network
For the Wind Mobile AWS, you will need the WCDMA option. This is what Wind Mobile use, not LTE.
If you will be able to select the WCDMA option and still no Wind 3G/HSPA, then we will tinker with the APN settings.

By 'seeing' I mean when I go to the network selection / search function in settings. When I click to search for network providers, I do not see WIND3G as an option (or any WIND branded network). On the phone they provided me, when I search for networks I have several options that are labelled as WIND. If I recall correctly, I think I have about 12 choices between various providers, whereas with the Nexus 4 I just show three selections.
@DupleX01, Thanks. I will give that a shot when I get a few minutes to play with this at home. It has been a couple of weeks since I have worked with the Nexus.

It's a slow day at work, so I am back on this. I have tried setting the radio to WCDMA only, but this does not make a difference. The only network I can see with the SIM in is "WIND away", which I believe is Rogers. So I am on roaming. Should I flash a different radio to the phone? Anybody got suggestions on which radio is the best version for use on WIND?
With the SIM in, the APN settings are already correct for WIND, but I am not finding their network.
Also just for kicks I flashed kitkat (stock) again, including the radio that comes with the ZIP. No changes in network availability.. Gonna leave it on this for now unless someone suggests that it might be better to revert to 4.2.1 or another version.

Based on your findings, I would say everything is alright on hardware side (APN is good, radio ok for WCDMA). So, it could be a glitch with Wind micro sim card. Still bonded to the previous phone IMEI what not. Make sure you now the serial of the micro sim, your imei of the new phone and give them (Wind Mobile tech support) a call.
