Hi All,
I've managed to get Lollipop running on Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi. I rooted my Nexus using the Toolkit, and have flashed latest TWRP.
Post Lollipop install I have also cleared the Cache ( as recommended) and the tablet does appear a little better in terms of lag.
But, I've read a lot of posts that this Nexus can be Overclocked. I'm not looking at some insane OC but I'm looking for a decent OC that won't kill battery, etc.
So, a few questions:
1. I've read about ElementalX kernel but just want to confirm that I can flash it through TWRP, without issues.
2. What's a good OC that I can aim for (1.6Ghz/2.0Ghz?)? I'm looking for a decent boost in performance without killing battery.
Looking for some advice before I take the plunge.
Edit: Just realised that I've raised this thread in the wrong Nexus 7 area. Could I please request a MOD to move this to the Nexus 7 2012 area?
Anybody?
1. How else would you flash the kernel?
2. Ask in the thread dedicated to the kernel in question?
Running ElementalX at 1728Mhz without issue on 5.0. As suggested, check the kernel thread for any specific questions about it.

Hey thanks for getting back. I'm assuming that you're using ElementalX on Nexus 2012 and not 2013?
OP, if you need to move the thread, report the thread's first post and request it to be moved. I think it's already been done this time, we're just awaiting a mod to move it.
Moved to correct board (sorry, holidays are always a bit rough on us staff, but we are getting to it all, we promise!!!)

I wanted to get Elite kernel and Paranoid Android rom on my Nexus 7. Is that possible? If so, how could I do that?
First you have to ask yourself why? Do you even know what a ROM and Kernel is? Do you know how to control both? Seeing you are a really new member i would ride the stock train for a while. Maybe learn how to flash a custom recovery and root manually Then you can move on to ROM flashing. Once you get the hang of that move on to choosing a kernel you deem appropriate. Also i wouldnt just flash whatever one else flashes and says is the "best." Thats not always the right way for yourself.
If you have to ask, then you probably shouldn't be treading where there be dragons, to borrow a phrase.
The short and sweet answer to your query is that pairing a 4.1.1 kernel with a 4.1.2 rom is going to result in a boot loop-

There are not 2 sub-forums that talk about nothing but development for the Nexus 7.
There are no how-to guides anywhere.
So no; it is impossible to put a custom rom or kernel on the Nexus 7.

Look in the thread of Elite kernel to see what roms it supports. If it doesn't mention your ROM, [ParanoidAndroid--which btw is a good rom, I use it] you could reply to the thread and ask if it's compatible with the latest paranoidandroid [2.5].
Also worth mentioning the stock kernel is not bad.. especially for android newbies. [I use stock PA kernel--now--but I'm not a n00b though!]
Hello! I created a new xda account with my new gmail account, anyways, I used to have a verizon fascinate and am no stranger to device tampering. My name is Gabriel and am a huge fun of the nexus 7! anyways, so i flashed over Clemsyn1.5extremeUndervoltedFINAL.zip using google nexus 7 tookit and twrp recovery. I received an OTA update getting me to JZO54 a while back and i think this is my issue. After the flash, it went to boot up and was stuck at the x screen the whole 8 hours i was asleep! i would very much like this kernel to work because im tired of choppy framerates! If someone has been in this situtation and has a kernel suggestion and maybe "how to" guidance. Im in the team win recovery project ready to flash kernel but i dont know how to install a zip that isnt already in my internal storage! this is where im stuck. I also would like an overclocked 1.5 cpu/gpu to 600 kernel if possible, thats what the original one i had tried to flash was. Please help me install another kernel and let me know where to get this kernel and links would be appreciated!!! i know this is a great community and hope to hear from someone today or soon
Welcome! Clemsyn's kernel currently doesn't work with Android 4.1.2, only 4.1.1 you need to flash another kernel.

Clemsyn's kernel was updated a few days ago to work with 4.1.2, and I can verify that it works very well. I believe he started a new thread that has a link for the new kernel.

thanks for that info! ill give a search but a link would be appreciated. Its seeming to get hard and harder to find info with the mass of topics around here. Anyways, i still do not know how to do this. can someone please help me? haha my issue is
HOW DO I FLASH A ZIP WITH TEAM WIN RECOVERY WHEN I CANNOT MOUNT MY TABLET TO MY COMPUTER THUS THE ZIP NOT BEING IN THE ROOT OF THE TABLET? IS THERE A WAY TO FLASH ANOTHER KERNEL WHILE I AM STUCK IN EITHER FASTBOOT OR ENDLESS LOOP BOOT WITH THE X IN THE SCREEN? I DONT KNOW HOW TO FLASH A ZIP IN THIS SITUATION. I KNOW HOW TO FLASH IT NORMALLY WHEN I AM IN ANDROID AND CAN PUT THE ZIP INSIDE THE ROOT AND FIND IT IN TEAM WIN AND FLASH BUT NOT WHEN I CANT MOUNT. IS THIS UNDERSTOOD?
im sorry for the caps hahaha i guess im just frustrated. It seems no one understands my main question
In recovery connected to PC type in cmd
Adb push filename.zip /sdcard/
Also apologizing for caps and typing haha doesn't make it any less annoying.

ha, now now no need to be rude here. I was stating that it was frustrating that people seemed to have over looked my main question and was simply emphasizing, my apologies if its a pet peeve of yours. I figure you must be some sort of wiz Metallice, and i appreciate your help! I have a program ive been using to root called nexus 7 toolkit. I looked around and found this ( Flashable kernel from 4.1.2 JZO54K http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12008411/ker...per-jzo54k.zip ) which is the stock kernel it states atleast, and this.. ( ClemsynELITEBatterySaverStock.zip ) which is a battery saving kernel. Im sure you know this, but I was looking to overclock my device to hopefully 1.5 ghz with a 600mhz gpu. It might be asking a bit much, but was hoping someone would be able to walk me through pushing the zip using the nexus 7 toolkit and finding a overclock kernel to flash over. This is what im having problems doing because i am quite new to the nexus 7 and the programs used! only way to be good at something is to learn, please teach me so I can stop asking dumb questions and hopefully help someone in the future!

ha thanks for the help i guess. People on here sure are rude when they help you, im sorry if my bumping was not to your liking. I am new to this forum and this is a ****ty welcome ha. Not everyone is as smart as you when it comes to this stuff. Am i just expected to know terms and methods? i appreciate the help but am disappointed because i thought i was going to meet some nice helpful enthusiasts and have friendly conversations, but instead i just get half assed answers as if im supposed to know what im doing. This isnt ASUS's fault, its mine. But i was hoping to tamper and become a pro with atleast my device. Maybe I dont belong in the android game
Hi,
Got a new nexus 7, unlocked it and rooted it. Love it
Nexus 7: Version 4.2.1
Kernel Version: 3.1.10-g22b4fcd
Paranoid Android Version: 2.99
Build Number: Pa_grouper-userdebug 4.2.1 JOP40D
I found that when i scrolled down through web pages the browser was very glitchy, overall i found the processor to not quiet have that umph for smooth operations i expected.
So i decided to flash it with the "Elite Kernel" . System just got stuck in boot.
Not sure whether this kernel is suitable for the Rom installed!
Any advice in overclocking this device is much appreciated.
Cheers
Don't think elite works with 4.2 yet. Try the latest trinity kernel, it is working well for me.

Hi there, so I've got the Nexus 4 and running Cyanogenmod CM11 M7 and was wondering what would be the best kernel to install on my phone?
Something that'll get me bit of performance and better battery life
Thanks

it depends... always depends
You can try either of these, and then you can check, on your mobile, which is better :
ak's kernel
Hells Doctor with Tardis
Hells Core
In my point of view(and for my mobile setup), the better is Ak, but all of them are great kernels though !
Can't seem to get a download link for 4.4.2 kernel. The one on the official post isn't working. Any luck?
There is no such thing as a best kernel Just head over to the dev sections, try a few and then decide for yourself, as everyone has their own needs/likes/...

Grouper "fast charge"
dskies said:
Guys..please stop immediately to ask to enable fast-charging on grouper.
1: batteries are replaceable and taking the back off a grouper takes me about 30 seconds (they just clip in)
2: It's not just USB. When on a generic AC charger it's _still_ limited to 500mA
which leads to:
3: If left charging without shutting the thing down, @ 500mA in, it takes upwards of 20 hours to get to fully charged and if playing a game such as minon rush (or using GPS + torque in the car) there's a net _discharge_ which eventually results in a flat battery and the device shutting down.
It's not about "fast charging" the battery. It's about supplying enough current to keep the device running for extended periods without flattening the battery.

@franciscofranco Is this kernel not compatible with CM11 on nexus 7 (2012) ? I am using FKU and when i click on r80 install it throws a warning that the kernel may not be compatible as i am using cyanogenMod ROM. can you please let me ?
Loved it on OnePlus one and want to install it on nexus 7...
Caf roms only apply to qualcomm chips, the tegra3 is not one.

@franciscofranco, can we expect f2fs-all support soon, and perhaps color profiles? Thanks!
Hi bro,
Are U working on Nexus 7 Grouper for FK Lollipop 5.0? We're quite desperate knowing this brand new ROM is not actually supporting external/USB DAC. Being promised by Google to natively support the features, we felt rather disappointed. I suspect there is something wrong with the kernel which is rather old.
Should you have time to play with it please do it, a little challenge for you that will bring joys to us around the globe
Thanks
I'm also hoping for usb DAC support to be fixed in lollipop. I'm about to the point where I need to either get tutoring in the finer points of github+ubuntu or buy the N7 2013, which does seem to have DAC support enabled. Anyone willing to teach? The commits for kitkat were present in kangaroo kernel, and timurs kernel. Not sure about changes for lollipop. Hopefully some genius will figure it out in the not too distant future, please?
Android 5.0.2
Hey,
I just installed the franco.kernel updater but it says 'unsupported device'. I have a n7 2012 with android 5.0.2. Can someone help?
Hi all, there is a possibility to download a stable version for CM 10.0?
Why does Franko Kernel for nexus 7 not have the RAW I/o scheduler?
it work , i tried on my nexus 7 5.1.
it work , i tried on my nexus 7 5.1.
r82 also works here with 5.1.1. No issues observed.
Franco r82 kernel vs optipop doesn't work
Just wanted to ask would it be possible for Franco to fix r82 and simply make it work with optipop? For now r82 is advertised as f2fs support and 5.1.1 yet no chance of flashing it on optipop everytime I do that I get system UI doesn't respond or just black screen after booting up.
I'm talking about nexus 2012
Thanks
Frank doesn't allow overclocks, doesn't believe in fast charge like its the toothfairy or something?
I would strongly reccomend another kernel but there are only so many options left. The 2012 tablet is getting old and no one devs for it really anymore.
I used to use only franks kernels but the guy is abrasive and due to leaving out crucial features I can't ever again reccomend his kernels.
Also while it says f2fs support on the box, its not what comes in the tin. As the above user mentioned it bootloops optipop (only ROM left worth running IMO)

What other f2fs kernel for optipop would you recommend? I'm atm on uber and it's good kernel fast and all no freezing at all but comparing to Franco battery last shorter time not really a big deal plus Franco offer more options to manage kernel than uber for example tcp and I/O
Yeah but you still can't use fast charge and he literally belittled people asking for him at add that and overclocking. I can't even remember what I flashed I would have to go and check the tablet - if I flashed anything at all. F2fs (especially f2fs all) kernels for grouper are sparse, and those that exist don't include everything that people think they "should".

I flashed the version modified for cm12.1 on my nexus 7.
Details
Nexus 7 2012 3g+wifi
rooted
running cm12.1
TWRP recovery
So I flashed it and it took over 8 minutes to boot up.When it finaly booted up i got a message saying I have low memory.I checked my memory and I have 12 gigs and some change available. Also battery is draining even when charging! I know this isnt official or anything just thaught Id post my results.Im gonna carry on using my tab with this kernel for a while to see if I can sort it out.
I got tired of the long boots so I used TWRP to load a backup.Tab is back to normal now.Pity this doesnt work. When I was using Paranoid I had Franco kernel and it was great.

This kernel is for the 2012 Nexus 7 (grouper). The 2013 Nexus 7 (flo) is a different device and has it's own dedicated forum, make sure you are going there to kind a compatible kernel for your device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013
Hello running latest purity on f2fs and running m kernel, any suggestion on undervolting the GPU and CPU?
Sent from my nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Hopefully you will enable the sio scheduler as opposed to excluding it entirely. It may not have extreme read or write speeds, as it's more balanced, but it has the lowest latency due to its tiny overhead.
Great kernel nonetheless, managed 5-7 hours of SoT (7 if in continuous use) after undervolting it, and running it at 1.4ghz. Hopefully the LP build will be even better. It runs super smooth at 1.2ghz, can't wait to be able to undervolt it and get even more SoT, because right now, LP gives me the same SoT as PA 4.6 plus M-Kernel.
With kernel tweaker, stock rom 5.0 and a72 it is all ok
I'm running stock rom with all f2fs and a72, it's run smooth but I must press power button more than once to wake up from sleep...
Touch2wake
Running stock 5.0.2 with f2fs data partition only and loving it. Seems to have the issues fixed that made 5.0 uber-laggy. DEFINITELY recommend updating to any debating it (although this is only day one, so I'll respond again after long term testing). Was wondering tho about Touch2wake. Really liked it when I had kit-kat installed and was wondering if it'd be possible to have it brought back, even as a setting that is off by default but can be turned on via some setting. Thanks for the hard work!
does kernel have a problem with overflow of wakelocks "baseband_xmm_power" ?
m-kernel
i got a question on my nexus 7 3g 2012 5.0.2
i have install the latest m kernel but my device only run one core and the cpu cap at 1500
have anyone have this problm and solution
sorry for my poor english
planing s2w /dt2w?
Will there be s2w (sweep2wake) on Lollipop kernel? Asking for it is my only reason not switching to Lollipop. Power drain is not an issue for me, as i can charge device every night no problem. (I have made Tasker scripts shortcuts (following suggestings there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232732) to easy change wake timeout if i need battery).
Bootloop too.
CM12 + a74 + f2fs(data/cache)
Can I flash a73 on 4.4 all2fs rom via TWRP 2.8.5?
Android 5.1
With the recent update to android 5.1 I understand you have a version running on 5.0, but will a new update be coming out?
@Metoo18
Exactly the same here, CM12 with data and cache F2FS. Flashing a74 causes freeze on Google logo.
Hmm, maybe we have to change also system partition to F2FS? I tried to flash Phantom Kernel r2 for LP but I also got bootloop :/
a69 problem
i can't install a68 and a69 on kitkat but i can install correctly a67; maybe zips are corrupt, qhere i can find an a69 zip correct?
It's most likely the battery connector, it has happened to me not once, but TWICE. Two times I have had to open my Nexus 7 to push the connector into the header (there was only some slight contact).
Recently I have filled the gap and thus the battery connector will never unplug itself.

Loadable modules support
Could someone recompile a74 version with loadable modules support (CONFIG_MODULES=y) ?
I tried compiling it by myself but mine zImage is about 700kb smaller and after flashing i got into bootloop.
bootloop
