Alright, I've been having this re-occuring problem for a while now. It does NOT matter what ROM I use, it happens on them all so far (DC, Fresh, Aloysius, Regaw, etc). Let me go over exactly what has been going on.
When I wipe everything and flash a new ROM, the phone does everything as it should. It sleeps like it is supposed to and a fully charged battery will last a very long time.
For some reason there comes a point (a day or two after flashing) where I notice the battery dropping faster, and I notice that my awake time is the same as my up time. I've used "Battery Use" and "Spare Parts" in order to try and locate any possible problem.. nothing is showing. The only thing I know is that when the problem starts: Spare Parts -> Other Usage, shows Running @ 100% and when I click on "Running" It says the phone went (however long) without sleep.
Last night I wiped everything and flashed Aloysius 2.0.2.. I decided to monitor it more closely and chose to NOT install ANY apps, just to see if the problem happens. So the phone was sleeping properly all night. I went to sleep and chose NOT to charge it, because it seemed like the problems started when I charged it or plugged it into PC. So I left it unplugged all night. I woke up and saw that it slept the entire night as it should.
I was messing with the phone, couple of emails, couple of text messages, a few phone calls. The phone was at about 14 hours of uptime and 1 hour awake at this point. When I finished with just some calls and text, I left the phone alone while I went outside to do some things. I came back and checked the uptime.. 18 hours and awake time 5.. Phone refused to sleep again.
I shut the phone down, took the battery out for 60 seconds, put battery back in, put cover on, booted phone back up ("power cycling"). Phone has been on for 5 hours now with an awake time of 5 hours. I can't find anything unusual in battery use nor spare parts again. Now the "Other usage" in "spare parts" shows "Running" as 100% with no sleep time, but I can't figure out what is causing it to be constantly "running". I've even gone as far as to shut off all background data, syncing, locations, and even evdo all together. I have tried so many thing and can't figure out why ONLY a WIPE+flash fixes this temporarily?
Sorry for the extremely long post, but does anyone have any ideas or experience similar problems?
have you tried giving your phone some sleeping pills?

You aren't running a2sd are you? You're sure that your apps aren't just getting reinstalled after a restore because they are actually stored on sd:ext?
I had this problem. The 1.5 release was supposed to fix the problem. It was the dialer running at 100%. Didn't fix it for me. Talked to HTC and they said the problem still exists sometimes. But I had to exchange my phone and the new one has never done that. I think they had some bad phones. If you can't figure it out get your phone replaced.
Sorry I should have mentioned, I forgot. I used to run Apps2SD. I thought that may have been the culprit, so I partitioned my SD card again.
With the latest wipe, I partitioned my SD card with 0 ext and 0 swap, all fat. So no apps2SD now. With the partition was a complete format, so there was NO data on the SD card to restore from. My restore data is on my PC only and I haven't used it.
Edit: Also, I have a minimum of 4 out of 6 bars at all times. 0% TWS

Reboot sometimes fixed it but them it was only temporary. If I remember right it started the always awake again sometime between 12-24 hours after the reboot.

I've been having the same issue with the new 2.1 ROMS as well, for some reason, only a fresh wipe will "temporarliy" solve the issue and after a day or so, 100% awake time, with no apps installed nor A2SD running.
I had the problem. Ended up being Slacker. I have to remember to use the "Exit" button of Slacker or else it never goes to sleep.
What worked for me
Was I would open up Advanced Task Killer, then go to the services tab and hit end all several times. I would keep doing this until the awake time began to drop. Problem was whenever I restarted the phone it would return to the way it was, but after doing this at least half a dozen times it drops the awake time on its own after a restart, so now the awake time hovers at about 6-8% which I think is pretty dern good from 100%.
so
1. Go to ATK (or dw if you dont have)
2. Go To services tab
3.hit "end all"
4. Repeat about 5 times
5. Press the power button to make phone sleep
6. Wake phone back up check awake time in setting
7. Repeat if necessary
also if you have problems dl from the marketplace afterwards, just sign into google talk, and that will set things right.
also your phone will restart all your services every time you end them, so dont be alarmed if you lose your signal and internets for a second or two
i dont know why this worked but it did for me at least
Make sure "GSD.apk" is missing from /system/app. That tends to suck the battery up rather quickly.

Well, After some testing, it appears that my 100% awake BS always starts when I use the dialer and make a call. I got it to go into psycho 100% mode again, even after reboot. I've tried ending all services in the past but I wasn't persistent enough apparently, lol.
At first I tried ending services once, didn't help. Then I went crazy and constantly killed the services over and over for a solid 30-40 second as they opened up again. Eventually I killed ATK and let it sleep, it actually sleeps again.
So... some weird problem with my dialer/phone app (no matter the rom) but at least I found a solution! Thanks amallama.
I think you are simply having a problem with badly programmed apps. It sounds especially suspect that this is happening to you regardless of what rom you are on. Have you installed anything new recently? in the past week I've run into a few apps that have prevented my phone from sleeping (awake time ~89% after 12 hours of uptime).
I deleted fandango and gigbox and awake time and battery life went right back to normal.
When my phone is sitting idle (screen off) it will randomly decide to power itself off. Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas on what could be causing it?

you mean randomly power itself ON, right?
if that is the case, it's normal, it just mean it woke up to connect to the internet, to get updates of news, emails, or whatever it was scheduled to pick up
nope. i mean it randomly turns itself off. this topic is being discussed over on the att captivate galaxy forum section.
interesting, so it's going from stanby mode, to complete OFF... nope never seen that happen to my i9000 model
yep totally powered off... completely sucks... looks like there are a bunch of ppl that have this issue with the captivate on att. $10 says its some lame piece of software that att puts on your phone that's causing the problem.
it's possible, i've read here a few users having crazy power issues (battery draining very fast) with their SGS i9000, but after wiping it out clean, to start anew, then the power problem is gone away.
so yes, a software could cause something weird like that.
Factory reset and so far so good
Hey guys,
I use a Galaxy S here in Hong Kong and I had the same random shut down issue constantly happen when my screen went off...
I tried everything, check temperature of cpu, etc. etc. and nothing worked, it just got worse and worse.
I even changed the battery to use the spare one that came with this. Still problematic.
Used SET CPU to limit the cpu to 400mhz, still problems.
Finally I did a factory reset and so far so good.
I only have the original system installed with the Remember the Milk app installed.
24 hours, no problems.
Installed AppBrain app.
Then I installed 3G WatchDog
12 hours, no problem.
Then I installed Paperdroid
12 hours, so far no problems at all.
If I run into an issue I'll post it here. But I think it definitely was a software issue.
Update - it randomly shut down on me
Alright guys, it shut down on my randomly today in the afternoon......
I dont know if it's the re-charging that screwed it up?
Because after my factory reset, last night was the first time i charged it....
Hmmm
This happened to me too - two days in a row until noon it would shut down two or three times - i uninstalled SetCpu and for now (24 hours) it hasn't happened again. I am not sure if it was the one responsible but it started happening after i installed two programs and i uninstalled them after it started happening. I uninstalled Visual Task Switcher first but on the next day it turned off again, then i unsinstalled SetCpu and it hasn't happened again - maybe some wrong profile settings but i didn't feel like experimenting
I had this issue once too in about 40 days.
I was reading an sms and then i turned into standby and put it in my pocket. Later, maybe 40 minutes i came home and my phone was completely off. I do not remember if i had to take out the battery before to get it on again.
I was wondering why it happened. Maybe it was caused by an app i had opened. Battery still was at 40%.
But since it only occured once in 40 days i doesn´t bother me.
Interesting you mention this as it just happened to me today for the first time. I took it out of my pocket and wtf? The phone was off. Very strange... Using the i9000 on the stock Eclair rom.
Should send back for warranty

software clash?
Well the phone suddenly switched off for me, but this time I turned off APPBRAIN and so far so good.
In fact, I came across an app called NoLED and since it kind of keeps ht phone on, while I have it on my desk, I'm able to be notified of stuff and so far with that, the phone hasnt' shut off.
I'm still experimenting with what works, but try turning off AppBrain and see if you still have the random shut off issue....
i use app brain all the time to keep my apps in sync
not the cause of the problem, that's for sure
my phone can last a whole day even with app brain running
OP, do you have MSN Talk installed on your phone? I have this same problem, seems to happen more when I am running MSN talk in a low signal area.
«try a new sim card. «Could be faulty. «i am on my 3rd phone and all of them had this same problem. «i bought a new sim card 4 days ago, and hasnt happened since. «but then again, this problem usually happens to me once every 3rd-5th day anyways, so i dont know if i am in the clear yet.
Me too, shutdown everyday
Hi guys
After upgrade OS to I9000ZSJG4, Phone random shutdown everyday.
Yep still shuts down
Tried keeping AppBrain off, still shuts down.
Used NoLED so the screen kind of stays on, still shuts off..
So far shut off on me after 40 hrs... this is really stupid.
I am this close to taking it back, but I genuinely think it's a software issue than a hardware issue...sigh
Anyone have any luck figuring this out?
Same problem no solution yet
Hi
I too have the same problem, haven't found any solution yet.
The temperature etc is all good, there is no pattern in shutdown issues.
I have tried factory reset and no new application, it still shut down while using in built browser.
I had the same thing happen to me while skiing in Whistler last weekend. It died twice. I attributed it to the cold. I normally use a 3000mah battery up there, but left it back the house that day. Afterwards while charging in the car and even charging it at home it died prematurely again. It was the eBay aftermarket variety 1500mah knock off. I have since changed back to the Samsung OEM battery. I haven't had an issue with it since. My assumption is that the knock offs in my case cannot handle the heat cycles of charging and then the cold as well as the original. Or they have a limited lifespan, well below OEM specs. I am now only using the 3000mah battery on the weekends to hedge my bet on the quality of manufacture, as it seems to be from the same factory as the 1500.

I just discovered this "feature" this morning as well. -_-
Did u find how to fix this?
I love the feature where the A500's battery doesn't last overnight with the screen off. I didn't think I needed to charge it overnight since the battery was at 95% anyways, so I just set it on the table next to my bed and went to sleep. Woke up this morning and it wouldn't power on. Pretty cool. Wonder what is draining the battery? My DroidX can sit on the same table for almost a week w/o being charged.
I haven't seen it, then again I play music from getting into bed till I wake up so ill try leaving it to sleep and see what happens.

Me too
Same issue here.
i have not tried the trick that I just found that seems to extend the batery life....I put the tablet in "airplane mode" , enable the WiFi and the battery looks like it is draining alot slower. There is power being used for "cell standby" even though is a wifi only tablet
Same problem here with shutdown on charge. Right now it seems fairly consistent-
I'm experiencing them same thing when leaving asleep for extended periods. It first happened while I was charging... now it happened again when I left for dinner and came back. I don't see any setting options for that
Same here. Thought it was a "feature" to keep from using as much battery.

So shutting off notifications seems to stop the problem for me.. except that I don't get notifications At least it boots pretty fast
Lets run some tests, shall we?

I don't think they're shutting off, I think they're crashing/freezing during sleep and not rebooting.
This is speculation by me, and could be different for different people.
Finding the problem:
The test.
Night/Bedtime
This is an overnight/while you sleep test and requires about 2hrs. of your time beforehand. Record your figures if you can and post them for debunking. A couple hours before bed and while you use the tablet during the evening, charge it. After 100% and once it's off the charger please don't use it for anything. We want to simulate the sleep process for about 90m before bed. So if you use the tablet even for a quick web surf, plug it in and getting back to 100%. We're going to allow ~3% for errors anyway but we want to be as close to accurate as possible.
90m before you're ready for bed remove the charger. Don't use the tablet simply set the brightness to auto and take note of your battery level and the time. 60m in take a look at that battery charge again and record the time and charge level. 90m in is the last check and after this whether you go to bed or not please don't wake the tablet. Don't worry if it seems to wake and go back on it's own. That's inconsequential for this test. Just put it somewhere that no one will bother it and resist using it until you wake up. Please
Morning/Wake time
Wake it up.
1. Comes on? Record the charge level and time for posterity so we get an idea of idle drain here on the thread. Everyone gets different values. You'll have to run this test at another time as your shutdown/freeze hasn't been reproduced this time.
2. Doesn't come on? Try a power on press. Comes on? Same as 1. Record the charge level and time and post it here.
3. Doesn't come on? Try a power on press. Doesn't come on? Plug it in and power it on. Now do the same as 2. Record the charge level and time and post it here.
I hypothesize a few different scenarios the summary of which is that I don't think they're shutting down, but this is mostly based on the assumption that the batteries are being charged while the unit is frozen. If they do not charge then my entire test would have to be re-designed. I surmise they freeze and don't restart so they either run out of juice or they're actually frozen when you try to power them on and the long press is rebooting the unit, not powering it on. If I am right then we should see that the batteries are drained as if they have been on all night. This is going to be very imprecise, but my idea is that we'll take the charge % of your bedtime check which is a 60m mark check and just times that by the amt. of hours you were sleeping.
So if you were at 95% when you touched the tablet for the last time, this would mean a drain of ~5% give or take ~1% due to your use while checking, per hour. You take that and multiply it by how many hours you've slept and you'd get X x 5 = 40% which leaves the tablet with ~60% battery when you wake up, again give or take 3% for errors, syncing during the night etc.
If you're seeing a somewhat accurate numerical representation of this formula then it means the tab drained all night.
If you're seeing something way off like the tablet still having way more than it should then it means at some point in the night it really did shut down on its own.
People who are actually saying it shut off probably just reboot the tablet without realizing it as it was on the charger when it froze. Since a power off/reboot press of the power button is roughly the same length as a power on press, it's difficult to differentiate sometimes.
Solving the problem:
I have had this happen twice and it was while I left GPS on.
I haven't had an android cell phone yet that hasn't frozen or reboot itself when I left GPS on for extended periods (aka overnight) so the first time this happened I instantly knew to check and I purposely left it on the second time to reproduce and the second time, the tablet ended up rebooting not freezing. If you're not technical the easiest way to know if your tablet reboot during the night is to leave a web page or IM window on the screen or leave music playing.
You may want to skip the above "finding the problem" tests and attempt this "solving the problem" test. As I mentioned, this is all speculation so I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it and I'm sure we can as a grp.
Once you rule out hardware though, then it's a problem. So if it is indeed NOT the GPS then we're at the mercy of Acer and Google because otherwise there'd be just too many factors to track down.
I'm getting this and i'm loosing a ton of battery somewhere in the process too. I think the above poster is right.
I plug in tabby. go to bed. wake up to pee. see tabby is 100% battery. unplug and go back to bed. wake up to go to work and tabby is powered off completely and battery is anywhere between 85%-90% in a matter of 2-3 hours after being unplugged.
Its likely a rogue app I would get a program like advanced task killer watch it and see what apps are loading in background after you kill all apps.look for apps you installed.not so much the ones Acer put on your tab.
With Ti backup freeze the first one you think should not run give it a day.if that's not the issue keep going down the list.
Had a similar issue it was a app I got from amazon.that was So CALLED FREE.they are not so I uninstalled everything from amazon. No more battery drain.
SOME APPS do not fallow the drained android or social rules
Watching the apps to be sure nothing is running CPU cycles allow the time I loose about 2 to 3 % batter life over night with wifi set to stay awake.
This is ideally from 11 pm until around 10 am the fallowing day.
Yes I sleep in alot giggles

Howdy, first time post here.
For some reason, my Galaxy Core Prime's battery has started draining rapidly even without using it very much. By mid-day it is beeping that it is almost out and wants a recharge.
This is with no apps running that I have launched.
I've tried stopping various apps, have clicked to stop them, etc, uninstalled a few new apps, but the problem continues.
This morning I noticed that the screen kept coming on. I would turn it off, place it down on my nightstand and it would immediately pop back on. Not sure if this is all related or not.
I'm leaving Saturday morning for a week of testing at Mayo Clinic and would like to have the phone with me in the various waiting rooms -- without running the battery done.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas on what caused this to suddenly begin happening over the past week or so?
Thanks,
Chuck

Hey there Chuck!
Try reciting the phone in safe mode first to confirm that the battery drain is because of apps and boy the battery itself, alot of members had battery issues(me included).
If there is no battery drain in safe mode, then it is some app(s) that went rogue.
If there is battery drain then it may be due to battery itself.
Thanks!
Have you tried this yet?

Hi. I know this is an older post but wanted to respond in case someone may have similar issues. If your screen keeps coming on than it could be caused from spyware installed on your phone or from apps that were downloaded. First, I would check device administrator to see if there is anything unusual or that you don't recognize that's checked off. If there is than try a factory reset if you can't remove the application causing the problems. Also there are apps that you can download to fix it repair low or bad cells, and calibrate (reset battery stats). Make sure to charge the phone to 100% before doing repair and calibrate. Restart the phone when finished. Most of the time that will fix the problems but if not than you may need to purchase a new battery which is pretty cheap on eBay.
Hey all,
The first time this happened a few days ago I thought it was a fluke, but the problem has now happened twice. Watching youtube with my battery ~7%, the phone froze, and proceeded to reboot itself. Upon turning back on, it showed 6%,. It quickly drained within 5-10 minutes to 0%, and then shut off. Today I was writing a hangouts message with 5% battery left and same thing happens. Phone froze for a few seconds, then force restarted itself. Booted back up and showed 4% battery, then quickly drained to 0% in minutes and turned off. It is weird as the system is turning itself back on, so it realizes the battery isn't actually dead... but the battery is reaching a point where it is low enough to cause the system to meltdown (maybe the OS is throttling itself?)
The first few days I got the phone I also noticed early shutoff, where the phone would actually run out of battery while still displaying 6-8% still remaining. Also frustratingly, when my phone enters "battery saver mode" at 15%, it very often causes my foreground all to refresh itself in RAM, especially if the app has a "dark mode" battery saver option. Not sure if this last bit is normal or not, but it interrupts whatever I am doing.
Any thoughts? The battery life is OK otherwise with 3-4 hours SOT.
