Changing modem - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I have a stock (but rooted) phone and just want to change the modem only, not a complete reflash. Is there anywhere a collection of modem only packages? I have a SM-G900F but need the australian TEL modem (currently attached to a SM-G900I firmware I can find but can't separate from).
Any help?
Cheers

Take a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52210611

Thanks that's exactly what i'm looking for... never seen disclaimers warning not to stray outside of that model though.... think it is a "just in case" warning, or a very valid one? Didn't think the modem was really hardware specific if the chips are the same.

[Q] Can I flash G900F modem on G900W8 and how?

I've been having a problem on my S5 where the data symbol is stuck on 4G and doesn't show anything else. It might be a baseband/modem error since I'm using a Canadian model in Cyprus. Can I use the modem from the Cyprus G900F firmware and flash it on my G900W8? Also can someone explain how I could do that so that I don't screw it up, if it is possible?
!
RE UP!
Same pb...
To flash a modem you need a .bin file and odin.
Clear your delvik/cache,
put your phone in download mode,
load phone with the .bin file and flash it.
I also am having data issues with all custom ROM's. If it's not one thing it's another. Canadian phones always get left in the dust it seems.

Probably not. You neglected to tell us what your W8 baseband and firmware are, which is rather crucial information. Making it impossible to give you a definitive answer. In most cases Odin will refuse to allow the change.
That isn't really an issue most of the time. There should be a variety of W8 modems for you to choose from if you want to change your modem.

Hey have you figured this out yet... I'm in sort of same situation I have a Sm-g900t but it's running a G900M stock rom, so I need to know how to keep my bootloader & modem and just flash a stock unbranded rom. I know I can flash custom roms through recovery but I want a stock to fall back on

It's not clear what you hope to do. What you wrote is that you wanted to change you ROM to W8 while retaining your TMobile baseband. And your photo shows that you did just that.
But reading between the lines suggests that you were surprised to see that the baseband hadn't changed and are actually seeking the opposite of what you asked. You need to clarify your intent.
The result that you have is the expected situation. The baseband normally won't change, nor does it represent a problem. Your phone should work fine with the W8 ROM paired with the original baseband.
Aside from the fact that there is usually no need to change the baseband, how easy it is to do so depends on the carrier and how they sign their firmware. Odin won't change the baseband if the carrier decided to omit the requisite permission to do so. TMobile modems are invariably compatible with Canadian (W8) carriers, so pragmaticaly the easiest way to update a 900T modem, if you have a rationale for doing so, is to install a TMobile update. Then put the W8 ROM on top of that if you so wish.

Can I flash SM-G900F firmware on an SM-G900I?

Hi,
I have an SM-G900I and was wondering if anyone knows if I can flash SM-G900F firmware on it? Will it change the model number as well?
Also, does anyone know the difference between the 2 models apart from one being an Asian model and one being European?
Nope. You can't flash different models firmware, because it'll brick your device...
Isn't it effectively the same phone though?

Sure you can flash the 900F firmware. It isn't recommended and may "brick" (damage) your phone, making it as useful as a brick. You'd already know this if you had read any of the existing threads on the subject. But you can try anyway if you really want to. If you do, at least make the effort to locate the proper 900F PIT file and flash it concurrently. Your phone still won't work properly afterwards, but using the PIT file will make it less likely that you brick it due to partition corruption.
If you just want to change the displayed model number, you can do that by editing the build.prop file. The main difference between the two models is that they are intended for use in different regions and with different carriers and have different firmware. Therefore each will support different frequency bands.
Unfortunately you didn't tell us why you want to do this. If you are trying to use your phone on a different carrier that uses different frequencies, then trying to flash a 900F firmware won't do that. If you are looking for some 900F specific apps or features, you can probably do that by installing a 900F based custom ROM instead.

Yes flash another firmware will change the model number accordingly

Thanks for your comprehensive response!
The main reason for wanting to flash the SM-G900F firmware is because it seems like a more mainline branch and DBT/BTU will probably get more OTA frequent updates than XSA and i think issues would get resolved quicker in that branch...

Are you absolutely sure of this? Do you know anyone who has done this successfully?

You could do that.. but NFC and sundry other features will fail on you. And any update involving the bootloader won't work for you. And probably ditto for any radio (modem) updates.
Your best bet to do what you want in my opinion is to install a 900F based custom ROM e.g. the Alliance ROM. The active custom ROM developers are proactive in updates and supporting their ROMs and would see the best result by you.
This approach would leave you with your stock 900l bootloader and radio. And 900F ROM, with updates for the ROM maintained by the ROM developer.

When you flash the new firmware, the build.prop is replaced by a new one and the model number will be changed accordingly.
You can also manually change the model number by editing the build.prop file (ro.product.model), as fffft already pointed out.

This firmware don't exist. It's better know what CSC you own and flash the correct firmware for your device. Installing this APP you can know your CSC. Add some screenshot if you need more help :fingers-crossed:
screenshot
Hi I've attached the screenshot but I have no idea what it means. I have already flashed it to AT&T in USA and it is not enabling me to use the Sim card that was previously working in it. I know how to flash it but I just don't know what firmware I should be using and where to find it. Thanks for any help in advance.
Do you have the original box? If so, you should find the full model number on a label. It will say GT-I9500ZKAXXX, where XXX will be three letters. Those three letters will be the CSC of the phone. If not, it is possible to determine the carrier using the phone's IMEI and this site. Once we know the carrier or the CSC of the phone it's possible to get you the right ROM for the phone, assuming of course that you haven't totally screwed yourself by installing the AT&T firmware on it. AT&T and Verizon both encrypt the bootloader of the device, and removing the bootloader by flashing the correct ROM through Odin may not work because of the encryption.

[Q] Sprint i9505 CSC (for CM12.1)

Somewhere in all my flashing/wiping, I seem to have lost my CSC.
When I install Phone INFO and go to the CSC Code tab, it now says BTU (it should say SPR).
Can anyone tell me how to download and restore the Sprint CSC on my phone?
In particular, I am looking for one that is compatible with CM12.1 (I'm not 100% sure that the CSC is related to the ROM, so that might be irrelevant, but just in case).
Also, is there a specific Bootloader/Modem that you recommend for CM12.1?
Many thanks

It's irrelevant when you use aosp. For you second question: Yes it comes with the rom.
