Lets talk roms!!! - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 General

What's everyone using and what's everyone liking? Have any of you tried them all? I use to make a habit of testing every ROM available but my life has taken a turn for the busy and cell phone playtime is minimal. At this point I am only interested in TW ROMS as I know AOSP ROMS all to well..... Unless one of these bad boys integrated S-PEN action into the ROM. I grew tired of installing all those side apps for S-PEN support. So lay it on me people.

Go with Dynamic Kat. It's amazing. I love the rom control option he packs in the rom. Pretty fast too.

These kind of threads rarely end well ......... I will leave it open for now ...... but any trolling, bashing or disrespect will make it close....... ANY ....... fair warning
To answer your question all perform well depends on what you want.......... so that said, you will need to try them all........ there are only 2 I know that havfe custom theming being made for them...... you will need to research this if this is something you want.
Play nice people.......... or no one will get to play at all
Thanks ~~~ oka1

Ive tried firekat, awsome. I was on skyfall for about 2 weeks, awsome and now I'm using dynamic kat, again, awsome. There are plenty of options here and that's great, who doesn't love choice. I also am not a big fan of aosp, but i tried it a few times on the note 3. Anyway, go to all the threads and read the description of each to see what you need more as I'm in the same boat and don't have much time but all these roms are great, vision x and of course darthstarker, all of them, i will go back to firekat in about 2 weeks because i can't keep just one rom for long, i have a problem, and I'm proud of it. Flashaholic, who needs an intervention. Enjoy the world of flashing, embrace it, love it.

Firekat for me
But Test them all see what works best for you

which two are themed? because i know dynamic kat has two options in themes, i love me some dialer themes

I'm still thinking I will go with CM 12 as soon as I get it running, having a few issues still. But I got Lollipop on my shield tablet and I think a good Android 5.0 AOSP ROM will be where I go. It's just TOO perfect to not use pure.

I agree with what others said- try them all, it will come down to personal preference. They are all pretty good (we are after all in the early stages)...
+Jovys Darth gives great battery life and reliability
+vision x- just solid. Great battery
+Dynamic - my personal favorite - nice out of the box features (dk control) and fast. Decent enough battery
+firekat - solid all around... Just not my flavor for some reason...
Then again none of them are making me go crazy like LiquidSmooth, Temasek or Effortless for Note 3...
Just my two cents.

I'm running Firekat on mine.It runs very well.
To be quite honest, I am it really interested in testing others. I need my phone to be reliable and ready for work every morning. That being said, I am sure the other available ROM are great, I just don't have time to play around.

For some reason I have chosen to stay with stock. But end up freezing a bunch of apps. I tried for very few days firekat and darthvador roms. And I couldn't figure out things like greenify and xposed. Wish I had more knowledge on those apps to fully understand and use better my note 4 with those apps.

Are there any AOSP roms out yet?

Soon my friend. Soon.

Used Dynamic Kat since it came out and just recently flashed VisionX. They are both really good and fast but I just wanna try everything I have nandroid both of them so I can switch back and forth.

Honestly all the roms are almost the same at this level, with dynamic being "most featured" base, and thats saying a lot. Just matter of finding a great dev, most battery, and which thread you enjoy the most lol.
If yall should check out xnote as well, run pretty sweet due to the firmware being newer
I enjoy all the devs thread as well as their roms

I love Touchwiz and Firekat Rom makes Touchwiz uber smooth + amazing battery life.
I wish stock people would try it before yelling Touchwiz sucks, Touchwiz lags.

Running Firekatv4 on the wife's note 4 very nice performance amazing battery life with same recommended edits as Dev settings..... Haven't had a chance to try any other because ...... Can't hog wife's phone forever you know how that goes lol

Thanks so much
You guys are awesome and thank you for all the input. Dynamic sounds like my cup of tea so far so I will start there.
Thanks again!

Consensus: Best ROM at the moment?

So, down and to the point... what's the best ROM out there? I'm looking for performance and battery life (I know they're usually negatively correlated) but the best balance of both.
Thanks in advance...
obviously, it all depends on what you're looking for, but my money's with Fresh.

try them pick the one u like and use it SIMPLE
I've played with all of them and the best for battery life, signal and over all just awesome is DamageControl 3.2.2.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700649
I really like AOSP, so Bugless Beast has been nice. I don't really dislike the HTC homescreen or lockscreen, but I don't like the contacts, text messaging app, music app, browser, etc.
However bugless beast has some rough spots, there is an fc that shows up once in a while (not a problem, just annoying) and it doesn't show up as a usb drive on the computer all the time.
Fresh is probably my second favorite, and it isn't far behind even though it is almost straight Sense. I see a lot of people say it is their favorite. It seems like it may be the most robust and stable custom ROM as well, but I haven't tried all of them, only half a dozen or so.
I like Bugless Pete's...
but moved on to Fresh because I like Sense. Plus I like the fact I can use apps2sd.
This is a matter of opinion. You need to decide for yourself. I am using Culkulins ROM and really like it. In b4 this is moved to general / q&a
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Only tried Fresh and Damage Control so far but I like DC better, I could tell an immediate difference in performance, unlike with Fresh. Both have Apps2sd which is a must for me. Apparently this phone has more app storage than most other Android phones, yet not even close to enough for me. I couldn't even put any graphic intensive games like Asphalt on before apps2sd due to lack of room.
Damage Control works great for me as far as 2.1 roms. Just look at the activity for that thread.... most popular IMO and for good reason with all of the dconfig options and updates. They were one of the first to incorporate the OTA update into their rom... they stay on top of things.
So Frech has the HTC Sense? I'd like that.
Also, will installing these different ROMs wipe my data? If so, what backup utility you recommend?
I like the fresh rom, but i'm using DC atm because of the OTA update built into it, i need the grounding fix but when fresh fixes it i'll be moving back.

I use titanium backup for the app data backup/restore and android commander for the app program backup/restore.
Damage Control also has Sense, though you have the option to disable it.
In case it hasn't been said enough yet - DamageControl all the way. Awesome ROM!
I dont mean to be a d**k but you have to read and experiment on your own. There's no such thing as the "best" rom. Clearly all the devs here put a lot of work into their roms and the least you can do is try it and see which you like the most. Are you even rooted?? Your questions give the impressions that you don't even know the basics of rooting or installing your own roms...read the stickies
and yes both Fresh and DC have the Sense UI
I use a modified Damage Control myself
Added in the latest busybox, Bash 4.1, made some tweaks to dalvik-cache to make it use the cache partition instead of the system partition (seriously, the cache partition is ~160megs and barely gets touched normally ), among other things.
It is worth noting that Damage Control (in my opinion) is quite good itself and stays pretty up to date, with a lot of nice features.
DamageControl my fav so far.

I understand, but I figured that by seeing what the recommendations are, I'd be able to exclude some unmentioned ROMs. Makes sense...
I am not rooted at the moment, but I am familiar with it (developed for my HTC Dash years ago). I haven't had much time at all to dive into rooting until nw. Unfortunately, the OTA update was run on this device so now I'm at the mercy of the devs around here to discover a workaround.
Damage rom for the battery life. Seriously guys , if anyone and I mean anyone is *****ing and moaning about battery life , then they haven't tried DC's rom yet. And if Damage ain't on then trevE will answer.
I find a close second in polish and likability is Fresh's rom. Great rom . And I've run that one too.
I also ran Finisher by magnus.
And the froyo by avalaunch. Which is great but I need my camara and I hate having to flash to get it and then flash back.
I've also flashed Hero's over rom. But i didn't like the guys attitude in a couple of posts so I took it off.

[NOOB "guidance" from FREQUENT FLASHERS]¤*Best ROM* ¤

Firstly, I want to say that I am doing this just to get everyone's own personal view on which EVO ROM is the best. Before I get all kinds of hateful posts just hear me out. I want to know what you think from your own personal point of view and why you think it's the best. For those who switch ROMs daily, post and tell some pros and cons of each maybe. Tell me why you like it, what you like about it, which of your needs it meets, which it doesn't. And so on!!! I think this could be a good thread for the noobs to learn different things about different kinds of ROMs and what the different ones have to offer. Thank you XDA community!!!!!
Edit: "Frequent flaher" I like that term and I'm sure it applies to a lot of people posting in this thread.
Destroyer is awesome. Very fast and awesome theming. VaelPak is also really good b/c it's so unique and customizable. IMHO, if you're new to flashing, you need to try, CM or variant of, Miui, VaelPak, and a Z ROM (MikZ or Warm Z).
For sense ROMs, Unleashed is really good. Very fast/smooth and awesome theme options. Best sense ROM IMHO. MikFroyo is also very fast. I can get good battery life out of almost any ROM, but EViO 2 stands out in that area.
ive flashed alot of sense and about all of the gingerbread roms. the gingerbreads are fast, but too high maintenance for me. sure some will say that its stable for them but 8 out of 10 in the cm threads are trying to work out bugs.
theres also a lot of fast and fully functional sense roms highly themed. depends on what the end user whants out of their rom, functionality, look, batt, etc..
i like a bare bones stock sleek looking optimized preferably lightly themed rom. thats why im currently running Miks 4.6b2 ODEXED themed by Chogardjr. i removed all of the useless stuff, its faast, rock solid stable, great battery life and everything works. IMHO!
I have used almost every setup there is, and most are pretty good, except they all have an issue or 2 that makes me feel incomplete when it comes to my phone.
Sense Roms: King's Ultra Froyo and Ultra Froyo 2, Koni's Elite 1 and Elite 2. ALL of those are pretty equal. Very fast, smooth, beautiful looking, but no matter what kernel I tried, battery life was garbage. One thing about my phone is I tried almost every NetArchy Kernel there is, I bet, and never got a good battery on a Sense ROM.
Miui: I can see why people like it, but I just don't like having all my apps on the desktop and switching to LPP takes away part of the allure of havng Miui. The theme changer wouldn't install any of the themes I downloaded. Plus, I had issues with screen flicker, but I understand I did the update wrong, so that may be where that came from. Also, I spent over an hour alphabetizing my apps... damn OCD!
CM7: By FAR the best battery life, with the kernel I use, SavagedZen 009, but the GPS navigation thing is an issue. I take my phone off the charger at 6AM, and by 11PM, after moderate to heavy use, I'm never below 50%. Still, I want those Sense Widgets. LPP has them, but in People, for instance, you don't get the user pics from Facebook, and all the entries are just the stock Android image. One other thing on CM7, that is intolerable, is that it takes a coon's age to copy anything to my SDCard. I did a back up, and reformat the other night and it took an hour and a half to copy my music back (just under a gig), for example
Right now, I'm running Destroyer, and the battery isn't as good as with nightly 14, but it's pretty good. BEtter than with any of the others I've tried. And whatever issues people have with this, I'm not having them. Everything is working good. Very fast, too.
For me, the best, most complete ROM there is, is VaelPak 3.2. It has everything you want. Almost like all the different Mods were combined to make one insane ROM. More custumization options than CM/Sense and MiUi put together, puls packs of goodies that come with the ROM installed on the SDCard. I can't remember why I took it off now, but I think it was the battery life, again, was horrible. Dropped 15% in less than 2 hours with the stock kernel. Although, I didn't keep it on long enough to really test other kernels with it, and there are a few that people using it say give them fanatastic battery life.
I love my CM7 nightlies. Nuff said!!!!!! <3

i like warm z.. but it dont have hdmi and 4G. ffc can be worked around.
what dont you give your thoughts???
Well I just started flashing ROMs about 9 months ago and started a basically sense roms. I didn't really like them bc of limited customization and they were a little slow and battery was horrible. From there I stuck with an AOSP rom for about the past 6 months until a few weeks ago and read up a little on MIUI and tried that out for a whole 6 hours and hated it. I couldn't stand all my apps on the screen and no drawer. Really got on my nerves. Then tried out that Unleashed and was happy with that for about a week til I really started doing some reading up on CM and decided to try it out, loved it and everything about it. So now I'm a supporter of them, but am super stoked to try out this new SZ ROM. Think that might be the new rom of choice for me.
Edit: That good Dan?

^^^ that will work...
Not sure why anyone hasn't said this yet but Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 5 is the best in my opinion. Might not have been updated in a while, but in my experience is the fastest Sense rom with lots of eye candy while still looking sleek/professional without going overboard, the best battery life (16 hours heavy use 30 with light use/good signal), and everything works. I know that AOSP roms have wimax now but gps has been hit and miss with every one of them (for gingerbread at least, I don't care for any 2.2 AOSP roms). Navigation definitely did not work.
I loved Evervolv and Savage but again, not everything works the way it should. Myn's is just the best daily driver. Battery life is phenomenal, I haven't been able to get more than 16-20 hours out of an aosp rom.
IMO (never h):
All the Sense ROMs are the same. They are just the same stock ROM with some heavy theming and maybe a custom tweak here and there ... but IMO if you're going to flash sense you're better off just checking the themes section and getting the look you want... because that's what they are.
Also keep in mind that Sense is likely a dead end as it is. I have doubts 2.3 will ever land on EVO .from HTC/Sprint... meaning it will never come to fruition in any Sense ROM. So it's a dead-end thing to support anyway.
AOSP is a different story. These are truly custom, already ahead of Sense if you're a version buff (2.3.3) and tend to run faster, smoother, and with A LOT less bloat. That said they aren't all flowers and rainbows either. Because they are actually scratch written they tend to not be feature complete (though team WIN is quickly changing that) so make sure you know what feature is missing and if that's a big deal to you.
That said, CM is the AOSP leader. It has the dev support, and most AOSP ROMs you'll notice are based on CM because they are nice enough to release under GPL rather than the default Apache agreement most others use. I like it for what it is, and it's the "best" if you like vanilla Android and want to follow what Google is doing with thier OS.
The other "best" IMO MIUI. It's behind CM in terms of the latest Android base (though GB is finally in the works), and it's closed source so it is missing things available in other AOSP ROMS ... but what it does bring to the table is amazing. It's better in battery, faster, the built in apps are worth paying for if they ever make it to market ... its an amazing ROM.
I secretly have wet dreams of MIUI and CM having an Android love child and bringing me my dream ROM ... until then I flip back and forth between the two.
I'm running a special rom called "dirk diggler rom" and if you want to use it deposit 500 bucks in my PayPal . P.S its better than any rom YOU will ever run on your evo lol.

The answer depends on your needs. For instance, I don't like the look of Sense but I also need 4G, GPS, Bluetooth and Camera working everyday. That limits me to a Sense based rom until CM7 stabilizes those things. For now, I'm getting by pretty well with Nonsense. It's not been updated recently and has minor flaws but the important things work for me everyday.
No one ROM does everything well. It's all about trade-offs. When you know your own needs, the filtering the choices should be a lot easier.

A backup of your files plus a flashing of a new ROM takes about 15 mins max. That's just to get a feel of the ROM and it's functions. So just flash them both, or even more and decide what YOU like.
If you want to test out the battery life, well that will take using the ROM for a few days. No one can truly tell you the difference in battery life because we all use our phones so differently.
I will say this tho: I've used both , and was a diehard TW ROM fan but then I used Trigger. I LOVE Trigger. But it's mostly because of the themeing and because of how involved the dev is in his own ROMs thread with answering questions and taking the users advice, requests, and opinions.
But again, it's really up to what YOU like. Don't listen to dumb quadrant scores and such and others battery opinions. Try them out and see. Both are great ROMS with their own pluses and minuses

No need to disable voodoo if you're flashing from the red recovery. It was an issue with the original voodoo kernels (JAC's) and the ulf ones, but not anymore (in my experience, at least). I was also a TW fan until I tried out Trigger a month or so ago. Haven't changed since.
OP, gonna have to agree with the others. It's your phone, your usage. Try each one out and stick with whichever one you like best. They're both great rom's though.

As long as your rom is currently running voodoo then just as the post above mine stated, no you do not have to disable voodoo.
Hold down power button, click recovery, and if it takes you to a red recovery then you can just flash away like normal.
BTW, Trigger just updated to 2.8.1 today with a nice memory tweak and a couple other small tweaks. GREAT ROM

I am totally new to modifying phones but I am quite computer literate. I like the Vibrant alot but obviously the original software does not perform too well. I have tried to download the Trigger 2.8.1 ROM via the link in the developers section but I get nothing more than a blank page staring at me. Am I doing something wrong? I would have posted there but since I am new I am not allowed
thanks

Want to root

I would Like to my nexus 4 with a rom that will boost my battery life, give me a bit more customization in my settings and, most important, is stable. Also if there is a particular rom/kernel combo that would work better thats cool too. I just got my N4 a couple days ago. I'm switching from a galaxy note 2 that had some hardware issues (long story). I like this phone other than I feel like its a baby switching from my giant phone. I appriciate any help.
Thanks

and id like a maserati gran turismo.
you have to try out all the different roms and kernels, find what fits best for you and your phone. there is no one magic rom. nor is there a rom that fits everyones needs. take some time, experiment a bit, the end result will be your perfect rom.

Rootbox + franco kernel. If not rootbox, pa. As it regards the kernel, franco kernel is the best.

not true, its the best for you. just as i can say trinity kernel is the best.
Like simms said, the best would be to try as many ROMs as you can, or until you find the one that suits you the best. It takes some time, but it's worth it when you actually find that One that suits you.

I honestly do not understand such a mentality.
It takes a long time and a lot of work to try out all these roms on the forums, it should be understandable that many people would rather just ask the community for opinions, surely you are right that each of us have different preferences, but we can contribute our own opinions so the OP would at least have somewhere to start.
Personally I`ve tried a lot of roms, and ended up sticking with rasbeanjelly because it`s the fastest and most stable for me, saberMod was also good but i prefer rasbeanjelly`s blue theme. I`ve spent some time with PA and other feature rich roms, but the initial attraction quickly fades and they do become boring and irritatingly slow compared to the cleaner, less bloated roms.
as of kernel I`m using Franco atm, my phone dislike the newer trinity releases but many older trinity versions were really good, but for me franco is the best right now.

And this is precisely why these types of questions are redundant. They're like asking 'what's the best colour' or 'what's the best type of food'. All you've done is given a bunch of opinions which are in no way provable and if I disagreed with every one of them then your post would be invalid. For example, your point that feature rich ROMs become slow after a while is simply wrong, I've been using PA for 2 months and it's been fast and stable for all of this time, and I have no reason to get bored with it. Also imagine that you were a dev. You've put in hours of work to produce a ROM for FREE and release it for people to enjoy. Is it fair that people would suddenly start saying that your work isn't good to new users, on a public forum for everyone to see? No.

Your ultimate rom

I have tested just about every rom available to my galaxy note n7000, and come to one conclusion: Carbon rom is a clear weiner for me.
The reasons to which I have concluded this? Well....
Bam is great, but I've found it slowing my device down.
Slim is fantastic, however it lacks quite a few of the pretty making tweaks I have come to covet.
Omni has even less tweaks.
PAC is fantastic too, but due to it having paranoid android, I don't have access to the extra settings I have with xposed app settings.
Paranoid lacks the pezaz a serious greeny such as myself wants. Made by men for men, in my deepest voice.
And all the modded stock roms are great too, but...... nav bar without tablet, I like using my stylus, and don't wish to whip a finger out to do simple tasks.
Yes yes I can hear all the digital intellectuals saying, 'What? Who? When? How?'
But considering even more noobs than ever are judging these masterfully baked Roms, an ignorant judgment has to be considered.
Why carbon? It's pretty, has all the tweaks, plus allows for xposed. Ahhh, I'm in love.

LOL "weiner".

Good for you... Have tried quite a bit myself (you forgot to mention the supernexus like ROMs) and always reverted back to touchwizz stock ROM. Lately a few days back I chose omni with KitKat and I think I might settle for some time on that one. Love its fluidity memory management must be great as now I can open several apps without feeling any lag. That may be placebo but I just think it is way over any other ROM nowadays.
