Save your Note 3 battery. - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Source: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3/862515-note-3-horrable-battery-life.html
1. Reboot daily, and do it when the phone is fully charged AND STILL ON THE CHARGER! Let it sit on the charger for a good five minutes so it goes through the whole boot process without taking any battery usage.
2. find the best (lowest) screen brightness you can live with and set that as your fixed screen brightness. Using Auto-brightness is NOT a good battery saver.
3. Active Apps Manager. I also put this right on the front screen. It's a little number inside a circle. The number is for how many apps are currently running in your phone's memory. The circle around the number turns colors from green to orange to red. If it's red then at least one of your running apps is using the cpu and therefore battery. If it's green then the apps are idle and not using much battery. You can press the button and it will show you what apps are open and what percentage of cpu is being used.
This little widget is invaluable in telling you which apps are notorious for using the cpu (and battery) even though you are not actively using them. It helps you understand which apps you need to kill off each time you use them. For instance I have found that almost all my news apps that have notifications activated will continued to run and eat battery. Also, my chess app, Chess.com. So now I just know to kill them off after I'm done using them.
4. Turn off wifi, bluetooth, gps, 4G, syncing and don't use any live wallpapers.
5. Enable Developer Options and check 'disable hardware overlays' and then 'enable MSAA' (automatically turned off on reboot)

Whats the point in having WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G if you're suggesting to turn it off?? Might want to think that part over again buddy lol

No it really doesnt....how can it possibly use power when its not doing anything? With 4G and wifi on....i could easily get 2 days usage out of my device.

Yeah ive been using the Advanced Task Killer for a while now already.
I have read that usage of ATK is not required at all because of Androids near perfect RAM Management. And you also could come into trouble because android looses a small amount of ram capacity every time you use ATK untill the next reboot.
other than that you could try Juice Plotter and Juice Defender
find a app can auto turn on/off fly mode.
I ve tried Juicy defender, it seems not fit wildfire very well, some function not working. like auto fly mode, and auto turn off wifi when over 50M.
(btw,it will change your apn setting, cause me can not connect after uninstall it.)
after 1 month, I found navigation app take me 80% of battery.like google map/navi.

Not sure if these steps actually improve the efficency of the battery OR wheter the S/W behind the battery guage becomes more accurate as it goes through a process that alows it to better estimate the SOC of the battery.

Yup, even I have read a lot that Android manages the apps in a beautiful way. When I first used Android, the first question that came to my mind was how to exit apps as none of the apps had an exit button. Coming from nokia, sony erricson etc this was an obvious question to ask. Then after some research I found that Android just freezes the apps when we go back. The app is not actually running in the back end.
But anyway, yesterday my battery again went to 8% and on checking the used status, it showed that the android system used 92% of the battery lol.
One more thing I would like to suggest is that there is a Power control widget built in the wildfire. Its pretty useful to decrease the brightness, turn off gps, wifi etc from the home screen itself.

Thanks for this!
I installed this widget and it said that GPS was on even though it wasn't appearing in the tool bar along the top. I had run several apps that use GPS, but had assumed if the GPS icon was gone, GPS was off.
Is that wrong?
(good news if it is, as I was struggling to keep enough power to in my phone to get through the day without charging)

Avoid task killers like the plague. They cause more problems than they solve. Trust the android os to manage ram.
Just discovered the most powerful app I have ever seen called "Tasker". It its only £4, but will make your android so much more diverse. You can, for example, have it go into airplane mode between certain times (i have between midnight and 6am) but periodically check for sms or voice mail every hour. It saves stacks of battery.
I have it turning wifi on only when it knows I'm at home or at work.
I have it turning off wifi, dropping screen brightness down, and playing a louder notification when battery gets to 15%.
It silences my phone when I get within 100m of the two cinemas I use.
It is not the most easy app to use, be patient with it. Look up some of the "recipes" on the internet to get a good tutorial on how to work it. £4 is a steal for something so potentially vast. Its limited only by your imagination.
Oh and having run Tasker for 24 hours, (how long my battery normally lasts) only contributes to a 2% drain, and its adding roughly 6 to 8 hours extra! It would cost you ten times that for an extended battery!
I use an free app called timeriffic to auto disable WiFi

Try program JuiceDefender....you can download free from Android market.
my battery life is really awful too,i noticed it a couple days ago, that it drains to fast,so i started looking into it,and i found out, that my device won't go too sleep. so in settings/about phone/battery the awake time and up time are the same. i had similar problems on my hero, but there it was the messaging apps fault.
here, i kill everything with advanced task killer,it still can't go too sleep, android battery use shows, that android system is using most of the battery.
anybody else with similar problem?solutions? i have stock 1.25 rom rooted with unrevoked.
What? You mean your screen is permanently on? .....
Ive head bad things about using task killers too, I dont use on anymore.
Some things i have done that have helped my battery like quit alot actually is turn off Wi-Fi, Turm off GPS, Turned off haptic feedback(vibration when pressing buttons), Screen brightness to automatic & screen timeout too 15 seconds.
I can now have a really good fiddle with the phone and it can last more than a day without needing a charge.
As I understand when screen goes auto shut off, all apps are idle, even WiFi or gps is on. I tried with music on continuously for 2 hrs in flight mode, I still have about 80% power. With gps on for 1 hr continuous, I still have about 80%. With normal use my power can last the whole day.

no,the screen turns off,but something still runs in the background what eats the battery, and I can't find out what it is. I tried multiple task managers, and they show that everything is closed.i have it in flight mode, with everything turned off, still something runs, what shouldn't.
Did you solve this? It's happening on my phone now, and it's very frustrating.
(just installed ATK - very scary the apps I never use are running) and killed everything except ATK. Touch the power switch to turn off the screen. 15 minutes later, up time and awake time are still the same.

2 updates from me, to help anyone else with similar problems:
1) I uninstalled any recently installed or updated apps** and widgets now I have a 1:6 ratio of awake time. So, fixed?
2) In the meantime I logged a call to HTC via their website. Answer:
With regards to your problem, if the battery is going down significantly and you have turned of applications when your not using them and used task killer. It might be better to call us up so we cann look into it further and we might have to book the phone in for repair especially if you have noticed it not charging properly or overheating at any time.

Evo juicedefender battery

is juicedefender good app? im interested in buying it to gain battery life or data on demand app is the same as juicedefender?
I've been doing some battery tests and by far this is my fav app to prolong battery life. Running with it I've seen a very noticible difference, paid for the app gladly.
I alos noticed a big diffrence with the paid version. when i used the free version i did not notice a huge change. It will mainly depend on how much your screen is off. if you have your screen off most of the time(like msot people do i assume) Then it can save tons of power (along with setCPU though the paid version of juice defender does have screen off CPU throttle built in)

Just ignore juicedender
Most people don't know this but Backed Snack 1.7 with Kernel #6 has 2-5x the battery life of most rom. That ROM does NOT use batttery period. Use go read the last couple of pages of that thread.
JuiceDefender slowed my device to an absolute crawl. COMPLETELY slowed it down so badly I had to restart to get it back to working. The UI is VERY confusing. YMMV, but I don't think it's owrth it.
I tried the free version. However, when I found out you need to have the notification icon running all the time, I uninstalled it. I don't want a cup of orange juice on my status bar 24/7.

Right, I mispoke, it doesn't need to be on, but it does highly recommend for it to be on so it doesn't close. Anyone else have the notification off and running Juicedefender fine?
the juice works
I got to say it really works!
just set it to turn off Data when screen is off.
Caused to many other problems so I uninstalled it. It does save battery life mainly from disconnecting your data whenever the screen is off but alot of programs I use need data when the screen is off and most importantly I use wifi tether alot and it does not work with the screen off. I tried many times even with JD showing wifi tether allowed to keep data connection it still randomly disconnects. Was not worth the hassle I have 2 batteries and would rather just swap the battery than have to use JD.
Why not use the data power widget. One click on and off. I click it off and put phone on standby. If I turn on I wont click unless I use a app or browser that uses the internet. Everything that syncs I can just click into and with sync.

was great until the most recent update to it, made my phone crawl, took me 3 restarts and 10 minutes just to get into anything to shut it down and uninstall it.
i also have the notification off and it works fine for me.
for wifi tether there is an app option that i just selected wifi tether and told it to always leave data on when wifi tether was running. (you can do this with any apps if you ahve some you like to use with the screen off ie pandora etc so when you are using them it doesnt turn it off but when yuo are it does)
Also i have never had issues with it slowing down my phone. I have used it for months with out problems. even on baked snacks roms it helped for the person mentioning it.
maybe i have jsut been lucky but for me has done wonders and worked great once i got everything set up correctly

1 - battery drain in standby shouldn't be significant but you can reduce it by turning off radios you don't need and/or reducing the update interval of any apps you have checking in the background.
2 - I'm not sure what's happening here, usually the wifi logo overwrites the 3g one so it is obvious which one is in use (at least it does on my UK SGT, might be different for CDMA). Either way switching on and off the various radios is easily done from the notification area, just swipe down from the top of the screen to show toggles for wifi, bt, gps, silent mode & orientation lock.
Edit: oops, I miss remembered, I don't know of an easy way to switch the mobile radio.
3 - I had a bit of a play with allshare day one but haven't had time to give it a proper workout yet.
4 - I haven't had mine run down that far but it sounds like a sensible power saving measure, better to see it dim for a while than bright for two minutes!
5 - the screen auto adjust in the display settings seems to help a lot. Other than that I've found the battery life to be very good for the most part. I tend to only switch on wifi if I have a big download to do so that might help in my case.
Welcome by the way, hope you enjoy the tab!

THANKS Bill! Appreciate the info/advice!
I guess I am getting confused between the 3g/ the strength bars. So if it doesnt say 3g but just shows signal strength then its probably using wifi?
Does anyone know if the SGT defaults to wifi first then to 3g? Just curious.

When wifi is on it turns 3g off. I use an app called tasker to save my battery. I have it set to turn wifi/3g off when the screen turns off, and if I place it face down it sets the device into airplane mode, left in this state the battery drains very slow when not in use. Tasker is not the cheapest app but you are only limited by your imagination what you can do with it.

Not quite correct! It allows you to stream from/to other DLNA devices which includes some Samsung TV's, but plenty of other devices too.
For example, I use to it to stream from/to my PCs with Media Center.

How much screen on time do you get?

How much Screen On Time do you guys get on the Nexus 4? I just want for comparison, cause I want to check if my phone is alright. Preferably Stock 4.3 (latest version as of 13/10/13), because that's what I'm using.
I get up to 3 hours on 2 Day period and a little over 3 hours on 1 Day period.
For me it's quite enough, if I have a busy day, and I don't use phone that much, but if I am on a journey it's too less.
Also an extra question, does the free space left pop up is Android built in feature or it's some kind of app? I want to turn it off, because it annoys me, when apps update it keeps disturbing me, pauses apps, gets in front of screen, really annoying when you have 10 apps that need to update. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3kAm0MqKUNzcEVSYTdYSjdJcnc/edit?usp=sharing
Please, anybody?

Anyone know how to get rid of the notification? I have enabled auto optimize, but every day I get the notification that my phone can auto optimize apps. Kinda annoying.

Yeah wish it was that simple. Samsung made sure to remove that possibility from this app.
You know what, the more I use samsung phones, the more annoyed I get with them, cause they pull stupid **** like this. A few updates ago it was the weather app nagging with notifications, and when they fixed that, they just introduce another silly app to do the same stuff.
I'm done.
The "Always Power Saving" mode comes out to be the life saver to my phone
I saw a drastic change in it's battery life! Actually it works like a task-killer and since it's integrated with the system, we don't need to root our devices and install Greenify at all Thanks Samsung for understanding the needs of average consumers!

I saw a drastic change in it's battery life! Actually it works like a task-killer and since it's integrated with the system, we don't need to root our devices and install Greenify at all Thanks Samsung for understanding the needs of average consumers!
See the drastic change here:

Is this on COI9?
Do you have anything else disabled?

FYI, one of my friend was constantly calling me at that time and making me difficult to take the screenshots so I had to turn it on for a couple of seconds

I was asking because on my edge, on COI9 it doesn't say "always battery saving" but rather "always optimize" and I don't get standby times that great. I thought that since there is a new firmware available Samsung changed something in the algorithm, hence the name change and techsammy was on the new one, hence the much better standby times (and maybe has something disabled that does wonders)
Ι have huge battery drain since yesterday with COI9....
Ιts getting better after a few days.
My battery drine in five cicle charge .coi9
Any solution
