I thought my N4 had horrible blacks until I realized that Android was using dark grays instead of blacks throughout the menu system. It makes the screen really hazy.
Not a fan.
Is there any way to correct this short of using a custom launcher?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Use a app that changes the colors. Of course this won't fix it either, it's just the way IPS screen is, AMOLED screens produce the best blacks.
Alternatively, you can download a inverted ROM that has a black background instead of dark gray / bluish.
I think the ROM you're looking for is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028025

To the Community:
I just yesterday picked this puppy up at BB and, quite honestly, am very disappointed in the display, specifically the hue. All the yellows are washed out -- WTF???!!
Resolution is awesome but the white background when browsing looks like I'm looking at it under old-style fluorescent lighting -- YUCK!
I've played with all the Settings > Display > Screen mode modes and there's barely a change when going from one to another.
Is this correctible? Is it a TouchWiz thing? Will a different ROM help?
(FWIW -- I'm upgrading from a Xoom running Eos ROMs and other than the resolution, it was gorgeous. The Xoom was a great device: heavy, granted, but the bezel width really did set the standard that tablet manufacturers seem to be migrating towards.)
PLEASE TELL ME THERE'S A SOLUTION!!! THE COLOR RENDITION IS SO UNPALATABLE I VERY WELL MIGHT RETURN IT AFTER LUSTING AFTER IT FOR MONTHS!
Thanks.
Sounds like a hardware problem. I don't see how Touchwiz (or any ROM) could be responsible for that. Better have it exchanged.
Sounds like you're using reading mode

Color accuracy is pretty decent on the Note 10.1’s display. As always I’m reporting color data using Samsung’s Movie mode, which remains the most accurate setting of those offered. Grayscale performance is excellent, but our GMB and saturations tests put the Note 10.1 on par with the original Nexus 7. It’s definitely a better calibrated display than any other Samsung Galaxy Note tablet we’ve reviewed. Not quite on par with the new Nexus 7, but getting very close.

My (AMOLED) N3 displaying the same yellow background as my N10.1-14...
My "whites"...
The screen on this amazing and nothing short of that.
You must have a bad tablet...
My screen is great.
I have minor light bleed on bottom edge but thats not bothersome and barely noticeable.
Never had any problems with color rendition. Not to the extent you said it sounds like. Its been pretty natural looking for me.
EDIT: Removed link, its posted two above this...
I dont know what these numbers mean but here is a comparison against a crapple ipad: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10.1-2014-vs-Apple-iPad-4_id3445
Don't get me wrong, I like the screen a lot. But it is not perfect. I think the pentile design shows when certain colors are next to each other (producing less than perfect transition from one color to another).

Was it exactly the same when you first turned it on or did it get the yellow cast after some use?

No, there's no yellow cast: rather, the yellow's are washed out and not at all vibrant. White backgrounds have a blue-ish gray-ish tone and the only analogy I can muster is that it's like the color temperature is "cool," as opposed to "warm." Canary yellows come out looking dull gold; skin tones are very off-putting and for a top-dollar device, it's really not pleasant.
Side-by-side with my GN2, the colors are much truer on my GN2, hands down.
@BarryH_GEG -- thanks for the useful post; I am using movie mode.
@bootx1 -- thank you, too, but I'm not using reading mode.
Here are some screenshots from today's XDA main page.
1st photo is from Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 ed., second is Galaxy Note 2; third is a side-by-side with the Galaxy Note 2 on the left (the dude's skin is a little reddish on the left but it's not bad -- the skin tone on the right is actually much worse).
WTF????
Thanks.

I leave both my N3 and N10.1-14 on Adapt Display. On the N3 it's the only way to achieve maximum brightness in bright conditions; like an additional 150 nits. I'm not sure if the N10.1-14's Adapt Display works the same way. I have to confess, while Movie Mode may be more accurate I've come to like overly saturated colors on my mobile devices.

To me......... In your (photo 3) side by side photo's I think the device on the left is to red and has to much color saturation the tablet looks good to me in that photo....
There is at lease 2 places in the control panel of the P-600 to adjust color, have you seen them?
If you not happy with the way it looks and you can exchange it you should. If you don't you will always have this thought in the back of your mind.
.
as another user said, it sounds like reading mode is turned on make sure it's off. It probably unlikely that this is the problem though since the the only app that defaults with reading mode on is play books.
Thank you for your responses.
I'm not quite sure how to say this without sounding impolite but several of you seem not to have read my posts completely, so please allow me to start over.
My yellows are very washed out: what ought to be bright canary yellows are dull gold. For example: the yellow in the Chrome logo is what I define as "yellow." On the GM10.1, 2014 Ed. it appears gold and dull.
Skin tones are wan and blue-ish.
White web page areas are gray-blue-ish.
Overall color temperature is "cool."
Reading mode does warm things up a bit...but still, I can't get any combination of settings where yellows "pop".
Settings > Device > Display > Screen mode is set to "movie" and that barely affects the vibrancy of the yellows; in fact there is no real difference between all four of the options.
IN SUM: COLOR RENDITION SUCKS.
Take it back to Best Buy?
(I s'pose I just answered my question...)
Thanks in advance.
The subpixel arrangement creates a dot effect more seen in print when looking through a magnifying glass. While not overly distracting, I do notice it at times. My biggest complaint is the blueish hue shift in darker tones when putting the display at an angle. Is this a TN panel ? I've always had OLED and my Oppo Find 5 was the first smartphone I've owned that didn't have a OLED screen. Still, the find 5 screen was MUCH better than the note 10.1 2014. Especially the black levels are kinda disappointing. I think the screen is WAY overrated in reviews. I primarily use the note in darker indoor areas so I have no use for the extra brightness delivered by the white subpixel.
I still think it's a great device tough, and for the price there is nothing like it. I would like to see some CM and Omni builds for it though which retain the wacom S pen "drivers". I don't care for the samsung features, I just want to use Autodesk Sketchbook.
Overall, I'm really happy with my display. My one complaint is that viewing angles seem to be a little off.

What I know is that this device comes with LCD display. Not amoled. So there.is not pentile design. Because it is not amoled. The color would not look as vivid as amoled, yellow will look like a bit washout because of the backlight compared to amoled

As you can see, Note 10.1 2014 edition is pentile. You can also see this when looking at the screen. Transitions between some colors are a bit blurry.
When talking about display performance there's the objective and subjective. GSMArena, AnandTech, and NoteBookCheck DE all run an extensive battery of standardized tests on all the devices they review. All praise the N10.1-14's display; especially compared to previous Samsung LCD displays.

Sorry folks, you can't argue with the objective.
As for the subjective, assuming those not digging the display don't have a h/w issue, to each their own. The N5's display objectively produces very accurate colors. Those I've seen look washed out and dull. OP's not happy with the coolness of his display. I personally detest warm displays. You can't argue the subjective because it's both personal and opinion.

I LOVE this phone! everything about it is awesome. I'm very happy to finally have a nexus device. (came from s5) This phone is really fast, android 5.0 is awesome, build quality is great. I only wish the camera was a little better. Indoor shots are hit or miss, but that probably will be fixed in time with software... not a deal breaker at all.
I love everything about it except the size and weight. Ugh. It might be going back
I love everything about it except the not having it yet part..
G3
Also going to be coming from S5. Waiting on delivery. Were you able to sell your S5 for a good price? I'm hoping to sell mine to get back half the cost of the N6.
I love everything about it except the AMOLED screen, wish it was IPS.
IPS makes more sense as Lollipop is more "white" and moving away from the Holo / black backgrounds.

I'm with you. I've had amoled displays since the droid incredible. Several Samsung's later I finally tasted good LCD with the N5. We also have several iDevices in the family. The purist in me would rather have had an LG based IPS LCD in the N6. However, the amoled suffices and I really like the warm calibration on it

They could not have done the ambient display notifications without it being amoled that's probably the major reason

So how is the display? How is the gamma, saturation and brightness?
Coming from G3 and I love this too. Also a previous N5 user. Display is superior to G3 so is build quality. Software is far superior as well. Top notch device.

The display is pretty good, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed with it. I'm coming from a G3, and in all truthfulness I feel the G3 has the better screen. If you hold them side by side the G3 looks sharper, the colors are more true, and the whites are whiter. The N6 whites do look pretty dingy next to it. I'm pretty sure I'll get used to it tho, and the build quality us way better. The one thing I absolutely loved about the G3, however, were the buttons on the back. Really wish this phone had those as well.

It's totally adequate and better than average, but not amazing. Compared to my Note 3 it's not as bright and the whites aren't as white. The Note 4 screen is even better than the Note 3, so take that for what you will.
I'm also not a huge fan of the color temperature. It's a little warm for my taste. I'm sure I'll eventually be able to change this once kernels start rolling out so I'm not too concerned.
The phone is great though overall. I just wish it had a 6" version of the Note 4 screen

I would agree - it is definitely warmer than the S5 and iPhone 6+. That being said warm isn't necessarily a bad thing as it may be more accurate for color representation. I will have to test the nits later.
After comparing my Galaxy S6 AMOLED display to an iPhone 6 and an LG G4, the whites on AMOLED just look horrible with AMOLED. Samsung has made tremendous improvements to Super AMOLED technology in a few short years, since the S2/S3 era. Whites look brighter and more accurate, but they still can't touch LCD.
It would be nice to see Samsung go with a cutting-edge quantum dots LCD, we could have brighter whites and still save energy consumption. Due to the inefficiency with the technology to display whites, I doubt we'll ever see them look as LCDs with their back lights.
AMOLED screens don't achieve the best on-screen times either due to most content on the Internet having very high APL. Most of the Internet and UI interface has bright colors and white backgrounds too. Until Samsung can put more development breakthroughs with AMOLED or develop the more brighter and energy efficient QLEDs, I would love to see a high quality LCD with all the same profile calibrations Samsung offers for their OLED screens.

No never. I will not ever buy LCD again, even after the moto x 2014 it became clear to me that amoled is superior. Maybe the whites are still not as good but the blacks are better (and in truth the s6 has the best color reproduction of any display) BUT amoled is functionally so much superior to LCD I would even be willing to give uo some display accurary for the added benefits of amoled (ambient/active display, no power consumption for pure blacks)
No LCD

X2 for no way. Amoled has those awesome blacks and better contrast. But also, amoled can save battery by using black, dark themes etc since the pixels aren't on when displaying black. That's such a great advantage. Whites look perfectly fine to me too. I see no issue there.

Unless you're going to run your display in negative mode most of the time, most of the content you display isn't going to be black. That's not the design ethos most websites and UIs use. Besides, bad blacks are only noticeable in the dark. Poor whites are noticeable in all types of environments. The color reproduction might be good on Samsung's Super AMOLED displays [not other AMOLED displays] but everything else about them is seemingly underdeveloped. Contrast viewing angles has never been a major selling point for me or a particularly useful additive, high-quality IPS LCDs have proven to be good enough.
LCDs are just better at the moment. Samsung's Super AMOLED technology [again, forget the inferior AMOLED panels used by other manufacturers] is a few years away still from surpassing top-end LCDs. They have the potential though. Just don't see it happening this year. While LG's G4 isn't that great of an LCD, it's a good example of how blacks can be made acceptable on LCDs with quantum dots technology.

Lol, that's funny. How about black wallpaper, lock screen, black theme, black browser theme, I use Voxer all day for work in a dark theme. So yeah, there's tons of places to utilize that. Not to mention amoled uses less power already as is and the newest amoled is super color accurate. There's basically no advantages to LCD anymore. You're crazy, but if that's what you want, buy one. Just don't expect support for it here, where everyone would much rather have amoled. You're not converting anybody (what seems like you're trying to do).

All I heard from you was "blah blah blah, I like AMOLED so I don't care blah blah blah" - not exactly a good argument. Not everyone wants to use a dull and boring dark themes that consist of black. People have different ideas of creativity and most people like to use wallpapers and backgrounds that have regular colors that have bright backgrounds. AMOLEDs do NOT use less power unless content is not above 65% APL. Most web pages and UIs out of the box have 70-80% APL with all the whites and other colors that AMOLEDs aren't efficient with [such as blues] - If Samsung pours in a couple more billion in R&D, Super AMOLED technology might be prime to surpass the current advancements in LCDs. For now, I think and would prefer if they put in a class-leading LCD panel in the S7 and Note 6 for 2016 with display calibration profiles, at least until they iron out their OLED limitations and inefficiencies.

And nobody is making anyone theme anything it's just an advantage one could do with Amoled that they cannot with lcd. Also that's an opinion, most people like dark themes better as is.

LCD will never have the functionality of AMOLED, that's even when AMOLED is their color reproduction and brightness are slightly inferior to LCD (which btw is not even true) they lack the possibility for ambient display
I'd vote for LCD on the S6. X100
The display on the S6 is pretty poor to be honest. Colour reproduction is no where near real life on any setting and anyone who thinks it is reads reviews are gospel because in real life it's a different story, with white's are awful and blacks which are only slightly better than the current top level LCD's.
Add to the fact, removing all the nonsense about Amoled being better on battery, which in real world usage is rubbished, most work done on 99% of phones is white background, negating any battery advantage, which is negligible and indistinguishable in real world use and testing.
Black themes on HTC One M9 look just as good as on the S6, possibly even better thanks to the other colours being better, and anything with a light or white background looks leaps and bounds better on it's LCD.
Can't get around the fact that 99% of Samsung's current displays have pink tint and uniformity issues and look pretty poor.
Mine was replaced and the pink tint which looked better, is worse than ever after just a few days or so of use.

Have you even looked at real world pictures or looked through the camera of the S6 lately? No mode is true to life with colours and the my M9, or in fact probably any top end LCD lately is better in direct sunlight. The S6 display looks like a ghost while the M9 actually is still crisp and sharp. As for ambient display, who uses it and how long is it on screen for ? .5 of a second? Useless.
Among the reasons for having bought Samsung phones for years the screen is one of the main reasons, if they changed to LCD I would most likely change brands. Samsung lead the world in AMOLED display so why change that to become like Apple. All I can say to those posing this ridiculous suggestion is change your phone to a manufacturer that gives you what you desire. I still get comments from my friends that have Iphones (the 6 included) that Samsung displays l;ook better so maybe its not that bad at all even if it isn't representative of "real" life its just easy on the eye. My opinion of course

Useless.

I used to use ambient display all the time, too bad samsung disabled it (for now). And you must be using your display wrong, the S6 has the brightest display by a long margin, almost twice as bright as some of the competition but you have to leave the brightness to auto
No, thanks.
lol, no way, the screen is the main reason I still use Samsung devices...not that the other hardware is bad but OLED is the way to go.
The AMOLED display is one of the main reasons I stick with Samsung.
AMOLED fan here also. Not 100% certain which technology is more efficient/better based on technical specs but for daily usage, I much prefer my S6 SAMOLED over the G3's LCD.
I've watched a V20, G5, Note 7, S7 Edge display comparison video and in that video the author claimed that V20 has very cold color temperature (whites are more like blueish) and the color correction is not so good (colors are displayed somewhat incorrectly?). My question is, as a user have you seen anything like these claims?
From those videos and using the v10 and G4. Yes. But it's something you kind of have to look for it. If you are getting the v20. Just enjoy it.

And don't forget, every "review" you've seen so far has been with pre-production units that use software that hasn't been finalized.
i have an LG V20 color correction i cant tell other than it looks better than my note 3. whites is a close to white maybe a slightly cold but now where near to blueish. has an option if you want it more warm so it wont strain your eyes, you can tell its more warm when you enable it. so far i like it.

It is on the Blue side for sure when comparing it directly to my Note5. In a direct side by side comparison it is really Blue but as long as you don't have it side by side, you get used to it very quickly. I actually like it better when not using the (Comfort View) Blue light filter.
its not as vibrant as a amoled, its more of a cool CLEAN representation.
whites are better than an amoled screen, but amoled (especially samsung), the blacks are superior
personal taste.
the whole replaceable battery, non exploding....makes up for it though
Adding another owners reply from another question thread for anyone interested:

It's on the colder side. Also the extreme contrast on the Samsung AMOLED would make theirs a more eye popping display. With that said, if you use only look at LG's phones for a day or two, you'll get used to it and it's actually a very good display. I like Samsung's display personally, especially the latest iteration of them where the colours are more accurate, but I can live with LG's IPS no issues.

How do you know.... The note 7 didn't report exploding for a few days after official release. I highly doubt there will be an issue but Samsung wasn't the only phone this year.
