Any way to get "true" blacks in 4.2? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought my N4 had horrible blacks until I realized that Android was using dark grays instead of blacks throughout the menu system. It makes the screen really hazy.
Not a fan.
Is there any way to correct this short of using a custom launcher?

Use a app that changes the colors. Of course this won't fix it either, it's just the way IPS screen is, AMOLED screens produce the best blacks.
Alternatively, you can download a inverted ROM that has a black background instead of dark gray / bluish.
I think the ROM you're looking for is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028025

Screen contrast weird thing going on.

Hi
I just noticed something weird going on, the more black I have in the screen the brighter the whites get. Asif the more oleds are turned on its draining more power and making the other oleds loose overall power.

CONTRAST.

To expand, the more black there is around the white, the more white the black seems in comparison, that is contrast.
And as the AMOLED pixel is its own light source the contract is already very high, as a black pixel is an off pixel not giving out any light.

Hence why having a black background saves power and also lessens the chance of screen burn on amoled displays.

For me it is the "Auto adjust screen power" on display settings menu.

Yeah exactly the notification menu dragging makes it really obvious.

Yeah, definitely that. This function is on by default and limits the maximum power drain of the screen, so if there's a lot of white (or bright colors) on screen it will limit the overall brightness in order to save power.
I think it's very irritating and disabled this feature about 1 hour after buying the phone and never turned it back on.
Thanks guys. Auto screen power definitely the culprit. The screen is allot more uniform and "normal" now. Nicer to use.

IPS screen is warm

It seems like my screen is is warmer than ideal. See attached screenshot with an LED backlit laptop screen at 100% brightness, a Nexus S at 50%, an iPhone 4 at 50%, and the N7 at 50%.
Anyone elses warm like this?
Does anyone think this can be correctable/adjustable via kernel tweaks?

I remember my nook color was able to create all kinds of funky screen colors/temps. So yeah
I noticed that the colors are a little off on the nexus 7. Supercurio released an app before for the Tab 10.1 to calibrate display and hopefully we will have one soon for the nexus 7

I tried an app called "screen adjuster" and it helped a little bit but the problem is it uses quite a bit of CPU when it's turned on, animations become noticeably sluggish so it's only really good for testing. Anandtech did some tests on the display and found that greens are a bit undersaturated which kind of makes sense. This is why yellows in particular don't quite look right and makes the colors overall look washed out, the tint is a bit warm as well. With CM7 on my phone there are a few preset settings to choose from for display calibration that were made for particular phones like the Nexus One, it would be great if someone could fix this, either with an app or via root, or a custom rom.
Also, if you are going to try the app, I suggest you set the blue to about 6% and you'll see the tint is much less warm afterward, but it won't fix the saturation.
Actually, I think the other devices you have are particularly cool. The IPS screen like my Nook and Nexus have is much higher contrast, and doesn't exhibit the somewhat blue look I've noticed on many TFT LCD screens which use LED back lights. For example, my Droid 4 has a VERY cool shaded screen because it isn't just RGB, but rather RGBW and the cool-toned light of the LEDs shows very clearly.
I much prefer the warmer color temp of the Nexus 7 to the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0's coolness. The N7's whites are white at much lower screen brightnesses, rather than the frosty blues of the Tab 2.

Color washed out?

Just got a Nexus 7. Screen looks nice and crisp, blacks look real black. But the colors are way different from my Evo 3d. From the moment I turned on my Nexus the colors seemed a little dull. Very noticeable when I bring up the same app on both devices.
My theory off the bat was that it's because they use different types of screens. I'm not too up on the difference in screen technologies, so I don't know if this is the case or not.
Just wanted to see what you guys say, if it's a defect with my device or the Nexus 7 screen just isn't as good as I was expecting.
The blue notification bar on my Evo 3d is a bright blue, it's more of a lighter baby blue on the Nexus 7, just thought that was a color change in Jelly Bean, but not as sure now.

I just got mine and its noticibly duller than my GS3.

I think AMOLED screens (as in your GS3) tend to produce more exaggerated and bright colours than LED screens (as in your Nexus).

Well in that case maybe I'm spoiled!

Screen marks only noticeable on low brightness dark screen

I have a relatively new (1w) sgs3 and have notice that in the dark room when screen has a darkish grey too off-black background solid colour (even on the stock notification background) and with tge brightness on lowest setting, then there many blob marks in the screen.
I ran a pixel checker which is fine but this appears like a defect in the glass itself. I'm not using a screen protector yet.
Can anyone else notice these blobs, some of which are as big as 3-4mm diameters?

Its completely normal on Super Amoled screens. I have them but it doesn't bother me since it only occurs on black screens. FYI, there was already a lot of topics about this already...

Haven't seen it on the SIII, but on the SII I have, this would happen with screen filter on lower brightness. I think that it has something to do with the level at which the pixels fire optimally. If they are under fed, essentially, the inherent flaws in the screen matrix (as in any manufactured item) become visible where they otherwise wouldn't.
I know this has been beaten to death, but it varies from phone to phone. My i9300 had a lot of blobs. My second one only really has one noticeable one. My i747 is almost perfect. It has little dots, but they are spread out and pretty much near the border of the screen. I wish it would have been the other way around...
please search before posting this topic has been discussed in great detail in another thread.
common on super amoled hd panels.
Same issue too. Checked with Samsung and they said it's common for the screen. Only occurs in black pictures low back light and dark room and it doesn't bother me

Really poor color reproduction

Does anyone have really bad color reproduction, looking at an all white page looks visibly redish blue and looks nothing like actual white. Coming from a sg3 and hearing about how much better a 1080p led screen should be at color reproduction this is pretty disappointing.
Try it, turn up to max brightness and open browser or Gmail and compare it to a piece of white paper, it's not even close.
Edit: really strange but a reboot seemed to fix the color issues. Looks much better now.
