I believe you can use what they describe here under 'Method 1', essentially use an OTG cable to plug it in, then turn the controller on. I don't think you can unplug the controller from the USB cable though, you have to leave it in. http://www.pockethype.net/pair-ps3-controller-android-devices/
Personally I use a Wii U Pro controller with a wireless USB adapter, you might have luck with this PS3 to usb adapter using the 'xinput' setting from the same company: http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Controller-Adapter-Mayflash-Personal-Computer/dp/B00DSFW5MA
I have not used this adapter for PS3 controllers but the one they make for the Wii U Pro controller works perfectly.

Sixaxis, after latest update, perfectly working with my Dualshock3.
But as you know the app uses root access to change some bluetooth mode/characteristics the Remote won't be working until Sixaxis is disabled or Nexus Player is restarted.

Ah.. so you have to disable sixaxis every time after you have used the gamepad. That sucks. Is that just how it is or can it be fixed you think, to have them working simultaneously?

I believe the dualshock controllers use some non standard or proprietary Bluetooth protocols. So to work with them the sixaxis controller app needs to change the nexus player Bluetooth to that non standard mode. So I am afraid that they will ever work simultaneously.

I think this is true of DS3 but not DS4. I am able to pair my DS4 w/ my Surface Pro 2 (Win 8), Laptop (Win 7), my Nexus 5 (on CM 11s), my friends OPO (CM 11s again) and my Droid Turbo (unrooted KK) w/ nothing special required.

Yes, the sixaxis application is only needed for controllers < ds4(ps4).

As stated before you will need to root your NP and install the Sixaxis app to pair your DS4 with it. The point I was making earlier is that while the DS3 does have a proprietary BT protocol the DS4 seems to use a different protocol that works out of the box with Windows and Cyanogenmod but doesnt work with vanilla Android. Until someone comes out with a custom rom or kernel that builds in support for it, you will have to use the Sixaxis app to use PS controllers.
Well for some reason my ds4 is now connecting to my NP natively but input lag is horrendous. When I try to go back to sixaxis it tells me max clients connected. Now i can't use my ds4.will try to restore the np and try again.

Alright so I took my NP to factory specs, relocked and hen started from scratch again unlocking and updating and rooting. Now my DS4 is connecting properly through sixaxis. If you want to use a DS4 do not try to sync it straight with bluetooth yet it will cause problems, until it is supported properly through kernels or updates to bluetooth it will have some nasty input lag and be unusable.
Tried on day one, no go in my part unfortunately.
got sixaxis working but now my nexus player remote is unpared and I cant find a way to repair it even after putting it in pairing mode and searching for bluetooth devices.. any ideas?

I had to factory reset but someone said that you can just restart bluetooth with adb. I am not sure what it is, try searching the threads.

No need to DO factory reset !
Use a usb mouse or keyboard ( connected to otg adapter to nexus player ) and goto sixaxis application and click on stop , this will enable blue-tooth service for your original nexus controller.

ummm, thanks but I was responding on how to fix it without reseting it.
If I had an OTG cable at the time I would have used it before reseting it, which I didn't and that is why I was responding how to fix it without an OTG cable

simple power cycle will enable the nexus remote if you Just disable the sixaxis auto start on boot with currently paired DS3 , In sixaxis preferences> general settings > auto start.
I think the the nexus player ON BOOT will start pairing process , if no remote is paired.

you could use the pair button on the underside ( this pairing will not work if six-axis driver is running)

Start the BT pairing from the phone (will find the nexus player in search BT devices )
this pairing will also keep the phone in unlocked state ( Trusted device feature ).

Simultaneously connect to a bluetooth headset?
I got to pair my N7 and PS3 controller thru Sixaxis just fine. But it prevents me to simultaneously connect to a bluetooth headset. So I have to disconnect my bluetooth headset and connect my PS3 controller. Does anyone know which bluetooth headset would work simultaneously with the PS3 controller?
I can not get mine to pair. Keeps saying there is no controller found on the n7. I installed both version as stated on the website.
I changed the address from the n7 and put that on the program. Not really sure what is wrong
Got it working, just had to unplug the ps3 controller then start it up.

I know the nexus player has usb, so the controller can be plugged in, however im not sure if it will work wirelessly or even at all for that matter. I am planning on buying a nexus player, and want to see if i can skip out on buying a controller for it.

The PS3 controller can be used on most any other rooted android device if you use the Sixaxis Controller app from the Play store. This does require root, however, so we'll have to wait for root before verifying that the PS3 controller will indeed work on the NP. I am near certain it will since it works great on the Nexus 7 and 10.

I doubt there'd be a leanback interface for the app before root comes, but it'd most likely work as is.
The Sixaxis Controller app for Android doesn't seem to work with Android 5.0 anymore.
I tried it with my Nexus 7 (2012) running rooted stock 5.0, using SuperSU 2.23, and it errors out.
Looks like it's gonna have to be updated for Lollipop, so it might be a no-go for the Nexus Player for a while.
The sixaxis controller app just got updated to support lollipop, so I'm gonna try it tonight and I'll report back.

It works!!! Was getting some settings crashes and the app took a bit to pair but seems to be working ok now.

I wasn't able to get my Nexus Player to pair my controller, but I ended up just using my Nexus 7 to pair it. It's a pain to get it to work, but it seems to be working great on mine too.

Oh. I just used my Nexus 7 to pair the controller with the Nexus Player. I didn't pair the Nexus 7 with the Nexus Player. I actually tried to do that, but I couldn't get the Nexus player to recognize the Nexus 7.
Grabbed a dualshock 4 ps4 controller today during BF sale. Paired with Nexus Player like a champ, haven't had time to check the touchpad functionality though but I am enjoying this controller for my gaming. I am going to try to pair both the DS3 and DS4 and see how they work together

To clarify, does the DS4 pair with the NP out of the box, or does it require root and an app? As dumb as this question sounds, my understanding is that the DS4 pairs with Bluetooth enabled PCs much more easily than the DS3 did, so I'm wondering if Android treats it any differently.

Truth be told I didn't even try it straight to the NP I used sixaxis right away. It works great. The new sixaxis app sometimes finds my DS3 as a fake controller other times it works fine but the DS4 always pops in fine. the touchpad is tweaky at best so i tend not to use it but this will be extremely handy once it is fixed properly.
Just tried it straight Bluetooth. The NP sees it as a Bluetooth controller but fails at pairing it. Tried multiple times but the NP just hangs. I really wish the Bluetooth stack in Android would finally support these devices (DS4, wiimotes, etc) properly...

I'm not sure that's a failing of Android. It's Nintendo/Sony using proprietary software with their hardware. Windows won't recognize them 100% without 3rd party software as well, as far as I remember.

The android bluetooth stack has gone through a few changes over the last couple of version which have wreaked havoc on third party accessories.

While this is correct, it doesn't change the fact that Nintendo and Sony use proprietary software with their hardware, thus negating whatever bluetooth stack is being used.
That said, prior to Android 4.3, the Bluetooth stack used on your Android device was up to the OEM, and it differed from device to device. With Android 4.3, Google told OEMs which BT stack to use. This is to help with compatibility and consistency.
I read in another thread that you cannot have both sixaxis (for PS3 / PS4 controller etc) and the remote working at the same time. Wonder if anything can be done about that?

The wii remote doesn't use "proprietary software" that negates the bluetooth stack. it connects to pc bluetooth stacks fine. in fact android can detect the wii remote it just won't pair with it. cyanogen had actually included support for wii remotes in CM11 as long as your kernel supports wiimotes (most kernels just a downported driver).

I am able to pair my DS4 with with my Droid Turbo running 4.4.4 w/ no 3rd party software. Although it could be possible that Motorola modified the BT stack to allow this? It also paired w/ my old OPO and N5 both running CM11s. It would not pair w/ the N5 running vanilla KK. It doesn't seem like it's too hard to include whatever it is to make the DS4 compatible with android but for some reason Google doesn't include it out of the box. My DS4 also pairs w/ my MS Surface 2 Pro on Windows 8.1 with no special drivers or software.

I've side-loaded the Sixaxis controller app onto my nexus player and can't get it to connect. It did once, but crashed instantly and deleted my NP remote from the 'remote & accessories' menu lol. Causing me to resort to a factory reset to get it back.
I can pair the controller with the N7, no problem, NP just doesn't want to work. Any guidance would be appreciated
I think you may have been able to use a phone/tablet with the android tv remote app to re-add the stock remote. Not sure but worth a try over a FR.

Open the Sixaxis app on the nexus player and start it, and it'll show the Mac address of the nexus player. If you open it on your nexus 7 and connect the controller with a USB OTG cable, and click pair inside the sixaxis app, it'll prompt you to enter the Mac address, and it'll have the nexus 7's Mac address by default. Change it to the Mac address displayed on the nexus player. Once that's done, disconnect it and click the PS button. It should connect to the nexus player instead. I got it to work well, but I had the same issue and my nexus player remote stopped working, so I haven't looked into it any further.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but I searched all over and couldn't find anything.
I'm having a problem keeping my WIFI connection when using the SixAxis app. It only stays connected for a minute or so and then goes back to LTE. And it won't connect back to WIFI until I disconnect from the app and turn on airplane mode or reboot.
Also, I'm able to connect and use my Dualshock 3 controller, but it doesn't connect to Bluetooth.
I'm running Resurrection Remix v5.2.9(LP 5.0.2) on my D800, if that helps any.

Are you saying that it's working with cable but don't work with Bluetooth? Did you used the SixaxisPairTool to pair your controller with your phone?
And I also have too that problem with WIFI, maybe it's a bug on Android L.

It's connected wirelessly via Bluetooth, but it shows that Bluetooth isn't on when connected.
Yeah, it doesn't show that Bluetooth it's opened, but the app works well. I use a Dualshock 3 with ppsspp emulator and it's work great except those 2 bugs, I didn't even noticed that bug with Bluetooth until you said . As I told, maybe those bugs are only on Android L and they will be fixed

Yeah, the WIFI thing is annoying because you can't play N.O.V.A.'s multiplayer on data.
I'm sure it's Lollipop or maybe even the ROM.

Then whats the purpose of sixaxis app if you can directly pair them? Maybe they can't be directly paired and the only solution is Sixaxis app.

I think the PS4 pad is the most balanced gamepad for thew type of gaming I do(mostly emu/retro gaming and occasional Android native games)and before I order one Id really like to hear from anyone who uses different types of gamepads

The PS4 controller can connect wirelessly to any android device using the closed source paid app Sixaxis Controller available on Google Play. This works quite well. If you adjust the settings and default mapping it can work just like a native Android gamepad and start the service on boot. Having tried it on my 16 GB model there are two caviats. Firstly it overrides the Bluetooth hardware to simulate a PS4, so you can't simultaneously connect any normal Bluetooth devices (such as the Shield remote). Luckily the Shield gamepad uses WiFi-direct. Secondly, for some reason the D-pad is unavailable during the gameplay of some games. This is no good for playing Half-Life 2. Also the non-default mapping doesn't play well with GTA San Andreas. Despite these issues I'm still glad I bought the Dualshock 4 (I don't have a PS4) because it's the nicest physical gamepad I've used, and the two issues I've listed are only software problems. My LG G3 running CM 12.1 nightlies can connect to the Dualshock 4 without the app but doesn't map well. Another cool thing about the Sixaxis Controller is that you can use the touchpad as a mousepad. Great for sideloaded apps. Oh and you need root to use Sixaxis Controller.
Got it. I was aware of sixaxxis for other android tablets/phones Ive used but for some reason I thought I had seen a youtube video of someone simply pairing a PS4 gamepad using the native Bluetooth pairing process. I may have been looking at a video of another device, not the ShieldTV
My Sony TV with built in Android TV has drivers for a PS4 Controllers to used via bluetooth, is there anyway I can extract the files to be used with the Shield TV?

I rooted in order to use the Sixaxis Controller app. I never managed to pair it to the Shield TV via normal bluetooth (like I can with my phone). And the master address needs to be changed either way.

yeah I rooted my shield TV last night and using the Sixaxis appto run my Dualshock4 controller. Worked like a charm.
does the siaxais controller ps4 work with the nvidia shield for multiplayer?
The Sixaxis Controller app claims to be able to handle multiple PlayStation controllers but I haven't tested this. I can confirm that it works multiplayer using a DS4 and Shield Controller (which uses WiFi direct, so isn't affected by Sixaxis Controller overriding the Bluetooth hardware). Interestingly the DS4 now pairs with the Shield TV (via Bluetooth, without Sixaxis or root) and maps correctly as of firmware v2.1. Unfortunately it misses button presses and it's impossible to turn off the DS4 without unplugging the Shield or unpairing it (and it took about 20 attempts to pair). Sixaxis still works well but require root and disconnects all other Bluetooth devices. I'm fairly sure that you can pair DS4 controllers with Sony Android TVs out of the box.
will it work via a cable connected usb without a need for an app?
i want a second controller not sure which one to get
anyone using this with bluetooth be aware: if you leave the sixaxis app running for too long with dualshock bluetooth enabled, it may eventually disable bluetooth on your device when trying to go back.
ive been through 2 different nexus players, as well as a shield tv and all have ended up disabling OS bluetooth, even when turning off the sixaxis bluetooth, resulting in requring either a factory reset or android terminal installed and typing in some commands to get it to work again. What causes the issue seems to be random, as sometimes i can leave the app running and come back and it still works, other times it doesnt though. you can still use the nvidia controller since it runs via wifi, but the remote and any other bluetooth devices wont work. this issue is a random event and doesnt always occur, but it IS there, and its a pain to get it working again.
Perhaps someone can find a compatible app to sideload to enable/disable bluetooth in case this happens? would be much easier than typing in terminal commands.

Yeah, I experienced the same issues in just my first time pairing a DS4 controller with the Sixaxis app... Also, like others mentioned on here, the default layout is a bit weird (Options=Select; Share=Back, etc) which means a lot of customizing in games, etc. Also, the service doesn't always auto-start that well so sometimes it takes some time to get it 'connected and ready to go' and I don't like how the app takes over Bluetooth while it's running. The only thing I did like is that the touchpad feature does work well (as long as the app supports 'Mouse input'), but overall I didn't think it's worth the hassle if I have to this every time I want to use the controller.
BTW, in case your Bluetooth becomes disabled while using this app, the command that worked for me (in adb shell) is:

Has anyone successfully paired the shield with a DS4 without the sixaxis app? My shield can see the controller (listed as wireless controller) but they can't seem to pair.

Same thing happened to me although I only had the app for about 2 hours before it disabled BT. I couldn't get it to work while installed, and i am rooted. I don't believe it works in the newest firmware 3.0.
What did you use to write those commands? Would adb minimalist work? Same app used to root the shield?

Well, I used the Nvidia Shield TV Utility App to get into an adb shell, but Minimal should work just as well. Just make sure to run the 'adb shell' command before you run the commands I listed on my post above..
I used terminal Emulator on the device and it worked great. Turned BT back on

Alright I finally found a way to use the dualshock 4 controller with my shield tablet k1 running Android 6.0.
The problem I faced was that when I wanted to pair the controller and tablet it became stuck on the "pairing with..." part.
And since the sixaxis controller app doesn't work on marshmallow I started trying somethings and searched for a solution online.
So maybe there are people that are facing this issue aswell This is how I got it working.
1. First download and install the Sixaxis Pair Tool from the dev's website :

2. Connect the DS4 controller with a USB cable to the pc and start the Sixaxis Pair Tool you just installed.
3. In the box "Change Master" you want to type the Bluetooth MAC address of your tablet, you can look this up when you go to Settings > About tablet > Status > Bluetooth address
* if you don't see a mac address make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
4. After you filled in the Tablets MAC in the "Change Master" box you hit apply and double check if the new "Current Master" MAC address is the same as the MAC address from the tablet.
Now that the DS4 knows for what MAC address to look for you want to install the following application on the tablet aswell.
* Look for the following app : Bluetooth Auto Connect
The reason we need this app is that for some reason the controllers input starts to lagg after about 30sec after pairing it with the tablet, the only solution I found was using this application.
5. So now that we have the bluetooth application installed aswell we can open the app.
*If the app asks you to turn on Bluetooth just hit OK.
6. Now scroll down to the bottom and tap on "Advanced Options" in here you want to change the following settings:
Rety Count = 1
Rety After(Sec) = 1
Device Timeout(Sec) = 5
Continuous Connect = 2
7. When you changed these settings you can turn on the DS4 controller by pressing on the PS button.
8. Now press on the "Connect Now" button at the bottom of the Advanced Options page.
After 2-3 seconds you will be asked if it is oke to pair the controller with the tablet, select yes and tadaaaaa you have a working DS4 controller on the Nvidia Shield Tablet
So for everything works for me, even the button mapper that can be accessed by holding the Options button on the DS4.
I hope this helps a couple of people !
*If you want to use the DS4 with the PS4 again you need to plug it in the PS4 with the usb cable to pair it again.

EDIT: It works great, able to play donkey kong 64 again hah.

When doing this, if I have a MacBook as my pc but a shield tab, when going to dl the sixaxis pair tool from the dev website do I dl the one for Mac OS X or the one for Windows? Also if you go to the page there's two links for the Windows now which of those two did you use?

Hi !
If you use a MacBook that means you need to download the Mac OS X version they provide, I don't have a Mac so I have no idea how that works. I did a quick google and found this orikad.com/sixpair_instructions.html I suggest you follow that and it should work.

I'm afraid this won't work for the xbox controllers since they don't use bluetooth, however you can get a 360 controller working if you connect a usb adapter for windows with a usb otg cable.
There is at the moment no way to use a Xbox One controller with any device other can Windows 7,8(.1) and 10 since the wireless adapter only supports these versions of windows.

If you root the tablet you can use this app play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller and connect the DS4 to your tablet with a usb otg cable so you can pair it on your tablet, this is done with 1 press so you don't have to look up the MAC adress etc. However, the app is having problems with newer versions of android 5.1.1+ so I decided to skip the rooting for now and go with this method

Yup ! A wired 360 controllers should work without any hassle with a otg cable

I tried to get the DS3 working without root but I haven't found a way yet So no it doesn't work... sadly
Btw it stucks in pairing to , also in stock 5.1.1 on k1!!
