[Q] Nexus 4 security - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I didn´t find anything about my issue so i´m posting, i have a nexus 4 rooted with PA rom.
Now any rooted phone can be powered down and if stolen that person can try the keys combination to enter into recovery mode, from there its easy to have a brand new phone.
So my question is how to prevent this?
Regards
Rui

There really is no way, at least to my knowledge, to keep people from factory resetting your phone after stealing it. Even if you managed to find a way to get a custom recovery to have a password, which currently doesn't exist, people can still boot your phone into the bootloader and factory reset your phone, even when the phone is encrypted.
Basically, if you choose to root your device, there is no way to secure it so people can't factory reset it to get a "brand new phone".

Is there any way to secure android like ios7. In case if i loose my phone then no one can use it. Is it true a hard reset will remove my pattern or password? My phone is non rooted. Can someone install custom recovery too?

There is not fool poof way to prevent this. Even on IOS7 the security can be gotten around. Best advice is to make sure you are backing up your files.
Google does have a remote wipe option built into the Android OS. That is your best bet.
There is no full proof way to make render unusable, but you can call up your carrier and ask them to blacklist the IMEI so they can't use sim cards with it anymore.
You could however, protect your data. Do this by: encrypt your device, stock recovery, disable USB debugging, lock the bootloader. At least with this, if the device is stolen, if they don't know how to flash factory image, they'll need to enter the encrypted password to boot into the phone and can't copy over your datas.
You should also look up the app Cerberus, which with root can survive through factory reset (as long as they don't overwrite or format the "system" partition).

Help needed, bootloop. spyware?

Hi guys I have a problem, I am using miui7 developer ROM and my phone has been compromised twice, I have had my bank account hacked(long story but calls where diverted and bank log in details changed) and 4 days ago someone tried to log on to my banking app remotely 5 times and so it was locked down, bank has confirmed it was my phone and my WiFi provider that was used and I know it wasn't me, so I have tried to flash 2 ROMs using all the correct methods and it always results in the same, a boot loop, I am wondering if partitions have been messed with, or if there is something hidden on the file system causing this, what I would like to do is wipe everything, I don't mean just system data cache etc I have tried all that unsuccessfully, I mean fully wipe and reset all the partitions memory emc chip and totally start fresh, can anyone help please, I really need to sort it out I know my phone is compromised because of things that have happened. Any solutions please. Anyone experienced malware in miui7 ROMs? Your help is really appreciated.

Redmi note 4g single sim doir, bootloader not sure never unlocked so presume locked, rooted and unrooted tried both methods, flashed plenty of ROMs in the past without trouble.
Sorry but i cant really help since i do not own the device. It would probably be best to try to find a solution on miui forum, directly ask a member of a Dior device team. And don't know if you flashed through recovery or fastboot mode - try both mehtods, also developer/stable rom. I think flashing through fastboot also acts as a full factory reset. There must be a tutorial for unbricking or resolving bootloops. Also try some custom cm/aosp based roms to see if the phone will boot. And since miui is chinese, you can presume that there is some data leaking, but i don't think that it contains malware - it would be too much even for xiaomi (unless you "picked up" some shady script/trojan/whatever along the way).

Factory reset on a passcode locked Chinese Pro 5?

Long story short, a customer of mine brought in this phone, forgot the password. Who cares. The issue is when putting into recovery to reset the phone, it asks for a password. The major issue is that there is no way to get passed it easily because it is a Chinese one (version a.) Saving the info is not a problem, the issue is erasing the password!
I know how to root phones and install recoveries on other phones (meaning I can follow a few guides if needed.) I also know how to delete the password as long as I can install TWRP onto the phone. Again the major issue is the stupid Chinese version.
Anyone know how solve my issue? Flashing updates don't do anything other than update the firmware.

Hello!
Do you know if your customer used Flyme account while using the phone?

So look,
I rooted my phone succesfully.
Now I want to encrypt my device using the device encryption feature. Ok.
I enter a password and it shows me an Android guy doing his job. Then I dont see anything anymore on my screen... I press volume down plus home plus power and I see this famous error: Encryption failed blabla, I need to reset my phone in order using it.
So, I dont want use the originally firmware, I need a rooted phone... I also need an encrypted phone, so my question is how can I solve it? I downloaded a legal root file and no corrupted.
Please help me, everytime I try to encrypt it I need reset it again.
Help
Bump, I need the help, this is a real issue for me, thanks.

Dont want to spam but someone must have a solution for this issue...
Help
Again asking for help its a serious issue
your failure could be due to root, which causes a permissive kernel. I may be wrong with the terminology as i dont encrypt at all, nevertheless, this question is not really specific to the device, hence why nobody can actually add anything.
Try a more general forum.
Factory reset your device then encrypt. It should work then.
Once encryption is confirmed then you can root.

Sprint GS7 - No WIFI and "CUSTOM" after last OTA update. KNOX 0x0.

Ok, so this is my wife's phone. After the last OTA update to QE1, she noticed that the WIFI would not turn on. I kinda ignored her for a couple of weeks until she really made a fuss of it. When I finally got around to it I also noticed that "CUSTOM" was present in the phone information area as well as upon bootup. I've searched XDA as well as other sites and tried everything I could think of but nothing has helped. I cannot mess with any WIFI settings because it will not turn on at all so I can't even access the menu. Neither Sprint nor Samsung will touch the phone because they claim I rooted it. I didn't. I have factory reset it numerous times with no luck. I have ODIN'd the software for a full reset and used all older software versions even. Following Sprint's own software updates, no luck. I have used the Samsung SmartSwitch program on the computer to also do a full reset to factory multiple times with no luck. The Samsung rep at the local Best Buy even tried it. The only thing that a full reset helps with is getting rid of the "CUSTOM" notification until you reboot the phone. It doesn't fix WIFI.
Has anyone had experience with this problem? I am getting ready to root it, but I'm not sure if that will even help. Additionally, the phone currently does not have Sprint service, I had to activate her old phone... So, I don't have access to the internet with the phone unless I reactivate it on an account... I looked at a root option, but it requires wifi...
I'm open to suggestions. Please help..
Ok, so no one has any input on how to fix my problem. Is it not possible with the locked bootloader?

After running odin with stock firmware, go into recovery and hard reset the device again . As far as Hard Bricking on Purpose, that would be fraud, something not allowed to be discussed here. Mods please lock this thread.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry about breaking the forum rules, I went ahead and edited my original posting. I've already tried odin with stock firmware and hard resetting the device numerous times with no luck... I'd like to be able to dig deeper into the phone but I'm guessing that won't be possible with the locked boot loader?
