Hey guys,
I know it sounds kinda weird but I just want to ask if you are expecting the same "inconvenience" as me.
Are you having problems with fluffs inside your audio jack? Therefore I can't plug in my earphones. I'm just curious because it never happened to be a problem with the phones I got before. Might be my jeans as well[emoji1]
yeah, it's normal like fluffs in your navel.
Try clean a pocket sometimes.
That happened to me about a year ago. I kept my phone upside-down in my pocket and it collected in the headphone jack. I just started carrying it right side up and that fixed it. I liked carrying it upside-down though.
Don't worry about it just use a tooth pick to get the fluff out and it will fixed it no problem
One of my headphones just stopped working and I thought maybe lint was in the Jack again, Nope, my headphones just died. I blame this thread.
Just use the hoover to suck it out
First thing I did was buy some dust covers for the Jack plug and the charger port

Usually I catch it before plugging my headphones in,
if it's too far in, I just suck it out with my mouth.

Well, unfortunately, my headphone jack has worn out. Even the slightest jiggle cuts out the left, right, or both channels. I popped off the rear cover of the phone, and the solder joints on the mainboard are intact, so I assume it's just that the contacts have worn down. They didn't seem to be very receptive to any bending further out. (On a side note, it was amazing how much dust and grime was in this supposedly sealed device, and I swear, my phone runs on an average 5° cooler)
Does anyone know a decent way to fix/replace this? I don't see a motherboard on ebay, and while I'm handy with a soldering iron, I have no idea of where to aqcuire a replacement jack. Bluetooth headphones are an option I understand, but that is less than ideal considering my Schfancy noise cancelling earbuds.
Any help, or a nudge in the right direction would be great.
Thanks,
Sidney
same problem here. One year old phone, only 4 mounth of everyday headphones use and when I touch the 3.5mm jack, my left channel cuts.
I dont know how to fix this, but I can see some corrosion on connections. Its not shinny at all.
Ditto. My phone just started doing this a couple of days ago as well. I too have only had the phone a year and the left side started cutting out quite a bit. I'm glad to hear it's just the phone though. I thought my headphones were going bad and that was going to piss me off even more because I rock some pretty spendy cans.

Op, you have ideas why this phone can get really hot? Especially in Australia the weather can be quite unexpected at time and can get really hot. I just don't like how my pocket heats up due to my phone. I haven't even owned this for a year and it gets quite hot

Got gps running while in your pocket? Gps has always heated the crap out of my phone. Also make sure if you are overclocked that you don't have it on something to high.
If you see corrosion in the jack try to clean and see if works(op) if not sounds like you are gonna need to switch to blutooth

If cleaning it out doesn't help, you could always crack it open and resolder the connector I've seen some of my engineering buddies successfully fixing their 3.5mm connectors on other devices.
Like the title says, before I always tried to fully insert the headphones into the female jack that came with my play.
But today when I only plugged semi into it like the attached pic they work great!?
Kinda wondering why this is and if this could potentially harm the phone or headphones.

do the headphones have a mic? What kind of skullcandys are they?
Sent from my Dark forest ICS beta
Yeah they are green/black 50/50 ones. I realize the mic won't work at all like this, but I like being able to use these as original I bought them for my ipod touch a couple weeks before I got my xplay.
I used Super glue to glue the Mic button down and now when you connect it to my phone (No need to put it in half way or anything) it works perfectly, if you don't want to risk it hold the button down while connecting and play some music to be sure, or you could always just use some tape...
Wasn't sure if that would work.
But yeah lol I did it with tape I might take the tape off and use glue later.

So I have been using nexus 7 for past 11 months... At first the headphone jack was working fine, I was getting good sound from both the ear buds but then it stopped working nd i never really cared about it because I use headphones with my nexus 7 less. But now that I got myself a JBL J04 I wanted to watch movies with these beasts on.... So i did some digging on net.
PROBLEM: The headphone jack is not working fine, it was giving sound in only one side of headphone(left one in my case) but when plugging a speaker jack it seemed to work fine. I have used both creative speakers and mini speakers. I have used mine skullcandy earphones and also jbl headphones but sound was only coming from one side... And in jbl headphones it was coming very very low.
SOLUTION: When you open up the back cover and see the loudspeakers module... There is somewhat copper conductive part revealed under those two loud speakers, and they gets in contact with the metal of back cover, when back cover is closed. So we need to TAPE THIS REVEALED COPPER side and voila mine headphones got working like a charm. For a good reference image is attached. This worked in my case so I dnt know maybe it will work for others or not. And yeah in my case I used black electrical tape.

Ur welcome bro
I know this is a bit late but after sending my tablet out for two RMA s for this problem I thought it was fixed. It's been off warranty since the end of July and yesterday the jack started screening up again with the left ear bud not working intermittently. If you tapped it it would come on and off. So I opened it up and tried this fix and it worked great. So much for Asus customer care I just needed electrical tape.
Thank you very much.

If speakers work fine, the problem might be in the headphone jack contacts, as was in my case. One of the contacts was broken and I could hear sound only from the right earphone. So I just put something between the jack and the back cover and now everything works great!

My problem is that it will not switch to the headphones when headphones are plugged in. It stays on speakers. Before I start digging around do any of you believe it is a hardware issue? I reset the tablet completely twice - didn't work.
Thank you

I didn't have any copper exposed, but it worked. Thank you.
This post saved me a bunch of time and trial and error. I was not getting sound from my left headphone and found a small piece of plastic from packaging solved the problem. I just folded it to make it springy and tight when compressed and it just stuck to the input jack (I provided images). So when I snap the battery cover back on it pushes the headphone jack back into place. Free 5 minute fix.

The first time I placed the tape as shown in the picture and I wasn't careful and covered up the loudspeakers.
I used electrical tape the next time, as you suggested, and I placed the tape on the back cover rather than the copper conductive part. It works like a charm - thank you very much!

hello. i have the same problem like nate51 described in his post. when i open the nexus and push on the earphonejack i hear music on both sides with the headphones. but i have to push so hard that the solution with putting a placeholder like plastic or paper between the back and the earphone jack doesnt work. what possibilities do i have to relay repair it and to solve the problem in its source? i didnt see any broken solder-connections in the near of the earphonejack.
thanks for help
I want to make sure my unit is not defective. When I plug headphones into the jack, they do not seem snug. They are kind of easy to pull out. They sound fine, but there is a lot of static sometimes. Has anyone noticed that the headphone jack on the S5 seems more loose than previous models? Thanks
got my s5 yesterday and my headphone jack is very sturdy I cant wiggle it even a little with stock headphones plugged in , have to use quite a buit of force to unplug it to , rogers here G900W
I know this is obvious but have you tried a different set of headphones? Mine sit in loosely until the last 2-3mm and then need very positive pressure to push in the last 2mm. Once in they are very tight and do not move at all, they do not come out loosely either. If yours do it on more than one set of headphone I would say it's faulty

Sounds like you aren't plugging your headphones in all the way. There's a definite click when they're in all the way, the static you hear is because the headphones plug is moving around.
Hope this helps.
Like the other guy said make sure you plug it in all the way. The click at the end is the clue.

I was pushing it down all the way. I took my phone to Samsung and they tried other S5's and it was fine. Mine was defective. Mine was extremely loose. I'm glad I acted now, instead of waiting when it might be too late.
Yeah gotta go for that final clic

Loose fitting-replacement alternative?
Hey guys, I'm hoping someone here can help me with this problem. A few months back I tried to clean the headphone Jack on my s5 with a q-tip and one part of the inside gold piece bent outward, so I had to pry it back in with a paper clip so I'd be able to fit headphones in without the arm (or whatever piece it is) obstructing. Now, unless coincidental, my shure se215 headphones are fitting so loose that I can shake the phone hard enough to make the headphones fall out. And yes, I'm firmly pressing on to make sure it's all the way in and I've tried with a few different headphones. I really don't want to replace the headphone Jack and was hoping there was some way to maybe change the case and try to permanently fix a headphone extension onto the case to eliminate this problem. Any ideas or suggestions?!
from your description, it's a fair bet that one of the connectors is bent out of shape. The earphone socket is a sealed unit and therefore unrepairable. The only option is to replace the entire assembly.
As for your idea to permanently fix the earphones to the device.....not really practical unless it's your intention to turn a working phone into a media player....
Too much functionality is lost by having the earphones plugged in all the time.....
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
I had this problem since I got my S5 over a year ago, I've even sent it off for repair and they found nothing wrong (a load of rubbish) I compare to my friends S5 which is a later batch and his is snug and no static. I believe the issue is the contacts inside are not tight so they are only lightly touching the headphone jack. I managed to completely fix the static issue however by getting a cotton bud and thinning the cotton tip down a little so it fits inside the slot, then dip or spray the tip with Isopropyl alcohol, jam it in the hole as far as it goes and twist it around hard ( you might need to bend the cotton bud in order to twist it as it will be tight. I do this once every few months and it completely prevents the static issue from happening.
I can't stress highly enough that this is not a suitable repair method.
Speaking as someone who is more than familiar with electronics and components and circuitry, it is my informed opinion that this method has the potential to further damage the socket......The fact that so far in your case, this damage hasn't occurred is simply down to luck.
In that socket, there are 4 precision sprung contacts that do not react well to violent cleaning methods. 'Jamming' a cotton wool bud in the socket as far as it will go and twisting it around will (at some point) bend these contacts totally out of shape which will make the socket totally useless.....
Please don't do it, you WILL end up having to replace the socket.....

Nah....lol.....
You're one of the majority of unaffected owners though......
It's just a shame that Samsung (along with every other OEM) seems to be unable to get rid of these faults entirely....

Check the audio jack for dirt. I use a needle to get the lint out, bunch of it comes out every few weeks. It was happening on all phones, if there is too much of lint, headphones won't stay fully inserted.
